Re: Eudora to Thunderbird

2009-11-21 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Had another go late last night. I had been making a csv file of
nicknames in Eudora to import into Thunderbird and getting a very
mixed result. Last night I made a csv of the whole Eudora Address
Book and imported that. Adjusting fields to match produced the
desired result.

Re: Label & addresses app.

2009-11-19 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

For dinosaurs like me who still fiddle with AppleWorks I use the Data Base
1	In Layout mode for Labels select how many labels across you
need and then create one label to the dimensions required and put in
the text.

2 Switch to Browse.
3	In Browse mode you see one label. In the Edit Menu is a
duplicate record command. Use the key board and hit Command - D the
required number of times to fill the page.

4 Print that one page as many times as required on a sheet of labels.
Cheers
Merv

Hi Bill,

I would have thought the easiest way to do multiple copies of the same
address would be just to use the word template for the specific label sheet,
eg:
for the 30 label sheet

Just copy the address and paste from label to label and then print out.

Cheers

Hi Bill,

If you use Address Book v5.0.1 (which you would have in 10.6.2) you can
print "Mailing Labels"

1. Select all the Contacts you want to print "Mailing Labels"
for. I have a

Group "Family", so I select the first contact in "Family", then "Edit >
Select All".

2. File > Print

3. In the Print Window that appears, select "Mailing Labels"
Layout - you have Avery Standard, Avery A4, DYMO (I have a Dymo
LabelWriter 320 so I select Dymo)

Works great using my Dymo so I'm sure it would work well with
Avery Papers.

all the bells and whistles are important but
ultimately the quality of the photo is the prime

Changing seems to be the option I must face. Thank you David.

Evening all,

I must say when you said you still use Eudora I did have to go have
a look to see when the project was ceased as I didn't think it was
in the works anymore. Apparently they released a beta early last
year but I think its trying to revive something that is long past
its used by date.

So you are aware, what seems to be a lot of the 'resources' have
moved through to the Mozilla Foundation Thunderbird project. You
might like to consider this as a possible e-mail client you could
move to although I can highly recommend Apple Mail which since 10.5
has been a real option.

Given the time and space available, this will not be a
comprehensive explanation, or even a particularly good one. For
more information, Google "Forked File" or "Resource Fork".

In a nutshell, the Macintosh file systems HFS and HFS+ (ie, going
back to the earliest Macs) support a file format known as the
"Forked File". That is to say, the file actually exists in two
parts: the Resource Fork and the Data Fork. The Mac OS treats
these two parts as a single entity. Traditionally, the Resource
Fork contains information needed by a file such as images, sounds,
window sizes and much, much more. The following is from a
Wikipedia entry:

"Originally conceived and implemented by programmer Bruce Horn,
the resource fork provided three important improvements to the
Macintosh file system. First, it allowed all graphical data to be
stored on disk until it was needed, then retrieved, drawn on the
screen, and thrown away. This software variant of virtual memory
helped Apple to reduce the memory requirements of the Apple Lisa
from 1 MB to 128 KB in the Macintosh. Second, because all the
pictures and text were stored separately in a resource fork, for
the first time it allowed a non-programmer to translate an
application for a foreign market, a process called
internationalization and localization. And finally, it allows
nearly all of the components of an application to be distributed
in a single file, reducing clutter and simplifying application
installation and removal."

The problem is that HFS and HFS+ are the only file systems which
properly support Forked Files, so when you send a file created on
a Mac as an attachment to a Windows user, they get both forks, and
see them as separate files. Many people, on receipt of these
files, try to open the "Resource Fork" first. These days this file
will typically contain little or no data, so the file will not
open, and they move on. In odrer to deal with this problem in the
early days of email, Apple developed the "AppleDouble" encoding
format which was used by Macintosh email clients (such as Eudora)
in an attempt to over come these problems by combine the two files
into one for transmission through the various UNIS servers it
would encounter through its travels.

These days, especially since the advent of the UNIX-based Mac OS X
system, which itself has trouble with forked files, the Resource
Fork has been largely deprecated. It's still there for
compatibility reasons with older software, so unfortunately
Resource Forks still get sent with your attachments, and they
remain a problem for non-Mac users.

If you use Apple Mail, there is an option you can set to "send
Windows-friendly attachments", in which case the Resource Fork is
stripped off before the attachment is sent. I suspect Eudora is
still using the AppleDouble encoding idea.

As I say, please refer to more authoritative sources for a more
detailed explanation.

Removing the % file before sending seems like good idea but I don't
see it as an attachment in Eudora. The only visible file at the time
of attaching is the data Fork. Searching for a file with the % as
the leading character gives a nil return. Perhaps I am overlooking
something.

Merv

it seems that eudora splits the data fork & the resource fork of a
mac file into 2 separate files, i have that on my win formatted mem
stick, i have seen the % marked file is not used by win users you
may remove it before sending

Attachments: two for one

2009-11-16 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

On a weekly basis I send a pdf, as an attachment, to a large number of people.
I warn them that they might get two files with the same name but
ignore the one with a % sign as its first character.
New comers on the circulation always want to know why they get this
extra file. All I can say is that it one of those features of
crossing platforms.
However, is it because I am using Eudora, a very simple, effective
but elderly application or does it still occur with Mail, Outlook etc?

Re: Safari/Firefox internet problem

2009-10-27 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Peter
If I cut the address you give in your original email and paste it in
the address field immediately following http:// then I get to the
site. I know this sounds naive but have you tried that? I am using
Firefox 3.5.3 with OSX 10.5.8 on an intel iMac.
Other than that, try going to your firewall preferences and give it
permission to receive the web address.

Merv

Thanks to all who replied to my question.

I have just:
Downloaded and installed Firefox 3.5.4
Downloaded all of the Software Updates for OS X and Safari and I am
now using 10.5.8

Verified the Disk
Repaired all Permissions

My iMac is panting after all this exercise!!!

Used Firefox and Safari to surf the web BUT I still can't access
that one site. Safari and Pinging reports that it is an "unknown
host" and Firefox says the server has timed out. In fact, when I
click on the link in the Bookmarks, Firefox does not display the URL
in the address bar.

This is a big mystery...

Hi Peter,
Run Software Update & install everything it lists for your iMac.
Then open Disk Utility
Applications/Utilities/disk Utility
Click (to select) your Volume (HD it is the second), then click
"repair permissions". If you have not done this for awhile it will
take time, be patient & let it finish.

Then repair permissions:

As your problem is happening on both browsers, it is some setting

Do you have Java & JavaScript enabled on both Browsers?
Have you tried in a different User Account?

Forgot to say RSG 7.7.7 is backward compatible to RSG 4.5 which in
turn is backward compatible to RSG 3.0.

On the BTN website

there's a TEACHERS link where you can download resourses in PDF
format. However, the PDFs are unreadable both when they load in
Safari, and if I open them in Preveiw (tried 2 different Macs). They
open fine in Adobe Reader (on my Mac) and Explorer at school

Re: Snow Leopard

Hi Bob and Ronni
Using Disk Utility I checked out the status of my disk as suggested.
On the lower RHS it reads:
Total Capacity 232.9 GB
Write Status Read/Write
S.M.A.R.T. Status Verified
Partition Map SchemeGUID Partition Table
In the Volume Scheme rectangle about 35% is shaded blue which is
consistent with available space being 151.4 GB.

Given that the Partition Map Scheme is identified as a GUID Partition
Table am I correct in assuming that there is no need to reformat my
disk to install Snow Leopard?

Merv ,

Formatted Mac OS extended is fine . BUT what about the
Partition scheme .

Use Disk Utility

Click on your hard drive name ( upper line )

and look at the bottom right for " Partition Map Scheme "

It will show either Apple Partition Map or GUID

If it'sApple Partition Map you will need to Re parttion and Re format

You need GUID

Better - images are downsampled to 150 dpi.
Good - images are downsampled to 72 dpi.

When you export to PDF with "Good", is the file size still too large?

On average a full page of text in Pages amounts to 176 kb. Multiply
that by 30 and add in your header and you are close to the total
mentioned above. If you put further graphics on following pages
then the size goes up accordingly. The Good export reduces the file
to about 40% of it original size - less if no graphics.

PDF Compress is a useful tool as well.
Merv

Hi Bill
In Pages after you have completed you document have you tried using
the Reduce File Size option in the File Menu.

After reducing it then export as a pdf using the Good option. Could help out.

Hi Bill,

When you export to PDF
Best - the resolution of images isn't scaled down.
Better - images are downsampled to 150 dpi.
Good - images are downsampled to 72 dpi.

When you export to PDF with "Good", is the file size still too large?

I can't find your machine. Is it an RX 530? What do you mean by

Merv

Hi Fellow Macites

I was hoping someone out there could offer some advice in getting an
Epson Multifunction RX350 colour printer to better match my Mac when
printing photos. I am am using an Intel Mac Pro with OS 10.4.11

At present the printed colours do not come close to those on the
monitor when printing photos from 'photo packages'. Colours are
pretty good when using graphic converter and word etc.
I have tried to get it all better set up using ColourSycn and Colour
manager but to no avail. I have also contacted Epson via email to
be told I should use Epson ink and Epson paper (which I was already
doing). The colours weren't that bad for the first 6 months and I
am wandering if I have accidentally changed the cloursync or
something by accident.

Any ideas or points to web pages etc would be most welcome as it is
getting a bit frustrating.

Many thanks

Re: Inkjet Printer

2009-07-03 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Our Brother telephone/fax/answering machine has not been sending
facsimiles at a good quality level. Printing a received fax is fine,
but recipients who receive quality faxes from other people receive
mine with a two inch, oops! 5.08 cm wide blank strip to the right of
centre. Cleaning doesn't seem to change that.

And so - I bought an Epson Stylus Office TX600FW. It won't print on
CDs so I will have to continue with my Avery Inkjet Media labels.

There does not seem to be a guten driver for the printer so the
dialogue window for the printer is the traditional Epson style so you
don't know what dpi level is being used at the various options.
However, to date the few scans and prints look very good.

Initially I could not use the provided scanner software and had to
access the scanner through Photoshop Elements. I contacted Epson
Support by phone and got a very helpful person who after checking set
up with me suggested I uninstall the Epson Scanner program, restart
the computer and then reinstall the program. I'm using wireless so
ran through the set up once more for the scanner after the reinstall
and it worked. Big thank you to Epson Support.

Two faxes sent to one of my sons, one BW one colour, and both gave
very good quality.

Thanks for all the comment on my first choice the R290, but Brother
and Canon seem to dominate in most stores I visited. I eventually
found Epson at Tandy and Dick Smith. Neither Tandy nor Dick Smith
had the R290 so I bought the TX600FW from Tandys.

One down side to the new acquisition is that I cannot use my Epson 35
mm Film Adapter for scanning slides on it so I will have to keep my
old Epson Perfection 1260 Photo scanner. The TX has card slots,
ethernet and usb ports only.

Merv

I also have a photo R290 and have had no problems either with paper
jams or printing to CDs. Although inks are not cheap I suspect that
per page printing is cheaper than my previous Canon and definitely
cheaper than my HP.

Hi Merv

I've supplied Epson printers for my clients (and use Epson myself) and I've
always been very happy with them. I find their colour output is great, and
they generally always work with no problems, and last fairly well. (On
average).
I've a few clients with the R290 and they've never had any problems with
them, otherwise I'm sure I would have heard about it.
The new Epson range is very well priced.
Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with Epson. But that's my own
opinion. :o)

Hope that helps.

quality photos can not be produced for a machine under $1000 where as
inkjets can.

An Epson inkjet would be my first choice and a likely product
appeared to be the Epson Stylus Photo R290 (about $170), but reviews
identified feed problems. Anyone had good performances from other
Epson photo quality printers, or an alternative Brand?

Re: Skype: friend can't see me

2009-06-25 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Thank you Reg, Daniel, Susan.
I checked all the buttons as directed.
When I next made contact my friend on the PC said his Skype had not
recognised changes he had made until he shut it down and rebooted it.
We are now in contact and also with one of my sons in Canberra. What
a great device.

Thank you.
Merv

Perhaps also a video cam app such as PhotoBooth may have taken
control of the camera. Check if you can disable the camera in that
app.

Re: Recording DVD

2009-06-23 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Hi Ronni
Thanks for the reassurance about the use of MPEG Streamclip.
In the interests of domestic harmony I will certainly give it a go.
Brian has also advised that VisualHub still works so if necessary I
will attempt to find a download for that.

Thanks to you, Eugene, Brian and James for taking up my cause.
Merv

Hi Merv,

Yes, I agree with James. I have used MPEG Streamclip successfully to
convert a DVD's .VOB files to DV.

Which is what you want to achieve.
Then import the DV file into iMovie and edit, then send to iDVD to
create your DVD.

This would be your cheapest way to go. You can then buy your wife a
new pair of winter boots ;-)

Cheers,
Ronni

I use DVDxDVPro. It is shareware and ported from Windows. Pretty
ugly implementation but it does work. The files are converted to

I would assume that if you save it as a large sized MP4 using

Once you import it into iMovies you can play around and edit it.

Re: Recording DVD

Hi Ronni
The DVD-VHS combo recorder is a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V and behaves like
a set top box as well up to standard digital.
Toast would seem to be a way to go except that I would have to
upgrade from my old 5.2.1!
Thank you for clarifying the file types and explaining their
characteristics, and for the precise instructions if I go down the
Toast path.

Merv

Hi Merv,

Is this from a Philips Brand DVD Recorder?
With Phillips recorded DVD's you don't get two folders as in
VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS like you do on a normal DVD.
You get two folders called ...VIDEO_TS (like normal) and VIDEO_RM
(the RM folder contains DAT files, IFO files, and VIDEO_RM.BUP files).

From what I understand the RM files are only for navigation on a Set
Top DVD Recorder or DVD Recorder with built-in Hard Drive.

From: <http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/terms/video_rm.cfm>

"Folders found in a DVD file structure can often contain a legacy
folder called VIDEO_RM. Essentially, this folder is rather useless
to most set-top DVD players as it is a folder referenced on Philips
brand DVD recorders as well as Philips clones. For reasons unknown,
Philips decided not to abide by standards of DVD file structures and
used this VIDEO_RM folder to hold information about the recording
device a DVD was created on.

The folder, when viewed through several DVD re-authoring tools will
show that it is useless much in the same way an AUDIO_TS folder is."

If you have Toast 8 or Toast 10 you could convert the files(the
files in the VIDEO_TS folder) to DV Stream that iMovie will accept.

1 At the left side of the Toast window, click Video and choose DVDVideo.
2 Drag & Drop the VIDEO_TS folder into the Content Area
3 Select the files in the list
4 Click Export at the bottom of the Toast window, or choose Disc >
 Export Video.
5 Choose the Format to convert to.
DV: Creates a standard definition DV file that can be used with
iDVD and iMovie.
DV 16:9: Creates a widescreen DV file that can be imported into
iDVD and iMovie.

6 Enter a name and choose the location to export to.
7 Click Save.
Toast displays a progress bar and status information as it exports the video.

Cheers,
Ronni

You must add it in Customize Options.

Re: Where did this come from?

2009-06-11 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
After downloading Safari I did a search for some graphics for the
Eucharist. When I clicked on the third site an unsavoury page
appeared. I closed it and clicked on the next site in the search
list and got another unsavoury page. Like you Susan I had pop ups
blocked. I quit Safari and went back to Firefox and had no problems
with my search. There could be a security issue with Safari.

Merv

Hi, that's a bit scary. I had a pop up screen in my browser this
morning too. It was in Chinese, so I don't know what it was for. I
have pop up windows blocked, but I'm finding that I have to have all
cookies checked in security, otherwise I can't log onto MobileMe in
Safari. Normally I just have cookies enabled for sites I visit.
Sounds like there might be a security problem. cheers, Susan.

The DNSChanger Trojan Horse, also known as OSX.RSPlug.A and
OSX/Puper, has been found on numerous pornographic websites
disguising itself as a video codec. Once downloaded and installed,
DNSChanger changes the DNS settings on the computer, redirecting
websites entered by the user to malicious sites. If personal
information is entered on these malicious websites, it can lead to
identity theft.

Using DNSChanger Removal Tool

Upon launching DNSChanger Removal Tool, click the Scan button to
scan for the DNSChanger trojan horse. DNSChanger Removal Tool will
scan your computer for the DNSChanger trojan horse, and alert you
if it is detected. If the DNSChanger trojan horse is detected,
DNSChanger Removal Tool will give you the option to remove it. If
the DNSChanger trojan horse is detected and removed, you will need
to restart your computer to clear out the bad DNS entries added by
the DNSChanger Trojan Horse.

Re: WAMUG constitution

2009-06-06 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Les
You have raised a valid point.
The current committee - albeit flawed according to the Constitution -
can consider the issue and propose a motion for the next AGM or call
a Special Meeting of WAMUG and put the motion to that meeting.
Which ever meeting choice is taken the Membership would need four
weeks notice of the meeting and that notice would include the motion
with a pro statement and a con statement.
Because the Constitution is being changed 75% or more of those
attending would have to be in favour of the motion for it to be
adopted.
There would have to be a quorum for the AGM or Special Meeting of
paid up members - check whether the Constitution says whether the
quorum is to consist of ordinary members or ordinary and sponsor
members.

These are the basics on the matter as raised.
Merv

Hi all,
Me, thinks that more than a can of worms in this instance, has been
opened. Please ponder this for a moment.

'Can a committee that, contains many unconstitutionally elected
members, vote to change part of a constitution that will benefit the
same unconstitutionally elected members?

Perhaps one of our members has the expertise to provide the answer
but I strongly suggest that more advice be sought before this error
is compounded.

Hi guys,

I don't want to stir things up again and, as the first poster to suggest we

During the postings, however, I did notice a possible constitutional
problem:

From Ronni:

WAMUG Constitution:
..

4.11.2 Corporate Members may be voting Members of the Group, and nominate
candidates for the offices of the Committee, but may not become or remain
Committee Members of the Group

Then from Daniel:

As a committee member..

As a corporate member

Now, lets be absolutely clear here:

- I have the utmost respect for anyone who gives up their time
and energy to

serve on the committee
- I have had cause several times to be very grateful to Daniel both for his
expert advice (via the list and personally) and for his excellent service
when buying products from him.
-I have absolutely NO problem whatsoever with Daniel being both a corporate
member and a committee member.

So it seems to me that to avoid any possible constitutional problems you
might want to look at revising clause 4.11.2 of your constitution.

Now all the above is just from my readings of the two relevant
posts - so If
I have misunderstood or misinterpreted the facts in any way
please accept my

humble and abject apologies. My post is only intended to enable a possible
problem to be avoided/rectified rather than to cause any problem.

Possibly, Robert, from a further careful read. Note also, it
scans at only 1800dpi, this is not the greatest if you wish to
make decent sized prints. That's why the price is $149!

Re: a drawing - not showing on Acrobat

2009-05-28 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Gary
I have had similar problems in sharing ordinary files with the dark side.
However, if I open the file in Acrobat and then close it and send it
they can open it etc.

Using the Save a copy as Neil suggests would be a positive extra step.
Merv

Hi Gary,

Sorry, no idea what you are doing wrong - but a couple of ideas.

It may be that the pdf created has some problem that preview can handle but
acrobat can't - in the past I have had similar problems with jpg files that
graphic converter could handle but other applications couldn't - I found
re-saving the file (from graphic converter) solved the problem. I used "save
as" to create a new file rather than just "save' on the old file.

So:

1) You could try just opening the pdf in preview and doing "save as" to a
new pdf file and see how that goes. However I think the print as pdf
basically uses preview to create the file in the first place so you may
still have the same problem.

Or

2) Open the pdf file in Graphic Converter and then "save as" to a new pdf
file - that way you are using graphic converter to create the new file. (I
would be very surprised if graphic converter couldn't open the file.)

Rather than keep sending your trials to the printer it might be best if you
had some way of checking them yourself first.

Have you tried opening them using Adobe Acrobat reader
(free download) - if the printer can't see
the drawing in acrobat, I would expect you to have the same problem in
Acrobat Reader - which then gives you a way to check if your "save as" fixes
the problem.

If you don't see the problem in Acrobat reader on the mac - I suppose it
could be a windows thing. I presume that, in your line of work, you also run
windows (under parallels?) so you could also try the windows version of
Acrobat reader to check the problem.

Anyway a few things to try - good luck.

Cheers

Re: Ghostscript

2009-05-26 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
Thanks Roger. I have installed Ragtime 6.5 on a PC running XP. To
export a PDF file Ragtime requires Ghostscript 8.6 or higher. I
installed the latest version 8.6.4 for windows 32 bit. It seems to
process but ends with an error message.
Your comment about the quality of the pdf is relevant. From the Mac
version the pdf is acceptable to the printing industry.

Perhaps the ghostscript out of Ragtime will not be acceptable.
Merv

Hi Guys

Ghostscript does work but the quality of the PDF hasn't always been
good, we have
had some issues with ghostscript where we have had to put the file
back through

Acrobat to get it working.

But as always everyone has different thoughts.

Thanks Glen - hadn't realised one could do that!
Merv

Matt, you can change the name of the computer on the network with
Preferences, Sharing (Computer Name at top).

If you go to the finder, click on the Macintosh HD icon and then press
Cmd I (Get Info), the Name and Extension section lets you edit the
name of the disk.

Glenn.

2009/5/21 Matt Falvey :

Hi list, I have a small problem with the name I gave my Intel iMac HD and
the name I gave my old G4 iMac HD when I network them.

The Intel iMac and the iMac G4 both appear as Macintosh HD on my shared list
in the finder window, (the old iMac G5 is okay with Macintosh HD G5 and the
PowerBook is okay with PowerBookG4).

Ideally I would like to call the:

Intel iMac - Macintosh HD Intel, and the;
iMac G4 - Macintosh HD G4

Also in the Finder window under Devices on the Intel iMac it is listed as
"Matthew Falvey's iMac", I would like to change that too, hopefully to
reflect the name of the renamed HD - Macintosh HD Intel. Can any of this be
done without to much work and without causing a catastrophe?

Thanks.

Audacity itself works fine. The problem is interfacing with the iMic

I can only think the reason it works it possibly that it addresses

Checked again. You are right - I was doing a 'get info' on the
Installer version The small print on the download page shows
1.1.0

I ran the installer then went to System Preferences - Print & Fax

Another path was not to click on + but Printer Setup.

You ran the installer on which Mac

If you are trying to install on the intel iMac , during the Instal

if you had the printer plugged directly into that iMac !

There are 3 places to look to see where and whether the driver was loaded

Hard drive - Library - Printers

Hard drive - System - Library - Printers

Your user - Library - Printers

The list of names I have includes a bundle of names but not a sight of Okidata
so I do not know at this time whether the installer can create a
folder for that name

or what it does with the driver if it needs that folder but cannot find it .

more later

OKidata appears in user - library - Printers and in
Hard drive - Library - Printers but not in
Hard drive -System - Library - printers

Bob, there appears to be no update driver so I guess we should drop the topic

Merv

Hi

Agriculture WA has a fantastic web site for farm owners that
requires you to register before you can access it.

http://spatial.agric.wa.gov.au/findyourfarm/

Unfortunately this appears not able to be done via Safari or Firefox
and according to the Dept contact person requires Explorer for
access - my reluctantly downloaded IE 5.2.3 refuses to allow
registration as well.

Any clues or work around that people may know of would be appreciated.

to be touched. From what I can gather looking around I think its
possible with iPhoto which I don't have installed. I could email
the files if I had mail setup which I don't.

Secondly my Mother is trying to learn using the various mac
programs and is after a iWorks Tutorial/walkthrough or the like.
She is after a basic course which explains as much as possible she
can run through at her own pace? Anyone know of a good place to
look for such a tutorial?

Hello Wez,

If you take a screenshot of your iPhone's display by "quickly press
& release the Sleep/Wake & Home buttons at the same time", the
screenshot is added to the Camera Roll.
You can then use iPhoto on your Mac to import the photo from the
iPhone's Camera Roll.

Are you saying you don't have iPhoto installed on your Mac?

For your Mother:
I find The Apple Training Series are very good, I have the iWork '08
and a few others. They have not released a iWork '09 as yet, I don't
think.

"This self-paced learning guide, which includes a companion CD
jam-packed with practical media files, takes you step-by-step
through essential, real-life tasks for home and office that cover
all aspects of iWork '08. The book is both a self-paced learning
tool and the official curriculum of the Apple Training and
Certification Program, used by schools and training centers
worldwide, and is ideal for users of all levels."

Cheers,
Ronni

How does one find out whether an iWork '09 Training manual is being
produced? Searching Training on the Apple Store site results in a
list of those currently available but the 'Contact Us' options
provide no feedback facility on such a question. Is it just a matter
of wait and see, and periodically checking the Store's web site?

Hi,

I have a few more iMacs ready for distribution to needy people, but
unfortunately I am short of a few keyboards and mice.

If anyone on the list has some spare USB boards and even the old
puck mice, I would be most grateful. I contacted Winthrop
Technologies and they have just dumped a stack of such gear.

I have some PC boards and whilst they do work, they lack the extra
USB ports needed when a printer, keyboard and mouse is attached.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Search Window

2009-03-10 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Travis
If I enter a word in Spotlight it initially produces a list with the
first item, Show All.
When I click on Show All a dialogue box appears and in the headings
are Contents and File Name. As you say, Contents is the default, but
a click on File Name produces what you want.

If in the Finder you go to File and Find you get the same window as
clicking on Show All in Spotlight. Click on File Name.

Seconds are precious but that is about all it takes.

You can also use key board shortcuts to open these windows. See
Spotlight preferences.

Merv

Hi all,
There's something that's been bugging me since upgrading to Leopard.
When I open a normal Finder window and type something in the search
field in the top right corner, it searches the contents of the files
on my mac because (of course) the "Contents" button is selected by
default. Is there a way to have the "File Name" button selected by
default when doing a search in this way? 99% of the time I only want
to search the file names.

Cheers

Hello Merv,

I've been doing this for years and never had a problem using PayPal.

To send a payment in another currency, follow these steps:
1. Log in to your account at https://www.paypal.com/.
2. Go to the Send Money tab.
3. Enter the payment details.
4. Select the currency you want to use to fund your payment by
clicking the currently link next to the Amount box.

5. Click Send Money.
Your seller will receive an email letting them know the amount and
currency of your payment.

Hi Merv,

Thanks Ronni. In a call to PayPal I was advised that the seller must
register with PayPal (they are not with PayPal), and I cannot do a
payment from my PayPal bank account to another bank account.

Well, that is my understanding of the telephone conversation.
So, off to my bank to use their procedures.

Re: Keynote and transparency

2009-02-18 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Glen
I don't know how helpful this is to you but in Keynote help the
following item occurs:

Keynote 1.0: Translucent Elements Look Fuzzy When Viewed in PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint may not display all translucent graphic elements
of a Keynote presentation properly.

Symptom

Keynote presentations which include graphic elements that use image
transparency may look fuzzy when viewed in Microsoft PowerPoint for
OS X.

Solution

This is a limitation of Microsoft PowerPoint. Consider viewing
Keynote presentations using the Keynote application, or export the
presentation to QuickTime to be viewed in QuickTime player.

Merv

Does anyone know if it is possible to use the Export function in
Keynote to create a PNG image with a transparent background?

Keynote supports transparency within slides, but as soon as I export I
always get a solid background. I *can* then go to Preview and use
Instant Alpha and save with a transparent background, but would prefer
to export direct from Keynote.

I've tried using the Slide Inspector to set the Appearance properties.
Have tried setting Background to None (exports to white) and also
Background to Color Fill with 0% opacity (also exports to white).

Any ideas (short of buying Photoshop)? Or is Keynote + Preview the only way?

Thanks,

Glenn Nicholas

Subject: Re: Keynote to DVD

Hi Merv,

Today I converted a slide show of mine from Keynote '09 to a DVD
using the "Share > Send To > iDVD.
My slideshow has an Audio Sound Track and I found using the
"Share-Send to-iDVD" the sound track was all out of sync when played
in iDVD.

So I decided to "Share > Export to Quicktime.
Playback Uses: Fixed Timing
Slide Duration: 4.0 seconds
Build Duration: 1.5 seconds (these settings matching what I had in
my Keynote Presentation)

Repeat: None
ticked "Enter full screen mode when opened"
Formats: Full Quality, Large
Audio ticked include audio (sound files, movie audio) & include the
slideshow soundtrack

Exported to Movies Folder
Played the exported quicktime movie to check it and it was in perfect sync.

Then opened iDVD & created a DVD project using this exported QT movie.
Saved as a Disc Image to check and it was fine when played in DVD Player.app
Then burnt a DVD from the disc image using Toast 10 Titanium

Played the completed DVD in my DVD Player / TV and it was perfect.
So, I would suggest if you have a sound track in your Keynote
Slideshow, that you export using Quicktime with similar settings to
mine above.

I wish you the best with your project.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hello Merv,

As you know I'm having a break from support on WAMUG.
But, I can't help checking the Archives now and then (I'm still
having withdrawal symptoms) and noticed your email re: Keynote to
DVD.

1.In Keynote you can go to "Share - Send To - iDVD"
2.Specify the size of the video you want to create:
Standard 4:3 or Widescreen 16:9
3. Chose a Playback Uses Method:
a] Manual Advance: Gives viewers total control over the slideshow
as they click to advance slides
b] Recorded Timing : Uses timings that you have recorded for a
slideshow using the command File > record Slideshow
c] Fixed Timing: Runs the slideshow with no user interaction. You
must set slide duration & build options. If slides contain
automatic build timings, those will be used.

4. Click Send: Then give the file a name and target your Movies folder.
5. Click Export
A Quicktime Movie file is written to disk. Depending on the number
of slides, it can take a few minutes to create the DVD Video file.
Before the export finishes, iDVD will launch automatically.
Whichever theme you were using the last time you had iDVD open
will be active, and you might hear the theme's soundtrack playing.
You can click the start or stop motion button in the DVD main menu
to stop the animation and sound.

6. When the export finishes, click the Play button to test the DVD project.
a] Click Play Movie to watch the entire movie
b] Click Scene Selection to see an index of the presentation

Now choose a theme for the main menu of the DVD, one that matches
the look of your slideshow

1. Click the Themes button to access all available themes
2. Choose the Theme from the pop-up menu
3. Then click OK to apply the theme family to all menus

Now you need to populate the DVD menu to complete its design
1. Click the Edit Drop Zones button to access all the drop zones
for the project
Drop zones are places in the menu where you can add (or drop) your
own content.

2. Click the Preview button to preview your DVD
Watch the project all the way through to ensure smooth playback.
When finished with the preview, click the Exit button on the
remote to stop previewing the DVD
3. If you are happy with your result you can now click the Burn
Button to create the DVD

Cheers,
Ronni

Keynote to DVD

2009-02-12 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Running 10.5.6 on an iMac intel. Keynote version 5, iMovie 7.1.4, iDVD 7.03.
Needed to convert a slide show from Keynote to a DVD.
Used the Keynote option to convert the slide show to an iDVD project.
However iDVD would not accept it as it had to be a shared file from
iMovie. iMovie would not import it nor accept drag and drop. What
am I overlooking?

Suggestions appreciated.

Re: Publishing software

2009-02-07 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Darrel
My son who has just had a book published uses Adobe InDesign. He is
a landscape photographer and wanted to place his own text and
photographs. Worked well.

If you don't own InDesign a cheaper option is Ragtime. It is a page
layout application that again allows for text and images to be put
where you want them and at resolutions you want. It uses Adobe
Distiller to create the pdf for the printer to use. It is a German
product. Check out

http://www.ragtime.de/start.html?lang_id=en
Merv

Hi Darrel

I use Adobe InDesign for our publishing work. Clients prepare their
text input in Word and provide the photos/images separately. I bring
the text and images together and do the layout using Indesign and
eventually save the finished product as a PDF file which goes to the
printer for digital printing.

If the printer is required to do more than just print off the PDF,
they prefer to work with InDesign or Quark Express. I agree with the
comments that generally, no-one likes Word for final document
preparation, but it's great to do the writing - just don't embed
anything else in it, and don't bother with fancy formatting... all
that can be done with the layout program.

Haven't tried Pages for anything big, though it looks good.

Cheers
Mike

Open Keyboard Viewer from the Input menu, and hold down Shift, Option,

It will be used automatically by any HP digital device you install.
As such, it offers no more nor less than similar products offered by
other manufacturers - a quick and simple way to mange the digital
images you acquire through your scanner or printer (with built-in
card readers). I continue to use iPhoto with my digital cameras, but
the Canon MP Navigator is fine for managing my scans without the
worry of dumping unwanted stuff into iPhoto.

As far as it goes, Photosmart Studio works fine. It's up to you how
much you want to commit to it.

Re: Very Old Disks

My MacPlus of 1987 would not read HD disks, only DD. Is the computer
being used a Classic, which would read HD, so would Kevin's 6200 -
and from there using a MacLink conversion they could be stepped up to
say Word 6 or Claris 5 and from there to more recent applications.

Merv

Thanks Ronni, they are Verbatim HD format.
We have an Imation drive here that reads 800k & I've also tried them
in a Beige G3 with an actual floppy drive. Both these drives read
floppies that we have here so I know they work.

The disks were written quite recently apparently and still read on
the old Mac that created them so it's likely a problem of
compatibility.

I think the problem is going to be that anything old enough to read
them won't have any way of creating a medium that can be read on a
modern Mac, except possibly using a SCSI CD burner. My problem is I
can't justify how much I would have to charge a client to chase
down an old Mac and do the converting so I hoped to find someone
here who would take the challenge on a more amateur basis rather
than simply saying no to the client.

What floppies are they? If you know someone who has an Imation

However, they cannot read 400K floppy disks. So you'll need to find
an old Mac if you have a 400K disk to read (kevin's 6200 Performa
might be able to).

Also ... the floppies could be corrupted. Floppy disks are only
rated for data retention for 15 years.
Beyond that point, the probability is greater than 50% that data
errors will render the data unreadable.

Cheers

Re: sharing scanner on a leopard network?

2008-11-19 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Thanks Gary and Peter
Have set up my wife's iBook to access our Epson Perfection 1260 Photo
scanner. Thought it might be too old.

Merv

howdy
can a USB Epson scanner be shared on a Leopard network - ethernet
and airport extreme

I am unable to see where this option may exist

thanks to Peter Hinchliffe, who rang me adn suggest ath image
capture has scanner sharing built in for local networks, and that
Epson were one of the first to enable this with their scanners.

so after reading scanner sharing in image capture help, I have got it to work.
you beauty.

thanks Peter

record a video program

2008-10-29 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond
I have missed recording an episode of a series of a TV program.
However, by going to the TV station's web site I can view the episode
on my computer. Is there a way of recording the episode while it is
playing on my computer so that I can watch it later and retain the
viewing order? I am not sure how long the station will retain the
episodes and I still have a couple to watch to catch up.

Re: SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT. Next WAMUG Meeting

2008-10-26 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Peter, please book me in for 3.
Mervyn

The next General Meeting of WAMUG will be held on Tuesday, 4th
November 2008 (Melbourne Cup Day) at FutureSphere, the dedicated
Macintosh facility at Christ Church Grammar School in Claremont.
Access is easiest from Queenslea Drive, Claremont. For more details
visit
and
.

The meeting will commence at 7:30pm, and following our customary
Welcome to New Visitors and Q&A Session, Geoff Alagoda, the head of
IT at Christ Church, will talk to us about FutureSphere and its role
in IT education at the school.

Following Geoff's talk, well-known WAMUG list contributor Gary Dorn
will show us what Google's popular 3D architectural drawing program
SketchUp can do in the hands of a professional. He will also talk
about CAD software on the Mac in general.

Thirdly, provided stocks are available, we should have a new MacBook
to show and demonstrate, and which will be available for examination
by attendees.

The meeting will finish with wine and cheese (and soft drinks, of
course, for those who prefer them).

In order for the night to be a success, we will need a clear
indication of those who will be attending to we can get the catering
numbers right. If you are able to attend the FutureSphere meeting,
please simply reply to this message to wamug@wamug.org.au, by
Wednesday, 29 October at the latest.

Re: Domain Name problem

2008-10-21 Thread Mervyn & Giuliana Bond

Just to add to the trivia question:
Nullarbor - The Advanced Atlas of Modern Geography, John
Bartholomew MC, Meiklejohn and Son Limited, 1956

Nullarbor - Complete Atlas of Australia, The Readers Digest, Sydney, 1968
Nullarbor - Western Australia, An Atlas of Human Endeavour 1829 *
1979, Education and Lands and Surveys Departments of Western
Australia, 1979.

Dogs find the plain boring.
Cheers
Merv

Hehe,

Well it's changed from Nullabore to Nullabor - so now it's consistent across
your site.

However, as John said, I always thought the strictly correct spelling was
Nullarbor (as in - no trees).

However, Nullabor does also seem to be in common usage.

Google gives:

247,000 hits for Nullarbor

92,300 hits for Nullabor

Take your pick :)

Cheers

Thanks to all for the responses, unfortunately I am unable to access
it on any of the 4 machines available to me where I am at present. I
have corrected the Nullabor spelling via iWeb and it appears to have
uploaded the correction OK. If anyone who has been able to get in
could have another look and confirm that the correction has uploaded I
will appreciate it, it will also serve to confuse me even more.
