[ubuntu-art] Ideas Header and Title Font Issues

2008-01-20 Thread Thorsten Wilms
Hi!

Working on a design for the Ideas Brainstorming website header, I found
that the Ubuntu Title ttf doesn't match the letters in the official logo
SVG. It's not a bit different, but rather much. So I think use of that
font should be discouraged, especially for the word ubuntu.

The letters in the logo SVG have more nodes than necessary. The b is
really bad.

Well, see it on
http://thorwil.wordpress.com/2008/01/20/ubuntu-ideas-header/

I think with a good scan of the original artwork, I could trace the logo
letters in a much cleaner way.

[ubuntu-art] Alrighty: code cleanup, packaging, testing, video, blogging

2008-01-20 Thread Jason Brower
Code Cleanup,
We will start to do the code cleanup. If you have any experience in the
matter it would be really great to have your changes sent either here as
a diff or to your own bzr location. I will merge it all as it comes. I
personally am not that good at it. But the latest release should be a
lot more readable than before.

Packaging,
We have got to get this. I don't know how, but it should be done before
our submission on the first of February to Ubuntu. With out a package
almost all chances are lost to get this into Ubuntu, let alone the live
CD. If you haven't blogged asking for someone to package I would do it.

Testing,
As always, we love having testing. We need to find those little quirks
that are a little annoying. One that I don't like is the layers are not
remembered when you add another object. It would be nice to have that
working. I am going to play with getting the layers to move on each
click, rather than clicking and not seeing any change when really there
was. :D Does anyone know how to compare two pixbufs? :)

Video,
I will be making a video of memaker tonight. If you have any requests
for this video I would be happy to help you out. I will make more
formats too. Flash and Ogg in many details. :D I hope that it can be
viewable for anyone.

Blogging,
Boy, I think this is where we have our power. We have got to share this
with everyone. I encourage everyone to blog about it and tell what they
like. What part they contributed. What you have learned. Etc... Let's
make this release a booming success. :D

So, What does everyone think?

ofcourse kingsly that works out when you have a small number of
  members in
the team.. Consider for ex: You are a division head of a company and
  700
people are working under you.. Its just like saying write your ideas
  in a
sheet of paper and keep it on your table; we'll collect it and look
  into
it..And when the collection of sheets come the boss must be a real
  KALAKAR
with a hell lot of patience to look into each of those.. And it isnt
practically feasible due to time factor.. Ofcourse our loco team is
  small
compared to the larger community but.. when considered solely 700 and
  odd is
quite a big number.. Secondly why I thought I would register up a
sprint/meeting on LP with the probable dates so that attendees/people
  who
are interested can register themselves for the meeting is the people
  who are
interested around the world can join.. In short:
If anyone wants to speak on any topic in the above mentioned agenda
  then
they would register themselves as speakers of a particular topic (say
  for
ex: Future of ubuntu India) So three wiki pages are required
(1). indicating the number of speakers and the topic they are
  speaking..
(2).indicating the time slot for each speaker..
(3). As said above, indicating the status of the idea i.e whether its
  in
discussion/deferred/approved with a brief description of that idea..
  and if
the idea is approved it will come up on our current projects page with
  the
name of the assignee..(I thought these things were implied when
  scheduling
for a meet, but thanks kingsly for your query..:) )
   Any Comments are most welcome.

I think I am more confused now than before. Absolutely. no clue on
what you are trying to say. May be I am dumb.

It makes great sense to have some common sense..!

Here it goes..
Agenda topic is ' An Overview of Linux scene in India With Special reference
to Ubuntu '
and it is aimed at creating an idea pool to help students and newbies
contribute actively towards ubuntu.. As I said above going about this topic
as I thought would involve the following:

three wiki pages are required
(1). indicating the number of speakers and the topic they are speaking..(for
example: Future of Ubuntu India, contributing to ubuntu for dummies and so
on)
(2).indicating the time slot for each speaker..
(3). As said above, indicating the status of the idea i.e whether its in
discussion/deferred/approved with a brief description of that idea.. and if
the idea is approved it will come up on our current projects page with the
name of the assignee..

And the date I thought was 26th January 2008, Saturday evening at 18:00 IST
as it is a holiday and will be convenient to most of them I presume...

Any comments welcome..

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu Installation Problem

2008-01-20 Thread Rishi Saikia
Hi,

This is regarding the query I'd posted regarding installation of 7.10 on a
dual-boot XP/6.06.

Since the 7.10 LiveCD was giving me problems, I installed 7.04 from it's
liveCD and then did an internet upgrade to 7.10. Worked flawlessly!

Thanks all for your help!

[1] Learn mailing list etiquettes please. You are quoting an entire mail
or half the thread to give a 2 line reply and we have to run through
twice or thrice the length of the screen to know what you have replied.
Understand what quoting is and make effective use of it in future.
[2] It doesn't look like an online discussion on IRC. We mostly prefer
to drop in, put our thoughts and keep moving, while someone takes the
responsibility of aggregating and publishing a MoM, places a final draft
in the wiki which gets fixed after final comments from all the members.
[3] Thank god it's on a holiday and am out!(I do not have internet at

not possible for me) ;) Good luck.

Welcome. But, what do you mean by Indian Edition of Ubuntu?
  However, I've
been out of luck in finding any useful information about the project.
There does exist a Ubuntu LoCo page but all it talks about is adding
support for regional languages, translation ? Is that all that is there
 on the agenda ?
Localization and local language support is considered to be important
and an important venture for Loco Teams.
Is there no interest in development of new features ?
new functionality (or more usable/discoverable) not found in other
 ubuntu distributions ?
Either? A lot of our members are involved in various Ubuntu related
development and contribution. Can we know what you actually mean by
that? You mean developing new software?

Please enlighten me if the project is more than mere lang support.
The project also focuses on increasing contribution to Ubuntu, localized
support and help, etc.

[ubuntu-uk] ram voltage

2008-01-20 Thread fazzy.baboon
I have just successfully built my new computer! Everything runs smoothly, bar 2
or 3 issues.
The main one is my ram. I have a Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R motherboard, which
supports both DDR2 and DDR3 ram. On it, I have attempted to install 4GB DDR2

Does anyone know the required settings for this to work?

Hmm, I appear to have hit send too early. My apologies.

Video editing under linux can be done in lots of applications. Here's a few
you might try:-

Kino, cinelerra, avidemux. All of which work to a greater or lesser degree.

If you're brave also try:-

Pitivi, Lives (neither of which work) [yet].

If you're foolhardy also consider:-

GNEVE.

However if you tell us what you want to do, then we might be able to help.
However I suspect a significant amount of advice will be of the try the
ones listed above and see how they work out for you.

Cheers,
Al.

Hi,

According to crucial:-

http://crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=GA-P35C-DS3R

You need a matched pair of 2GB sticks. You don't say whether you are using a
pair or a single 4GB stick.

It claims the following sticks are compatible:-

http://crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=392CD53EA5CA7304

Which say that they are 1.8V parts.

Interestingly the 1GB parts are 2.2V

http://crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=F6D0533FA5CA7304

If you can boot to Ubuntu using the 2GB parts you can use dmidecode to see
what voltage they are currently running at.

For example here's what my laptop says:-

Handle 0x0007, DMI type 5, 20 bytes
Memory Controller Information
Error Detecting Method: None
Error Correcting Capabilities:
None
Supported Interleave: One-way Interleave
Current Interleave: One-way Interleave
Maximum Memory Module Size: 4096 MB
Maximum Total Memory Size: 8192 MB
Supported Speeds:
Other
Supported Memory Types:
DIMM
SDRAM
Memory Module Voltage: 2.9 V
Associated Memory Slots: 2
0x0008
0x0009
Enabled Error Correcting Capabilities:
Unknown

This gives you an indicator whether the voltage needs to go up (or indeed
down).

Cheers,
Al.

Hi dov,

I just wanted to say thank for all this detailed info. Also, the ASUS
Eee PC sounds like a fun practical PC to have (I've recommend it to
a friend who wants to use a laptop for standard tasks..) and I'll
probably still get a Dell as I'd like to still be able to play around
with Ubuntu. I imagine a Dell PC will give me the ability to more
readily explore and experiment than the ASUS EEE?

I'll probably wait a few more months anyway to see whether Dell AU
releases a Dell with an Ubuntu option. And also see how the ASUS eee
is handling.. sounds like it's pretty successful to date!

bang for your buck though and it has a good Dell-Linux section on the

enough in the process to give the following tips:

 - For general Laptop selection, try and get one with nVidia instead of
ATI (although the ATI drivers for Linux are improving a lot)
 - Try and get a model that is supported for Linux in the US.
 - You can download the Dell version of Ubuntu Gutsy off their website
with all their hacks and drivers in it. Unfortunately it's a DVD sized
 download. No idea why.
 - When you reformat the hard drive, leave the two small Dell
partitions intact (one at the start of the drive and another at the
end). If you have issues with your laptop, they expect that you will
be able to run their own diagnostics on it to help them with problem
shooting. The other partition is a restore partition that restores the
whole hard drive to it's original specs when it left the factory.
 - If you adapt your system on the Dell website (I recommend that you
do!), choose XP instead of Vista. The price of the OS's looks the
same, but they increase the price of the OTHER parts of the laptop if
you select Vista. Spread the price elsewhere.

I really do recommend the Dells though. They're working hard to be
Linux friendly overall and they can't be beaten on price.

While you're in NZ, Dick Smith used to sell computers without an OS
and hand you a Linux CD on the way out. Not sure if they still do
 though...

Can I use Debian DVD's to install on Ubuntu

2008-01-20 Thread squareyes
Hi all,
I have a 3 DVD set of Debian 4 Etch, and was wondering if I can use
them to
install applications like Scribus, Inkscape etc. on Ubuntu 7.04 ?

I have friends who have Ubuntu running on machines with no Internet access,
and thought if I could add the DVD's to their (mine too, have slow dial up)
apt.sources list and use them as repositories. Would save them bringing
their boxes here
and installing via my slow dialup.

Are there any problems that may rear their ugly heads.

Many thanks in advance.

No is the short answer.
Not safely, and without causing major long term issues is the longer
answer.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] recuperar particao

vc não precisa do .configure make make install para isto, apenas
clique aqui.

Vai
voltar ao gdm daí você entra no KDE. As sessões vão estar no F7 e F8

Outro jeito simples:

[Ubuntu-BR] Gutsy + GeForce 8600 GT + 2 monitores

2008-01-20 Thread Magno Kretzschmar Nardin
Amigos,

drivers restritos do Kernel. Tudo ok.

configuração do Xinerama no arquivo xorg.conf (linha 103, no

naquilo.

Ubuntu 7.10 (sistema principal), primeiro slave W98 apenas 1Gb e segundo

A última pergunta:
td desconfigurado, as tabelas e tals.

Desde já, agradeço a atenção!

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] Gutsy + GeForce 8600 GT + 2 monitores

2008/1/20 Magno Kretzschmar Nardin [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 Amigos,

drivers restritos do Kernel. Tudo ok.

configuração do Xinerama no arquivo xorg.conf (linha 103, no

naquilo.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] HD nao reconhecido.

2008-01-20 Thread Artur Oliveira Gomes
Salles,

sudo fdisk -l

Cole aqui o resultado e nos envie.

[ubuntu-marketing] Universe move backlash

2008-01-20 Thread Cody A.W. Somerville
Hello Developers Jono,

CC: ubuntu-marketing

If you've heard my position on the migration of the xubuntu-specific
packages to universe, my biggest concern was the community issues revolving
around the move. Since the infrastructure for building the ISOs have been
updated, the only difference between having the xubututu-specific packages
in main and universe is the audience who can upload to that repository and
small policies/procedures changes. However, this e-mail is not to rehash the
number of concerns I had brought up but to address one specifically.
Unfortunately, the migration from main to universe has resulted in confusion
and some misleading news posts.

For example:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Xubuntu_is_no_longer_supported_by_Canonical

We also received our first confused user in #xubuntu shortly after the above
article appeared on digg:

[01:06] bytor4232 So does this mean anything:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Xubuntu_is_no_longer_supported_by_Canonical
[01:07] bytor4232 Are just the packages moving to universe, or is Xubuntu
as a project going away?
[01:07] bytor4232 I do so love the Xubuntu live CD.

After I explained that the change had no direct effect on the end-user and
that we would continue to provide the xubuntu-desktop package and Xubuntu
ISOs, he expressed his original fears/interpretations:

[01:29] bytor4232 Whew.
[01:30] bytor4232 I'm extremely happy about that. My fear, and the fear
of the digger at the link above, is that Ubuntu was trying to re-absorb all
the specialized distro spinoffs, like xubuntu, edubuntu, and kubuntu.
[01:31] bytor4232 I like the fact that Ubuntu has specialized projects
like Xubuntu.

Jono/Marketing Team: Would it be possible to do something PR wise to defuse
the situation?

Thanks,

Cody

Hi all!

I wanted to read some meeting notes about the kickoff meeting[1], but
some of them are still missing. Can someone add them?
The following meeting notes are missing:

 * session 4B spare slot
 * /education on ubuntu [5]

In the session coordination within ubuntu-be.org we decided to keep

It would be nice if all actions plans that were discussed in the meeting

So if you remember a action item, please add the bug!

Hi,

I don't know if I'm allowed to edit the wiki(in the promotian materials
section) but I've found a better deal as for where to get posters:

www.maxevent.be

This is where we as a student organization always get our posters for
our parties. This is the price (incl BTW)

* maxevent.be - €145.20 for first 250 + €15.73 for next 250 (also 5%
sponsorship might be possible)

+ we have had really good experience with this company, always on time
and great quality! (they also make flyers and promo-wear and such)

Just my 2 cents.

Hardy

deb-src http://ru.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ hardy multiverse

$ sudo apt-get update

$ mkdir /tmp/flash
$ cd /tmp/flash
$ sudo apt-get build-dep flashplugin-nonfree
$ sudo apt-get -b source flashplugin-nonfree
$ gdebi-пел flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu4_amd64.deb

UUID'ы!

$ lspci | grep Ethernet
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Attansic Technology Corp. L2 100 Mbit

Mozilla.
