You are on track.
/nessusd/ starts a daemon process, so it is not suppose to do anything

DSL is the way to go...
If you want to install on thumbdrive/Pendrive, then any regular GNU/Linux OS
like Ubuntu/Ferdora will fit in that one GB.

As mentioned in the first post, this is for a full install on a Old computer
with a small HD, not for a Pendrive. Something like a PIII with 6.4GB HD.
And I have already tried DSL. Puppy, SLitaz, SLAX. I love them and use them
as well, but I looking at something other than these.

Oh Sorry for redundancy
In that case, I would suggest you download Minimal Ubuntu Linux, you
can find here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD, and build
upon that like installing LUbuntu, but I haven't tried this one...

This page can come in handy for you

Also I would say, try on Virtualbox before installing on actual machine.

Yes, It should pass through wireless router unless you connect 2 systems via

This affects the internet bandwidth within the network.

If you are using GUI to access files from different machine, then I do not

3) using secure browsers and various defensive addons like noscript
4) using trusted and secure dns to avoid any kind of dns caching
5) using common sense, whether to click on this link or not, whether

That was valuable input, but I see this problem with firefox, if I

If you're planning on using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat on a computer with a
processor older than i686, well... you can't.

Ubuntu 10.10 will be dropping support for i386-i586 processors so it can take
 advantage of the i686 optimizations.

But there seem to be some issues with this: even some new processors which are
especially designed for low power consumption are i586. Such a processor is
the Geode LX800 - a pretty new processor for which a bug has been filled on
Launchpad but which most probably won't be fixed since Geode LX800 is a i586
 processor.

Thanks to Manish for the heads up!

 My Thoughts:

I thought that such moves were what M$ and FrApple would have done, make
existing hard ware obsolete. If this is true its absolutely terrible news for
ubuntu fans, what it might mean is migrating to another linux which will
support a wider range of processors.

What do other folks think about this

This is surely a bad news, if not to all, but to some... I think
Ubuntu or rather any Open Source OS should think about making 100%
users happy, and not 99%...
M$ made similar attempt in Vista and they failed, but that was much
bigger change than what ubuntu has made. So I kind of having mixed

 Dear Friends,

While this happens, I am able to ping the website... What do you think
 the problem is??? Any suggestions???
 ---
 Mallikarjun

 Yesterday (09-Jun-10) I had a similar experience,
with MTNL (Mumbai, adsl broadband) internet access.
Fortuniately I tracked the issue to this:
The ISP's DNS server IPs had been changed
 (from 59.185.0.50 to 59.185.3.10).
The moment I changed my adsl-router DNS settings to follow
the ISP's DNS values (instead of the earlier hard-coded
IPs) the problem was resolved. Please note that the
hard-coded DNS values had been working for a very
long time, perhaps at least six months or more.
 Hope this helps.

:( It din't help, I tried Norton DNS, Google DNS... and the problem
seems to be the same

I am wondering, how could firefox inhibit using internet...

Have you tried leaving ping on for a minute or two? Look for packet
drops. Sometime this could be due to a faulty NIC or network cable.

I am getting some really valuable suggestions, even if my problem is
un-resolved I would not mind...

Here are the results...

305 packets transmitted, 305 received, 0% packet loss, time 304299ms

Negative result :(

Okay one last suggestion :D . Try running Wireshark in the background
when you're browsing. Once you have collected some packets try to see
if you any malformed packets (should show up in red).

I already thought of, waiting for free time
Anyway thanks for another nice suggestion

Same problem here, but i'm using BSNL broadband using firefox 3.5.

I am using BSNL broadband too...

I'd problem in opening sites like
 iitr.ac.in
 wordpress.com/

If you specific sites not opening, then I think you can change DNS and
try... may be nortandns, opendns

I used google public dns as well as my isp's dns. The problem appears to be
same with Fedora 12 too, but Mandriva '08 loads the pages with the same DNS.
I'd been facing it from the last 6 months.

Yes, it pings perfectly but goes into infinite loading of pages from
 firefox, konqueror, etc
but as expected wget doesn't work for the pages .

I don't think it is as bad news as you are claiming. Ubuntu 10.04 is
an LTS and hence it will be supported with bug fixes for 3 years. So
even those who have very old hardware have a choice of running it for
next three years. They will miss new features but that is not
 necessarily bad.

You have a valid point...

No OS, open source or otherwise, can make 100% users happy. Because no
matter what, they always find something to complain about.
Open source is about freedom to choose. And that freedom is also valid
for distribution makers. They have the right to decide what is best in
long run from maintenance point of view. For example. Sparc port of
Ubuntu, which is community maintained, will be decommissioned during
 Maverick cycle.

I meant, making current ubuntu users happy

M$ made similar attempt in Vista and they failed, but that was much

As you have already said Vista was much bigger change. Vista was not
even capable of running on the systems in existence when it was
release. Also the so called 'Vista Capable' systems also were not well
equipped for Vista's intensive memory/processor usage.

Looking at recent buzz around Ubuntu, I am try phase out to some other OS...

Debian is a good choice. Also you can try Fedora.

I am considering Debian and Gentoo

Well there can be many reasons ... I would go this way ...

Do they work in other browsers ? (Try loading the website using a text-based

When I start firefox, others browsers also have some problem

Do you have any addons/extensions installed on firefox ?

No...

Does the webpage you are trying to load has flash ? If so install flashblock

No...

firefox extension and see if it helps.
Do wget of the webpage that doesnt load - does it work ?

Only ping works

Yes. It is perfectly fine. Whatever update was done in version 2 is
going to stay in 3 and 4 as well. Also updates do not usually affect
the other packages depending on the one being updated. If it does
indeed affect other packages, then such packages are updated as well.
You should check the changelog to decide if an update is worth your
bandwidth or not, specifically when package in question is a big one
 like OO.o or Firefox.
Of course you should not ideally skip security updates. And in recent
versions of Ubuntu you get popup every day if you have pending

Re: [ubuntu-in] Two questions about 10.04 (Lucid Lynx)

On Thu, May 13, 2010 at 6:35 PM, Ramnarayan.K ramnaraya...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Friends,

I think, you should have started a new thread...

Thanks for the many replies on Ubuntu 10.04 , they were mostly lucid ;-)

Seems like its been a good ride so far, no major issues, which is really good.

Am guessing as soon as i can get hold of a copy.

Which brings me to the second question (below)

My 9.10 occupies about 12 Gig of space (and lots is available)

 /dev/sda7              22G   12G  8.3G  59% /

I know from experience from 9.10 that is overloaded with multiple
programmes for everything. (since i installed the Ultimate Version)
the good thing was everything worked out of the box (specially media
codecs). The disadvantage obviously too many things meaning a lot more
 updates.

Am not convinced that the default Ubuntu available for download is a
good option - it requires too much tweaking and setting up to many
things - esp if one has to do it in more that 1 machine. ( i will end
up upgrading Ubuntu on 6 machines all in different physical locations
none of who have any decent internet) So the requirement is clear -
find a distro that is basically packed full of stuff and then do the
needful systematically on the individual machines.

I have a suggestion, instead of installing Ubuntu Ultimate, just
install a live Ubuntu and do all the tweaking, installing stuff, and
so on...
Once you are done, install an app called remastersys and create a
remaster CD, which basically creates your system clone, there are some
more options too...

If you install on other systems, there you go... a Ultimate Ubutnu
without unnecessary packages

Jobs included in the individual machines are
 1. Localizing fonts (copy fonts to a /home/foouser/.fonts directory
 2. Setting up local language keyboard and multiple language options
 3. Setting up 2 or 3 different internet access methods (making sure
they work - like the Network Manager in 9.10 works for some and does
not for others) some of which need a wvdial.conf script
 4. Setting up Google earth / skype ??
 6. Setting up offline dictionaries (and artha)
 7. Installing programmes that Ubuntu has dropped (gimp, gthumb,
scribus etc) and many others that never ever come by default (marble,
 nut-nutrition,
and some more that i cannot remember right now
 8. Setting up virtual box
 9. There are a whole lot of system tweaks - setting up autoback up in
 openoffice (for example) eyc

You can create a python script to do all the following, I think you
can spend less time to code than install...
If you find hard to program you can ask some one in community for
help, may be I could accept too... :P

I guess you get the picture , so each machine takes a fair bit of time
and since this is voluntary work (i enjoy seeing the latest and the
bestest running and then see people get happy to have a new version to
enjoy) but it is still a pain in the your know where, jst sitting
around waiting for each machine to.

Am thinking this time i will just do a system upgrade and then check
for broken packages and then redo those. So am waiting to get my hands
on the latest full 7-8 DVD repos. (see question below)

and since its LTS i guess it will be stable for some time.

 Second Question

are there folks selling 10.04 DVD's and the repository If so who has them

and related to this - is it worth waiting a month before installing 10.04 -
seems like there is always stuff that works better after a month of
 corrections

Depends, if you are a normal user, just proceed...
If you are a power user, you can wait... I guess you know answer yourself...

 ***

So again look forward to your thoughts and of course where i could get
 the dvd repos.

 Hi !

Even if you wait for a month and download the CD then, it will be the same
installation image as the one that was released on 29th April. The original
CDs are never respun to apply upgrades.

Whatever goes through the SRU[1] queue till the time you install it, will
be provided as an update via the update-manager along with any security
 fixes that come through.
So either way, you will have to download and install the updates

There is a big difference though...

If he installs after sometime (With updates) -- Less vulnerable and less
bugs

I hope you got the point...

That means a new kernel version is ready to be installed. The reason
it is marked new install, it is infact a new install (not trying to
be funny), after you install there will be 2 kernel versions showing
at boot time (so it is not a update/upgrade, but a new install). Using
synaptic package mgr, you can uninstall the older version of kernel.

Few reason I can think of
1) Upgrading to a new kernel can break your system sometimes, so if it
is a new install, you can test it and stay with new kernel or move
back to old one...
2) some people stick a particular kernel because of their
configurations like OpenVZ (amature explaination, as I am one...)

It is very usual in every release to have a new kernel sooner the release.

Is there a way to upgrade directly to 10.04 using Upgrade manager ?
When i run Update manager, it shows release 8.10 is available.
Do I have to upgrade, release by release,
 8.04 == 8.10,

I would like to comment on these partitions before I can answer your
questions

/boot -- Be careful before making this decision of creating boot partition.
The reason people create boot partition is that it will remain forever and
can add new OSs entries to the boot loader manually. You should get your
hands dirty when you change your OS... As you said, you are going to stick
into a single operating system, I dont think /boot partition is necessary.

swap -- AFAIK people create separate swap partition for security purpose,
so that they can encrypt the partition and save themselves while
hibernation.
If you are a normal user, just avoid it...

/root /home -- I suggest it is a good idea to separate /root and /home
even for normal user, can be helpful while upgradition

It all depends on what kind of user you are... isn't it???

But if i want ONLY install the Linux-Ubuntu on the h.D.D,
 1) what is the best choice for the making the partition?

We cannot say a particular choice is best or so. It all depends on how you
use your system.

 2) and how much space MIN require for the / Boot/root?

/Boot 100 MB is ideal, /root more than 10GB should be fine, also if you
install a lot of stuff root should be bigger

because before i'm using the Linux XP in the office, but from today i
want just have the linux, and need the proper partition which can work for
 long times without any problem..

Gud luck.

GNOME uses about 270 MB of RAM, LXDE uses 185 and OpenBox uses 165 MB.
However with GNOME/Openbox the processors were showing 90-95% use.

So among the Ubuntu variants, does any one use any other DE other than the

the whole system installed on around 1GB and RAM of around 125MB. And how
can this be done. I know i can install the DE/WM in parallel to gnome, but
will it be possible to remove Gnome and install the other DE /WM. Is this at
all possible to install just the base OS and them chose which DE / WM and

Well, it is quiet hard to exactly say that my system uses 160MB of ram,
depends on various factors, like your ram, services running, applications
running, size of swap...

Yes it is definitely possible to completely remove Gnome and install other

but should work AFAIK) and install everything starting from network manager

One can setup X, VNC, SSH and use it like a VM or run and isolate

  systems,
  A question to ask...

Can you enlighten me regarding package management about both Arch and
  Gentoo?

Arch uses pacman, it downloads binary packages and installs them. You
also have a tool called yaourt which can install from user configured
repos (sort of like an ubuntu ppa but less secure). It can be made to
run faster using powerpill which uses a download manager to download
in parts from many mirrors. You should go through the wiki, it is very
 informative.

On the back foot

Gentoo uses emerge which is a very powerful frontend to portage which
is based on FreeBSD's ports system. It usually downloads source and
compiles them during the install, using user specified optimizations
in /etc/make.conf (this is the main flexibility offered). In make.conf
you can specify stuff like architecture and processor specific options
so that it's built precisely for your system.
There are also mirrors that allow for binary downloads of large
applications (like KDE, openoffice etc). They offer a GUI installer
these days but I haven't tried it out. The command line way of doing
it is fun, takes a weekend and there's lots to learn.

Sure I like it...
Also I would like to try FreeBSD
But it might take me some time.

 Quite popular joke:

@insomnia it only takes three commands to install Gentoo
 @insomnia cfdisk /dev/hda  mkfs.xfs /dev/hda1  mount /dev/hda1
 /mnt/gentoo/ chroot /mnt/gentoo/ env-update . /etc/profile
emerge sync cd /usr/portage scripts/bootsrap.sh emerge system
emerge vim vi /etc/fstab emerge gentoo-dev-sources cd
/usr/src/linux make menuconfig make install modules_install
emerge gnome mozilla-firefox openoffice emerge grub cp
 /boot/grub/grub.conf.sample /boot/grub/grub.conf vi
 /boot/grub/grub.conf grub init 6
 @insomnia that's the first one

ROFL

Of course, I suppose it's easier now :)

Re: [ubuntu-in] Ubuntu and Archlinux Dual boot

 Hi

I have been using Linux for the past 5 years, Opensuse initially, then
ubuntu, both dual boot with WinXP. I moved permanently to Ubuntu about 1.5
years ago. I like to keep my System upto date and hence that has involved
upgrading the OS every 6 months.

I would like to put an end to this 6 monthly upgrade madness by moving to a
rolling release, i.e Arch initially dual booting with Ubuntu.

Now pl help with these few Q's:
 1. Is this a good Idea at all for a guy not very comfortable with command
line (but can live with it if needed) inspite of a 5 year linux Exp?

If you are comfortable with Ubuntu then, any GNU/Linux distro should be
fine. There a no gimics done by Ubuntu excepts a polish and regular
upgrades...
Infact, Upgrades have lot of cons than pros mainly waste of time. (Purely my
opinion)

 2. Though Arch is considered the best Rolling release, is it the best
choice for a guy like me? Are there any beginner friendly oned out there?
Chakra is still Alpha so not so comfortable. Frankly the Arch Documentation
and Wiki are the most comprehensive and well thought out i have seen in the
 recent past.

I dont have any experience in Arch, I would appreciate to know your
experience with Arch till now.

 3. If I can go ahead which should be installed first? Remember dual booting
with WinXP, XP is always installed first. Ubuntu comes with GRUB2, Arch with
GRUB Old. Naturally the Rolling release will stay, while the other OS might
 change.

Install XP first -- No grub
Install Arch next -- since it has a rolling release so no change to grub
Install Ubuntu next -- Actually Ubuntu detects more OS's on HDD than any
other which I have tried. So I suggest Ubuntu to be last in the list...

 4. All my Data with live in separate partitions not along with any OS. So
Which FS type is better - EXT3 or EXT4. No WinXP, so no need of NTFS. In
addition it is backed up to a USB Hard Disk.

Depends on your use, AFAIK EXT4 has better performance with large files and
many more pros than EXT3, but EXT3 is well tested since it lives longer.
If you are a normal used, go ahead with EXT4.

I am looking forward to use it as an E-mail client with GPG support
  Calender.
I didn't like Evolution because it was buggy, and reviews say Thunderbird
 is
better by a mile. Then why ain't GNU/Linux Distributions change default
  client to Thunderbird?

This is a techno-political discussion :) Anyway TB is freely
available, so this is more of a moot point.

Anyway which one do you think is better? with reasons please.

I have used TB as well as evolution for my work mails (The server is
Exchange server for calendaring and mails, + IMAP/POP support). For
everything, I find TB (IMAP) + Lightning + Davmail + Enigmail (TB
Extension for GPG) as working better than Evolution. This combination
still has some bugs, etc - but no other good alternative.

Davmail basically acts as a Calendar gateway to talk to the exchange
server using Caldav (OWA or Outlook Web Access). This allows a better
calendar experience than just lightning, if you need Exchange
 Calendaring support.

If you're looking at a purely local calendar, then davmail is not required.

HTH. Let me know if you want more details.

 Abhinav

Thanks for all the input.
After reading all the input, I have come to obvious conclusion that All the
E-mail clients are good and it is actually few features that captures
particular user. So I will try most of aforesaid E-mail clients. Lets see
which one clicks for me...

Thanks anyway...

First of all you r using static IP, manually putting your IP address. The

When you create a logical drive in Virtualbox (VDI), unfortunately it takes
space from harddisk only.
The logical disks will be stored *$HOME/.VirtualBox/HardDisks *folder. You
can copy to some other place and even swap around different operating
systems.

If you have less space, then allocate around 6-7 GB (10GB should be great).
But problem with Windows XP is we cant have complete control over the growth
of the size. It keeps growing fast as we install applications.

once again thank you very much

At any cost I will avoid Swiftfox, just because it is closed source. As you
said, it is more of the security concern than ethics for me.
We wont even know what is happening behind the scenes.

Also, I would like to add one more point.
Take any browser and start browsing (Don't do any benchmarking) and you will
notice there there will be no difference in browsing speeds, the main reason
is we cannot notice the speed difference, it is so negligible (milli / micro
seconds). Also the benchmarks are based on Javascript rendering speed, to
the best of my knowledge, most of the websites have more of HTML/CSS than
javascripts.

after installing it, i goto new virtual machine wizard.then click on

^^^ I don't think Virtualbox does that (detect the XP installed on the

virtual machine or using an existing VDI file.

Even I dont think it is possible as there is no direct connection of the

Now i click on next.I have 2 GB RAM on my machine. For base memory i gave
 512MB size.Then i click to next.then i came to hard disk.i clicke don

This is because you did not install any operating system on the virtual

What you can do is...

1) If you have iso image of bootable XP cd then it is fine or Insert XP CD
2) Right click on XP on Ubuntu powered off select settings, click
CD/DVD-Rom and click on the options you would like to.
3) now boot up and install the XP as you would do normally but it happens
very fast (I donno the reason)

Once installation is done, unmount the CD/DVD mounted and you can start XP
on Ubutnu

question please post back.

i don't know how to configure the virtual box?

You can either migrate your existing XP installation to a VDI file
(virtualbox image) but as far as I know it is a convoluted process involving
intermediate tools like qemu. You can install XP on a new virtual machine.
Instructions to do so can be had here [1]. It is for an older version of
Ubuntu but the gist of it remains the same.

remaining space (This is the best idea I can think of...)

 2. What is the max size a FAT 16 partition (and FAT 32) be - i think
 FAT partitions have a limit

According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_Allocation_Table
FAT-12 32MB
FAT-16 2GB(or 4GB with 64 bit cluster size)
FAT-32 2TB (or 8TB or 16TB)

:)

 would appreciate tips.

Absolutely no problem, infact it should work great

Yes

Shipit does not send free 64bit CD's :(

I bet they are absolutely the same...

multitude of hardware, the incredibly large and varied repositories, the very
decent derivatives (Mint, Ultimate etc) . The huge forum and support.
Basically i like it very much

 **
There are many reasons to use Linux and one of them, for me, is not to be told
what to do by a corporation. Sure Canonical is not the new M$, i doubt it can
 ever become that. (hope not)

But what makes me uncomfortable is the extent of control Canonical is exerting
over its user base. Many Linux folks , now, are first time linuxers changed
over from Other OS' mainly because of Ubuntu.

So not debating the specifics of Mark Shuttleworth's comments and the
 reactions
and the interpretations, I am getting an uneasy feeling. That maybe just maybe
we are becoming Ubuntu dependent and too complacent.

I can walk blindfolded through a typical Ubuntu install and its subsequent
setup of additional programmes, tweaking programmes to work like they should
for me.  Knowing what repos to add to get exactly what software and where to
 source software (tuxwire, zyware).

I cannot be happier with what i have. But what if we need to move to a freer
system. Are there any other distro's out there. Sure there are 600 plus many
of them with a passionate user base and with its attendant problem.

My questions are how would people feel about trying out a distro other than
Ubuntu (specially first time users), in fact have first time linux Ubuntu
 users
tried other distro's and what do they feel.

I guess it is quiet hard for any Ubuntu user to move to some other
distro, as Ubuntu is the most polished GNU/linux which I can think of.
But any other distro out there has same Desktop environment (GNOME),
only think we can ever miss is the polishness and not the underlying
system.
Best alter I can think of is Ubuntu's parent Debian.

I started of with fedora 1 and went through a variety and can make another
 distro do to my bidding.

My other question is how many of us dual boot a second linux OS and is your
secondary OS as well set as your primary, are you comfortable with it, under
 all conditions.

I think. few years ago people were comfortable, but not anymore with
all the full OS virtualization tools like Virtualbox OSE. Everything
is easy in a virtual world, isn't it?

My 3rd question is what would you suggest people try as a fall back option in
case people want to try and alternative.

Pass

My suggestions are Pardus, Mandriva, OpenSuse, Fedora, Knoppix
 Others have suggested Arch Linux

The few times in the recent past when i tried another distro i very quickly
reverted back to Ubuntu, since i was uncomfortable around my system but now i
think its worth exploring an alternative in great earnest.

+1, I also tried many operating systems like Fedora, Debian, FreeBSD,
Solaris ... But only Ubuntu had the taste I wanted (or may
be addiction). I am trying out FreeBSD in my virtual environment, hope
to make the switch to some OS which is completely community driven.

 look forward to reactions

I am quiet certain that there is a cost difference but not a huge margin.

But the thing is, Y should one has to pay for the operating system

Unformatted boxes are seldom sold, as the profit margin is less for the vendors.

There should definitely be some changes there that you can just remove

remove check for hardware drivers, don't use evolution uninstall it, not a
laptop - remove power manager, not using remote desktop - remove it,
update manager, user folder update - remove

Thanks done all what you said

Also, I would remove the trash applet and any other applets in the panel
 you don't use.

i like trash there, but may be in the interest of speed it will be better

I dont know much about your initial question but have a few suggestions

   - Avoid startup services like Apache, mysql, samba (Which most people
use very rarely) to start at boot time.

   - Also if you are not using evolution (as many people dont use), remove
   it except evolution-data-server-common.

   - run *sudo apt-get autoremove*

   - Enlist all the softwares you dont use and remove them
   - during boot there is a key combination which shows verbose more of
startup(I donno key combination) observe which takes more time and act upon
   that

there are some app i don't know much about
 like
 gnome keyring daemon

(This is as per my knol) Gnome Keyring daemon is a great tool to protect
your logins, like if you provide your login to empathy or thunderbird and so
on..., it will encrypt and protect with a single password either your login
password or some other password which you give for the first time. You can
change using Password and encryption keys/Seahorse tool tool.

 GNOME Settings Daemon Helper -
 /usr/lib/gnome-session/helpers/gnome-settings-daemon-helper
 Itca Client
No Name - no description (no command as well)
 Print Queue applet

Print related services (I donno much)

 Screesaver

I dont know the use of this but if you stop this service, system power
management will not work as expected

Seahorse Daemon

I works with gnome keyring daemon

hope this helps

To monitor your progress, I suggest bootchart, it will make graphs of
 boot in /var/log/bootchart.

 will chech this out

Mallikarjun, but I need a transliterator not translator. Anyway nice to
know freespeak, I will certainly use it.

Oh really sorry, I dint know the difference of translate and transliterate
until now. Thanks

However, I am still trying to configure SCIM. Connection broke down
yesterday. I guess this will help me with my transliteration needs.

Because I have never typed in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard layout. That's

typing my paper diary (quite some pages and majority are in Hindi, since
 class VIII).

Learning Hindi typing while I can't actually touch-type in English right
 now won't be wise.
So, I think transliteration is a good option.

And thanks, I will try SCIM anyway.

you can try *google translator/ yahoo translator,* both does a fair job,
 but not great.
If you want to use them as a tool* *in ubuntu try* freespeak.

 sudo apt-get install freespeak

*Also, you can try some web based translators as they are cross platform
 and better updated.

I think *scim* does a good job of letting you type in Hindi. It works
well in Ubuntu, though I have not been able to get its Kubuntu variant
(skim) work yet. It also has a phonetic keyboard layout. I wonder why you
 are insisting on 'transliteration' tool.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Need Help to auto mount ntfs partition

2010-02-12 Thread ಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ್

 Hi

 Hi

On my laptop there is ntfs partition (as below)
 /dev/sda2 normal mount point /media/SharedT6N - ntfs

Trying to set it up to auto mount on boot up i inserted the following line
 in
 /etc/fstab

 UUID=21E3CD34484F8674 /media/SharedT6N   fuseblkdefaults 0
   2

i drew a part of this line from mtab (after mounting the said partition)

But there was an error when i rebooted and tried to access this partition.
Deleting this line from fstab brought it back to being able to mount.

ANy advice on how to automount this partition on start up.

If you are using ubuntu 9.04 or later, there is a feature which require
password to mount any HDD partition.

To disable this option

Open file

/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.devicekit.disks.policy

On line number 34

  allow_activeauth_admin_keep/allow_active

replace it by
   allow_activeyes/allow_active

Or visit
http://thegeekbox.com/2009/11/mount-partitions-without-password-in-ubuntu-karmic/

Then you can write a small script to mount the partition and add it to
cronjob.

Also I think *SharedT6N* folder is created on the fly, so you need to mount
to a folder which is existing and empty

I really don't have knowledge on Fstab, so on. So my suggestions may be
novice.

 **
The reason i want to auto mount is because beagle seems to not be able to
search and index any partition unless it is available at start up.

 thanks and regards
 ram
