Re: Reapproval time

2010-03-06 Thread Peter Williams
G'day Melissa and Ubuntu-au e-list,

Actually, I'm replying to Melissa D's post to this e-list. I probably
*should* change the subj of this msg to something like My
reintroduction - I use 2 flavours of Linux: Mandriva 2010.0 Free
Mint 8 'Helena' (2010 Free) (I have not configured this email acct to
let me change the subj of reply msgs... I think it's one of the
hundreds of gmail settings which I have not enabled *SMILE* )

I first subscribed to this e-list a couple of years back when I first
started as a newbie linux Ubuntu user and self-installer and admin of
my home Ubuntu pc.

Now in 2010, I have 2 computers running different flavours of Linux:

(a) a desktop pc with very good specs incl 4 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD. I
forget what the processors but it's pretty fast. Maybe 2.3 G Hz dual
processor (?). I have an old Dell brand monitor so I'm pretty sure
that it cannot handle 3D desktop effects.

The OS installed is Linux Mandriva 2010.0 Free 32 bit. This was
upgraded from Mandriva 2009 Free via an online upgrade and online
installation. The system is pretty stable but I am having some
problems installing the necessary packages for networking... 'cos I
didn't know what I was doing ... I was trying to config a small
network with my (b) laptop {explained below}... it's not happy. I am
currently getting the torrent download of the dvd iso for the Mandriva
2010.0 Free 32bit bootable dvd, so that I can do a clean install of it

(b) a HP Laptop w/similar specs processor, 4 GB RAM, wide LCD display,
500 GB HDD, wireless internal modem. (It came pre-installed with M$
Windows)... I didn't even bother booting it up or backing it up... I
just did a clean install of Mint 7. That was quite some time ago. A
few weeks back I installed a clean ver of Linux Mint 8 from a bootable
live Mint 8 cd -- downloaded via iso from the Mint download site. It's
what I am using now, to compose the email.

Both (a) and (b) computers share the same Telstra Bigpond ADSL
Broadband connection to my home, here in West Hobart. Bigpond have
been doing a lot of work lately to upgrade the speed of my connection
(for users, generally, not just me). I use an inexpensive USB hub to
share my Bigpond (older) USB ADSL modem and both computers. This works
well for me to use both pc's to connect to the internet at the same
time. Theoretically, it should be straight forward for me to network
the desktop/laptop together -- but I think I need to reinstall
Mandriva 2010.0 Free onto pc (a) for the bootable dvd I'm currently
downloading.

Anyway, I'm no longer *officially* a Ubuntu user. But Linux Mint 8 is
strongly derived from Ubuntu... So, if it's okay by Melissa I'd like
to stay on this list. Also, it [this e-list] seems to be quite
low-volume so it appeals to me. ;-)))

One final note comparing one small difference 'tween the 2 OSes I use.
I like to use Free Pascal-based GUI RAD Compiler called Lazarus... for
occassional proposed open source development... (nothing serious or
yet gone publc by me for Lazarus). It [Lazarus] is basically a free
Delphi clone developer language... written using itself and compiled
requiring also free pascal. The latest ver of Lazarus OO-Pascal
Delphi-like RAD compiler for Mint 8 the latest ver is 0.9.26.4 and for
Mandriva 2010.0 Free it's 0.9.28.2. Note that if you use Subversion
software to download and compile the source you can use different
snapshots of it. I think the latest stable snapshot of the Lazarus
source is 0.9.29.2. And there are also snapshots of later vers made
daily which are alpha may not be stable. ( I have not yet learnt to
use subversion, so I'm stuck with the current ver in the package
manager. Learning Subversion is on my todo list.. and there are
tutorials about it on the Lazarus wiki-website.) Not sure which ver
Ubuntu supports as latest.

Cheers ;-))) Happy Linuxing -- whether you are a developer,
administrator or end-user.

Help!!! Something is using most of my HDD space!!!

2009-02-11 Thread Peter Williams
Hello All,

My problem is with this pc (this desktop) running Ubuntu with Gnome DE...

I don't know what is taking up most of my space... I don't think it's the
Ubuntu installation itself. But something is hogging most of the HDD and
leaving me with only 3.2GB free hard disc space.

Note that the HDDs in this pc is one terabyte (as 2 x 500 GB HDD). I will

I'm to obtain this info.

  /dev/sda1 43G 38G 3.7G 92% /

allocated/partitioned any of the rest of your drives.

I had a look at your fdisk -l output (sorry, I didn't before) and I saw
that /dev/sda1 is almost all of the disk, definitely a lot more than the
43G that df is reporting. That's quite bizarre.

pleased to finally met so very many friendly faces... everyone was very
nice!!! (of course!)

My system now seems to be quite stable.

This website help me a lot:

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/puregnomehardy

I ended up using the *Remove Kubuntu*
Pasting the command (in the black box) into the terminal shell (which is an
extremely long command!!!)

Fingers-crossed it seems to have worked. I now have a Gnome DE with Ubuntu
8.04 - the Hardy Heron - released in April 2008 (according to the help
page).

I'm now happily using AMAROK fantastic music playing program and listening
to some of my ripped music -- The Beatles!

I'm still gradually tweaking my system -- but it seems to be working fine!!!

Can you explain further? Kubuntu 8.04 (which I'm using) comes with KDE
3.5. Did you install the kde4 package?

and only use the Gnome Desktop Manager with
  KDE 3.5.

Why not just use KDE 3.5?

I used the Synaptic Package Manager to remove much of the KDE 4
with the intention of keeping KDE 3.5 and using the Gnome Desktop
 Manager.

 You probably removed KDE 3.5.

If I boot my computer WITHOUT the Mint Linux 5.1 Live Boot disk -- then
I get dumped at the terminal login screen for Kubuntu 8.04 (I think).
The terminal login screen confuses me no-end

As Eberhard said, you should be able to just enter the same user name
and password you used for the graphical login. If you can successfully
 login, do:

 sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop --reinstall

That should install Kubuntu again. It may take a long time. When it
 completes, do

 sudo reboot

Your computer will restart, and KDE (3.5) should be up and running again.

If you can't login, post the actual prompt you're looking at.

  quote: ---

System Settings / Advanced / Autostart -- click Add Program. Type in
nm-applet which is the Gnome one. From then on it should start with the
  KDE Session.

  end quote.

That's information about NetworkManager. It won't help you get your GUI
 back.

And the newer KDE 4 programs were conflicting with the older KDE 3.5
 programs.

Yes, a beginner really shouldn't be using kde4 on 8.04.

The remove Kubuntu part obviously didn't give you a GUI (it just removes

 which installs GNOME.

Re: c-nile virus

2009-01-15 Thread Peter Williams
Hello Andrew and Everyone (who likes to use Ubuntu Operating System),

cc: to *Ern Williams* (my Dad in Victor Harbor, South Australia )

and cc to: *Ms Tracey Onyett* who works for an Organization called 'Wise
Employment Australia' and who has been trying to help me look for a job to
do part-time or on a casual basis.

and cc: *Alvaro GP* who an amazingly clever computer person good friend,
living in Malaga, Spain, in Europe.

Hello All,

My apologies for typing such a long message.

I think I should try to explain why I sent the email (yesterday) about this
virus called c-nile. Please pass the word around that in particular to
Micro$oft Windows users whom I suggest need to check for this very bad email
virus ;-(

My Dear Dad who is in his 80s (I get confused about his exact age), he was
born in 1926... So you can work out exactly how old he is. Anyway, Dad and
Mum live together is a lovely place house in Victor Harbor, South Australia.
They have been married for 51 years and are still very much in Love #GREAT
BIG SMILE#

Dad has an extremely modern computer with Micro$oft Windowz Vista Pro with
all the latest Service Packs and virus checkers, and spam checkers, and
trojan horse checkers etc etc etc.

My Dad (Ern Williams) loves to use his computer for all types of things. For
example: playing Mahjongg Tile matching games, web games (of many different
types), playing find-a-word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, viewing funny jokes and
seeing beautiful multi-media (of all kinds) of artwork of things like:
beautiful artworks (of all kind) and pretty graphics of flowers, landscapes,
animals, children etc etc etc.

Anyway, I digress (I apologize) - My father (Ern Williams) send me an email
warning me that his computer had been affected by this e-mail virus called '
*c-nile*'. It sounds horrible -- it still disgusts and appalls me at the
horrible e-mail viruses which these stupid and cruel people create and
infect people with !!!

Apparently my Dad has now removed the c-nile virus, however he was telling
me about it in his email to me... so, as I want to warn other people to
remove it. I think that a good anti-virus checker program *SHOULD* be able
to remove it!!! I hope it does!

I fully admit that I can tend to be *quite naive*!!! :-) I am an amiable
person and actually I like it try to encourage people to learn to use their
computers and not be worried about their computers playing up. E.g. I like
to help people to use their computer in a productive and fun ways!!! *Checking
for horrible viruses etc is far from fun!!! but it seems, unfortunately, a
necessity of life.*

Actually, when I lived in Canberra, ACT, I worked for the Royal Australian
Navy, in the Australian Federal Government Dept of Defence (eg the Public
Service). I worked there for 23 years and even tho' I became quite sick with
Schizophrenia, I still remained employed as a Draftsman (drawing with pen
and ink) and also with a wide range of CAD software.

I also became a Technical Officer and designed many many Databases and used
most of the so-called Micro$oft Office applications. And I designed Websites
for the RAN !!! I was also the computer help person for the Directorate of
the RAN in which I worked!!! So, I helped people to fix their computers when
they didn't like to use them or were having difficulties with them!!! I
generally found this to be both difficult and also extremely rewarding to
help people understand how to get the most from their computers and not be
afraid of using it!!! SMILE

In other words, I really enjoyed this because I found it to be greatly
rewarding and, although not easy, it was a Good Thing to do ;-)))

*Now please don't misunderstand me* *SMILE* Although I have used computers
for many years and I have become very productive at using them... I still
get very confused at learning Linux and How to do things like dual-boot
between different OSes.

I'm getting off topic... sorry about that. I am now using *Mint Linux
v5.1*with the Gnome desktop environment (I think that the correct term
for it).
It is performing absolutely rock-solid !!! eg. I'm using *Firefox* as my
web-browser and it has all of the latest updates. *I'm extremely happy with
it* !!!

My pc still has some teething problems... but that's life I guess *SMILE*.

My view of life is that the proverbial glass is half-full, not half-empty.

Now if only I could figure out how to get my repositories working
correctly, then that would be a big help! :-) For some reason my Synaptic
Package Manager (that's what its called) was NOT happy... I think that I had
typed in the wrong repository server addresses!?!?! ( I'm trying to use the
correct terminology... but I'm not too sure of the correct buzz-words and
jargon to use -- I still regard myself to be a beginner at Mint Linux
 ;-)

Yours Faithfully and With Much Love,

(wishing that your computer works well

and doesn't give you head-aches!!!)

2009-01-09 Thread Peter Williams
To Alex and all the ppl who use Lazarus Language,

Hi Alex and All,

Thanks for your reply. I think I'll stick with Mint Linux Gnome for a bit
longer. I think the main problem I'm having is that although it work fine
after I've booted-up with the Gnome FailSafe Mode, when my computer does a
Hibernate or Suspend... then it gets problems. ;-(

I still regard myself as only a Linux newbie beginner ;-)))

I believe you when you tell me that Xubuntu is a good OS. *SMILE* It's just
than I get tired when ppl advice me to install ANOTHER Linux Operating
System. I already have different versions of Kubuntu installed But I
don't use then.

I think I'll need to use the Synaptic Package Manager to somehow re-install
my Mint Linux ver 5.1 (?) Gnome OS... I think the problem is the I have too
many KDE programs install and that's upsetting my poor Gnome Operating
System -- which I reallly really like, even tho' I've only been using my
Mint Linux Gnome OS for about one week or so.

Can some kind person please help me to re-install my Mint Linux Gnome OS???
I think that I *SHOULD* bootup the Linux command line system... but to be
honest -- the Linux Command Line system (? if that's the correct name for
it) -- well sometimes it scares the bejesuses out of me!!! (SMILE) I'm an
old Micro$oft Windowz user from many years ago.. while I did use Windowz
(many many different versions) and other OSes... I still have trouble
remembering Linux commands!!!

I figure that I should be using the Synaptic Package Manager or the Mint
Installer -- correct?!?! But I've forgotten how to use them (since I was
away on XMAS Holidays for about a fortnight!). Please don't laugh at me!!!
:-)

I'd really appreciate some help fixing my broken Mint Linux Gnome OS. It's
not happy with some of the KDE programs...

Yours Sincerely and With Much Love,
{ happily using Mint Linux Gnome OS }

2009-01-06 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Dave and Everyone,

2009/1/7 Dave Hall dave.h...@skwashd.com

 Hi,

I am not sure if you are aware that linux.conf.au will be in Hobart
later this month. This is one of the best Linux conferences around -
 although it is quite technical.

If you can't afford the time (or ticket price) you should try to make
it along to the openday - see
 http://linux.conf.au/programme/about_programme#OpenDay

I went to the above mentioned link and found this webpage:

http://keysigning.org/event/lca2009

quote from the website
---

This keysigning will use the
'Sassaman-Projectedhttp://keysigning.org/methods/sassaman-projected'
method, which is well suited to large groups.

*Getting Ready*

To participate in the LCA 2009 keysigning you will need to submit your
public key prior to *2009-01-16 16:00:00*. NB: that's according to the
system time of this server, which is currently 2009-01-07 01:20:30. It's *
not* relative to your local time.

The simplest way to do this is to export your public key in ascii-armored
format and email it to 'lca2009-k...@keysigning.org'. On a typical Linux
system you can do this by typing:

gpg --export-options export-minimal --export -a *KeyID* | mail -s
keysigning lca2009-k...@keysigning.org

where *KeyID* is actually your unique key ID, something like '64011A8B'.

After your key has been processed and added to the event keyring you will
receive an email confirmation.

Further instructions will be posted here closer to the event.

*Keys accepted into the event keyring:* check this
listhttp://keysigning.org/keylist/lca2009.txtto see if your key has
been added. The list is updated in real time.

Now please bear in mind that I'm still a Mint Ubuntu newbie... I'm using
Gnome Desktop 2.22.3.

I eventually worked out that I needed to do was select the menu:
Applications / System Tools / Terminal Program - Super

I am not sure about the Mint crew, but there will be people from
Australian Ubuntu community. There will also be other projects and
distros represented at the open day. It might be a good chance for you
to meet some more local Linux geeks.

Help!!! Music player Amarok has error about DCOP communications

2009-01-03 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Everyone,

Firstly, I'll like to wish everybody here a sincerely Happy New Year for
2009 and all Yuletide Seasons Greetings *BIG HAPPY SMILE!!!*

Okay.. here's my problem. I'm using Linux Mint Operating System I think
that its great!!! I also use Amarok music player and I have a lot of music
files which I've 'ripped' from my music cds which I own. I returned home
yesterday afternoon (3rd January 2009) from having a great holiday with my
mum dad in Victor Harbour, South Australia.

My dad has a new computer system and he uses M$ Windowz XP Professional OS.
He's having quite a few problems with it -- but I've tried to help him.
*SMILE*

Anyway... last night I switched on my computer and started Amarok (latest
version, I think). And I had my computer play music thru' my Dell brand 2 x
speakers and harmon/kardon sub-woofer (which I have from my old Dell
computer I purchased many years ago).

I was succesfully able to play music thru my speakers and subwoofer... while
I was in bed sleeping. It was very pleasant!!! :-)))

However, Amarok had some message about not being about to do something
because dcopserver was not there!?!?!?

Question: What Do I need to do on my computer to make Amarok work again?

This morning (Sunday, 4th Jan 2009) I rebooted my pc a few times... then I
rebooted into the recovery mode. And fixed some things. It seemed to improve
some things.

I then used the menu on the screen System / Administration / Synaptic
Package Manager and I think I found the correct files to install the
dcopserver and also some files for Amarok's libvisual thing! I then let
Synaptic Package Manager do it's thing... And it downloaded and installed
something! (I don't really understand what!)

Anyway I've switched off my pc and rebooted it etc.

Now when I try to start Amarok it does not start and I get a window with the
following error message:

Amarok Error Message

DCOP communications error (Amarok)

There was an error setting up inter-process communications for KDE. The
message returned by the system was:

Could not open network socket

Please check that the dcopsever program is running!

[OK] button

nb - I will happily provide extra 'system specs' or details if requested...
but I'll admit that I don't really understand what type of computer it is. I
know that it is quite new and I really like my pc... but I don't really
understand what processor speed or whatever it has!!! :-)

It's rate myself as still a beginner at learning and using Linux Ubuntu Mint
OS -- even thro' I've been using Linux Mint since sometime last year.

also... I don't like using the 'terminal' console command ... because it's
new and I don't really understand how it works. *SMILE* I'll use the
terminal command line when I need to... but I don't really like it :-)

Hello Ubuntu people :-)))

I'm forwarding (below) a message I sent to the Australian Ubuntu e-mail list

(I have seen some messages on the Linux Mint forum about people having the

If someone knows how I could fix this problem; would you please be kind

I am a little concerned about stuffing up my computer and not making it work

SOLVED !!! Re: Help!!! Music player Amarok has error about DCOP communications

2009-01-03 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Fellow Ubuntu Folk :-)))

Just a quickie to say... I've fixed my problems with Amarok music player
also some other problems too.

### Problem SOLVED !!! ###

I ended up doing lots of things... I'm not exactly sure which thing I did
actually worked !!! *SMILE*

One thing I did was to reboot to a Gnome terminal shell (not sure if that's
exactly the correct term). And I used the command (which I found one a
Ubuntu help website)

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restartsudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

Then I discovered that the repositories were wrong!!! The were pointing to
Ubuntu repositories instead of Ubuntu Mint (Elyssa) ones. I used the Package
Manager to change them to Mint one's. Actually I managed get them all wrong!
E.g I had Mint 8 Repositories in the Package Manager... but they were not
correct.

SO ... I reboots and chose the Mint Recovery mode. And I then chose all 3
options for fixing problems!!! One of the boot up recovery options was to
fix the broken repositories... and I did that.

To my great happiness (poor wording, I know!!!) - my Ubuntu Mint (Elyssa) OS
is now working almost perfectly!!! *BIG SMILE HAPPY GRIN**!!!

So now Ubuntu Amarok seems to work fine!

Yours with Love,

OpenOffice.org 2.4 (main program) crashes to show Document Recovery window.

2008-12-13 Thread Peter Williams
Hi All,

I'm using OpenOffice.org 2.4 and if I use the (Gnome menu) Applications /
Office / OpenOffice.org (menu item) to launch OO then the OO main program
will open to allow me to pick which part of it I want to use e.g. Database,
Presentation, Spreadsheet or Word Processor etc ... it then crashes with a
Document Recovery window, as follows:

OpenOffice 2.4 (window title)
OpenOffice.org Document Recovery

Due to an unexpected error, OpenOffice.org crashed. All the files you were
working on will now be saved. The next time OpenOffice.org is launched, your
files will be recovered automatically.

The following files will be recovered:
{no files listed}

[ OK ] button.

OO (the main program) seem to crash like this regardless of what task I
pick. Note also that chosing the individual programs in the OO suite does
not result in a crash e.g. I can individually pick Database, Impress,
Spreadsheet or Word Processor from the Applications / Office Menu and they
work fine.

I have tried reinstalling OO but the crashes of OO main program still occur.

I'm using Ubuntu Linux Mint version. I can provide other specs of my
system as requested.

I'd appreciate suggestions of help.

user name 'user'.

I have since reinstalled Linux... actually a new installation of Linux
Ubuntu Mint. Now I want to uncompress the archive to my new home folder with
my new user name of 'peter' what are the commands I need to do to
achieve this?!?

note that the archive contains:

user_backup_20080918.tgz (19.4 GB filesize)
 + user (folder)
+ many folder and sub-folders here, as well as hidden files with
leading dots in their filenames.

eg. would need to uncompress folders inside 'user' folder (old user name) to
current 'peter' user (home) folder.

I'm guessing that I'd need to use the chown (change owner) command -- but I
don't know how it works... I think I'd need to run it recursively on
sub-folders... correct?!? How do I do this?

   PEW ;-)))

How to load korganizer at boot up?!?

2008-08-15 Thread Peter Williams
Hi All,

I've been running Linux Ubuntu all years, and then some. However, I've only
been running Kubuntu for a few months. Basically, the more I use it, the
more I like it. ;-))

My question is this:

How do I make korganizer load each time I boot up my Kubuntu system?!? I did
it once, but now it doesn't load automatically - and thats what I want it
do.

Sorry to ask such a newbie question, but I search some discussion forums and
could not find out how to do this. I think that part of the problem (for me
anyway), is that there is too much info to look thru'. Information
overload!!!

Best Regards,
PEW

KControl crashes when screen saver option is selected.

2008-08-11 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Kubuntu Users,

I have a bug which is simple to reproduce (for me). If I press Alt+F2 then
enter 'kcontrol' and press enter, kcontrol opens. Then if I click on the
screen saver section it crashes. See attached file ( .kcrash file).

I have tried re-installing kconsole and also the screen savers. I get the
same error.

Earlier today my pc lost power and when the power came back on I noticed
that there are some icons on the desktop which I deleted -- but when I click
on them (to open) the Linux complains that the files don't exist !?! Could
this error be related to my kcontrol crash?!?

I'm still just a newbie and I'd really appreciate any help!!!

Menu Editor for the Application Launcher Menu (widget)

2008-08-08 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Linux Ubuntu folk,

I had been active on the ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com email list --
however, I'm not getting an answer to this issue on there... so I
decided to ask on the Ubuntulinux Yahoo! Group.

2008/8/8 ishwor [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

 1) Go to console (ALT+F2 and type xterm)
 2) Type kmenuedit and press enter.

Okay... that works, and I can edit my submenus and menu items. But
only one at a time. And I don't see how to sort them (e.g. it would be
nice to have my submenus and menu items appear alphabetically).

Quoted from my message (below):

I now have 2 questions:

1) How can I make all of my menus and submenus and menu items be
SORTED -- instead of not sorted (which is what they currently are).

2) When I edited the submenus and menu items, I selected each item one
at a time. Is there a way that I can select multiple menu items (e.g.
like holding the control key or using the shift key -- to select more
than just one menu item)

Fond Regards and Best Wishes,

Is there a Kubuntu equivalent for Corel Draw 7 Select Edition?

2008-08-07 Thread Peter Williams
Hi All,

I have a copy of a fairly old Corel Draw 7 Select Edition and I
installed it today. Unfortunately, even tho' it does run with WINE --
it is not a very happy program. I think that its probably TOO OLD!!!
E.g. It locks up several times.

As the subject of this email suggests, I'm looking for a Linux Kubuntu
equivalent of it. In particular, I really used to love the Corel Trace
program [ it converts raster images into vector drawings... very
clever!!! ]

I'd really appreciate any suggestions on Kubuntu software I should try. *SMILE*

I need a Menu Editor for the Application Launcher Menu (widget)

2008-08-01 Thread Peter Williams
Hi All,

I posted a message about this before but I think it got lost / overlooked.

I use Linux Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4.0. On my desktop I have added a 'widget'
called Application Launcher Menu (Traditional menu based application
launcher).

What I now need to do is edit and re-arrange the menu folders and menu
items. So, I figure I need a Menu Editor for the ALM. When I used Gnome I
used the Ala Carte Menu Editor and found it to be quite good. Is there
something similar for KDE 4.0 and the ALM ?!?

Wrong folder when trying to Rebuild Index of KDE Help Center

When I use the KDE Help Center I have discovered that I need to Rebuild the

I need to know exactly what is the correct folder for the KDE Help Center to

Also, I don't know how to search the HDD for files/folders. The Search

To make a new TrueType font available in Ubuntu, just copy the ttf
file into a '.fonts' directory in your home directory. It them becomes
available to you in Inkscape, OpenOffice and (I assume) other Gnome

Need to edit the Application Menu Launcher's menus -- how do I do it.

2008-07-29 Thread Peter Williams
Hi All,

I am now using Kubuntu and I'm generally very happy with it. Previously I

The reason that I need to know is that there are a lot of menu item under
Lost and Found menu and I want to move them to a more logical menu.

Also, I recently installed Windows Applications - WINE Emulator (I think
thats what it's called) -- but I don't see a menu item anywhere for it. How
do I install a Application Menu Launcher menu for it? e.g I would like to
make a menu folder for WINE.

khelpcenter has dependencies and I think they are not being met
 automatically when you install

on the command line you can do apt-cache show khelpcenter and you will get

you may have to install kde desktop to be able to use it

Re: How can I edit the text of a PDF file without having the source file of it?

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Williams
Hello Sridhar and All Australian Ubuntu Users,

I visited the [2] site you mention below, eg:

[2] Open source, java: http://www.pdfsam.org/?page_id=10

And it _sounds_like_ a good idea. However, when I went to download the
executable version, I could only see a M$ Windows installable version and I
think also there was a Macintosh version there too. I downloaded the M$
Windows version and it appears to have run and installed correctly using
WINE. However, when I use the WINE menu to run the program nothing seems to
happen.

I also downloaded the java source code for the above program. Unfortunately,
even though the source file *appear* to be included, I don't know how to
compile it, and there seems to be no instructions included with the source
files.

This is rapidly seeming to be one job that will go into my too hard
basket. *SMILE*

Someone mentioned that OpenOffice.org 3.0 *should* be able to edit PDF
files. I'm thinking that maybe my best option will be for me to wait for OO
3 to be released and try it.

Thank you for the info and efforts you have made to try to help me with this
problem. *SMILE*

PDF is primarily an export format - it was never designed to be edited.
However, there are some tools out there which can do it - pdfedit and the
 soon-to-be-released OpenOffice.org 3.0 spring to mind.

It is possible to treat a PDF like a canvas and draw a white box with new
text over the old text. This is usually done programmatically and can take a
 lot of fiddling.

It would also be possible to splice the original PDF with a new page
replacing the one with the old url. This is probably the easiest approach.
PDF::Reuse [1] will do this for you in perl but its API is reasonably
complicated, there may also be GUI tools for this including PDF Split and
Merge [2]. Extract pages 1 to 4 and 6 to 16. Create a new page 5, merge back

Re: How can I edit the text of a PDF file without having the source file of it?

2008-06-28 Thread Peter Williams
Hi Sridhar and fellow Australian Ubuntu users,

Firstly, Sridhar, I'd like to thank you for your supportive and informative
emails and giving me good advice on what to try.

The Good News is that I *found the source file* -- it was a Micro$oft Word
format document which I had authored in Sept 2005 (which I knew from the
document's filename), and it was saved on my system without me realizing
that it was saved. I examined the properties of the PDF file I had and that
told me the title of my M$ Word document. A quick search and it was found...
lurking in a sub-directory of my Home directory.

The main work remaining for my document was to replace the crappy M$ Windows
Fonts with Linux Ubuntu fonts -- which is easy compared to the PDF
extracting dramas which I was thinking I'd need to do, if I did not find the
original document.

Thank you again for all your help!

Fond Regards,
PEW

You can try it now if you like:

 http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/pdf_import_first_milestone_reached?intcmp=1549

You'll need to get the OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta for that extension to work.
Keep in mind that it's all still a work in progress, so it won't be smooth
 as
 silk yet.

 More info at

PDF importing is far from easy, since the format was never designed for it.
The general way to do things is to use the OpenDocument formats for
 editing,
 and PDF for exporting.

 The approach I'd take is:

 1. import your PDF
 2. save as an OpenDocument format and edit there
 3. when you're done, export to PDF
 4. keep the OpenDocument version around for editing in the future

How can I edit the text of a PDF file without having the source file of it?

2008-06-20 Thread Peter Williams
Hello Ubuntu-Australia ppl,

{ I apologize for waffling on (below) however I figured that I was best for
me to supply too much info rather than not enough. }

I have a PDF file (eg an Adobe Portable Document Format) file which I
authored quite a long time ago... back when I was using M$ Windows XP Home
Edition as my Operating System. I now wish to edit the PDF file, however I
don't know where the source document is, or whether I even HAVE the source
file. From memory, the file was written using Micro$oft Word, and probably
printed with PDF995 (M$ Windows print driver which creates PDF documents). [
eg PDF995 is available from the website www.pdf995.com ]

The file is called piffle_forever.pdf and is 16 A4 pages in length and
also contains embedded colour images. I want to keep all of the formatting
and images etc. However what I do want to do is change the text of a URL on
page 5 of the book, to reflect that the Piffle Page Url is different to
that currently in the document.

I attempted to open the pdf file with Scribus 1.3.3.11 however I get the
following error message:

FATAL ERROR
The /home/user/Desktop/piffle_forever.pdf is not in an acceptable format.
[OK] { button }

The Fatal Error message appears to be a Scribus error message and not a
Ubuntu error.

If you ( anyone ) would like to try to change this PDF or attempt to edit
it, I will tell you where you can download is from:

Some of the text on page 5 of the document is as follows:

Piffle the Cat first published in Dreaming of Dreaming,
   by Peter E. Williams, 1999.
The Piffle webpage is http://members.fortunecity.com/pew/piffle.html

e.g I want the last line (above) to read:

The Piffle webpage is http://pewtas.googlepages.com/thepifflepage

I you go to http://pewtas.googlepages.com/thepifflepage and go to the bottom
of the page, you will see a HTML table with 2 columns. In the left-hand
column is the URL for the document:
piffle_forever.pdf http://pewtas.googlepages.com/piffle_forever.pdf ---
this is the PDF document which I am referring to.
Download the *PIFFLE FOREVER* Book in PDF format (Adobe Portable Document
Format).and in the right-hand column is the File Size: 830 Kilobytes

---

To summarize, can someone please help me to change the text in my PDF
document. Note that I have the PDF file but not the source M$ Word file used
to create it. Also, I no longer use M$ Windows XP Home Editon OS... My
system is purely Hardy Heron OS.

I look forward to replies.

Am I doing something wrong or is the http://au.archive.ubuntu.com missing
some critical files needed for the upgrade???

Good News - HP Printer / Scanner / Copier works perfectly AMAROK works too.

2008-02-06 Thread Peter Williams
G'day to the Australian UBUNTU e-list,

Great news. Yesterday I purchased a new HP Photosmart C4280 Printer,
Scanner, Copier for $90.00 from Dick Smith. I am using Linux UBUNTU
'Gutsy Gibbon' -- and when I booted up the computer and switched on
the printer, I went to the menu System / Admin / Printing I was
surprised to find that Ubuntu had autodetected and installed the
correct printer driver for the HP 4200 Series. I printed a test page
and it worked perfectly!!! I then tested the scanner with menu
Applications / Graphics / Xsane Image Scanner -- and I scanned a
postcard sized photo perfectly. Actually the photo was scanned with
extra white space around the image... it needs to be cropped (from A4
size to postcard size).

Can anyone please point me to an online or downloadable The GIMP
tutorial ?!? Please paste URL for a tutorial if you know of one.

Also... on a different topic. Some of you may recall that I posted a
message that AMAROK was not playing Shoutcast internet radio
streams... well when I attempted to play an MP3 file AMAROK produced
an error message to the effect MP3 not supported, do you want to
install component to play MP3. I clicked okay to install files for MP3
playing -- Synaptic Package Manager opened and prompted me for my
password the downloaded and installed something. Now MP3's *do* play
in AMAROK and so also does now play Shoutcast internet radio streams.
Whatever got install for MP3 was also what was missing for playing
Shoutcast streams.

I just wanted to share my good news!!!

2008-02-03 Thread Peter Williams
Dear Andre, Leslie and All,

cc: my Dad Mum

Thank you, Leslie for recommending the HP All-in-1 printer / scanner. Also,
thank you Andre for finding the best price to buy it.

I have forwarded this information to the person who manages my financial
affairs, eg The Public Trustee of Tasmania. Hopefully I will purchase one of
these HP All-in-1's in the near future. *SMILE*

Ok short a simple answer. I have a HP Photosmart C3180 all in one
Printer/Scanner/Copier. Cost me $79 a while back and works out of the
box. Very well too. must say was a major improvement on my old Cannon.
Not sure if the still sell them though as its almost a year old now. HP
seems to put a lot of effort into Linux printing drivers. Oh and the
  scanner works great too.
  Good Luck
  Leslie

The HP Photosmart C3180 model is still available. The best price I could
find for you, Peter, is $58.95 plus $18.00 delivery to your door making the
total cost $76.95. The item is currently not in stock so it would have to
 be ordered.

 Here is the address:

 Andre

[Bug 54474] [EDGY]On applying manual partition changes at installation, confirmation dialog appears behind main window.

2006-07-29 Thread Peter Williams
Public bug reported:

To Reproduce
Boot knot 1 cd, begin installation proces using icon on desktop.
At partitioning stage choose choose to manually partition.
 Make some chages and apply.

Result
Confirmation dialog appears behind main window. In this way it appears the
partitioning program has locked-up, and the confirmation dialog is only found
by moving the main window out of the way.

Expected behaviour
Confirmation dialog to appear in front of main window.

** Affects: Ubuntu
