Re: License Agreement --- Only 1 install???
Hi Dirk, I'm glad you guys understand how developers work (Work on only one machine? no way! Minimum: laptop + desktop, and as others have noted, often: desktop (home office), desktop (office), laptop (everywhere else!)). However, I think your license agreement should be explicit in granting what you say above. The problem with leaving it the way it is now is that it's not clear if we are in violation or not (not sure how a post on a forum plays legally - does that constitute an "official" amendment to a license agreement? Why not put what you said above into the license agreement and make it explicit? "As long as you don't use Versions simultaneously on multiple machines, we're absolutely cool if you use the same license code on several machines as long as those are all machines belonging or primarily used by the same person." That seems to say it pretty well to me. My only gripe _might_ be that when I'm debugging a nasty bug I sometimes work on two machines at the same time, well, generally time-slicing, but using both back and forth. I'd like to be able to leave Versions open on both machines while I do that, but it's not a show-stopper if I have to quit one and then relaunch (boring though!). For reference, The OMNI Group license for OmniOutliner contains this: "The Omni Group grants to you a non-exclusive, limited right to install and use The Omni Group software program downloaded or contained on the CD-ROM or disk (the "Software"). The license permits either (a) multiple users to install and use the Software on a single machine; or (b) a single user to install and use the Software on multiple machines. However, a single license does not allow multiple users to ever use Software on multiple machines, regardless of whether such use is concurrent, except in the case of Family Pack licensing. " Clause (b) is the one that pertains to your situation (I don't know that you want to allow (a), though that seems reasonable to me also). Some developers make it more restrictive and say only use it on two machines, and only purchaser/licensee may use it. E.g., BBEdit: "You may use the program and documentation on not more than two (2) machines and copy the program and documentation into any machine-readable or printed form for backup or support of your use of the program and documentation on either or both machines, provided that no copy of the program and documentation may be used by anyone other than you." Please consider amending your License agreement to be more explicit about supporting the configurations many/most developers actually want/ need to use. Completely confused on revert to rev X
I'm totally confused by how the "Revert to Revision.." feature works. I have a file, let's say main.c, currently checked out at rev 8. I want to revert to rev 6. So I right click on main.c, choose "Revert main.c to Revision..." and double click on rev 6. Now I've got rev 6, but if I make changes and try to commit, it says it's out of date. So I do "update," but now it's merged my changes in with rev 8 which I don't want. I can't even figure out how to do this via svn command line. How do I just go back to rev 6 and commit it as rev 9? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. Suggestions - compare (diff) almost anywhere
There are some areas that are screaming for the ability to diff. For example: if I right click a file and choose "Revert X to Revision" and the history comes up, I should be able to right click any of those revisions and either view the full file or do a diff with another version. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. The History Log dialog displays two "show changes" buttons: an upper button below the list of revisions, and a lower below the list of changed paths in the revison. Hi, MANY thanks for getting the license issue resolved! I have one other outstanding issue with Versions now. I keep getting the above message every 5 minutes or so. Apparently, Versions is trying to contact my OLD svn hosting service (for some reason). I recently moved all my repos to a new service; I verified my repos today in Versions. Great, message sent. As someone whose purchased the software and is failing the registration process I sure would appreciate a fix. I find it difficult to see if the app is updating the cirrent view since the only indication is a tiny "spinner" icon that appears at the top of the "Name" column. When I work in a large repository this header if often scrolled out of view. Website is awfully broken
Download link links to "#" and the super-fancy script fails to work in Opera 9.6. When I open Feedback link from within the application (which I had to download via Safari), it goes to home page rather than feedback page. When I go to feedback page myself, "Solving problems Experiencing trouble? Look here first." text is really a text, not a link. "Send us an e-mail" form ends up on google's domain!? and of course throws an error, requesting me to report to google's support. WTF!? I'm appalled that a simple static page can fail in so many ways in such basic areas of functionality. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. Problem with externals that use ssl certificates
I have a working directory, let's call it "wd1," that contains external definitions to a different repository host. That repository host must be reached through ssl, and requires certificates for authentication. I am able to put information in ~/.subversion/servers specifying certificates and certificate passwords for that host. Using that information I am able to update wd1 through the command-line as "svn update". However, I am *not* able to update wd1 through versions. It seems that versions is not able to use the certificate information in ~/.subversions/servers. I also found that if the connection prompted me for a password, it would cause an error in versions. Versions did not seem to be able to intercept the password request. I wasn't terribly bothered by this until recently --- it wasn't that much trouble to update wd1 through the command-line, and most of my interactions with wd1 worked fine. However, I just pulled a new update of versions, and now the behavior is much worse. Versions seems to be polling the repository for this working directory, causing it to repeatedly pop up a dialog window, prompting me for my userid and password for this server. This is very annoying --- it effectively causes versions to lock up, and even if I cancel out of the dialog box, it just comes back later. Is there some way to avoid this behavior? Is there some way I can make versions attend to my .subversion/servers file? I have just checked, and svn update from the command line still works fine. Thanks for any suggestions. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. Re: License not working, support form failing
Hi everone, We're getting closer to a solution and have almost figured out the regression of the registration bug. If some of you who are experiencing similar issues with registering could email a system profile to [EMAIL PROTECTED], we'd really appreciate it. Please use the subject "Registration bug profile". Re: Product Activation? Ugh.
A simple license code without activation would suffice, and I'd gladly pay more for that license. Additionally, they could provide unique, "watermarked" downloads of the app for each licensee for legal prosecution if desired. No, it's not the perfect solution, but nothing ever will be. At least this solution doesn't inconvenience the person actually taking the time and financial effort to pay for the software! The "indecent people" are not the ones that wrote the software or made the decision to implement a draconian licensing mechanism, so no, they are not wasting my time. Regardless, I don't want to turn this into a debate. I asked legitimate support questions relating to the licensing in my original post to which I still hope to get an answer on. The fact is that software copyright infringement will always exist and people like me DO pay for the developer's time. In my own anecdotal experience developing software, the people that infringe would never pay for the software anyway. As someone else already said already -- it's only the paying customers who suffer. On Nov 17, 4:17 pm, Ray <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > What would you suggest to them as a license model? Mime types for Illustrator files
One area where the SVN documentation is very poor is that it tells you that you can set the mime types for files but it does not tell you where or how to set it for a file type. At runtime, check the key against the other provided license details before running. If they don't match, don't run. Display the username and email address in the About dialog, and the splash screen when the app starts up. (Make it obvious who "owns" the license to help people self-enforce). 4. Don't rely on any "call home" to check the license. This inconveniences legitimate users and does absolutely nothing useful to prevent the license mechanism from being hacked. This won't enforce the requirement of "install x times and only run one instance concurrently", but meets other requirements. It has the added bonus of no longer requiring you, the software developer/publisher, to even be involved past purchase. > It sucks that decent people have to put blocks up on decent software > because indecent people steal it, the fact is that it's the indecent people > who > are wasting your time, not the developers who want to be paid for their > work (time). I absolutely, whole-heartedly support software development. I make my living doing it, and support anyone else who attempts to do the same. However, draconian enforcement has been shown repeatedly, in study after study, to have _zero_ positive effect. It inconveniences legitimate, paying users, and has _no_ detrimental impact on people who would steal the software. They'll steal it in any case. Lots of talented people out there will crack your authentication mechanism, usually within days of you releasing it. Is that right? Of course not. A lot of companies knee-jerk licensing though, and end up inadvertently causing their legitimate customers problems, without having much impact on whether their software is stolen. Can of worms :) Jeff --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. In my opinion, as a long-time software developer and senior manager for a multi-million dollar business, it appears as though the v1.0 release wasn't tested too well. Nor, were the mechanisms that are to support it's release. It think it would be in everyone's best interest - even that of the company to maintain "face" - that they roll-back their V1.0 until everyone beta testing has tested it and given their sign of approval that it works. In addition, those aspects of the release mechanism, licensing, etc need to be tested and validated as well. At this point, even though the software has up to this point been a very nice piece of work, these release "fumbles" are easily avoidable with good QA and testing practices. In my humble opinion, a roll-back with refund should be top priority until the team has fixed the issues with the commercial release - this includes the mechanisms to handle the release. I don't think anyone on this group would disagree that the today's experience has shown a very pre-mature implementation. On the business side, one could conjecture as to why this may have happened? Pressure form investors maybe - but that pressure may certainly backfire in lost sales due to poor roll-out experience. So? Re: License not working, support form failing
Hmm... registration is still borked, I haven't (won't) try with my dot- mac as I'm wanting to move away from it. Hopefully the guys can fix up the license database on their end. Versions is definitely populating via the default mail address in the Address Book. Additionally, Mail is now showing (following my update of my default address) these two license key emails as being sent to my MobileMe and dot-mac (and not work email address), so obviously there's some jiggery pokery going on with the email addressing in Mail + Address Book entries. At least by examining the email source it looks like the license key mails went to just my personal address. Just need to get license key bound to my MobileMe account and I'm good :) On Nov 17, 8:50 pm, James <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > By the time I posted, it looks like the answer of where the app was > getting my work email address from was posted herein. Re: Product Activation? Ugh.
Great example. Yes, they will probably fix it eventually... but what if it happens again? Three times? For a month at a time? And you're right, they do seem to be quite decent folk (and have written a great piece of software). But even decent people running decent companies sometimes have to make hard business decisions. As a paying customer with clients that rely on my productivity, I'd prefer to not be a victim of any consequences of those decisions. -J On Nov 17, 3:37 pm, Jeff <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > situation is a perfect example: I bought a license 6 hours ago, and it > fails to validate on their server. Re: License not working, support form failing
Snap. I am experiencing the exact same issues too only I received two emails with the same license key - one to my work email address and dot-mac, and the other (again) to my work email address and MobileMe. When I purchased the license, I used my MobileMe address, and I used my dot-mac when I originally registered for the beta so I can understand the mix-up (based on the app storing my dot-mac address and then getting confused upon registration). I'm a little concerned with where Versions is getting my work email address from as I certainly haven't used it with this app in the past. Hopefully, it's pulling it from *somewhere* within my OS X install locally, but I would be a little more than upset if the app is digging about for other email addresses bound to my OS X login account and sending them over the wire.. Re: License not working, support form failing
Steve, Thanks, I figured that's what was happening. My concern was more that this was related to the registration bug (i.e. it was using an address book email address to calculate a checksum to feed into the license check, instead of using the email address from the registration form). Long shot I know, but it was odd behaviour ;) Jeff On Nov 17, 3:40 pm, orclinstall <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Jeff, > > It appears that it is taking the default mail address out of the > Address Book. Re: Product Activation? Ugh.
Strange. All the other software I've purchased was 'delivered' and works just fine without any product activation ;) And I'd say comparing the activation of Sofa to Adobe's is a bit unrealistic. The likelihood of Adobe or their activation servers going away is far, far, far less than Sofa's doing the same. In terms of internet access, I meant: Do you have to have internet access when you launch the app so that it can phone home and verify its license. Not everyone uses SVN from the WAN. Amusing quote though, thanks for the laugh! Re: Product Activation? Ugh.
Bump for this, well-stated. It's a shame that companies feel they have to do this: it inconveniences paying users, and is a minor obstacle at best for anyone that really wants to steal the software. I've been burned a few times in the past, and I'm pretty disappointed to find that they've locked Versions down this tight. My current situation is a perfect example: I bought a license 6 hours ago, and it fails to validate on their server. I'm sure they'll eventually fix it (they seem like a decent folks) but in the meantime, I'm spending time posting on this forum, trying permutations of license details etc. in an attempt to get it working. Basically, I'm wasting _my_ time as a paying customer, trying to get around a broken license mechanism. Re: License not working, support form failing
Something interesting I noticed. I registered my license under my home email address. Versions seems to want to pre-populate the dialog with my work email address instead. Everytime I go into the dialog to try and resubmit, I have to change my email address back to my home address before clicking submit (my name and license key are retained properly). Could it possibly be that it's using the wrong email address for a checksum? If not, other hints would be appreciated. Hey Ceriel, The .subversion directory is : /Users/USERNAME/.subversion (the . makes it invisible in Finder by default - use the shell to see it) Mark's tip below about changing the permissions/ownership of the directory is promising too. Continuous updates caused a force quit.
Hey Guys, I purchased and downloaded the new Versions app today. I must say, that I absolutely LOVE it so far. The recent updates are great. I'm only experiencing one problem so far, and it might have to do with the continuous updates / version checking that the newest version does. The Problem: I have a repository for a client of mine that does not need a username / password combo and only logs in and makes updates with an ssh key. Versions seems to stop on this repository and continually pop up a username / password combo every 2 minutes. I tried having it save a user / password combo permanently, but it kept popping up the login info dialog. In order to get around this, I planned on just closing the app down when I don't need it, but that was also unsuccessful because it grayed out the "quit" action in the file menu and it wouldn't quit with cmd+q or from the apple dock either. Which caused me to have to force quit to close the application. My guess is that those two problems are probably related. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. Huge memory usage in 1.0 release
The 1.0 release seems to use a whole lot more memory than beta 9 did. I'm guessing it has to do with the "number of modified files for each bookmark" indicator. After I first launch Versions, Activity Monitor shows Versions using up 50%-150% of the CPU and "Real Memory" gradually increasing to about 240 MB over the course of a few minutes. This is a lot more than it was using prior to the release (I believe it never exceeded 100 MB or so). I'm guessing it's a leak since the memory usage doesn't drop after the initial spurt of activity. The big initial CPU usage subsides, but will occasionally pick up again even when the app is sitting in the background. I'm stuck with 640 MB of RAM at work so this is a bit painful. Hope this can be addressed soon. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. Hi Dirk, I just sent you (or Versions) an e-mail also about the license stuff, sorry for a double posting! Re: License Agreement --- Only 1 install???
Hi guys, As the author of the license agreement, please let me clear up the intent of these limitations. Here's the relevant text from the EULA: "The Commercial License and NFR License both do not allow Versions to be activated and used on more computers than the number of computers you have obtained said License(s) for. Sofa may, at its sole discretion, for your convenience decide to allow you to activate Versions on additional computers within reasonable limits. Notwithstanding such a decision you are only licensed to use Versions simultaneously on the amount of computers you have obtained said License(s) for." As usual with these kinds of agreements, the language is a bit harsher than the intent. Emphasis should be on "Sofa may, at its sole discretion, for your convenience decide to allow you to activate Versions on additional computers within reasonable limits.". Well, decision made :) As long as you don't use Versions simultaneously on multiple machines, we're absolutely cool if you use the same license code on several machines as long as those are all machines belonging or primarily used by the same person. Our assumption was that people would try to use the same license code on several of their personal machines anyway, the language in the license agreement is there so there can be no doubt that we have the right to block license codes that are being (ab)used excessively. Please drop me a line, or follow-up here, if you have further questions about the EULA. Thanks :) - Dirk Stoop Sofa / Versions On Nov 17, 5:44 pm, Hugues Lismonde <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Same here... Re: Version out of beta?
Hey everybody, Glad to see that the pricing policy. Only 1-install isn't a concern for me because I use my laptop for everything but I do think it is something to rethink. I'd say that in general two installs would be great. Although I like most of the new features added with this 1.0 release I also have some concerns: For some reason versions now prompts me every other 10 minutes or so to authenticate for a repository. This is really annoying... The new inspector window just doesn't feel rightly positioned there. I much rather have a floating property window or a horizontally positioned window at the top just below the toolbar that animates down. This current view isn't wide enough to show my external paths and the folder icon is really ugly around the edges. I also would like to suggest a hide button on the window itself. Another thing I would really love to see improved is toggling between changed view and show all view. If you have a file under selection in the changed view and you hit show all it is very likely that you have to scroll down quite a bit again to see the file/folder you were inspecting in the changed view. I really like the addition of the numbers showing local/remote changes but I really dislike their color. It really much rather have 2 numbers without the color.. The changed/all buttons on tiger still aren't identical to those of timeline, browse, history. This might all sound a little harsh but for me personally it feels that these last features were added a bit to quickly. I'm also still hoping for merge/branch support. I'll surely buy a license because versions is clearly superior to all other clients out there for the mac but would like to emphasize that a lot can be improved to make it an even more kick ass product. I absolutely agree. I rotate between 2 machines, only working on one at a time. With a 10% discount, I am looking at $45, which isn't bad. -- Gary On Nov 17, 2008, at 11:07 AM, Dave DeLong wrote: > > I wouldn't be surprised if their server is getting hammered pretty > hard. > > I likewise will be buying a license as soon as I can. > > Dave > > On Nov 17, 2008, at 9:04 AM, gemmazoejones wrote: > >> >> The link is definitely not working. >> >> Please sort it out asap and I'll be getting a license. >> >> Gemma >> >> On 17 Nov 2008, at 16:01, Paul Willis wrote: >> >>> >>> Hi >>> >>> I just had an email from Beanstalk, where I had registered for a >>> free >>> account, offering me a 10% discount off cost of Versions now it is >>> out >>> of beta. >>> >>> I see on the front of the Versions website >> www.versionsapp.com/ a buy now button marked with the price of €39 (euros) >>> >>> Unfortunately neither the ink from the website or the one in the >>> Beanstalk email are working. >>> >>> Paul >> >> >>> > > > > --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group. License Agreement --- Only 1 install???
Well I was ready you buy up my copy of Versions, until I read that it will cost me $50 PER Computer. I don't know about other people's setup, but I have a Mac at work, home and a laptop for everything in between. I work on the same projects on all 3, all 3 for the same business and same user. But there's no way I'm dropping $150 just to have versions available on all 3. I'm a small start-up with only one other person working here, and he has the same setup... thereby doubling our triple cost already. I would strongly urge you to reconsider your license agreement and that it should be one license per USER and not per computer. I'm sorry, but this was a deal breaker. Good luck to ya'll! --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Versions" group.
