Many years ago, I installed Star Office for OS/2. There is still a
relatively current OS/2 version available through Serenity Systems.
These days, I run LibreOffice on Linux, as that's what came with the

As long as you get it from www.openoffice.org, you can download it as
often as you wish. However, if you already have a copy, you can install
it on as many computers as you like. I keep a copy of it on a flash
drive, on my key ring, which I can use to install it other computers for
friends, work etc.

2011-06-22 Thread Dorothy Trinen
Hi, Rachelle--It's very rarely that I'm able to help anyone with
anything on this site, but am always getting very generous and
gracious help.
Perhaps I can be of use here, however, as when I purchased my i-mac a
year ago, It was limited to a text editor program. After tryi8ng
Apple's I-Works program which none of my volunteer org colleagues
could open, I was advised to download Open Office.org. That has done
the trick for me. It does have a spreadsheet, word processing, etc.
components.

When I send to my colleagues with Word, I save my Open Office document
file (".odt") to my own file, and also perform a "Save As" (under the
"File" Menu) of Open Office, and give it a ".doc" file extension.
Then I can attach that Open Office .doc file to the e-mail and they
read it just fine. It does give you several different Microsoft Word
versions to pick from, but I usually just pick MSWord 97/2000 and that
seems to work for everyone.

I do hope this helps you. If not, Open Office.org also has a support
program on their website, as well as a User Forum Group.

I have found Open Office a much better program for me than a costly
Microsoft platform for Apple.

Good Luck.

They can't open it because they do not have Pages. To send in a format they can read do the
following.

In Pages go to File/Export and choose PDF if the document does not need to be edited by
recipient, or Word if they need to edit it.

Send either the PDF or Word document in your email.

While this is not really the Open Office answer, you can export a Pages

OOo can certainly create text documents as "normal" Word documents. Saving
as Word documents is not the default setting though. After installation, to
make the default document format = Word, the following must be done
- open the Writer program
- select the Tools menu
- select Options... from the menu
- expand the Load/Save options list
- select the General options
- at the bottom right of the dialog ensure "Document Type" reads "Text
document"
- open the "Always save as" list and select the Word file format you wish
your files to be saved as (there are several options)

Did you miss where I said it *keeps *changing** the location?

I know where to define it, I just want it to not ever *change* it.

Kind of like how the Thunderbird 3 update changed all of my carefully

Pardon me for intruding Larry, But as a gmane user I've noticed that at
the bottom of each message in gmane.comp.openoffice.questions, there
is a list management info link that alpine displays as:

=> [ Note: This message contains email list management information ]

inside of which this link:

=> * A method to send a message to the entire list (Post).
=>
=> Select HERE to post a message.

leads alpine to display this confirmation message.

Since this mailing list accepts mail from non-subscribers, a mouse
centric gmane user might well click his way to bypassing the gmane
posting method.

I know I've seen a lot of effort being put into advising people that
someone isn't subscribed... In fact I seem to remember that my first
posting caused some confusion. I would suggest that when an
unsubscribed person is only answered in the list, and the OP doesn't
follow up with "however they discovered the list in the first place"
it's "their bad"... The "in" list reply is being archived and someone
else with a similar issue may benefit from it.

But instead of using so much precious effort from those like
yourself trying to compensate for well meaning members who don't
notice when to Cc: the OP directly, perhaps a generic automatic
reply might be sent to all unsubscribed posts that advises them that
they do not appear subscribed to the list. That as a courtesy their
message was posted anyway but that some replies might only be posted
to the list and that they should therefore either subscribe or monitor
the list via a mirror such as gmane, that if they're tired of recieving
this message every time they post they should either post from an email
account that is subscribed to the list itself. or use gmane's usenet
posting method...

It's just an idea. But I'd hate to see such a kind hearted helpful soul
such as yourself reach burnout from the seemingly endless task of all
these manual intervention discussions...

But is is *highly* unlikely that they know that. It is equally unlikely that
they have any realistic way of finding that out. The reason they are not
subscribed is that they are newbies. They are not computer geeks like you

A good firewall will ask for permission if it is confronted with a file it
doesn't recognise. Unfortunately not all firewalls are good ones, and
sometimes the only way to download a blocked file is to deactivate the
firewall, download, and then reactivate. But this procedure is, as you both
point out, undertaken at the risk of the person downloading the file in
question (for example, OOo_2.4.1_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe, to be
specific). If one enjoys a relatively quick connexion, the risk should be
worth it, but if one is on a dial-up, I'd advise against. In that latter
case, if the user can't get help in installing a better firewall, it would
probably be best to purchase an OOo CD, or have a more knowleedgeable friend
burn one

Absolutely. I did a re-install of XP prior to the release of the service
pack that turned the firewall on by default, connected to the router before
I realised the firewall was off, and got infected within 20 secs!

We are constantly seeing this question repeated on this list. Most of them
are phrased similar to this:

*"I downloaded your openoffice program and cannot open any of it. It
takes me to a folder that has numerous folders and none of them do what it
shows that they should do. Help!"*

It just dawned on me after months of repeated inquiries to this list about
this same subject what the problem might be. Windows users are almost
always the ones asking this question. Windows XP comes installed with
Explorer having the ability to open zip and self-extracting files as
though they were just another folder on your hard drive. Thus when users
who have not turned off this 'feature' try to run the installation file,
Explorer opens the file and shows them the contents instead.

Maybe we should put clear instructions on the download page about what to
do if this happens.

Any comments?

I think (from what I've seen) that the big problem is that when the
downloaded executable is double-clicked, OO creates a folder ON THE DESKTOP
which contains the un-packed installation files. Many Windows users see that
folder and assume that that is where the program icons are situated, open
the folder, and of course get gibberish. Perhaps the use of the C:/temp
folder, with an automatic deletion of installation files instead might help?

Hi Sharon,
I'm sorry to hear you're having troubles downloading. You don't give us very
much information so it's hard to help you. The openoffice installation file
is over 100MB in size. If you are using a dial-up connection to the
internet this will many hours to download. If you are getting a message
about the file being corrupted (this appears to happen on some Windows
systems) you can easily find the solution to your problem by noting the
exact text on the message and googling the error message along with
openoffice. You will quickly find a solution that way.
Cheers,
Jonathan

Estelle, perhaps you can try using a download manager that will allow
you to resume the download if you lose your connection. Please see:

http://download.openoffice.org/common/downloadtools.html

If you need help connecting with a download manager, then you will need
to use a direct link to one of the OpenOffice.org mirrors. Post back to

Perhaps someone can recommend some good download managers for folks like
this? I see the P2P pages off of the OOo download page, but no mention
of download managers that will allow a resume if the dialup link is
broken - which I think is happening in many of these cases.

Anyone tried this Sun Downloader for windows?
http://www.sun.com/download/sdm/
Perhaps that could be specifically tweaked for OOo downloads as well.

And while googling the sun download manager I stumbled across:
http://download.openoffice.org/common/downloadtools.html
I wonder why the only way I found that page was via google...

For linux I use gwget - and very much like the gui and ability to set
the download rate without having to remember the cli options on wget.

Hi George,
I'm sorry you're having difficulties downloading open office. It really
isn't complicated at all:
1. Go to this site
http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/index.html
2. Click on the long green box that says "Download Openoffice.org"
3. Select and click on the operating system you are using: Windows, Linux,

There are some issues with the download procedure that should be addressed:

There are common questions that are asked on this list re: starting to
use OpenOffice, such as:
Does it work with Vista? What about .docx files? What about the
existing copy of OOo on my computer (upgrade)?

These should be answered in the selected operating section of
download. Every time a common sense question is asked by a new OOo
user, if it looks like the answer will apply to a large group, it should
be clearly answered in the above section.

Many people have asked 'what about the existing copy on my computer
now. Most of the time, the answer is something like 'they can both
reside at the same time'. Where? When you delete the previous version,
are there any common files that are lost? How do you gracefully delete
the previous version later?

The windows install is pretty straight forward, other than the fact that
what is going on behind the graphics is hidden from the user. Linux is
another item entirely. For years, when I go to Linux, it says to
install version x (x=an old version), do this. What about the current
version? Probably best to delete the version number entirely, as the
user is probably downloading the most current version.

The instructions are not clear and complete. The best test is to ask a
total neophyte to download & install the program. Every time the
person asks a question, take a note, fix the doc and try again, until
everyone's grandmother can install without a question.

If you want a target to aspire to, try Firefox.

A couple of Linux Questions: has it been tested in 'my' distribution?
When do I install a root? Why? What happens differently?
Which directory do I put the downloaded file in? Is that where it will
live? If that directory is just used to explaode the zip file in, what
happens to the files when the install is complete? Does the install
probram get rid of all of the temporary files and delete the directory,
while saving the downloaded copy somewhere else?

What about java with respect to the current java on my system. Do I
have he current java for this install? How do I find out? Is my
previous java removed?

I could go on, but I think I have made my point. This is how I test
applications that I write for our company. Those questions and
'mistakes' are MINE, not the user's.

Just like Firefox and Thunderbird, the Seamonkey page has a large
"Download Now" graphic. The OOo graphic says "get openoffice.org"
which I can understand will be confusing to those not familiar with
it. Maybe that should be changed to "Download Now". I'll file the bug

I had OOo 2.0 on my old Windows 98 (first edition, NOT the SE version)
PC which is a 450 MHz 320 MB Dell Dimension XPS R450. It worked but it
was INCREDIBLY slow. Most of the time working with it was waiting for
the damned thing to get the work done. It mad me really mad and
finally I uninstalled it and reinstalled 1.1.5, which is slow too but
still a lot faster than 2.0.

Your PC seems to be even older than mine since you said that you don't
even have a CD drive in it, so I wouldn't even think of 2.x if I was
you.

By the way, owning such an antique computer, don't you think it's time
to buy a newer one? You can probably get a used one that is very much
faster than yours, without digging too deep in your wallet.

And when you bought a new PC, why not installing Linux on it instead
of the very outdated Windows 98? Only a suggestion... I did it and I
am very happy with it, but on the other hand, you are not me...

Hi Brant

Unfortunately there is no way to update OOo except by replacing the
whole suite. I think the debugging required for incremental patches on
the different platforms makes this the most reliable for the
developer/QA resources available.

Which is also better for the user, since it limits the number of bugs
that would be added in development of incremental patches.)

You might like to wait a few days, as 2.3 is due for release very soon.
I hope you use a download manager if you are on dial-up.
The release notes for the new version should indicate whether it will
install to a different directory structure or over the top of your old
installation. I any case removal of the old system first is rarely
needed. Even if it installs "parallel" it can usually find and utilise
the settings you have. One exception is if you have manually installed
extra dictionaries - including custom word lists. It is a good idea to
make a backup of those, as they tend to be overwritten.

On windows, you could try one of the various freebie download managers -
try googling for "freeware download manager". These will (server
permitting) restart from the middle of a download.

If using u*nix, wget is a handy program for downloading, and allows
restarts from partway through.

Or find a friend with broadband.

But really, if you're stuck on a slow serial line, I'd echo the
sentiment about buying a CD. It's probably easier on the patience.
A download manager should help solve your problem. I use Firefox with
the DownThemAll extension and it has saved me numerous times even on
broadband. It will resume on sites that support resuming and most that
are hosting large files do.

Here in the US there are ISPs that provide CDs via mail for very
reasonable prices. One that I used before I got DSL shipped for a total
of $2.50 and I got stuff within a couple of days. see
http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/modules/cart/index.php?ba=pdtl&product=339

I believe they are in the OOo list.

You still have some choices.

You can try BitTorrent. You can stop and start the reload at will and as many
times as you would like.

You can buy the CD at
http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y05Y3587008Y1434409/002-1208050-6036837

at 13.95 which includes free Shipping.

Or you can find a friend that will download it for you. and they can put it
on CD or on a Flashdrive (Its less than 80 Megs)

I am not sure SRC680_m130 = 2.0.0RC1. Se my recent post to get swedish RC1.

OH, i forgot one important note for MSWin users:
Uninstall any previous 2.0 version first due to problems in windows installer!

It may help to use a download manager, if you are not already.

Have you checked the MD5 checksums? If they don't check out properly, then
the file has not downloaded correctly.

I think that OpenOffice.org does not work on OS9 on the Mac. Check out

The file should be somewhere around 90MB, so you might not have downloaded
the right file. Go to http://download.openoffice.org/1.1.4/index.html and
select your prefered language, operating system, and download site. Any
site will work, but closer ones may be quicker.

WinXP will let you view the contents of .zip files, but I always prefer to
extract them with either 7-zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) or WinZip
(http://www.winzip.com/) before trying to install.
