It sounds like the troublesome PC has XP firewall enabled (although it
doesn't explain the unable to resolve host error).

Hi,
After looking through the FAQs and searching the mailing list, I have

I have installed RealVNC on all of my Computers at home without any

My latest computer on the network (a WinXP laptop) Is able to remote control
every other PC on the network, but no other PC is able to remote control it.

I have never had difficulty setting this up before, the basic automatic
default install and config normally works. None of my other PCs have any
difficulty with 2 way remote control. All devices are behind the same router,
some are wireless and some are not, but for some reason this little baby won't
play ball.

I can ping it by name and IP Address, but I keep getting a timeout error or an
unable to resolve host by name error, whenever I try to remote control the
machine from a viewer elsewhere in the house. When I use the troublesome PC to
remote control another PC it is fine. The only way I can get another PC to
remote control the problem machine is by initiating the connection from "add
client" which brings up the remote control window on the desired PC.

Not sure what is going wrong here, or what I'm missing. Can anyone help?

RE: VNC Connection Error

2007-05-24 Thread James Weatherall
Zhang Wei,

It sounds like you're using a VNC Free Edition viewer to try to connect to a
VNC Enterprise Edition server that is configured with encryption always on.
VNC Free Edition viewers don't support encrypted sessions.

Hi Paul,

Yes, my comments apply only when running VNC server in Service-Mode.

The VNC distribution is already open-source (see

2007-04-11 Thread Paul Kaplan
I guess my question about workaround was related to running VNC as a service
not a program. Can one workaround the Fast User Switching problem w/ VNC
running as a service.

Regarding alternative VNC servers I was thinking of open source options such
as OpenVNC.

RE: vnc connection to restricted XP accounts

2007-04-11 Thread James Weatherall
Paul,

The workaround for VNC Free Edition is to log out the current user before
logging on another one, so that the console session is always session zero.

RealVNC is the company name and VNC the product, so I'm not sure what you
mean by "Is the problem unique to RealVNC...". If you mean "Do VNC
Enterprise & Personal Editions handle Fast User Switching?" then the answer
is yes, they do!

During installation, have you ticked each of the boxes which refer to the VNC
Server System Service? Have you set up an authentication password?

If not, uninstall and reinstall the VNC server as a service, set up a password
and reboot the machine and check that it has been registered and started as a
system service.

Re: VNC Connection Over SSH Problem

2006-11-15 Thread Grant Booth
Here's the final solution to my VNC over SSH Problem (I use this to support my
Father since he is just beginning to use a computer)

On remote machine enter this command:
ssh -l username -R:5900:localhost:5900:address.no-ip.com
note: address.no-ip.com is my ip address assigned to a dynamic DNS service for
the connection of the local viewing machine.

On Viewing machine enter this command:
ssh -p 5900 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
note: The cursor will hang but is connected; ctr+c will abort the connection if
you wish

On viewing machine enter this command in new terminal:
vncviwer localhost::5900

Ideally to spead things up, create icons on the two computers desktops to
facilitate a connection. Here are the steps:

To Setup quick lauch on remote computers desktop (GNome Desktop)
1. Rt click desk top and create launcher
2. for command use: xterm -e "ssh -l username
-R:5900:localhost:5900:my-address.no-ip.com"
To setup quick launch on viewer (GNome Desktop)
1. Rt click desktop and create laucher
2. for command use: xterm -e "ssh -p 5900 [EMAIL PROTECTED]"
3. Rt click desktop and create launcher
4. for command use: xterm -e "vncviwer localhost::5900"

Of course, before initiating an SSH connection, I copied (SCP) a SSH public DSA
key from the the remote to the viewer computer (there are plenty of
instructions online already for setting up SSH keys so I won't rehash.) I used
a blank passphrase for the remote computer to make it easier when connecting
and supporting that all important friend or family member. I know this isn't

The way this looks from here, the connection stays in your machine - i.e. your
machine (192.168.1.107) connects to your machine (again 192.168.1.107) using
ssh through a loopback port forwarding tunnel.

Not sure, but could this be an IP/port conflict. What happens when you
stagger the port Nos (i.e. vnc server on 5900 and vnc viewer on 5901)?

I am assuming that WinXP box has a different IP address, hence no conflict.

Hi,

According to Microsoft's documentation, this mean's that:
"An established connection was aborted by the software in your host
machine."

This suggests that there is a problem with the computer on which you're
seeing this error.

SL,

If you have simply installed VNC and allowed it to register the VNC Server
as normal, and not changed the service's startup settings, then it should
work as expected.

Which version of VNC Server are you using?

What is the error you get when you "can't connect"?

That's NOT how a "service" is supposed to work. Anything that is running as

In the Authentication page of the Options dialogue, do you have "Prompt

Hello, everyone

I installed VNC in my xp machine (192.168.50.38) and Windows 2003 Server (

192.168.50.112 10.0.0.112). I enabled ip_forward on linux machine. So all
the machines can ping each other.

I can run vncviewer from linux machine to access my server (10.0.0.2)

I can run vncviewer from xp machine to access linux machine.

But I couldn't access my server(10.0.0.2) from xp client (192.168.50.38). In
fact I can ping server from xp client. So I lost sences.

Anybody could give me some ideas?

Re: VNC connection closed w/ error 10055

2005-10-03 Thread Collier Hill
ZoneAlarm was completely removed (no change in behavior)
Also to confirm, RealVNC was running as a service and no screen saver
enabled.
RealVNC seems to have had no issues interacting with desktop. Client
functioned
perfectly for a short period of time (1-5 minutes). Longer, if I didn't
actually do anything
on the remote machine and just let the connection sit idle.
Also, a number of other things were tried.
 Final resolution:
I ended up uninstalling RealVNC and installing TightVNC. Was able to
connect
from Win XP systems and remote control Win 2000 system with no issues.
So, it looke like TightVNC will be my solution. Thanks to everyone for all
the
suggestions and assistance.

Re: VNC connection closed w/ error 10055

2005-09-29 Thread Collier Hill
James,
When i run a netstat -an on the client I get 7 "established" connections.
one of which is vnc:
TCP :3307 :5900 ESTABLISHED
netstat -an on the vnc server machine gives me 3 "established" connections
with one vnc:
TCP :5900 :3307 ESTABLISHED
Hard to believe that 7 and 3 established connections respectively, could
cause memory allocation or resource management problems.

As far as firewalls are concerned, I have the Zone Labs firewall installed,
but have it disabled so as not to interfere with VNC. In addition, virus
scans show my system to be clean.
Once again, Thanks for any input.

Win XP firewall is not enabled. However, at your suggestion, I added the VNC
service to the firewall definition.
 Still getting same behavior.

RE: VNC connection closed w/ error 10055

2005-09-28 Thread James Weatherall
Collier,

Error 10055 normally means that there are too many connections open on
either the server or viewer machine, meaning that the OS can't allocate
enough memory to manage them all. Try running netstat -an on both the
server and viewer when you see this error & check how many "established"
connections there are to other systems.

According to a quick Google search, there are some viruses that can cause
this error to appear, a Windows 95 resource leak that can, and it's also
possible that third-party firewalling software might cause similar issues if
it has memory leaks, or if it exposes bugs in the OS

Do you have the XP firewall enabled? If so, try disabling it. Also, have you
tried specifically allowing the VNC executeable in the firewall, even if
disabled?

I have seen a couple of references to this issue in previous posts, but see
no resolution posted. So, here is my problem.
 configuration:
VNC Server 4.1.1 for Windows on Windows 2000 Pro
VNC Client 4.1.1 for Windows on Windows XP Pro
I start the VNC client on XP and successfully authenticate and connect to
the VNC server. The connection seems to function properly for 1 - 5 minutes.
Then the connection is automatically closed with the following error
message:
 VNC Viewer : Question
Unable to wait for socket data: An operation on a socket could not be
performed because the system lacked sufficient buffer space or because a
queue was full. (10055)
Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to ? Yes/No
Any attempts to click "Yes" just porduce the same error message. If I say
"No", I can reconnect and get the exact same behavior.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Well, I don't know a LOT about Solaris, only that it's a Unix variant. I did

How do I determine if the font server is running?

Two things:
1) I don't know if maybe it's a permissions issue where VNC can't access the
font server.
2) *IS* the font server running on the Solaris box?

I'm afraid I don't know much about Solaris, so I can't say for sure, but I
think it is similar enough to linux that it's using something similar. You
may need to explicitly give VNC access to the font-server. You might want to
compare the settings on the production servers with this new server as there
seems to be multiple problems... as inticated by the errors about
/usr/openwin/bin/xrdb.

Have you definitely got a font server running on port 7100? Try taking

Do either of them exist? If they do, do they have suitable permissions
(world readable might be good). What about the directory they are in?

BTW you are running a very old version (both of VNC in general and
tightVNC server) - I use the binaries from RealVNC on Solaris 8 & 9
(Blade 1500s) and they work fine.

RE: VNC connection closed unexpectedly

2005-09-27 Thread John Aldrich

Re: VNC connection lost when initiating telnet session quits- solution!

Good luck...
Whatever the reason, the csh does seem to solve the problem for me at
the present time.

Re: VNC connection lost when initiating telnet session quits- solution!

2005-04-29 Thread Dr Robert Young
Launching the vncserver from the csh seems to work, and the apps appear
to remain alive after the telnet session is exited.

# csh
ultra10# /usr/local/bin/vncserver
New 'ultra10:1 (root)' desktop is ultra10:1
Starting applications specified in //.vnc/xstartup
Log file is //.vnc/ultra10:1.log
ultra10#
When the telnet connection is now broken, the vncserver and its apps
continue to operate normally. Apparently the 'C' shell is insulating
the programs, while the /sbin/sh does not.

Re: VNC connection lost when initiating telnet session quits

2005-04-29 Thread Audsin dev
Hi

Iam using Fedora Core 1 with tight vnc. When i try
nohup vncserver &, it seems to work fine. That is, i
log in using ssh and start the vncserver (nohup
vncserver &)in my remote comp and close the ssh. Now i
login using the windows vnc-client and now iam able to
view the gnome desktop as well as my apps (i.e windows
manager is working).

Probably in Solaris, nohup does not insulate the
process from the SIGTERM signal. If that is the case
why is the Xvnc not killed and only windows manager
refuses to start. Any light on this?

Re: VNC connection lost when initiating telnet session quits

2005-04-29 Thread Dr Robert Young
I already tried that. Still have same problem when log out
occurs...apps die .

Even tried "nohup" inside xstartup file in front of xterm, vncconfig
lines to see if that made a difference.it did not.

In Solaris, nohup does not insulate the command from the SIGTERM

   /usr/bin/nohup
Processes run by /usr/bin/nohup are immune to SIGHUP
  (hangup) and SIGQUIT (quit) signals.

The nohup utility does not arrange to make processes immune
  to a SIGTERM (terminate) signal

Now whether that is pointing to the cause or not is anyone's guess..

As suspected, the Xvnc server is there, but vxcconfig and the xterm
which had both been started in the Xvnc server session are missing.

The question is why?
I do not need ssh for this system as it is already behind a full
firewall, and my "viewing" of it is also contained completely behind
the firewall ( mostly, it is for testing and sits in a back room
unattended). I am mimicing a setup at a remote site, and when viewing
the remote location ( for real 'work') I will be going through a VPN.

When you say the person who "fixed" the problem before is no longer

I first used VNC about 6 months ago accessing a remote site. There, on

Now I am trying to install it on a local box with Solaris 2.7, and I

Hence my inquiry.

It doesn't see RFB on "telent 127.0.0.1 5900"?

are the VncOptions Set to listen on port 5900?

It does sound like something is blocking vnc from listening on this port.

Did you try this with anti-vir disabled, windows firewall disabled, etc?

Connection refused usually means that it cannot reach the port.

SO, a couple things to try:

When at home (the server end):
go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/
and scan for 5900

If this says closed, then it is being blocked at your router or your pc.

First make sure the router has a port forward set-up
Second double check the xp firewall
third if you are running any type of antivirus shut it completely
down, along with any other "security" tools you have.

As you perform these steps keep checking the status of 5900 from the
web page. At some point you will find your culprit.

If it says success on the web page, try again from work if it is
blocked then work may be blocking otraffic, the only way to verify
would be to try from another remote location.

Re: VNC connection through VPN and wireless problem

Heya. Sorry for the late reply. Here's another possibility:
different Ethernet NIC's can come with different MTU sizes. Due to
the IPSEC wrapping of your packets in a VPN, an otherwise functional
MTU size can be exceeded, and packets get fragmented leading to
uncertain behavior in VPN settings.
Which is all to say...try reducing the MTU size on your
wireless NIC to that if your wired NIC and see if it helps. Good
luck!

RE: VNC connection through VPN and wireless problem

2004-02-12 Thread Seak, Teng-Fong
"failure to connect" could mean that the port isn't reachable. Could you ping
your work desktop from your laptop? Make sure your VPN client is also encrypting your
wireless connection.

Jonathan,

look at these people - they provide an excellent way to get at systems that
connect to the net via allocated (hence dynamic) IP addresses:
http://www.no-ip.com - works for me!

I think they will answer your problem

Re: VNC Connection via HotSpots with McAfee Firewall

2003-11-19 Thread Joe Kexel
You could open the port completely, and trust VNC and a very, very, very
good password.

Or, you could configure a SSH server on your network and connect with the
tunnel (with port forwarding). It would provide encryption and another set
of passwords for connection.

The other option is to replace the router with a full linux/bsd firewall
where you can selectively open ports. And not the crude functionality of
most commercial software firewalls or basic routers. Also, it can be the
SSH server, so you could use the SSH port forwarding.

These are summary solutions, if any sound interesting I can go into more
detail.

You have no -httpd option at all.

I think you mix some things:

the rfb protocol runs at port 5906, the webserver runs at port 5806. Hence
browse to http://myhost:5806.

On the other side, the browser is only a single binary that does not need
any customization. Just dump it somewhere (in the path, like
/usr/local/bin/vncviewer), give it execute rights and `vncviewer myhost:6`
boosts you away.

Not a useless response at all. That is the response of the RFB server.
It's like connecting to port 22 and getting an SSH banner.

What does your VNC log say? Are you running any kind of firewall that
might prevent connections? Do a "ps -wwwaux | grep vnc" and verify the
-httpd option is being set correctly.

Thanks for the reply William.

I've tried to connect to http://myhost:5806 and after about a minute I get
an error message about "Cannot find server".
To avoid issues with the DNS I've also used the URL in the connection to the
host like
http://123.456.789.0:5806 with no success.

I have a web server running om myhost and I can connect to http://myhost:80
with no problems.
Again if I connect to http://myhost:5906, at least it respond back with 'RFB
003.003'.
Useless, but a response never the less.

I'm a bit lost here

Cheers,
Frits.

You are missing the documentation:
http://www.realvnc.com/javavncviewer.html

"The server listens for HTTP connections on port 5800+display number. So
to view display 2 on machine 'snoopy', you would point your web browser
at:
http://snoopy:5802/
The applet will prompt you for your password, and should then display the
desktop."

You need to connect to http://myhost:5806.

RE: vnc connection forwarded problem

2003-01-26 Thread LUPTAK,MIROSLAV (HP-Slovakia,ex1)
Hello, Mauricio.

I suppose the vncserver on your home win98 runs on the default port.

You should login with the f-secure client from win98_work to the linux and
forward local port 5901 to win98:5900 and local port 5801 to win98:5800. I
do not have f-secure here, but in the Unix ssh jargoon this would be like
"ssh -L5901:win98:5900 -L5801:win98:5800 linux". You need to translate the
"-L5901:win98:5900 -L5801:win98:5800" to the f-secure settings on
win98_work.

Now poit your Iexplorer on the win98_work to http://127.0.0.1:5801/

Miro

Sounds like you have the "Default" password set different than the
"User" password. Use the "Show Default Properties" menu item to change
them to be the same. It might be best to go into the registry and
remove the keys in the user's hive so that only the defaults will be
used. Also be sure you are running WinVNC as a service (which since you
get Authentication Failed it sounds like you are).

Re: [VNC] connection closed

2002-05-26 Thread Alex K. Angelopoulos

Most likely, this is an issue with how password setup is done in VNC. Here's a
way to make sure that the password configuration is done correctly.

The following method was actually a recipe that Floyd Russell developed for
making sure that VNC runs correctly on Win2K servers with Terminal Services; in
general, it seems to be the best method to use with NT 4, Win2K, XP, and .NET in
any flavor. To my knowledge, it has always made this work correctly if done
with a clean install of VNC.

"1. Install VNC
2. Install VNC Service
3. Start->Programs->VNC->Run WinVNC(AppMode)
4. Enter your password, this is for the current user.
5. Start->Programs->VNC->Administrative Tools->Show Default Settings
6. Enter your password, this is for the local machine
7. Close WinVNC
8. Start WinVNC Service
You may need to start the service helper if you want to modify settings of
the winvnc instance running. This problem is due to the way Terminal
Services operates, since you are working in a virtual desktop."
