yeah i tried file import movies (i swear this did not work 2 months ago)
and it worked
didn't bring the files in straight like from iphoto (which is what it

it converts the file to Apple Intermediate Codec and puts a copy in
the project folder
which is fine if that's what it needs to do
i just wish it was smarter
like if i dragged it into the program (ala imovie06) it would just
convert and be ready to edit
or it saw it in photo like David Lee King can.

PLUS we taught a workshop with a bunch of college students who used the flip
and 75% of the mac users could bring the clips in fine (other 25% had
to use MPEG Streamclip)
99% of the PC users could bring the clips into Movie Maker fine (which
also was not the case when i tested this 2 months ago)

It's because I laid hands on my Mac first and then did a rain dance :-)

That's pretty freaky that 75% of your class could, but 25% couldn't!

One more thought on the differences between our two Macs - I don't have
iMovie 06 on mine ... I wonder if that makes some crazy difference?

2009-07-03 Thread Gena
Another for the Kodak Zi6 - got mine on sale at Target. The Mino, Ultra Mino
and others were comparatively priced.

I had done my research before and was leaning toward either the Creative Vado
or Zi6. Couldn't locate the Creative Vado for local evaluation purchase.

Checked out review videos on YouTube and CNet. I just didn't care for the video
of the Flips. Still I was going back and forth.

It came down to touch. I don't care for the toggle on the Zi6 but it wasn't a
deal breaker. The Flips were not comfortable in my hand.

I like using SD cards and rechargeable AA batteries. For day to day travel it
is more than what I need. For longer events I bring my JVC Hard drive camcorder.

Love that HD Macro mode. Silly to shoot in HD at the moment but it does look
nice.

Id love to know the specific of the codec it uses. Then we can compare.

Cool - I've never hit apple i before!

Here's what it says:
Format: XviD (3ivx), 640X480, millions
microsoft ADPCM, Mono, 44.100 kHz
FPS: 30
etc... (pretty sure that's the relevant stuff).

Checking the 3ivx thing - on your Flip, double click the icon to open up the
folder, open the System folder, open the Install folder ... and install the
macintosh 3ivx installer. There's one for Windows, too - so it works with
Windows Movie Maker. That's what I installed to make it work.

It's working for me! I think with the added codec, it works fine. At least,
I was just able to take a flip video, dump it into iphoto, then open imovie
09 (yes, the new one), in event library click the iPhoto videos, and drag
the video into a new project.

So somewhere between the Flip codec and iMovie 09, Flip is working easier

One thing I noticed about editing clips from my Xacti E1 into iMovie 06 and
iMovie 09 is that even though they import nicely, and cut and paste clips, they
crap out with titles. So far, the work around is to use the Streamclip Mpeg app
that will change clips into DV files. This makes titling work much better.

It's not an HDFlip - it's the Flip Ultra that shoots SD video. Still willing
to send a clip if the model of my Flip doesn't change anything... gotta love

John,
I've a feeling that iMovie imported it for editing in MPEG4 format
instead of DV. I've once written about how iMovie's MPEG4 video
editing format was bullshit, because it took very long to import and
quality was lacking (e.g. titles looked bad). My short writeup at
http://theory.isthereason.com/?p=705

Bottomline: Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's way better to have
iMovie import/transcode into DV format to keep everything clean.

Kevin, I have had problems editing MPEG4 in iMovie 06-09. I'll give it a go and
see if I can bring files in directly as DV files and eliminate Steamclip step.
DV editing works much better, even when I had a Sony Cybershot that captured in

i really don't know what the deal is
i can't get any flip clips to be recognized my imovie 09 v.0.8.3
they're in my iphoto
and imovie refuses to see them.
it brings Xacti Mp4s in fine.
i even tried one of David Lee King's clips.

i'm updating my flip software from here, so i'll see if that helps
http://www.theflip.com/softwareupdate/

fwiw, i have two macs and a flip HD

I have only inserted the camera into one mac, so if codec is being
installed, it's only on that one system

but i have edited video on both systems using imovie09 without any
issues, so seems to work fine

We shoot our internet series Momversation (www.momversation.com) with the Kodak
Zi6. We literally mailed the cameras to all our panelists along with a short
video we created about the product and how to use it.

For the most part it's worked great, however, we have been having problems
lately. The most common problem is that the camera shuts off unexpectedly, so
you could be taping a whole segment and not realize that the camera is no
longer recording.

But, overall, it's a great camera with easy plug and play features if you're
using a mac. The only thing I wish it had was a rotating viewfinder so you
could actually tell if you're in frame, if shooting yourself.

One other thing. For the manual control freak, there are a tons of manual
settings on this camera. You can use it in full automatic mode or make
everything manual. I havent seen a small camera like this that has manual
focus before. I was very happy to find that out :)

It certainly is impressive and feature rich for the price point.

I figured that clip would show how it does in a poorly lit situation. That

Only thing I dislike about the flips is it's form factor - but that's just my

[videoblogging] Re: Which cheapo Mini HD Camcorder would you buy today?

2009-07-01 Thread David Howell
I just recently bought the Xacti CG10. It's a nice little camera. I shot my
latest video on it - http://www.disposablemedia.ca No filters on that video and
the audio is as is. Only thing I did with it was cross-fades.

I'm not a fan of the Flips. Hate the brick style form factor. The pistol grip
on the Xacti is great though.

If you're going to edit the footage you shoot in FCP or FCE from the Xacti, you
have to convert the files to Apple Intermediate Codec first. I think iMovie can
edit the files without doing anything to them.

I'd love your take on the best cheap Mini HD camcorder.

Here are the contenders as far as I can tell (please add on your fave if you
 prefer it over these)

 - Flip Ultra HD
 - Flip Mino HD
 - Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG10
 - Kodak Zi6

I admit I like the pistol grip form factor of the Xacti and prefer both the
Kodak/Xacti because you can use your own memory card. BUT, I've watched
videos' on Vimeo where the Flips having better video quality and low light
performance. What about sound quality? The Flip's seem to do poorly in this
 area?

I agree that the flip cameras are good and cheap. Great recommendation
especially for someone buying a camera for an organization.

But the new Xacti CG10 is almost as inexpensive: http://bit.ly/r4lu8
As everyone says, the pistol grip is really the thing. I also love how
the camera turns on immediately on flipping open the screen. Its the
perfect pocket camera. Takes great photos as well.

I'm intrigued by the price/performance of Xacti CG10. Several wins for
it, including video directly importable into iMovie without any
conversion (true?).

One distinguishing feature between low-cost (Flips) vs. mid-ranged HD
cameras is the image stabilization (IS) feature. Xacti CG10 cheats by
using digital stabilization (is it still decent?). An optical IS
feature would be a big deal if you enjoy shooting casual video
handheld.

I know the Flip video needs conversaion before bringing into iMovie.
Ryanne made a screencast here:

Cant be sure of the new Xacti till i get it, but the current round of
Xactis import directly into iMovie and FCP.

Jay, thanks for the video example of the Xacti CG10.

Video footage looks very nice. I handled one in Radio Slack today and
it felt great. Very impressed that this is a sub $200USD camcorder. I
figure it would be pretty functional mobile rig when paired up with an
EyeFi SDHC Wireless Card for wireless uploading at home and at
hotspots. For that matter, with tethering available to many people now
on Nokia phones and recently the iPhone it could be a nice mobile
combo for short HD videos.

One other thing. For the manual control freak, there are a tons of manual
settings on this camera. You can use it in full automatic mode or make
everything manual. I havent seen a small camera like this that has manual focus

It certainly is impressive and feature rich for the price point.
