RE: Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue
Hi Sieghard, Are those cables you're referencing longer lightning cables? Sounds like they must be based on your Amazon Basics description. If so, have you used them with an iPhone 6 since this problem only began with my new iPhone 6? Thanks. I have a couple of 10 foot cables from Monoprice and also one of the Amazon Basics Lightning cables (I think it's 8 or 10 feet as well) and they all work great. I believe the Monoprice cables are around $12 and the Amazon maybe $15, can't remember. At least one other confirmed this message and got a 2-meter lightning cable from the Apple Store in order to avoid it. I can now confirm that I only get this unsupported accessory message after my iPhone is fully charged. I believe others have also reported this same result. So, I decided to save the $30 on the 2-meter lightning cable and continue to use my USB extension cables to provide more length since the phone does charge with this arrangement. If anyone thinks my approach could be detrimental to my iPhone, I'd love to hear your comments. Thanks. Alan Lemly -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: Amazon echo iOS app
Hi Mary. Yes, I received my Amazon Echo a few days ago. The Echo app for the most part is accessible. The only issue I'm seeing is that it's a little funky about updating the screen. It's one of those deals where you might tap on settings for example, but those options don't show up right away and you sometimes have to poke around the screen to find them. Having said that however, I was able to get the Echo up and running with no sighted ehlp. Basically, you find a good spot for the Echo, plug it in, turn it on, and wait a minute or so where the echo will announce it's ready to be setup. You run the app, and follow the directions. Not bad at all. My impressions so far: The voice is very pleasant. Not sure if it might be a high quality version of Heather. The actual sound of the device is a lot better than I thought it would be. It's somewhat bass heavy but not bad considering it's size. I wouldn't want to use it for critical music listening by any means, but it's just fine for what it is and having music playing in the background or listening to podcasts. The build quality is outstanding, very nice looking device. It comes with a very nice remote. Along with the remote, you get a magnetic platform for the remote that you can stick to any metallic surface and the remote in turn sticks very securely to this little platform. You can also mount the platform for the remote with the included strip of double sided tape. The remote does have a mic on it with a talk button which can be used if you are too far away from the Echo or just don't feel like having to say Alexa. What's very unique about the Echo is that it really can understand you from very far away which is pretty cool. The one big complaint I would have about the Echo is that it's still very young and has a lot of learning to do. It's very limited when compared to Siri or Ok Google but this is something that I'm sure will get better and better as it is updated by Amazon. The updates just happen in the background I believe. It's a cool device to play with for $99 if you are a Prime member but I don't think I would ever pay the suggested retail price of $199. I cannot say enough good things about Apple Accessibility.
Well, yesterday I upgraded from an iPhone 4S to the 6+, and the process was relatively painless, except I lost all of my purchased ring tones when I synced the phone to iTunes on my computer. I called Apple Accessibility, and I talked with a very nice man who helped me retrieve all of my ring tones, and they are now happily on my phone. I have been fortunate in the last 2 years not having to use Apple Accessibility, but they sure were there when I needed them. Cadeaus to Apple. RE: My podcast on the Zoom IQ6 stereo microphone is now up
Yes, this is still a bit of a problem. You don’t gain that much space. It will only work on thin cases. I suppose if they made it much longer and you had a thin case, it could be less secure in that the microphone would not fit snuggly against the bottom of the case or phone. They would have to make many removable pieces to make sure this worked with cases of different thickness. Than'ks Christopher for this additional information. Yes, I know I use my Googlemail address for this list, but use iCloud for other things, and it was that address to which I referred. It's likely there's something going on here I'm not aware of though. If you're using Gmail then the Google servers are marking it as spam and moving them into your junk folder. If you move the message from your junk folder into your in box that should unmark it as spam. You can also do this using the web interface for Gmail or another email client, where you can use the button to indicate the mesage is not junk. Re: Sonos and the Tidal music service
Sieghard is right: unless you have high-end equipment, you may not realize a great benefit if you subscribe to TIDAL. However, one point to their advantage is that the TIDAL app is the only music service app I know of that boasts VoiceOver support in its product description in the App Store. Craig On 12/19/14, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Yes,you can. But if you are using it just on the iPhone and you are happy with Spotify there is probably not much reason to switch. Here is what you do: 1. Go to www.TidalHiFi.com http://www.TidalHiFi.com and sign up for an account if you don't already have one 2. Open the Sonos app on your iphone and go to the music menu, then Settings, then My Services 3. You will see a list of the services you have setup with the title/heading of in Use. Double tap on In Use and then flick right to the beta option. 4. Do a 3-finger swipe up until you get to the end of the listing of services, it's in alphabetical order so Tidal is towards the end. 5. Double tap on Tidal, then on Add Account, say you already have an account and then enter your login email address and password. I have just set it up and I'm about 5 songs into an album I added to the My Music section, the Tidal implementation seems to be very nice on Sonos and while the first song skipped to the next after a few seconds, it's been playing solid and without skips and drop-outs ever since. I just got off the phone with Sonos support to try and figure out why my Deezer account/subscription constantly skips after playing half the song. The tech support guy I talked to was as friendly and helpful as always with Sonos support. I submitted a couple of diagnostics and he said he is going to escalate this to the next level since he doesn't see much in the diagnostic reports which would indicate why it's doing this. For now I'm happy that Tidal seems to be working well and it just may become the music subscription of my choice. Re: Question about navigation in Voice Dream Writer
Thanks Anna. If I used the outline navigation method with my Braille display, does that work well for navigating through the text? It sounds like, from your description, if I use the first method and then flick left with the braille display that my focus would be taken to the next text that I scrolled to. Do I have this right? Also, one other related question, does the app remember your position in each file you read/edit? Here are the basic steps, I assume you are already in the “Get Info” screen: 1. Tab to the Details button and activate by pressing the spacebar. Nothing obvious happens, but it is necessary to do this. 2. Tab a bunch of times until you get back to the Details button and past all the other buttons and until you are, for example, on the Song Name or artist field. Song name is first, and you will hear “Song name, read only”, then if you tab again you hear what is in the song name field and it also is announced as read only. 3. In order to get into this field where you can edit it, you have to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor and then do a left mouse click. This will put you into the edit field at the end of whatever is in the field. You can backspace to erase it, use home to go to the beginning of the field and read with say word or letter by letter and so on. Re: what do these do?
I'm not running one of these new fangled iPhones, so I haven't used these apps myself. Based on the discussions on this list, though blind people are definitely using Pages successfully. I've also heard people reporting mixed success with Numbers. I haven't heard that any blind people are using iMovie or Keynote. I don't miss these apps myself, but I don't really do much word processing on my smart phone. I can't really say if they'd be of use to others. I'd think that would depend on how much you need or want to do any word processing or working with spread sheets on your smart phone. RE: Will Upgrading an iPhone 5 to iOS 8 Cause Sluggish Responsiveness?
The only real slowdown I've noticed is when hitting the home key from within an app and the home screen speaking. There have been a few occasions when I have turned off speech and asked someone to do something and it worked a lot better. For example, reading the list of recently released titles in the BARD Mobile app. It is nearly impossible to add something to the wish list and go back to the list. Without speech, it worked with very little delay. Re: Will Upgrading an iPhone 5 to iOS 8 Cause Sluggish Responsiveness?
The only sluggishness I've found on my iPhone 5 is when returning to the Home Screen. Sometimes, there's a delay of a few seconds before things work again. Safari also freezes up from time to time, but for me, that's nothing new in iOS8. Please refer to www.applevis.com for the current bug list (sorry I don't have the exact link handy). Talking only about sluggishness, though, I can't see a reason not to upgrade. App launching, content scrolling, all that is about the same. From time to time there's a delay as I swipe right through a list, but that's not often and I'm not even sure it's new to iOS8. Re: Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue
I don't like the practice, but I don't see how it could be made illegal. Companies have the right to use proprietary components. Verizon plan price drips
Hi, I just talked to Verizon at 800-922-0204 and they reduced my monthly plan charge ;by $10 per month. I called and asked for this because I heard on some national news broadcast earlier this week that Verizon was doing this, but that customers needed to call and ask for this. I called and got the usual voice prompts. I entered prompt 4 for Other issues. It then asked me why I was calling, and I said New monthly plan. It then gave me 4 options about increasing or decreasing my monthly minutes. I didn't want any of these, and finally started hitting the 0 key repeatedly. I was then transferred to a live person, explained the reason I was calling, and she said she could make the change for me, apparently active on my next billing cycle. I was a little surprised when saying she could do it, she said, It's only reducing it by $10 per month, like that is an amount not worth worrying about. Nevertheless, I reiterated I wanted to save the $10 per month, and she made the change for me. Hm, it seems to me that saving $10 per month is $120 per year, a not insignificant amount of money in my book. Hope someone else can benefit from this, too. Re: Will Upgrading an iPhone 5 to iOS 8 Cause Sluggish Responsiveness?
Hi, There's no reason why a new OS *has* to be slower no, but anyone who has used two operating systems on an iDevice that isn't the latest and greatest will tell you that performance has decreased. Had the OP been talking about going from 8.0 to 8.1.3 for arguments sake then my response would have been different, but he's asking about going from 7.1.2 to 8.1.3. Re: Will Upgrading an iPhone 5 to iOS 8 Cause Sluggish Responsiveness?
OK, fare enough, but you seemed to be making a blanket statement and even admitted that you hadn't moved from IOS 7 to IOS 8 on an iPhone 5 yourself. I've seen people talk about a performance hit on the 4S, and I've mentioned this myself, but I haven't really seen anyone talking about a step backwards in performance on an iPhone 5. I agree every post and opinion doesn't need a long list of caveats, but I do think blanket statements not based on actual experience do need to be put into perspective. Re: what do these do?
These used to be paid apps that Apple is now including with newer iPhones. I think this started with the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 5s. iMovie allows you to record and organize your movie collection. The other three apps are part of Apple's office suite, Pages for documents, Numbers for spread sheets and Keynote for presentations. Note you can easily find more information on all of or any of these apps with a quick search on Google or in the App Store. Re: Update on USB Extension Cable and This Accessory May Not Be Supported Issue
What I was saying is exactly what you're pointing out. Other posters are saying, I think, that Apple puts the chip into their cables while other manufacturers do not, thus causing the error to be triggered. But that would create so many complaints that it would really cause a ruckus. --- Be positive! It is the case that approved Lightning cables have a microchip in them to authenticate that they are Apple approved. This is easy enough to look up on the web with a Google search. The wikipedia page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_%28connector%29 for example says the following: Official Lightning connectors contain an authentication chip that makes it difficult for third-party manufacturers to produce compatible accessories without being approved by Apple. I've seen this discussed on this list multiple times. I suspect the only reason it doesn't come up more often is because most people are probably using the cable that came with their Apple device or they're getting an Apple approved cable. I have no idea how many complaints Apple gets, but I'm sure it's easy for them to turn them away and just let those people know they need an Apple approved cable. Robin, this is what I was referring to a couple of days ago. I will do nothing different and suddenly some of the sounds that indicate opening, closing, of an app or reply menu in email will be gone. I can find nothing to start it and I have no control when the sounds reappear. I have noted, however, that a reboot may but may not help. That is why I asked if Apple had control of the sounds. Hi Lisa, Well, I checked on this price reduction that I just told you about. Now I'm pretty excited. They gave me $10 off our data plan as well as another $15 off one of our lines because it is out of contract meaning that is eligible for an upgrade. Re: playing WMA audio book files from Overdrive on Iphones

Dan Beaver iPhone, iPod and iPad don't support WMA files. I know an article which introduces two methods on how to import WMA to iTunes and then transfer WMA to iPhone/iPod/iPad via iTunes at: http://www.faasoft.com/articles/wma-to-itunes-to-play-wma-on-iphone-ipad-ipod.html Method One: Import WMA to iTunes for Windows Launch iTunes, and then click File Add File to Library to open WMA files that you want to import. Then a window will pop up as clearly. Just click Convert to convert WMA to iTunes M4A format. Once the conversion is done, you can play WMA files in iTunes or import WMA to iPhone, iPad and iPod. Method Two: Add WMA to iTunes for Mac For Mac users, the widely used solution is to convert WMA to iTunes more compatible formats like MP3, M4A, AAC, etc with special WMA to iTunes Converter. Faasoft's great WMA to iTunes Converter is the best one of them, which enables to convert WMA to iTunes with fast speed and high quality. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: how to copy a phone number
Depends where it is. I normally copy it from an email or text by using the text selection commands, then the Edit menu will appear in the rotor. Failing that, get VoiceOver to say the number, and quickly perform a copy last spoken phrase to clipboard command by tapping three fingers four times. Finally, quite often, you can have iOS make a new contact from a number, in the Phone or Messages apps especially. Re: Sending Mail When Away From Home
This sounds like a limitation of your email provider. When I had a local provider, we had the same problem for some years, until they eventually enabled the feature. The first step would be to go to your provider's website, or call their support number, and double check that all your SMTP settings are correct. If they are, ask if the provider allows for sending email away from your home network. If they don't, consider switching to a more modern, widely supported service such as gmail.com, outlook.com, or, my personal favorite, iCloud.com. Recommendations for a New Bank?
Hi all, Sorry if you're getting this multiple times, I'm sending it to the three lists I'm on. I need a new bank. I currently use TD Bank, and their site and app are accessible enough. The problems are: 1. I can only view six months of account history, and the PDF statements they provide for longer history appear to be inaccessible. 2. Their app logs you out after you close it, even if you only leave it for a minute. The app also fails to work with braille screen input, so you can't use that to type your password, and does not support Touch ID. 3. When I try to use the TD Bank website on the Mac, Safari crashes. It has done this for years, and every time I ask TD Bank support about it, I get a different answer. No one can offer a fix, though. What I'm looking for is something better. Fully accessible, obviously, but also offering accessible statements, a more modern and robust iOS app, etc. Having a bank card with raised letters on one side wouldn't hurt either. :) I'd love to switch to Simple, but they still haven't opened new account creation yet, plus they don't support any sort of business account, which I'd need. Re: newby with problems
Do you have the typing mode set to touch typing? That way when you touch a number or letter and then lift your finger it is entered. Much faster than double tapping every time. You could also set up your fingerprint. It takes some patience to get that set up because it takes its sweet time deciding it has enough of your fingerprint to know it is you, which is a good thing. still can't use the Workflow app
Version 1.1 of the Workflow app was released today, and one of its new features was VoiceOver compatibility. On my 5S running 8.1.3, however, I don't notice any difference, and I can't get the app to work. When I first run it, I must activate the Get Started button. Then I am required to create a workflow to create an animated gif. There is one action, Take Photo, which I can drag, favorite or activate. There are two tabs, Action and Workflow, but changing tabs doesn't do much to the screen. There are two pages, but changing pages doesn't do anything. Can anybody suggest what I'm missing, or if this can't work with anything below a 6? -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: Braille in more than one language
I hesitated to upgrade to 8.1.3 because of this bug. I don't write in multiple languages often, but when I do I appreciate the iOS capability to switch to the braille code for French or Spanish. I cann't replicate Ann's problem. I'm using a Braille Sense U2 Mini, so perhaps that's the difference, but using contracted braille input and output, when I switch to French, I still write and read French Abrégé, and I can write and read accent marks, at least the one I tried worked as it should have worked. Re: virus apple accessibility team
Hi, Sounds like your experience with Apple accessibility was a good one. Can you send the number you called? Thanks, Kim Sent from my iPhone On Feb 10, 2015, at 3:38 PM, Zoe Fiogkos fiog...@rogers.com wrote: Good evening fellow listers, Today while having my morning coffee, I picked up my iPhone (which by the way is a 6 plus running the latest ios) to watch “days of our lives” like I do every day. I opened safari, the page I usually watch the show on, and it would not let me click to watch the video. A pop up appeared saying virus detected ios security or something to that affect. I didn’t know how to get out of this pop-up. The background was gray and this pop-up in the middle my only choice was an ok button. Panicking I clicked it and it took me to some other website. Quickly coming to my senses I clicked home button and got out of there. However I thought when I click on safari again it will take me to the same website. I went into safari and clicked pages and clicked close on that website. I lost voiceover and had to do a hard reset because nothing on the phone worked. When I restarted the phone everything seemed fine. So smart me said let me try this again. I went back to the website and I saw where I usually click to watch the video now voiceover was saying click to close add and continue, so sounded logical and I clicked it, oh no, now we have a new problem. Like before a pop-up appeared saying safari security major issue please contact apple support at 1877-203-4097 or I think that’s the number. Automatically my wheels in my little brain began to work and I thought something isn’t right. Since I’m a voiceover user I thought I better call apple accessibility and make sure that I’m actually speaking to someone from apple, and not any tom, dick, or harry. I called apple accessibility at the number that you wonderful people on these lists have provided, (by the way thanks for that). They were wonderful, patient, and absolutely a pleasure to deal with. The website apparently has been hacked and the pop-up with the phone number is a scam to get you to call them so they can ask you for all your personal information. At least that’s what the teck thought. He told me to stay away from that website for a few days in hopes that they get it sorted it out, and of course reminded me to never call a number that says they are apple support but to always call the numbers I know to be true. In speaking with the teck I told him about some problems I’m having reading my Greek recipes on the mac using the rss readers and he passed me over to a mac tech that is familiar with voiceover and we played around with the mac for a while. I’m so impressed with the people I spoke to today. Just wanted to let you all know about my strange experience and my wonderful experience with apple accessibility. I feel I should post this to all the lists I belong to that deal with apple products so people can read about my experience and not make the same mistakes I did. So please accept my appologies if you get this more then once. Have a great evening Zoe -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: phone
It's not really something they can fix, though. Siri has to stop listening at some point, and so it figures when you pause for a bit, you're done. If it didn't have this logic, it could keep listening forever. There are two things you can do: * When Siri is listening and you need it to stop, such as with a lot of background noise, do a two-finger double tap. * To be able to pause, just hold the Home Button down the entire time you're speaking. If you are holding it once Siri activates, it becomes sort of a push to talk button. Pause as long as you like, and Siri will wait until that button is released. Note that the second item can be a source of frustration.. If you're holding the button down too long, when you release it, Siri could think you just issued a very short command. This is why Siri sometimes seems to stop listening almost immediately. It's a matter of practice to get the timing down right, but again, if long pauses are your problem, yo might find this feature quite helpful. As to the phone keypad not appearing, could you explain that more? I haven't seen it happen yet here. If you leave the Phone app, of course the keypad will disappear, but there's a tap to return to call item in your Status Bar while you're in a call that will bring it back. Again, it would help to provide more details on just what the problem is. On Feb 10, 2015, at 2:03 PM, Ioana Gandrabur igandra...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I did not have the problem with the keyboard not coming up. Not ideal but, like I said, never really had this problem. About Siri, I do get frustrated with it cutting me off at times before I'm done talking to it. Just try again and maybe avoid making too long pauses in your speech. I think it's an irritating bug and hope they will fix this.I think I saw this also with my husband's phone and he does not use VO so it's not related to accessibility. Re: iPhone not backing up to iCloud
Hello Feliciano G, You need to go through the Settings iCloud Storage Backup. Under the Backup heading, slide the iCloud Backup to green. There is a line called “Backup Now” that you can click, but it will only work if you: 1) Have the iPhone on WiFi. 2) Have the iPhone plugged in to the charger/outlet. 3) Have the iPhone locked (where the screen is black). Hi all, Sorry you got flooded with a bunch of messages from me in the last couple hours. These are ones I sent anywhere from a few hours to a day or two ago. I emailed the list recently, saying that my emails were sometimes getting delayed, and this is what I meant. If a moderator could tell me what is going on, assuming they know, that would be great. A moderator on another list said that Google randomly flagged my messages as spam, and I'm wondering if the same thing happened here? Why adding mail accounts to my Mac would cause that, I don't know, but that's the only thing that changed recently. I am using Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit and the latest Jaws 16 update. As I said before, I can still use Control+F to go to the search library field, tabbing from there I get the same announcement of the radio buttons like Music, Movies etc. and this section still ends with “More”. After “More” I get the usual 3 radio buttons, “My Music”, “Playlists” and “iTunes Store”. Then I get to a button which still is correctly identified as “Songs” and that is where it needs to be in order for the column browser to work. I can activate the button and tab into the list of items, however, all of them (Songs, Albums, Artists, Composers and Genres) are only read by Jaws as “button”. If I put it on Songs, the first button in that list, I can tab and I get 4 items which are only announced as “Button” as well. I realized that the first 3 are my columns (Genre, Artist and Album) and the fourth is the song list view. I can arrow down in these as before and items are filtered, but of course Jaws reads only “Button” anywhere you are and it’s very bag. All I can suggest at this point is to once again flood accessibil...@apple.com with emails letting them know how useless iTunes currently is. It may also be of use to inform the maker of whichever screenreader you use as this may be a fix required on their side. I do, however, find it unfortunate that something like this isn’t tested by Apple so it could be caught before a public release and either it could be fixed or an appropriate warning could be displayed advising screenreader users that there are problems in the new update and to stick with the previous one for the time being. I haven’t decided yet whether I want to downgrade, a Windows Restore would of course be the simplest solution, but I also installed a new printer since the update and while reinstalling it wouldn’t be such a big deal, I might just wait to see if Apple will release an update to fix this or if Freedom Scientific can come up with a solution so Jaws once again reads all it should read. I fortunately don’t really use iTunes on a daily bases so waiting for another update might be OK for me. Re: still can't use the Workflow app
The easiest wy is to find the action in the middle of the screen, and swipe a finger down until you hear add to workflow. Double tap, and that should do it. Once the update reaches me, I'll do a podcast for AppleVis on this. I helped beta test it, so I know this new version quite well and can say that, at least for me, VoiceOver was working well overall. Query about VoiceOver related sounders going silent
Hi, I’m running the most current version of iOS8 on an iPhone 6Plus and recently I’ve experienced a few incidents where VoiceOver related sounds on my device have gone silent. by that I mean that voiceOver is still speaking but the related sounds VoiceOver uses to communicate things such as the knocking type sound when one reaches the bottom of a screen and the like simply stop working. This is easily remedied by rebooting the phone and someone else I know indicated that for them turning voiceOver off and then on again sometimes does the trick for them. I’m just inquiring if this is an issue others have encountered or if anyone knows if it’s an issue Apple knows about before I go reporting it. Sadly I cannot seem to nail down any precursor or event that precipitates this behavior nor can I make it occur at will. Thanks for any and all insights shared regarding this. Re: Apple turning off sounds?
The only sounds I've found to sometimes vanish are the two tones that signify an alert, as you described, and some sounds when swiping right or left with one finger. I find that restarting VoiceOver puts things back to normal. I believe this is a bug, not a random muting or anything, since it only affects certain sounds and is only sometimes present. I'd also suggest that it might be the way you're doing the gesture. I'm not slamming you in any way - I've used iOS for over four years, and I *still* can't reliably select or un-select. Sometimes it doesn't work, sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it selects way more than I wanted. I've emailed Apple Accessibility to ask if they would consider changing from a pinch gesture to a two-finger swipe left/right, as that would be much more reliable and easy to perform. Anyway, keep at it, and install that update. Sorry I can't offer anything more helpful. Re: reading bookshare books
I love the Amy voice from Ivona in Voice Dream. She costs 4.99 extra, but well worth it if you like British accents. James from NeoSpeech is very good for an American male voice at 2.99. Heather is good, but I prefer Laura for an American female voice from Acapella at I think 1.99. Voices are terribly subjective. You can hear a sample of the voices before you buy them in Voice Dream. But, Voice Dream is the best app on the market for reading all kinds of text based files. Also great for audio books that are MP3 files. Re: virus apple accessibility team
Hello, the number for Apple accessibility is 1-877-204-3930. On Feb 10, 2015, at 8:29 PM, Kim Samco ksa...@me.com wrote: Hi, Sounds like your experience with Apple accessibility was a good one. What I do is a double tap and hold with one finger then you will be given the options to call FaceTime add to contacts etc. If the phone number is on a text message, you want to select the message then turn the rotor to links then swipe down to the phone number and do the same as I mentioned. RE: Sonos and the Tidal music service
Hi Craig, I don't think I noticed that note about Voiceover support for the Tidal app. One thing I would say, however, is that the Deezer app is just accessible. Also, my wife is from the Philippines and we were looking for artists from there. Deezer has a ton of Filipino artists, Tidal had very little. I think Deezer actually beats most when it comes to actual availability of music, I read they have way more than Spotify. It is just too bad that for some reason I can't get my Deezer subscription to play via my Sonos system. I can play it and one song may play OK, but then just about every other song plays for a minute or so, then if I have the Sonos app open Voiceover says something to the effect that the connection to Deezer was lost. The music then continues to play for another 40 or 50 seconds (probably this is buffered) and then the song stop and the next song starts playing. I have spend a lot of time with Sonos level 2 support to try and figure out what causes this with no success. If I use the Deezer app on my iPhone I can play for hours without a single hiccup and it can't be a bandwidth issue since I have a pretty fast connection and also because Tidal which is probably using more bandwidth than Deezer plays just fine without any problems. Spotify also had no such problems and I can play Tune In stations via Sonos just fine, it's just Deezer that has this problem and that really is too bad since otherwise it would be my service of choice. RE: still can't use the Workflow app
Hi Alex, A podcast would be nice, when I read about Voiceover improvements I tried to use the app for the first time today (I picked it up a while ago when it was on sale) and I didn’t really get far and didn’t have the time to really play with it and maybe read some help files online. I helped beta test it, so I know this new version quite well and can say that, at least for me, VoiceOver was working well overall. U.S. Carriers, You'll Have to Unlock Those Phones
Hello All, I am delighted to post the following cNet News article for your consideration. The URL to the original article is at the bottom of the text. Mark U.S. carriers, you'll have to unlock those phones Starting now, it will be much easier for people to jump from one carrier to another and take their smartphone with them. by Don Reisinger The days of carriers locking down devices to keep customers in place are officially dead. Starting now, all US carriers must comply with requests from postpaid and prepaid customers to unlock their devices, as long as certain parameters are met. The industry group CTIA had committed last year to have all wireless carriers adhering to the regulation by February 11, 2015. The move follows from President Obama last year signing into law the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which overruled a controversial 2012 decision by the Library of Congress. The debate over phone unlocking has come a long way in just a few short years. Unlocking a phone allows owners to put the device on whatever carrier network they choose. For years, carriers have locked down devices, allowing them only to connect to their own networks. The move was designed to keep customers close and not see them stray to other carriers. We are pleased the FCC acknowledged the participating wireless carriers met the deadlines to unlock their customers' devices per the Consumer Code for Wireless Service, said Scott Bergmann, the CTIA's vice president for regulatory affairs, in a statement. We also remind consumers that an unlocked device does not necessarily mean an interoperable one since different carriers use different technologies and spectrum bands. For customers, the inability to unlock handsets had been a nuisance. Many consumers, seeking better network coverage or data plan pricing, have wanted to be able to move to a different network without having to buy a new device. An unlocked handset would allow that interchange between, say, ATT and T-Mobile networks. Locked devices force customers to stick with their carrier networks and if they decide to switch, to buy a new device on the other carrier. In 2013, the issue of unlocking hitting a tipping point when the Libary of Congress held that the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) banned American consumers from unlocking their devices without the consent of their carriers. Critics took issue with the ruling, which actually came down in 2012 but went into effect in 2013. Then in August 2014 came the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, which effectively made unlocking legal again. Under the CTIA's Consumer Code for Wireless Service that went into effect Wednesday, carriers will have no choice but to remove locks on devices owned by both postpaid and prepaid wireless users. On the postpaid side, carriers must unlock devices after a customer in good standing has fulfilled postpaid service contract, device financing plan, or payment of applicable early termination fee. In other words, those subscribers who get smartphones for less by paying a subsidy at the beginning and paying in full over the life of a contract, must have satisfied that payment covenant before they can be allowed to unlock their device. On the prepaid side, things are bit simpler: carriers must, upon request, unlock a handset no later than one year after initial activation. All unlocking, regardless of the type of customer, must be completed within two days of a request, and carriers are now required to inform consumers of their policies. Carriers that lock devices will clearly notify customers that their devices are eligible for unlocking at the time when their devices are eligible for unlocking or automatically unlock devices remotely when devices are eligible for unlocking, without additional fee, the code reads. Carriers reserve the right to charge non-customers/non-former-customers with a reasonable fee for unlocking requests. Notice to prepaid customers may occur at point of sale, at the time of eligibility, or through a clear and concise statement of policy on the carrier's website. http://www.cnet.com/news/new-regulation-requires-us-carriers-to-unlock-user- phones/?tag=nl.e703s_cid=e703ttag=e703ftag=CAD090e536 -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Query about VoiceOver related sounders going silent
Hi, Thank you for replying. My apologies as I might have missed your earlier message. As of this writing I’ve not encountered a situation where a reboot didn’t bring the sounds back. It is distressing to hear that this sometimes doesn’t rectify the problem. I’m wondering if this is unique to iPhone 6 and 6Plus models or if others with older models or even iPads and the like have witnessed this behavior as well. Have you contacted Apple accessibility either via phone or through email to inquire about this? I have that on my Friday to do list but thought I’d ask on list to see if anyone could corroborate the problem first before inquiring of them. Problems Selecting Text In E-mail
Hello Everyone, The other day, I was in an E-mail that I had received, trying to select some text, and I found that, in part of the message, the text simply would not select. I wanted to select by line. I set the rotor to line. I then placed two fingers on the screen and move them apart and nothing happened. In part of the message this did work but in another part it did not, even after going out of mail and going back in. Is this a bug or is some text just unselectable for some reason? Any suggestions? I am running IOS 8.1.1 on a iPhone 4S. Thanks, Scott Duck -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. All new members to the this list are moderated by default. Re: TapTapSee
I would agree with this, but, be aware, when the start up money runs out you will probably have to pay for this service too. I don't have a problem with companies charging for these apps but it can be a financial burden on some of us. Fwd: Voice Dream Purchased voices not Downloading to New Restored iPhone 6
I am forwarding the response I received from Winston Chen, the developer of voice dream, on this issue. Alan Lemly Sent from my iPhone Begin forwarded message: From: Winston Chen wins...@voicedream.com Date: February 11, 2015 at 11:18:54 PM CST To: Alan Lemly wale...@gmail.com Subject: Re: Voice Dream Purchased voices not Downloading to New Restored iPhone 6 Hi, Thanks for reaching out. The voices files are hosted on Amazon. I have heard of these issues, and a few times I ran into them myself. It’s very strange to me. But in all cases, the problems are results a few days later or on a different network. If this is not the case, I would like to find out. In the next update, we’re moving to a different type of hosting service on Amazon. I hope it’ll improve things. Best, Winston. On Feb 11, 2015, at 6:45 PM, Alan Lemly wale...@gmail.com wrote: Hello List, I saw a post on the macvisionaries list from a user who recently upgraded his iPhone 4S to a new 64GB iPhone 6 who keeps getting the below error message when he tries to re-download his purchased Voice Dream voices: Voice downloading failed. Please try again when you have a good network connection. He has tried downloading multiple times on different networks all with strong wifi signals but the error keeps recurring. Since I recently got a new 128GB iPhone 6 and restored a backup of my iPhone 5, I thought I better go fetch some of my purchased Voice Dream voices too and lo and behold got the same error message. Would one of you many Voice Dream Reader users mind trying to download a purchased voice to help determine if this is a Voice Dream network problem? I'm not a big believer in coincidences and it seems odd that both of us experiencing this problem have new high capacity iPhone 6's that were restored from other iPhones. I agree that you wouldn't think that was related to our problem but who knows. I was able to successfully add a new book from Bookshare using Voice Dream after getting the above voice download error message for whatever that's worth. Thanks in advance.
