Re: Seri and dictation.

2012-07-23 Thread Lynn Schneider
I would also add that, in my experience at least, Siri gets more and more
accurate as you use it, so don't give up if things don't work well right away.
Of course, there are always those server and internet issues. There was a
2-day period of time recently where I could not use Siri at all despite
rebooting the phone, etc. and it just miraculously came back at some point, but
in general, Siri and I have worked well together.

Re: Downcast: starting a partially played podcast

2012-07-23 Thread Scott Howell
Garth,

Interesting that you have not always had success with podcasts restarting where
you left off. I have not encountered this problem with any of the podcasts I
subscribe to.

On Jul 22, 2012, at 10:54 PM, Garth Humphreys ghu...@gmail.com wrote:

I thought that Downcast did this automatically. If you tap on the episode
again at a later time, it should just pick the stream back up at the point
you left off. The playback position is not always retained correctly though.
I sometime find that it doesn't work properly, especially if the app has been
playing the podcast in the background.

I have a playlist set up that just includes part played episodes which I find
 very handy.

Re: Connecting to a network

2012-07-23 Thread Scott Howell
You will have to choose the encryption your router is configured to use. The
best encryption is WPA2 personal.. In fact using a 20 plus character password
will ensure a strong password as well. WEP is not recommended but would do the
job if no other option is available.

Verbatum keyboard [was Re: RII keyboard]

2012-07-23 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Like I said, it's a folding keyboard. When folded it's about the size of
a small paperback book. When unfolded, it locks in place. It was meant
to work with IOS devices, so it has several dedicated keys on it, like a
home key. You can definitely touch type on it, although a few keys are
in slightly different positions. For example, the number keys 1 through
5 are shifted to the right a bit to make room for a few extra keys in
the upper left hand corner. The b key is a bit further away than normal
since it's on the other side of the fold.

Remember, I only recently got this keyboard, so I haven't put it through
it's paces yet. One of the reasons I got it, was I was able to purchase
it locally, so I could give it a try and return it if I didn't like it,
but I don't plan on returning it. I opted not to get a smaller keyboard
that you could just thumb type on because I feel I'm proficient enough
with the virtual keyboard, and if I was going to get a portable
bluetooth keyboard, I wanted to be able to touch type on it.

There have been several messages on this and other keyboards on the list
recently. I'd suggest checking out the archive and the applevis.com site.

I checked the archives myself, and that does seem to be the keyboard I
have. Note, I wanted the keyboard to use when traveling, so I could get
to touch type when showing up in hotels and the like without having to
carry around a full sized bluetooth keyboard. like i SAID, when walking
around, in a car or sitting in a restaurant, I don't mind using the
virtual keyboard.

BTW, here's the message I found from Julian in the archive:

Amazon has a better deal on that Verbatim folding keyboard which I
also use btw. Here's the link to purchase:

Subject: Verbatum keyboard [was Re: RII keyboard]

Like I said, it's a folding keyboard. When folded it's about the size
of a small paperback book. When unfolded, it locks in place. It was
meant to work with IOS devices, so it has several dedicated keys on
it, like a home key. You can definitely touch type on it, although a
few keys are in slightly different positions. For example, the number
 keys 1 through
5 are shifted to the right a bit to make room for a few extra keys in the
upper left hand corner. The b key is a bit further away than normal since
it's on the other side of the fold.

Remember, I only recently got this keyboard, so I haven't put it through it's
paces yet. One of the reasons I got it, was I was able to purchase it
locally, so I could give it a try and return it if I didn't like it, but I
don't plan on returning it. I opted not to get a smaller keyboard that you
could just thumb type on because I feel I'm proficient enough with the
virtual keyboard, and if I was going to get a portable bluetooth keyboard, I
wanted to be able to touch type on it.

There have been several messages on this and other keyboards on the list
recently. I'd suggest checking out the archive and the applevis.com site.

I haven't used the RII keyboard, but I did just recently get a Verbatum
keyboard, and I would recommend it. It's a folding keyboard, so you'll get a
larger keyboard than the RII keyboard, especially when it's unfolded. On the
up side, you can touch type in the Verbatum keyboard.

ILike2Read pro issues.

2012-07-23 Thread Sandy Tomkins
Hi,

I have both the original and the Pro version of iLike2Read. I have been
reading a book, quite a large one, using the new iLike2Read Pro. I have been
experiencing problems with the phone, apparently, freezing if I touch any part
of the screen, such as the status bar or the info bar at he bottom of the
screen where one finds out what page or percentage the book is focused on.
Indeed, this reminds me of the first version of iLike2Read, when it first came
out. I decided to load the same file into my original version and all my
problems have gone away! So, for now I shall be using the old app and hope that
the issues with the new one can be fixed. Meanwhile, I think I would advise
against using the pro version if you still have the old one. Also, one
attraction of the new version, for me, was the ability to enlarge the text,
which I did try, but either I did it wrong, as I don't really understand the
numerical significance, or it doesn't work properly because when I applied it
there was no visible difference. However, when i first tried to import that
same file into the old version, it appears huge textwise, so much so that I can
only get a part of a letter per screen! So i downloaded the original book, not
from iLike2Read Pro, but from my original source, and all is well.

i have probably confused more than I have illuminated, sorry for that, but,
perhaps, someone could chime in if they have experienced anything like this
freezing issue, just in case it is just with me and maybe I should reinstall.

TIA Sandy.

White on black options?

2012-07-23 Thread Sandy Tomkins
Hallo,

I have a few questions re using the 'white on black option in settings.
1. Has anyone found a way to add it to the rotor?
2. Does anyone know if using this setting, which results in a, generally,
darker screen with just the text highlighted, results in a saving of battery
power?

3. Has anyone found a way to have this option turned on, but have it not affect
images, photos/icons/etc?

Thanks, Sandy.

I have tried the new ILike2ReadPro, there seems to be some strange things. I
also had a problem with the screen, when I tried it.
Can you import a HTML file or an Epub and how? It says that ILike2ReadPro can
handle these formats, but I can not get it to work.

Have you tried the search function in a document? How can we with VoiceOver get
the results shown.

Best regards Annie.

I am one that has not yet installed fleksy and what I use
most from Siri is the dictate feature where I use the
dictate button on the software keyboard. My experience
lately has not been any real issue with accuracy, but
quite a frequent issue with getting it to come back with
the results from what was dictated. It will take the
dictation in those cases, but never respond with the
result. It's hard to say if the accuracy issue is an
extension of the issue of no response and they are quite
related or not. Yeah, yeah they have been using the beta
thing as an excuse to have no standards to measure
against for nearly a year now and the reliability is the
same or worse than it was months ago. Not much of a
quality job on that in my opinion.

This has nothing to do with Fleksy. I had these

Re: ILike2Read pro issues.

2012-07-23 Thread Sandy Tomkins
Hi Annie,

I never really tried those options because of this screen freezing issue.
The book, a text file, reads OK, but try anything clever and your left waiting
for ages just hearing clicks and clunks. I feel sure all this is fixable, as I
said, these problems were evident in the early version of the original app and
yet they were fixed very well eventually.

I think the new version should be good and more flexible once fixed, but
for now, I shall stay with the lesser functionality of the original iLike2Read
app and wait for improvements in the pro version.

Happy reading! Sandy.

Re: White on black options?

Hi Sandy

Unfortunately you can not add it to the rotor. The only option is the negative
for the whole screen, that is, you can not have it such that it doesn't effect
images. BTW this option isn't even available on the Mac, it's the negative or
nothing. Finally, I doubt that it would make any difference to the battery
life. The screen would have to have something like a back light with local
dimming.

Sorry for such a negative post :)

Re: Downcast: starting a partially played podcast

2012-07-23 Thread Garth Humphreys
In the options for creating a playlist, there is one which lets you select part
played only. I just created a playlist with this filter which contains all my
feeds. Downcast probably has the most comprehensive options for playlist
creation I have seen.

Scot, have you not had these issues at all? I am starting to think I should try
deleting the app and doing a reinstall. I find it gets very sluggish at times
and I am actually going back to try iCatcher for a bit.
With Downcast I can wait a few seconds from when tapping on a playlist before
the playlist opens. This sort of sluggishness is apparent in other parts of the
app as well. I do have approximately 70 subscribed podcasts with about 2 to 3
gig of data so the problems could just because of this.

I am going to spend sometime using iCatcher for a while before going back and
deleting / reinstalling Downcast.

So far I am liking the responsiveness of iCatcher but missing the toggle for
continuous playback on the now playing screen.

Well, fortunately, I haven't pinned it down to Fleksy

I suppose I'll have to resort to headset and mic for

I have had almost no luck with Siri for several weeks.
I've done all the turning it off, rebooting the phone,
turning it back on, etc.
Siri, is a beta, and in my experience a very poor beta.
When it works, it is brilliant, but it doesn't work most
of the time for me.
This has nothing to do with Fleksy. I had these
problems way before Fleksy was even talked about, let
alone released.

Re: NFB newsline adding favorite

2012-07-23 Thread Steve Robertson

What is the procedure to add a favorite?

Original message:

I just sat here with my phone and went through the process so I can
write it down.

   * Once I enter Newsline, I double tap Publications to navigate to a
list of my favorites. Then I put the rotor on headings.

   * I then flicked right to jump from paper to paper in my
publications list, double tapping the one I want to read, in this case,
the Sunday New York Times .

   * I then flick right to go through a list of the paper’s individual
sections, or to choose “full paper,” double tapping my choice, in this
instance, the Magazine desk.

   * For some reason, to select an individual article, now it becomes
necessary to flick down rather than to the right to navigate the list
of articles in the Magazine. When I found the one I want to read, I
flicked right for it to begin.

Go into your routers settings and the wireless section with some

so in the wireless security section choose wpa-psk(tkip) + Wpa2-psk (AES) for
the encryption I had the same issue with a friend and she could not connect

RE: siri question

2012-07-23 Thread Joseph Lee
Hi,
You need to consider technical specs of these guys:
* Apart from iPad II, III and iPhone 4S, these use single core processors,
which means it'll run at most one app at once (during one cycle), which
would be quite intense if Siri is officially integrated.
* Apart from the above devices, these have 256 MB of RAM, which hinders
performance somewhat.
* In order for Siri to work effectively, two factors must be satisfied (or
met): constantly live Internet connection for processing voice commands and
fetching answer data, and a good mic input for better processing of voice
data.
It is also worth noting that, since speech recognition uses statistics for
improving its accuracy, you need to use it constantly to help it learn your
accents and speaking style.
Cheers,
Joseph

Re: ILike2Read pro issues.

Hi Sandi.

I think you should report your experiences to the developer, so they can be
fixed.

Best regards Annie.

 Hi Annie,

I never really tried those options because of this screen freezing issue.
The book, a text file, reads OK, but try anything clever and your left
waiting for ages just hearing clicks and clunks. I feel sure all this is
fixable, as I said, these problems were evident in the early version of the
original app and yet they were fixed very well eventually.

I think the new version should be good and more flexible once fixed, but
for now, I shall stay with the lesser functionality of the original
iLike2Read app and wait for improvements in the pro version.

Happy reading! Sandy.

Have you tried the search function in a document? How can we with VoiceOver

Den Jul 23, 2012 kl. 12:45 PM skrev Sandy Tomkins:

 Hi,

I have both the original and the Pro version of iLike2Read. I have been
reading a book, quite a large one, using the new iLike2Read Pro. I have
been experiencing problems with the phone, apparently, freezing if I touch
any part of the screen, such as the status bar or the info bar at he bottom
of the screen where one finds out what page or percentage the book is
focused on. Indeed, this reminds me of the first version of iLike2Read,
when it first came out. I decided to load the same file into my original
version and all my problems have gone away! So, for now I shall be using
the old app and hope that the issues with the new one can be fixed.
Meanwhile, I think I would advise against using the pro version if you
still have the old one. Also, one attraction of the new version, for me,
was the ability to enlarge the text, which I did try, but either I did it
wrong, as I don't really understand the numerical significance, or it
doesn't work properly because when I applied it there was no visible
difference. However, when i first tried to import that same file into the
old version, it appears huge textwise, so much so that I can only get a
part of a letter per screen! So i downloaded the original book, not from
iLike2Read Pro, but from my original source, and all is well.

i have probably confused more than I have illuminated, sorry for that,
but, perhaps, someone could chime in if they have experienced anything like
this freezing issue, just in case it is just with me and maybe I should
 reinstall.

  TIA Sandy.

Hi, everyone. I use Siri to dictate my text messages and most other
corespondences I need to make using my iPhone. I know, I should really get a
bluetooth keyboard to make this more realistic in crowded places and the
like.

Anyway, that's not my question. After dictation, Siri always inserts a
space. This wouldn't be a problem if the space didn't cut Voiceover off as
it is trying to read the message back to me. Is there any way to disable
this feature? It's very tedious, having to find a text field every time I
make a dictation because the space cuts off all read back.

Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

RE: Downcast: starting a partially played podcast

2012-07-23 Thread Cristobal
Downcast has an import feature. When you open iTunes and go into your apps
section, you'll see a part that says something like apps that can sync files
to your computer. Downcast will be one of them. There's an add button you
click on and it will take you through the familiar procedure to select a
file or files in Windows and once you pick the items you want, you press ok
and the subsequently the apply button in iiTunes. Once the files are on your
phone, you'll go into the tools section of Downcast under the more tab I
believe and there you'll see an import option. I'm repeating this all off of
memory, so I may have some steps wrong, but I'm sure others can chime in if
I got anything wrong. In any event, it's pretty simple and straight forward.
YOu can add audio or video. It doesn't really matter. I just created a
folder/playlist called audiobooks and another for stuff with dvs and import
my files into their corresponding playlist. And again, stopping and starting
up where I left off in any file be it a podcast or imported file has never
been an issue for me.

Re: siri question

2012-07-23 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I think it's just because Apple cares about their customers so much, and
they're trying to protect us from ourselves. Maybe running Siri on older
hardware has some serious performance issues and Apple doesn't want
customers to go through that or have to support customers doing that.
Remember, Apple doesn't have to support jail broken phones. If it were
only about the money then Apple wouldn't even support IOS 5 and in
iPhone 3's in the first place, e.g. Android pones. Come guys, have
another cup of Apple Kool-Ade!

Sorry, that was said with tongue in cheek, but there may be legitimate
reasons why Apple doesn't support Siri on older phones. It may be about
the money, but that's why Apple's selling iPhones in the first place
though, so there's nothing really wrong with that either.

Does siri only work on the iphone 4s?

If it can or does work on the iphone 4, how and where do we get it?

Suggestions for integrating services?

2012-07-23 Thread Eric SS
I set a reminder for myself to call someone this morning. I used both the
native reminder app and also checkmark, which is an alternative time and
location-based reminder app. In the body of each I put the telephone number I
needed to call. Neither of those highlighted that number as a telephone number.

Is there something special I could have done to get one of those apps, or
another more appropriate, to dial that number.

Thanks for ideas!

A Quick Questions About The Downcast App

2012-07-23 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a marvelous weekend.

Regarding the Downcast podcatcher: Is there a way to force it to check for
feed updates?

I currently have it set to update every hour but sometimes I get the timing
wrong and know there is an update but have to wait for the hour to pass
before it will check the feeds again.

I figure there must be a way to manually check for podcast episode updates.

Thank you for any help on this?

RE: A Quick Questions About The Downcast App

2012-07-23 Thread Cristobal
Double tap on the top of the screenwhere it says something like Podcasts:
tap to refresh all feeds
This is what I do instead of having Downcast set to a fixed schedule to
refresh all my feeds. I also pause downloads until all feeds are updated so
I can delete whichever podcasts I may not be interested in listenning to and
downloading before enabling downloads again.
Also, you can go into the settings and adjust the interval with which feeds
are refreshed. Either globally or into a particular feed itself. I
forexample listen to a radio show that is taking a break until after Labor
Day so I went into that particular feed and disabled any refreshing all
together until I know it'll be back.

keyboard for home use. But I'd like the keys to be well defined. Marked keys,
perhaps F and J or at least marking of the five key would be ideal.

focus 40 with ios devices

2012-07-23 Thread denise avant
Hi all,
I was using the focus 40, the older model with my ipad, which has the
latest ios version. its the new ipad. I was doing some rather lengthy
Brailling inside the notes file. I notice that at times, the device
was sluggish. sometimes no matter how fast I was Brailling, there was
a misinterpretation of the words. does anyone have any advice? thanks.

Re: A Quick Questions About The Downcast App

2012-07-23 Thread Damashe Thomas

Hi Mark,

If you flick right from the edit button at the top of the podcasts screen,
there is a button that VO should read as podcasts, tap to refresh all
podcasts
This should refresh the podcasts for you. It should be noted that this
particular way of refreshing podcasts manually was added in the most recent
update, or possibly the one before that, so make sure your version is
update.

I hope this helps

Subject: A Quick Questions About The Downcast App

Hello Everyone,

I hope you all had a marvelous weekend.

Regarding the Downcast podcatcher: Is there a way to force it to check
for

feed updates?

I currently have it set to update every hour but sometimes I get the
timing

wrong and know there is an update but have to wait for the hour to pass
before it will check the feeds again.

I figure there must be a way to manually check for podcast episode
updates.

Thank you for any help on this?

Mark

Re: focus 40 with ios devices

2012-07-23 Thread Scott Howell
I gather it is a known issue and affects a number of Braille displays. The hope
is that Apple will address this in iOS 6. I would encourage you to drop a note
to accessibil...@apple.com and let them hear your voice. The more voices the
more likely issues get addressed sooner than later.

I would also add that, in my experience at least, Siri gets more and more
accurate as you use it, so don't give up if things don't work well right
away. Of course, there are always those server and internet issues. There
was a 2-day period of time recently where I could not use Siri at all
despite rebooting the phone, etc. and it just miraculously came back at some
point, but in general, Siri and I have worked well together.

RE: RII keyboard

Ihave both the RII and the Verbatim. While the Verbatim is more comfortable
and easier to type on, the RII is so small it fits into the slot in my purse
intended for my cell phone. (I don't put my phone in there because the case
makes it too bulky for that slot.) I think both are useful; it's a matter of
what you want. The RII keys are quite close together.

I assume Sandy has the same model that we've talked about here on the

Go into your routers settings and the wireless section with some
routers choosing the following makes connecting of different equiptment
better so in the wireless security section choose wpa-psk(tkip) + Wpa2-psk
(AES) for the encryption I had the same issue with a friend and she could
not connect till I got her to change this setting so try this and let me
know if you are able to connect. What router are you using make and model.

The Verbatum keyboard might meet your needs. It's a folding keyboard,
and when folded up, it's about the size of a small paperback book. When
folded out, the keys are fairly normal sized, so you can easily touch
type. A few keys are in slightly different positions due to things like
the fold, so you need to reach a bit further to reach the b key, but I
find this is easy to get used to and well worth the ability to touch
type in general.

always get a larger keyboard for home use. But I'd like the keys to be
well defined. Marked keys, perhaps F and J or at least marking of the

Now if APple would only make a foldable modle of their keyboard; now that would
be just perfect.

RE: Verbatum [was Re: RII keyboard]

2012-07-23 Thread Sandy Finley
Hank, I think Chris is correct. My husband and I just tried to search for
the model number but he said he couldn't find it on the keyboard, the box it
came in, or the print directions. Maybe there is only 1 Verbatim folding
keyboard?

I assume Sandy has the same model that we've talked about here on the list
recently, i.e. 97537. I got mine from Radio Shack, but they also carried it
at Fry's. The best price seems to be on Amazon though:

Re: Status report

2012-07-23 Thread Grant Hardy
Hey Jennie,

For the iPhone software itself, head to Settings, General, Software
Update. However, software updates are pretty infrequent and if you
follow this list you'll be sure to know right away.

For app updates, open the app store and head to the updates tab (at
the bottom right-corner of the screen). All your updates will be
listed there. Eventually, your device will check for updated apps
automatically and the app store icon will have a badge indicating how
many app updates are available. This badge will also be shown on the
button for the updates tab.

I just sat here with my phone and went through the process so I can write it
down.

1. Once I enter Newsline, I double tap Publications to navigate to a
list of my favorites. Then I put the rotor on headings.

2. I then flicked right to jump from paper to paper in my publications
list, double tapping the one I want to read, in this case, the Sunday New
York Times .

3. I then flick right to go through a list of the paper's individual
sections, or to choose full paper, double tapping my choice, in this
instance, the Magazine desk.

4. For some reason, to select an individual article, now it becomes
necessary to flick down rather than to the right to navigate the list of
articles in the Magazine. When I found the one I want to read, I flicked
right for it to begin.

Re: OT: subscribing to mac accessibility apple vis podcasts

2012-07-23 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello there. I don't know which podcast program you are using. However in most
you might be able to just do a search. At least this has been the case with an
app that downcast. With downcast I simply go to add podcast and then search. I
can then type a keyword for what I am looking for. AppleVis for example.

VoiceOver interupting my call, when using headphones?

2012-07-23 Thread Pete Nalda
Today, I was using skoche headphones with volume/play button, and answered a
call with said button, while my phone was in it's otterbox belt clip, and VO
kept interrupting, I don't know if the caller could hear it or not, but knew
something was wrong. Anyone know why VO was misbehaving like this? I thought
maybe because the screen was unlocked, but want to be sure, as I didn't like

RE: VoiceOver interupting my call, when using headphones?

2012-07-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Pete,

I assume when you say Voiceover interrupted your call you meant it was
reading out the call duration? This can happen if the screen is unlocked and
Voiceover focus is on the call duration. You can just swipe right once to
move Voiceover away from that. It's a bit of a bug and it can be annoying if
you use a headset and have your phone in a backpack or put away somewhere. I
suggest you write an email to accessibil...@apple.com, I am pretty sure they
would have received a few mails about this and the more they get the more
likely this will be fixed in a few months when iOS 6 comes out.

Regards,
Sieghard

It actually was reading the phone number. Might have been reading the duration,
but I didn't notice, I just was concentrating getting vo my headset unplugged,
and the phone up to my ear so vo would be quiet.

I'm using Plantronnic voyage BT headset, I experience same always, what I
usually do is to lock the phone with the on/off switch. Very annoying!

Subject: VoiceOver interupting my call, when using headphones?

Today, I was using skoche headphones with volume/play button, and
answered a call with said button, while my phone was in it's otterbox belt
clip, and VO kept interrupting, I don't know if the caller could hear it or
not, but knew something was wrong.
Anyone know why VO was misbehaving like this? I thought maybe because the
screen was unlocked, but want to be sure, as I didn't like this too much.
TIA.
