Why bother to write the Acrobat software if PDF is not *designed* to be edited? Under your assumption a pseudo printer would be all that was necessary. PDF was never designed to be an editable format. From the ISO PDF abstract (yes, PDF is much older than this ISO document, but the definition of what a PDF is, is pretty much the same now as it was almost 20 years ago) http://www.iso.org/iso/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=51502 : ISO 32000-1:2008 specifies a digital form for representing electronic documents to enable users to exchange and view electronic documents independent of the environment in which they were created or the environment in which they are viewed or printed. PDF has always been about being able to exchange, view and print documents regardless of the original software used to _create_ the PDF. Yes you can edit PDFs directly using various applications such as Inkscape or Adobe Acrobat, but in reality, PDF is simply a delivery format that can be read and printed (unless printing is restricted) on any current OS. It is a delivery format that ensures that the end user can view the document if they do not have access to the original document and original software used to create the PDF. In effect PDF is a digital printout of a document. That's a decision taken by pretty much every Linux distribution... they maintain the application version that was contemporary with a particular release - it's basically a snapshot. This applies to OOo as well as most other applications. The snapshot is maintained with security updates etc, but unless you step outside the default repositories, you're not going to get newer versions. Best example, look at kernel releases... each Ubuntu release has a specific kernel version. You will not see that kernel bumped up to the next version unless you do it yourself. If you want the latest and greatest OOo in repository packaged form, add the OOo PPA repository: https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu/ I know that this type of question should be posted to an Ubuntu forum, which I have but with no answers in return, but here are the people who are most affected by that lack of updating, the OOo users running Ubuntu/Debian. You're right, it's not an OpenOffice.org issue. When OOo is released... you can get the latest packages on release day regardless of OS. I wonder if a large number of us Ubuntu/Debian users who use OOo as our main, or only, office package get together and ask real nicely, would something be done to solve the problem? You will have to change the underlying principle of the release strategy of Ubuntu or change to a Linux distribution that works on a rolling release principle like Gentoo. Several of the people who wrote the User Guide content are active there, and can either take the knowledge you do have and maybe correct the docs, or contribute to some combined effort to get it right or at least less confusing. From there, we can look at correcting or clarifying the application Help a little. There is a good chance that due to the high volume on this users list that info is simply lost in shuffle... I only read a few messages here and there myself, and I know most others do the same. Chattering on the authors mailing list about it will hit a much much smaller audience, the people who are actually working on the docs on a daily basis. That is a perfect statement of an attitude to which I fully subscribe: Let's fix it. The reason I have not tackled the wiki yet - either the Writer Guide or the FAQ - is that I still (after strenuous efforts) *don't know* how envelopes are supposed to work, or how to make sense of something that does not make coherent sense. I suspect that is what people have tried to do, and why the various info sources are incoherent on the subject. IOW, I suspect that the problem is less with the documentation than with the design - and that it may go beyond the Envelope page style to more basic issues of how styles are structured in Writer. That said, I just have not had time to do more, but am committed to do so. As NoOp said some time back, it will probably require digging into the sources - but without design specs, or some clarity about the design intent, that can be a huge and unrewarding job. Well, armed with the right questions, we can chase down the developers and maybe get some clarification. It won't be an instant solution, but it can be added to the list of things to fix in the docs. We've got people on the Doc team willing to jump in there and fix things if they know what needs to be worked on. This would be a great project for someone. It would be nice to see converters go directly to ODF formats instead of MS ones, since ODF is the International default, while MS is just a want-to-be. In a sense, what you're wishing for already exists. http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/pdfimport is not just for importing PDF into Draw fro minor editing. This extension also adds in the Hybrid PDF functionality. A hybrid PDF/ODF file is a PDF file that contains an embedded ODF source file. Hybrid PDF/ODF files will be opened in OpenOffice.org as an ODF file without any layout changes. Johnny Rosenberg wrote: As a non English speaking person that's very interesting. In Swedish there has never been an extra space required and I started to learn English at school in 1975, and nobody ever mentioned an extra space. So exactly when did this change from being required to NOT being required? On the other hand, in 1975 we didn't use computers at school so maybe that's why they didn't mention anything about spaces… The two spaces after a full stop thing links way back to the days of typewriters, and a need for an em-dash sized space after the full stop. It wasn't actually a requirement of the English language... just a standard used by typists (using typewriters that used monospaced fonts), that was influenced by traditional typesetting standards and norms from the 19th century. And I am curious about another thing as well: I have noticed that many people writing in English adds an extra space right before a ”!” and a ”?”, which is very ugly and at least in Swedish very wrong. Has that been required too in the past? This also links back to the days of typewriters, and something called French spacing which for reasons only truly known by people at the time, inserted extra single spaces before and after punctuation marks. Depending on who you consult on it, the gradual change to single space after a full stop started anytime from the 1950s to the 1990s. The real trend is most noticeable with the more common use of variable width fonts and computers with office and DTP apps. Anyone who took traditional typing classes in school, using real typewriters (like me) were likely taught to double-space after a full stop. The habit stuck, and I still do it even in my emails :-) C. -- Clayton Cornell ccorn...@openoffice.org OpenOffice.org Documentation Project co-lead Sun Microsystems, Hamburg, Germany - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org

If the text already entered belongs to various sections (as it does currently), OOo doesn't allow me to apply a different page style to a few pages: the moment I change it somewhere, it changes throughout the document. So, all in all I still am lost as regards sections. And I am not even sure if I can't get it, or if Sections in OOo are still somewhat primitive, or at least peculiar in their concept. I've forwarded your comments to the d...@documentation mailing list... maybe your comments can be used to improve the documentation around sections. :-) I don't have a direct answer for you on the sections thing... hopefully another user here may be able to help. Gordon wrote: Here's an interesting thing. I was sent a Microsoft Works Document today. Open Office 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 will open it instantly on double-clicking on it, although the graphics in it had to be re-done. Open Office 3.1 on WINDOWS however was a different story. All that happened is that the Filter window appeared, upon which (unless I missed it) Microsoft Works does NOT appear and so it seems that the Windows version of OO 3.1 won't open wps documents whereas it seems that the Linux version will! The simple answer to that is that most Linux distributions base their OOo version on the GoOO builds from Novel instead of the official version direct from the OO.o website. The GoOO builds include functionality/extras that are not (yet) included (for various reasons) in the main OOo build. The Windows version of OOo you are using is from the OO.o website... so it does not include the MSWorks filter. [users] Rich Text editor added to the OOoWiki
NOTE: Cross-posted to website, user, api, and documentation mailing lists. =-=-=-=-=-=-= I finally figured out how to add the FCKeditor (a WYSIWYG rich text editor) to the OpenOffice.org wiki (it was held up by a long standing error in the pHp backend that I fixed this morning). The FCKeditor is *OFF* by default for all users (including new users). I set this by request from discussions we've had on this topic in the past. We can enable it by default for newly registered users if we want by changing an option in the Wiki preferences file... but for now it's disabled for everyone, and must be explicitly switched on if you want to use it. To enable the FCKeditor: 1. Log into the Wiki using your normal user ID. 2. Click the my preferences link at the top of the Wiki page. 3. Go to Misc. 4. Remove the check marks in the boxes next to the option Disable rich editor. 5. You can toggle other options related to the rich text editor depending on your preferences. 6. Click Save. This editor has many nice features beyond the basics for editing... for example adding Templates of Categories - you can pick them from a drop down list. So... test it out. Let me know if there are any issues (please discuss on the d...@website.openoffice.org mailing list). Note: You can always toggle the editor off with the Disable rich editor link at the top of the page you're editing if there is something on the page that is causing problems in the editor. Re: [users] Re: Unscrupulous dealings - OOo imposters
I use a search engine called Icerocket. When I enter openoffice or open office I don't get the scam sites at all. Just legitimate Ooo sites or sites linking to them with no mention of payment. No sponsored links. Yet another reason not to use Google. I just tried a search in parallel for OOo in both icerocket (selecting the web search option) and google. The results page were identical line for line at least the first page was. I do like the look and feel and selective search filtering by options, whereas a google search can be overwhelming in that it includes everything. I didn't get the great results mentioned here with icerocket so did a little checking. It's actually a blog search engine; and will be changing its name soon too. Makes sense now, what it found. Hmmm I went to Icerocket and searched on openoffice (using the web search option) and got sponsored links in the results that linked directly to the vendors that have been discussed in this thread. In fact, yesterday I pointed out in this thread that this feature was essentially broken (for me, at least) because on my 60 page document, clicking Page Preview runs essentially forever, forcing me to kill the process (I've tried this several times). I missed that as the thread has branched several times :-) I just tested here on openSUSE 64 bit using 64 bit OOo, and page preview works as expected for a 70 page document, and also for a 950 page document I'm working on. Sounds like you're on the right track that something is broken on your end.. CUPS can be a pain... and possibly where the issue is... Re: [users] Re: Update from OpenOffice 3 to 3.0.1
please make in future incremental updates. It is no fun updating from 3 to 3.0.1 with a new istallation. It's such a mess. Hello, Which OS? What's the mess? Just replace one with the other automagically! Windows XP. As I heared from all of my friends I have to download the new version 135 MB to update. No incremental update as it seems. And why must OpenOffice extract all the files from the downloaded file? No other installer that I know does it. It is just nonsense. First let me say that the majority of people here are users rather than openoffice developers. Secondly when you consider that openoffice can work on Windows (XP and Vista) Apple Mac and Linux operating systems, then some variations between install packages seems to be part of the price you pay for multi-platform software. The extraction of files from the download file is simply to keep the download file as small as possible. Some users are on a dial-up connection and so large downloads are unacceptable. I hope that clears up the problem somewhat Rob If they would release only the files that had changed that would be nice for the dial-up connection people. A minor update with 135 MB installation file is ... StarOffice provides incremental updates. The Sun ODF Plugin for MS Office is here: http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/ C. Thanks, but I needed to clarify. The instruction to download wants you to use their download manager. My Vista wants to save a weird file format name instead of running the manager. You can look and see you can click on the file name and download it that way, but the people I deal with would call that too complex or get confused. Plus, they would rather download it themselves instead of me giving them a copy of it. 1. Go to the link above 2. Click the Get it tab 3. Click Download now 4. Read/check the software agreement 5. Click Continue 6. Click the link titled odp-1.2-bin-windows-en-US.exe The download manager is optional, and not a required part of the download. Can't speak for what Vista does. I haven't used Microsoft anything (not even Windows) for years. I would expect that it would save the executable as a normal executable C. -- Clayton Cornell ccorn...@openoffice.org StarOffice - Sun Microsystems, Inc. - Hamburg, Germany - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.org
Re: [users] Newbie!
What do multiple users do to call meetings, reserve rooms and resources, and have meetings inserted into each others' calendars? The boss would want to be able to forcibly insert meeting reservations/notifications into underling's calendars, while other folks would like to be able to provisionally insert them (if the time is currently unallocated in the other party's calendar). One of the handiest features of the Outlook calendar functions is that simply clicking Accept causes both a return acceptance to be sent, AND the block of time to be set aside in one's own calendar. As well, the Outlook shared calendar functions allow other people to see whether invitees are already booked for a given timeslot, so they can just quickly move a proposed meeting around their call-a-meeting calendar until they hit a timeslot where all the important participants are otherwise unbooked. In a busy company, negotiating meeting acceptances by return-e-mail responses can be extremely frustrating, since people tend to take hours to reply and meeting slots get rapidly booked. Thuderbird and Lightning can do almost all of this... I use Lightning all the time in my work environment. I can subscribe to individual calendars, team calendar etc. My manager can insert meetings into my calendar... I see proposed meetings and can one click accept or decline them etc etc. It all works quite nicely. C. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: [users] Re: How can I edit PDF
Try the one from my link: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DIYMarketing?action=AttachFiledo=gettarget=ubuntu_CD_804.pdf It only opens with the text. I suppose that it has something to do with how the pdf was created as other pdf's do open with the graphics intact. If you and Andrew can verify, I'll go ahead submit a bug report and use that file as the text case. My OOo is 3.0 M17 linux. I tested this on a couple of installs of 300m17 and the last build of the PDF import extension, and the graphics are not visible. They are there... if you poke around with the mouse you will be able to locate the various graphical elements and resize them and drag them around. When you do, you can see the outline of the shapes... If you select all, and then set the line type to Continuous (instead of invisible which is what it is set to for some reason) then you see the line art as expected - but without color fills. I would say definitely file a bug report, and include a link to the PDF that is failing. C. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
