Ubuntu 10.04 is an LTS and hence it will be supported with bug fixes for 3 years. So even those who have very old hardware have a choice of running it for next three years. They will miss new features but that is not necessarily bad. You have a valid point... No OS, open source or otherwise, can make 100% users happy. Because no matter what, they always find something to complain about. Open source is about freedom to choose. And that freedom is also valid for distribution makers. They have the right to decide what is best in long run from maintenance point of view. For example. Sparc port of Ubuntu, which is community maintained, will be decommissioned during Maverick cycle. I meant, making current ubuntu users happy M$ made similar attempt in Vista and they failed, but that was much bigger change than what ubuntu has made. So I kind of having mixed reactions to Ubuntu these days... As you have already said Vista was much bigger change. Vista was not even capable of running on the systems in existence when it was release. Also the so called 'Vista Capable' systems also were not well equipped for Vista's intensive memory/processor usage. Looking at recent buzz around Ubuntu, I am try phase out to some other OS... Whatever update was done in version 2 is going to stay in 3 and 4 as well. Also updates do not usually affect the other packages depending on the one being updated. If it does indeed affect other packages, then such packages are updated as well. Thanks for the many replies on Ubuntu 10.04 , they were mostly lucid ;-) Seems like its been a good ride so far, no major issues, which is really good. Am guessing as soon as i can get hold of a copy. Which brings me to the second question (below) My 9.10 occupies about 12 Gig of space (and lots is available) /dev/sda7 22G 12G 8.3G 59% / I know from experience from 9.10 that is overloaded with multiple programmes for everything. (since i installed the Ultimate Version) the good thing was everything worked out of the box (specially media codecs). The disadvantage obviously too many things meaning a lot more updates. Am not convinced that the default Ubuntu available for download is a good option - it requires too much tweaking and setting up to many things - esp if one has to do it in more that 1 machine. ( i will end up upgrading Ubuntu on 6 machines all in different physical locations none of who have any decent internet) So the requirement is clear - find a distro that is basically packed full of stuff and then do the needful systematically on the individual machines. I have a suggestion, instead of installing Ubuntu Ultimate, just install a live Ubuntu and do all the tweaking, installing stuff, and so on... Once you are done, install an app called remastersys and create a remaster CD, which basically creates your system clone, there are some more options too... If you install on other systems, there you go... a Ultimate Ubutnu without unnecessary packages Jobs included in the individual machines are 1. Localizing fonts (copy fonts to a /home/foouser/.fonts directory 2. Setting up local language keyboard and multiple language options 3. Setting up 2 or 3 different internet access methods (making sure they work - like the Network Manager in 9.10 works for some and does not for others) some of which need a wvdial.conf script 4. Setting up Google earth / skype ?? 6. Setting up offline dictionaries (and artha) 7. Installing programmes that Ubuntu has dropped (gimp, gthumb, scribus etc) and many others that never ever come by default (marble, nut-nutrition, and some more that i cannot remember right now 8. Setting up virtual box 9. There are a whole lot of system tweaks - setting up autoback up in openoffice (for example) eyc You can create a python script to do all the following, I think you can spend less time to code than install... If you find hard to program you can ask some one in community for help, may be I could accept too... :P I guess you get the picture , so each machine takes a fair bit of time and since this is voluntary work (i enjoy seeing the latest and the bestest running and then see people get happy to have a new version to enjoy) but it is still a pain in the your know where, jst sitting around waiting for each machine to. Am thinking this time i will just do a system upgrade and then check for broken packages and then redo those. So am waiting to get my hands on the latest full 7-8 DVD repos. (see question below) and since its LTS i guess it will be stable for some time. Second Question are there folks selling 10.04 DVD's and the repository If so who has them and related to this - is it worth waiting a month before installing 10.04 - seems like there is always stuff that works better after a month of corrections Depends, if you are a normal user, just proceed... Whatever goes through the SRU[1] queue till the time you install it, will be provided as an update via the update-manager along with any security fixes that come through. The reason it is marked new install, it is infact a new install (not trying to be funny), after you install there will be 2 kernel versions showing at boot time (so it is not a update/upgrade, but a new install). Using synaptic package mgr, you can uninstall the older version of kernel. Few reason I can think of 1) Upgrading to a new kernel can break your system sometimes, so if it is a new install, you can test it and stay with new kernel or move back to old one... 2) some people stick a particular kernel because of their configurations like OpenVZ (amature explaination, as I am one...) No other beginner friendly ones that I am aware of. But you can look at it this way, once you've spent the effort in setting it up the first time you don't really have to do much to keep it running. You should also be aware that you will usually have bleeding edge software and compatibility might break from time to time (this is anecdotal of course, YMMV). So what kind of net connection is required for Arch - from what i can gather a pretty reliable and fat pipe seems to be the order of the day. was realy curious what rolling release meant - so checked the wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolling_release A rolling release is typically implemented using small and frequent updates. However, simply having updates does not automatically mean that a piece of software is using a rolling release cycle; to qualify as a rolling release, the philosophy of developers must be to work with one code branch, as opposed to discrete versions. Updates are typically delivered to users using a package manager and a software repository accessed through the internet. seems to me that this is something that requires constant access to the net and also not really meant for systems that require stability. The latter because there is no way such solling release can account for individual systems setup and cutomized (or can it) The advantage i see is that instead of lump sum one gets small updates (maybe) and it means that after the initial install , maybe, one can survive on a small bandwidth. There won't be patches, anything recitified will automatically appear in the main rolling release Also it probably means there is never going to be any excitement / hype about the latest release. Once you install a rolling release all one can say is aha my system is the same as it was 10 years ago - thats something actually. on the bright side, no need to reinstall with every release(Of course Upgrade option is there, but I say Upgrade is fairly usless to 60% of the users, reinstallation will give a different feel than Upgrade) Now I feel should give a try to Arch and Gentoo. You should! It's a great learning experience. I learnt a lot about linux configuration from Gentoo. However with GNOME/Openbox the processors were showing 90-95% use. So among the Ubuntu variants, does any one use any other DE other than the regular GNOME/KDE. Can you enlighten me regarding package management about both Arch and Gentoo? Arch uses pacman, it downloads binary packages and installs them. You also have a tool called yaourt which can install from user configured repos (sort of like an ubuntu ppa but less secure). It can be made to run faster using powerpill which uses a download manager to download in parts from many mirrors. You should go through the wiki, it is very informative. On the back foot Gentoo uses emerge which is a very powerful frontend to portage which is based on FreeBSD's ports system. It usually downloads source and compiles them during the install, using user specified optimizations in /etc/make.conf (this is the main flexibility offered). In make.conf you can specify stuff like architecture and processor specific options so that it's built precisely for your system. There are also mirrors that allow for binary downloads of large applications (like KDE, openoffice etc). They offer a GUI installer these days but I haven't tried it out. The command line way of doing it is fun, takes a weekend and there's lots to learn. Sure I like it... Also I would like to try FreeBSD But it might take me some time. I would like to put an end to this 6 monthly upgrade madness by moving to a rolling release, i.e Arch initially dual booting with Ubuntu. Now pl help with these few Q's: 1. Is this a good Idea at all for a guy not very comfortable with command line (but can live with it if needed) inspite of a 5 year linux Exp? If you are comfortable with Ubuntu then, any GNU/Linux distro should be fine. There a no gimics done by Ubuntu excepts a polish and regular upgrades... Are there any beginner friendly oned out there? Chakra is still Alpha so not so comfortable. Frankly the Arch Documentation and Wiki are the most comprehensive and well thought out i have seen in the recent past. I dont have any experience in Arch, I would appreciate to know your experience with Arch till now. 3. If I can go ahead which should be installed first? Remember dual booting with WinXP, XP is always installed first. Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, Arch with GRUB Old. Naturally the Rolling release will stay, while the other OS might change. Install XP first -- No grub Install Arch next -- since it has a rolling release so no change to grub Install Ubuntu next -- Actually Ubuntu detects more OS's on HDD than any other which I have tried. So I suggest Ubuntu to be last in the list... 4. All my Data with live in separate partitions not along with any OS. So Which FS type is better - EXT3 or EXT4. No WinXP, so no need of NTFS. In addition it is backed up to a USB Hard Disk. Depends on your use, AFAIK EXT4 has better performance with large files and many more pros than EXT3, but EXT3 is well tested since it lives longer. Davmail basically acts as a Calendar gateway to talk to the exchange server using Caldav (OWA or Outlook Web Access). Take any browser and start browsing (Don't do any benchmarking) and you will notice there there will be no difference in browsing speeds, the main reason is we cannot notice the speed difference, it is so negligible (milli / micro seconds). Before saying anything i want to put this on record. Ubuntu is one of the best distro's i have ever used. , its ease in installation, responsiveness to multitude of hardware, the incredibly large and varied repositories, the very decent derivatives (Mint, Ultimate etc) . The huge forum and support. Basically i like it very much Over the recent months there has been a lot of chatter about minor and maybe not so minor aspects. First there was the dropping and inclusion of different programmes (e.g. GIMP) not big things but when many small things add up they become to big. Then there is this Ubuntu is not a democracy, Mark Shuttleworth Sounds crazy saying it like that but to read what he had to say check out Mark Shuttleworth: This is not a democracy http://www.webupd8.org/2010/03/ubuntu-is-not-democratic.html and some related discussions http://www.osnews.com/story/23039/Kicking_in_Open_Doors_Open_Source_Is_Not_a_Democracy and http://www.itworld.com/open-source/101641/open-source-not- democracy?source=smlynch ** There are many reasons to use Linux and one of them, for me, is not to be told what to do by a corporation. Sure Canonical is not the new M$, i doubt it can ever become that. (hope not) But what makes me uncomfortable is the extent of control Canonical is exerting over its user base. Many Linux folks , now, are first time linuxers changed over from Other OS' mainly because of Ubuntu. So not debating the specifics of Mark Shuttleworth's comments and the reactions and the interpretations, I am getting an uneasy feeling. That maybe just maybe we are becoming Ubuntu dependent and too complacent. I can walk blindfolded through a typical Ubuntu install and its subsequent setup of additional programmes, tweaking programmes to work like they should for me. Knowing what repos to add to get exactly what software and where to source software (tuxwire, zyware). I cannot be happier with what i have. But what if we need to move to a freer system. Are there any other distro's out there. Sure there are 600 plus many of them with a passionate user base and with its attendant problem. My questions are how would people feel about trying out a distro other than Ubuntu (specially first time users), in fact have first time linux Ubuntu users tried other distro's and what do they feel. I guess it is quiet hard for any Ubuntu user to move to some other distro, as Ubuntu is the most polished GNU/linux which I can think of. But any other distro out there has same Desktop environment (GNOME), only think we can ever miss is the polishness and not the underlying system. Best alter I can think of is Ubuntu's parent Debian. I started of with fedora 1 and went through a variety and can make another distro do to my bidding. My other question is how many of us dual boot a second linux OS and is your secondary OS as well set as your primary, are you comfortable with it, under all conditions. I think. few years ago people were comfortable, but not anymore with all the full OS virtualization tools like Virtualbox OSE. Everything is easy in a virtual world, isn't it? My 3rd question is what would you suggest people try as a fall back option in case people want to try and alternative. Pass My suggestions are Pardus, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Fedora, Knoppix Others have suggested Arch Linux The few times in the recent past when i tried another distro i very quickly reverted back to Ubuntu, since i was uncomfortable around my system but now i think its worth exploring an alternative in great earnest. +1, I also tried many operating systems like Fedora, Debian, FreeBSD, Solaris ... But only Ubuntu had the taste I wanted (or may be addiction). I am trying out FreeBSD in my virtual environment, hope to make the switch to some OS which is completely community driven. look forward to reactions ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Re: [ubuntu-in] a English-to-Hindi transliteration tool for Ubuntu

Oh really sorry, I dint know the difference of translate and transliterate until now. Thanks However, I am still trying to configure SCIM. Connection broke down yesterday. I guess this will help me with my transliteration needs. That's why I need transliteration. Plus, my Hindi typing needs are limited to just typing my paper diary (quite some pages and majority are in Hindi, since class VIII). Learning Hindi typing while I can't actually touch-type in English right now won't be wise. So, I think transliteration is a good option. And thanks, I will try SCIM anyway. you can try *google translator/ yahoo translator,* both does a fair job, but not great. If you want to use them as a tool* *in ubuntu try* freespeak. sudo apt-get install freespeak *Also, you can try some web based translators as they are cross platform and better updated. Re: [ubuntu-in] Need Help to auto mount ntfs partition
On Tue, Feb 9, 2010 at 1:35 PM, K Ramnarayan ramnaraya...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Hi On my laptop there is ntfs partition (as below) /dev/sda2 normal mount point /media/SharedT6N - ntfs Trying to set it up to auto mount on boot up i inserted the following line in /etc/fstab UUID=21E3CD34484F8674 /media/SharedT6N fuseblkdefaults 0 2 i drew a part of this line from mtab (after mounting the said partition) But there was an error when i rebooted and tried to access this partition. Deleting this line from fstab brought it back to being able to mount. ANy advice on how to automount this partition on start up. If you are using ubuntu 9.04 or later, there is a feature which require password to mount any HDD partition. To disable this option Open file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy On line number 34 allow_activeauth_admin_keep/allow_active replace it by allow_activeyes/allow_active Or visit http://thegeekbox.com/2009/11/mount-partitions-without-password-in-ubuntu-karmic/ Then you can write a small script to mount the partition and add it to cronjob. Also I think *SharedT6N* folder is created on the fly, so you need to mount to a folder which is existing and empty I really don't have knowledge on Fstab, so on. So my suggestions may be novice. ** The reason i want to auto mount is because beagle seems to not be able to search and index any partition unless it is available at start up. thanks and regards ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
