[libreoffice-users] Question about testing changes made to MS Word documents
How-dee! I have a question about testing changes made to MS Word documents. Someone sent me a Word DOCX file that needed to be updated and I managed to update it in LibreOffice Writer 7.1.5.2 on Ubuntu 21.04 Linux. I wanted to test the saved file by loading it in MS Word. Since I don't have access to MS Office, I uploaded it to Word online using my Hotmail account. The document loaded but when I went to print it, the generated PDF was pretty much trashed. So, what's a good/reliable way to test changes saved in DOCX format in Writer? Is using Word online, as I did, akin to loading it in MS Word 2016? I believe the document was last edited in MS Word 2016 before it was sent to me. Thanks in advance! Peace... [libreoffice-users] Advice needed on reporting a bug
Hi! I have a Word document that I downloaded from an online Sharepoint site that appears mis-formatted in LibreOffice Writer 6.2.7.1 on Ubuntu 19.04 Linux. It appears as if the page breaks are off. In any event, the document is a legal document so I'm not willing to post the document "as is" in a bug report, if I end up filing one. What would be a good alternative to preserve the information that shows the formatting issues but not include the other legal information, in the document? Thanks in advance! Peace... After doing some experimentation with Excel today, I found it just doesn't want to "play nice" with what I'm trying to do. I want to have an image as the spreadsheet header and have the basic formulas update when I add/remove rows. I'm sure with enough time, I could get Excel to behave but I've been able to get what I needed working far more easily with Calc. I haven't given up, just yet, but I'm really surprised at how stubborn Excel is, when it comes to the things I'm trying to do with it. :( Peace... I know it's odd to ask for Excel help in this mailing list but I need help locating a LibreOffice Calc function/feature in Excel. :) I'm helping a friend create a billing invoice and since I'm a Linux user, I'm using Calc to build the template. So far, it's working well and given I'm not an Excel user, I find myself struggling some in getting Excel to "behave". Anyway, I recently discovered the "/Expand reference when new rows are inserted/" in Calc. It does exactly what I needed. When I add/remove a row in/from the spreadsheet, my total "SUM()" formula is updated automagically. Does the equivalent feature exist in Excel? What I've found is, when adding rows *after* the last row in my SUM() formula, the new row is excluded from the SUM() formula. So, my formula is "=SUM(D7:D27)". Once I add row 28, I need the SUM() formula to be updated to "=SUM(D7:D28)". Conversely, when row 28 is removed, I want the SUM() formula to be updated to "=SUM(D7:D27". In Calc, the "/Expand reference when new rows are inserted/" feature does this work for me. LO Writer treated the entire document as either portrait or landscape but couldn't handle the mixture of both. It's worth saying that you are mixing your ideas here. This experience is not about LibreOffice's facility at creating or editing (text) documents with mixed page orientations, but about how it can handle whatever Microsoft Word puts in its proprietary file formats to encode similar structures. That may well matter to you, but it has little to do with how good LibreOffice may be at achieving this particular structure. Yes, the example I cited doesn't reflect on Writer's ability to create or edit documents with mixed page orientations but the behavior I experienced could be easily viewed as Writer not being able to handle some kinds of MS Word documents. This isn't my personal view but a view I've experienced from those I've helped in using Writer. You surely cannot believe that it is at all difficult to create and edit text documents with mixed page orientations in LibreOffice? I haven't personally created a document like this but I wouldn't have thought it would be difficult to do. I would have simply looked up how to do it and do it. :) Peace... Where is the MS Office tile? Off to the far right somewhere, requiring you to scroll to see it. I'm on a *desktop* system and using a Word processor is something I'm probably going to want to do so why not put the tile for MS Office in the same set of tiles where you can EASILY access the online stuff? Stupid strike #1. When I'm on the desktop side, I can double-click a photo to see it. If I'm not careful, I can get flipped to the Metro side and view the photo. Cool. When I'm done looking at the photo, I have no clue what to do because the X to close the window isn't in view (I have to know to move the mouse to the top of the screen to get it to appear). Stupid strike #2 (the flip from the desktop to Metro). Now, these aren't things I've personally struggled with but things I've personally witnessed many others struggle with as they get new computers I setup for them. To be fair, I have no issue with Windows 8's underpinnings and security changes. It's mostly the UI behavior I have issue with. Of course, if one wants to take the time to learn how to use Windows 8 effectively and efficiently, more power to them. I would also state, if they could take the time to learn how to use Windows 8, they could (and should) take the time to learn how to use LibreOffice effectively and efficiently instead of slamming it for not looking or behaving exactly like MS Office. :) Peace... I've found a number of people simply expect _any_ computer to look, act,
and feel like Windows. I installed LibreOffice on the computer of a
client of mine because MS Office Starter Edition kept acting funny when
he would try to open MS Office documents attached to email messages.
One day, we were talking about his using Excel vs Calc to update a
spreadsheet. He insisted he couldn't use Calc because it didn't do what
Excel did. I asked him to show me the things he could do in Excel but
couldn't do in Calc and we both discovered he actually _could_ do all of
the things he needed to do in Calc but the way he needed to do those
things were a little different. In another case, I showed an IT guy I
used to work with an Ubuntu system. He wanted to run an application and
went straight to the lower left corner of the screen, looking for the
Start menu.
The more people learn Windows, especially as their first computing
interface, the more they tend to think all computers behave that way.
Of course, this isn't an absolute statement. :)
Something else I've found is non-Linux users tend to expect a higher
standard of performance from Linux for it to even be considered a
viable option. For example, if Linux can't support {fill in the
blank} perfectly, Linux isn't ready for prime time. Let's forget the
fact that Windows might have issues supporting {fill in the blank} as
well. lol
This thread could not have come at a better time since I recently read
the TechRepublic article and another article about Linux being an
alternative to Windows. In the other article, I was floored by various
comments made by others who had read that article. Comments about how
Linux is good for basic things and not good for productivity. So,
if you want to just read email and surf mainstream websites, Linux is
great. If you want to do real work, you need Windows for that. I
had to laugh since I find myself doing real and productive work on
Linux on a daily basis, and without using the command line unless I want
to use ImageMagick to process some images in batch.
I've switched my mom to Linux and while she's not doing anything
sophisticated, I've noticed her computer question volume has decreased
significantly. Her computer usage hasn't changed much from when she
used Windows XP except I think she's actually listening to more music on
her computer now, while reading email and surfing the web.

[libreoffice-users] Question about font replacement/substitution in Writer 4.3.3
Hi! I'm running LibreOffice Writer 4.3.3.2 on Ubuntu 14.10 Linux (64-bit). I'm helping someone convert a MS Word document info a PDF form. I'm creating the form as a native ODT document, which I will save as a PDF form. The original MS Word document uses the Calibri font everywhere. I don't have Calibri installed, yet the text is displayed anyway. My question: how I can find out which font is being used as a substitute for Calibri? I know about the Font Replacement Table, where I can specify which fonts to use as replacements or substitutes. You were 100% correct about an image covering the cells. Apparently, my dad used a copy/paste function to update the spreadsheet and pasted data as a bitmap. To hide individual cells it might be easier to grab a graphic, drag it onto the spreadsheet, perhaps right-click again to Anchor to - page and resize to fit the cell(s). It's also probably possible to put a frame over the cells and then have writing or number in the frame although it might be difficult to then reach those numbers in calculations in the rest of the spreadsheet because they wont be recognised as being in a cell. Hi! I'm using LibreOffice 4.2.4.2 on Ubuntu 14.04 Linux (64-bit) and I created an OpenDocument with a table that has a few cells with formulas. The formulas are simple in nature (basic math) but I would like to see the formula of any given cell at any given time. I've found if I hover the mouse over a cell in the last row of the table, the formula appears as a tool-tip. However, if I hover over another cell in a row in the middle of the table, the formula doesn't appear. Is there a way I can see the formula in any given cell in a table in Writer? Thanks in advance! Hi! I'm converting a Word document into a form that will eventually be a PDF form that can be filled in using Adobe Reader. I'm doing this in LibreOffice Writer 4.2.3.3 on Ubuntu Linux 14.04. My first pass worked splendidly well and everything worked fine except for two issues: 1. I can't seem to control the font used in the form controls, namely the text boxes 2. I can't get the text boxes to align text at the top (despite my setting the form control to align text at the top) Does anyone reading this list have much experience with creating forms in Writer? With regard to issue #2, when I enter text into a text box, it's vertically centered vs being aligned along the top of the text box. This is when I view the generated PDF file in Ubuntu's PDF document viewer, the text I typed wasn't aligned at the top of the text box. I'm not sure if this is an Ubuntu document view issue or an issue with the generated PDF file. I'll test in Adobe Reader later. Err, when you say converting a Word document into a form - for most things it is often better to start off with a fresh document in ODF format when you find yourself struggling with odd weirdnesses. Documents that were previously in some other format, particularly MS formats (especially the various versions of DocX or Rtf), often have tons of hidden coding stuffing things up. A fresh start often helps. ODF is the better format for stability between different versions of software. Thanks for mentioning this. Well you're right, it is about finding new bugs (or previously fixed bugs that may reappear) in the development versions. Actually, old or open bugs get fixed at every new release, while others get (unfortunately) introduced. That's the factor you were asking about I guess? Not really. I was asking how current backlog bug reports factor in with these bug hunts. As bugs are fixed in each new release, those bug reports are eventually resolved and maybe even closed. They might be reopened if a regression occurs, but that's something different. I do understand the need to find out if new features and functionality either have problems, themselves, or possibly caused regressions but a regression is a break of something that previously worked. A bug report that's still in New status, like my sample bug, hasn't been fixed and my question is: during these bug hunts, is there any effort put into seeing if any of the backlog bug reports have also been fixed or is the intent mostly to focus on the new stuff, making sure new features and functions work properly and to see if any regressions have been introduced. This version is obsolete; but someone actually tested the problematic behaviour with a 4.2.0 and the bug was no longer observed: So even it is not informed here, it is solved for the releases in production. So it was fixed somehow. Please keep in mind that bug fixes are only brought to actively supported versions (the ones you can download from the website), not obsolete ones like the 3.6.x branch. Yep, release 3.6.2 is certainly obsolete but that's the version of the software in which I first experienced the problem. I certainly hope bug reports filed against *now* obsolete releases aren't being ignored. As for the status of my sample bug report being changed to invalid, I'm addressing that now since I experienced the same problem with Writer 4.2.3 on Windows XP. :) I'm excited about LibreOffice 4.3's release because the software keeps getting better and better. However, it's also a bit frustrating when reported issues exist for a long period of time. I hope I have answered your question;of course there are always unresolved issues that are still in the actively supported versions. [libreoffice-users] Question about LibreOffice Calc 4.2.1 and MS Excel workbook
Hi! A friend of mine has LibreOffice 4.2.1 installed alongside MS Office 2010 Starter Edition on his Windows 7 system. He received an Excel spreadsheet via email which he can open just fine in both Excel and Calc. The problem is when he opens the file in Calc, it opens with the page zoom set to 60%. When he opens the file in Excel, it opens with page zoom set to 100%. Because of this, he didn't think he could edit the file in Calc since he couldn't read the info. He wasn't aware of the page zoom capability of either application. :) Any ideas as to why Calc would open the spreadsheet with a page zoom of 60%? Thanks in advance! Peace... [libreoffice-users] Question about Calc and user-defined number formats
So, I installed LibreOffice 4.2.0 on a Windows 7 system today and was showing the system owner how to use it. I created a new spreadsheet and added two columns and four rows, the last row being a total row that would show the sum of the previous rows. The first row I added was column headings. The second row I added had text in the first cell and the number 50 in the second cell. The third row I added had text in the first cell and the number 40 in the second cell. The fourth row was blank. The fifth row was the total row. Cool. So, I selected cells B2..B5 and used the Format/Cells function to change the format to a currency format. I chose the -$1,234.00 in red format. The numbers in column B were changed accordingly. Then, my friend wanted only the first cell with a number to have a dollar sign and the numbers below it to NOT have a dollar sign. So, I selected cells B3..B5 and used the Format/Cells function to change the format. When the Format Cells window appeared, the Currency number format was selected, as expected. I went to the Format code box and simply removed the $$ references, leaving the rest of the format code intact. The Category immediately changed to User Defined, which is fine. Here's the problem: after the category changes to User Defined, the modified format code, which is still displayed, doesn't apply to the selected cells and I can't find any way to save the modified currency format as a user defined format I can reuse. I tried changing the comment of User-defined to something else, thinking that might be used as a category name or something. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance! Peace... Nothing happens until you confirm by clicking OK, of course. But if you mean that the format didn't change even after you clicked OK, then the obvious first possibility is that you had made an error in modifying the string in the Format code box and had created something that was not a valid format code. In this case, the format of the selected cells would not change and no new format example would be created in the User-defined category. (You can test this by experiment.) Thanks for posting this. Duh :) Since no message of any kind was issued telling me the modified format might be invalid, it didn't occur to me that I was breaking the format code. I'll experiment with this. Thanks! Peace... I installed LibreOffice 4.1.3 and it mostly works but she's not able to do some of the things she used to do with MS Excel 2000. Primarily, she wants to be able to change the color of hyperlinks of email addresses. In MS Excel 2000, she could simply select the column of email addresses and change the color to black or any other color and the color of the links changes. In Calc, we select the column of email address and change the text color to black and the hyperlinks remain blue. I did some web searching and found I needed to edit the hyperlink style, but that appears to be only for cells that use the HYPERLINK formula (if that's what it's called) and not on cells that have email addresses listed that aren't using HYPERLINK syntax.
