Computer dying...or not?

2020-06-15 Thread Pat
Hi, Neil,

It worked! Thank you very much! I followed the instructions for the inbuilt Mac
hardware testing diagnostics. It was very strange, because the software
responded, but seldom in the way the instructions said said they would.. Almost
everything was different. I used the June 2013 Apple Diagnostics. I don’t have
a mouse, just Wacom pens, and they couldn’t be moved to select a language. But
it didn't seem to matter. And a few other deviations. But everything seems in
order now. I’m crossing my fingers hoping that it will still be working
tomorrow morning.

Cheers! Pat

Horrible Catalina

2020-04-28 Thread Pat
Hello, WAMUGgers, I moved over to Brisbane,4 months ago. My computer
didn’t catch up with me for several of those months. When I finally cranked it
up and pushed the Start button, there was Catalina. Well, I thought, I hope it
is as good as its predecessor. But, I was in for shock after shock. To put it
in straight words: I Hate Catalina. There are so many horrible changes; what
has Apple been thinking? I read about the Mac virus problem, but that doesn’t
warrant the infliction of Catalina on unsuspecting computers.

Anyway, does anyone know if Catallina will be superceded? Soon? And does
anyone know if there is anything like WAMUG in Brisbane?

I wish good health for all of you in these treacherous times.

Stay safe and warm,
Pat Scott

Changing passcode

2019-09-28 Thread Pat
A few weeks ago, my husband carelessly left his backpack sitting on the train
platform. Two stations later, he realised what had happened and immediatiely
went back to the start: but too late. The phone was gone. The very helpful
conductors helped us lock the phone, and then we started a search to find the
phone. And we did find the phone 2 days later, and got it back.

Unfortunately, my husband couldn’t remember the Passcode. It was all numbers in
some kind of mathematical array. The phone is on the family plan, so I am the
person who has to fix it.

I looked on the internet to see how to change the passcode, but most (or all)
remedies involve erasing the phone (there is no back up).

I would like to know if uploading that data to the Cloud or the App Store in
order to change the passcode also will erase the data, or would it be possible
to see what is there, so we could replace it?

Unlocking stolen iPhone

2019-08-01 Thread Pat
Hello, WAMUGers,

On Monday, my husband carelessly left his backpack in the Kelmscott train
station. We dashed back as soon as we discovered that, about 25 minutes later.
The backpack was there, but the iPhone SE was not.

The station guards and the associated police were very helpful. A guard
remotely locked the phone, and Apple sent us updates on the location of the
phone for several days. Today we finally were able to search for it, in a large
overgrown yard -- and found it.

Now I need to find out how to unlock it. I have the unlock code that the guard
gave me, but I don't know what to do with it. How does one access 'Click All
Devices' and 'Lost Mode'?

The phone does not have a sim card in it at the moment: we were getting ready
to switch providers. I hope someone can point me to the appropriate actions to
take. I have tried searching Safari, but there are multiple different
interpretations of 'unlocking an iPhone.'

Pat,
hopeful

Icons on Desktop

2019-07-23 Thread Pat
I like to arrange small groups of related icons along the sides and corners of
the Desktop — I used to be able to put them there and they would stay there.
But suddenly, they started lining themselves in wide ranks and I was not able
to shift them so they would stay put.

Is there a remedy for this? I have tried all the options that were offered.
Anything I move just zooms back to where it was.

An Apple demand?

2019-06-21 Thread Pat
I just received an email from Apple saying they had tp confirm my ID and
presented a long form to fill out. It all looked very correct but I now have
some doubts. It asked for details of my bank account and said I couldn’t access
the App store or or few other things until I sent the information.

I filled out most of the form but refused to put my account number on the form,
and sent it.

This is the address behind the URL on the form :
no-replying-ompsbxubuipaypalaccountmanageompsbxu...@vejesese.com.
Does this look genuine? Or is it just another clever scam?

I will see if I get banned from buying anything from Apple, and if I do, I
will notify you on the list

Re: Something I didn't buy

2019-05-10 Thread Pat
Hi, Neil,

Thanks for your reply. I think the landline is back in business now, but the 2
iPhones are not. They all use Telstra but the landline is handled by iiNet, and
our payments go to them, and the iPhones are pre-paid on the Telstra web site.
So the mystery remains: why don’t the iPhones work, and how can we fix things.

I know that the NBN is supposed to notify homeowners when they need to sign up,
but our road is in a kind of enclave: homes on land on 2 sides of us are
already using NBN, but supposedly it won’t get to our road for another year or
two. So it occurred to me that possibly someone turned off the old phone lines
by mistake.

Anyway, thanks again.

Pat

Re: Something I didn't buy

2019-05-09 Thread Pat
Thank you, Peter and Philippe. I have alerted the bank about this.

But it never rains but it pours, according to an old saying. And this strange
new problem has arisen: Both of our iPhones and our Landline phone are not
functioning. They ring on an incoming call, but when we answer, our voices
don’t register and a recorded voice says, “connection failed”. And if we try to
ring out, we are told that our phone is not connected.

This made me think that perhaps the NBN caused us to be cut off, but according
to the NBN map on the iiNet website our address is not undergoing any changes,
and we can’t expect the NBN for a couple of years.

I haven’t wanted to use the ‘Cloud’ for phone calls, so I wondered if Apple was
applying some subversive influence, but surely Apple is above that and they
wouldn’t do anything to our Landline.

We are open to any suggestions of why this is happening.

Hopefully,
Pat

2019-05-09 Thread Pat
I received an email today which may or may not have come from Apple. It says,

One anomaly is that where it says ‘you can cancel a Subscription at any time:

The email did not say ‘No Reply’, so I did reply, but it bounced.

What recourse do I have?

Communicating with Apple

2019-02-20 Thread Pat
I received an email supposedly from Apple sending me a receipt for purchases at
the iTunes store. I knew it wasn’t genuine so I asked for a call back from
Apple Support. I explained the situation and the person told me to send the
receipt to Apple and gave me the address of Report physh...@apple.com. So I
tried that, but the email was instantly rejected by Mail.

The Apple barricades are impenetrable. So I guess I could report that email to
Scam Watch.

Re: Still having *** password problems

2018-12-18 Thread Pat
Hi, Stephen and Susan,

I only have one Apple ID account! Had the same one for years.

And if you look at all the emails about this topic, it often happens that the
Apple ID and passwords for other things get called, generically, passwords.
This was something that confused me considerably when I was trying to fix
things. That is why some explanations were not understood.

I still have the same single Apple ID, it was the others, like the PW to put in
the start-up window, that got changed. I thought that same PW would work on all
the other computer-related stuff, but it seems that has been changed, not for
the better.

Re: Still having *** password problems

2018-12-17 Thread Pat
Thanks, Ronni,

Apple must have changed its procedures some time back, and I had never heard of
multiple Apple passwords for different apps bought at different times. If I had
known, I would have kept track of what I bought with which password. It is a
very complex matter, and, really, Apple should be the entity to change all the
passwords for the customer. It would be easy to set up a program to do it
automatically.

Plus, I didn’t buy iCloud: I haven’t used it before, but I wanted to get
started with it, but it would not accept either of my 2 most recent passwords.

If the only option is to throw the old apps out and buy new ones, then I
wouldn’t have many left, unless the pay-once protocol would allow me to get

Re: Still having *** password problems

2018-12-15 Thread Pat
Thanks, Stephen and Phillipe,

I have several devices plus my computer and they also all use the same
passwords. I got it sorted out this morning with a phone call from an Apple
person, but no explanation why the 2 different App stores don’t sing from the
same music sheet.

Oh well, I just hope this all doesn’t happen again.

Still having *** password problems

2018-12-15 Thread Pat
Apple is stuffing me around: I have a good new password which up to now has
been accepted everywhere— the IOS app store accepts it, but the OS app store
does not. I entered it twice when trying to download something and now it says
I have to retrieve it, whatever that means. How does one retrieve a password
and why is the App store the odd one out?

How many passwords do I have to have???

Why doesn’t Apple just build a syringe into new macs so they can stab your

Re: Too many passwords

2018-12-02 Thread Pat
Thanks, Peter and Susan,

One thing I read while I was thrashing around trying to fix things, was that if
you enter a password incorrectly 2 times, you have to (I forget the exact
words) sort it out with Apple (which isn’t easy to do, as you are only given a
limited number of topics that you can choose from.)

But for now, everything is working reasonably well, but I still haven’t tackled
iCloud. Will do, soon.

Cheers,
Pat

Too many passwords

2018-11-30 Thread Pat
I have a functioning password to open the computer and other ones to send and
receive mail. But I have just discovered that Apple has a clutch of others that
I don’t know. I have never voluntarily used iCloud, so as far as I am
concerned, it has no password. How do I find out how to find it or create it,
because apparently I need it?

It looks like I may need other passwords for functions about which I have no
idea. Security gone mad.

I was just trying to transfer something to one of my external disks. Couldn’t
do it by drag and drop without the damn password. The one that opens my
computer used to do it, but it was rejected.

I hope someone can help.

Update on Password problem update

2018-11-20 Thread Pat
Hello, all,
Many thanks to all who wrote back with suggestions — Diana, Susan, Peter, Tim,
Neil. I can log into the computer now. I rang Apple this morning, and was
passed through several people to an Apple technician. After he had tried making
a few new passwords, and getting the same result as me (in other words — they
didn’t work), he guided me through a process using Terminal, and we finally
arriived at the fix. It took about 2 hours to get there, an ordeal.

But the news is not all good. All my settings and a lot of personal stuff (Key
Chain!) is gone, It seems I have to argue with bossy applications to replace
the info into them. My 3 Mail accounts persistently rejected having the proper
Mail passwords replaced several times.

I don’t have Time Machine, just a very large backup hard disk and Super Duper.
I do not see any of the Key Chain data — does Super Duper hide it anywhere? If
it is not there, I’m going to have a hard time.

Apple's automated guide to retrieving passwords needs some urgent improvement.
It is impossible in places to know just which password is to be retrieved: thel
log-in name or Apple ID. In my case, it was the password specifically to start
the computer.

And I will not be changing the new password any time soon.

Thanks again,
Pat

Smarty pants Mail.app keeps changing address

2018-08-20 Thread Pat
I just wrote a letter to my sister; when I tried to put her new address on the
letter, the app kept changing it back to an old, obsolete address. The new
address is in the Contact app and the old address has been removed. The new
address wouldn’t stick even when I typed it in by hand. Is there a solution for
this? I would rather not get a different mail app.

Re: Inserting page break into a PDF from HTML

2018-05-28 Thread Pat
Hi, David,

I haven’t done this, but my html book says:
You can insert a page break before or after an element.

Example: the html should say this element.

The css should be,  *.page-break-after { page-break-after: always; }

And the same pattern for ‘page-break-before’.

I hope this helps.

Pat

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-13 Thread Pat
Hi, Daniel,

Thanks for your reply, but I still haven’t been able to change away from the
pernicious Bing. Clicking on the magnifying glass does nothing. On the Safari
Preferences Search tab, trying to change Bing to anything else is futile. I
attach a screen shot of the Safari General Preference tab. It differs from the
screen shot that Peter Faulks sent (thanks, Peter) in that my list does not
contain a Default search engine. I am convinced that these changes are the
result of the Security 2018-001 update. I have to say I was puzzled by the
2018-001 number because it is already May and there must have been previous
security updates, or is that wrong?

Cheers,
Pat

Re: Search engine!

2018-05-12 Thread Pat
Hi, Daniel and others who responded,

I wish it was this easy. Those ‘remedies’ were the first things I tried to do,
but, Bing just doesn’t go away. Looking at the Websites tab of Safari
preferences it appears that you can turn Bing off and turn on the preferred
browser, but that doesn’t work either.

This change obviously came with Security Update 2018-001 I installed last
night. Working through the list, if I turned on DuckDuckGo, the warning icons
appear and say it isn’t secure enough, and the same warning comes up with other
choices and only Bing is left.

Probably most other members have installed this already — are they stuck with
Bing also?

Thanks,
Pat

I have just discovered that my choice of search engine has been corrupted: I

Combo update?

2018-03-30 Thread Pat
Just received an email from ‘Maintain’, email address: i...@maintain.se
<mailto:i...@maintain.se>, recommending a combo update to High Sierra 10.13.4,
and providing a link.

With all the clever scams these days, I did not want to click this. I looked on
the Apple website and could not find any reference to a combo update. Also
looked at the App Store — no mention of a 10.13.4 update.

Is there such a link on Apple’s site?

“System Extension Blocked

I searched on the internet for “Legacy Developer: Atto” but the results still

Re: Apple I.D.

2017-09-04 Thread Pat
Hi, Tony,

I’m sure other people who know more will get back to you. I had exactly this
same experience 2 weeks ago. A message from Apple saying someone was using my
account in Wembley — which is a long way from where I live. Still, I couldn’t
be sure it wasn’t true. You probably get the same map marked with the location
and the options to allow or disallow. I kept clicking ‘disallow’ and the cycle
would begin again. After losing quite a lot of hair, I pushed the button for a
live chat. This person explained that the map was very inaccurate and should be
ignored, and I should have clicked ‘allow’.

The person who answered said that the solution would use 2 of my ‘trusted’
devices. For me, that was the iPhone and the iPad; the number that comes up on
one device, needs to be entered on the other one in order to prove that you are
you. I don’t remember the gnarly details.

So I would recommend the live chat to sort to sort it out.

Cheers,
Pat

2017-06-15 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

Thanks very much.

When I started to unravel this problem, I wasn’t sure which big company was
responsible. I now know it wasn’t Apple (they have totally discontinued support
for a phone running iOS 7.3).

My conclusion is that I need to go to a Telstra shop with all the Telstra
passwords and IDs. Dealing with Telstra on the phone is too painful. I hope it
won’t come to having to reset the phone.

Cheers,
Pat

Blocked iPhone

2017-06-14 Thread Pat
I hope this isn’t too far off topic. My husband recharged his iPhone 4 at a
Telstra shop but didn’t know the password or Apple ID because I have been
managing the phone for him on my computer. I tried to unblock it on the phone
itself, but there are too many passwords involved — Apple and Telstra -- and I
didn’t hit on the correct one, which made the phone even more unresponsive.

I have just sorted out the ID and password with Apple, but the The phone is on
iOS 7.3 so it is not listed as one of my devices.

I searched on the Telstra site for info about how to unblock an iPhone, but
everything seemed to be about unlocking a phone. I didn’t buy the phone from
Telstra. The only Unblock iPhone mention on community support was not relevant
to this situation.

Where do I go from here? I hope someone can help.
TIA,
Pat

Re: Update from Yosemite to Sierra 10.12.4

2017-06-04 Thread Pat
Thank you very much, Ronni,

I was not aware of the macOS Sierra app — it must be a new method since I
installed Yosemite. I was confused by the name being so similar to the later
updates.

It took a long time to download and install, but things on my computer are
mostly back to normal. I have a few small gripes: it doesn’t seem possible now
to view emails before they are downloaded. That was a feature I liked very much
— weed out the recognizable bad ones before they hit my desktop.

Folders have been shuffled into different locations, and my custom icons have
been removed, but that just takes a little time to fix.

Again, many thanks!

Pat

Re: Update from Yosemite to Sierra 10.12.4

2017-06-03 Thread Pat
I also am having a problem updating from OSX 10.10.5. I first downloaded the
latest Sierra Combo to 10.12.5. When I tried to install it, the message said it
could only be installed on 10.12.2. So I downloaded the Combo installer for
that. When I tried to install it, it said it could only be installed on
10.11.1.

I have downloaded that Combo now, but it still says it has to be installed on
10.11.0. I have searched for such a Combo installer without success.

Need some advice as to what to do. I thought Combo installations should work on
any previous OS. Certainly, Yosemite is the last iteration of OSX 10. The Apple
"support help" has not provided any information.

Hopefully,
Pat

Re: Macbook Pro Certificates

2017-04-28 Thread Pat
There is a report in today’s online news about a new malware targeting Macs
calle OSX/Dok. The first symptom is a pop-up message about a new OSX update.
Don’t update! It is a trojan that can bypass Gatekeeper. Apparently it is
signed with a valid developer certificate and attacks all kinds of Mac.

Re: Creating new mail account

2016-12-14 Thread Pat
I’m very happy to report that Daniel Kerr sent me the solution to this problem:
it is done by deliberately putting an error in the password when setting up a
new account, which forces the form to ask for more information and giving the
choice of IMAP or POP.

Thanks again, Daniel.

Creating new mail account

2016-12-14 Thread Pat
Hello, WAMUGers,

I am trying to create a new mail account, but the form in System
Preferences/Internet Accounts does not give me any choice about the type of
account. I want it to be POP, but I am only provided with IMAP. I don’t need
any of the ‘services’ provided with IMAP and I really don’t want to be forced
to have it.

Is there any way I can get a POP account?

Thanks,
Pat

Re: OS 10.10.2 and Quicklook

2015-02-03 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

After reading the posts on the updating problems, I used 10.10.2 as I already
had 10.10.1 installed.
Repaired permissions, but did not Repair Drive.

After reading the posts this afternoon, I tried the Preview trick mentioned by
Neil, but Preview wouldn’t open a .html file.

So, I will try the other new suggestion, to go through the whole updating
procedure again with the Combo 10.10.2 tomorrow.

Thanks, everybody
Pat

Re: Mail problems again

2014-11-23 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

It’s fixed! I tried all the suggestions with no luck, so started from scratch
with the router: discovered that it only had its own DNS number in the Network
Wi-Fi panel. Fortunately, I had all the original data written down, so was able
to add the necessary. Now I can gather up the piles of hair lying around and
try to stick it back on. I can’t imagine how those numbers vanished away.

Thank you very much for your help!
Cheers,
Pat

Hi, Ronni,

The only entry on the Proxy panel is at the bottom where it says: Bypass proxy
settings for these Hosts & Domains: *.local, 169.254/16

Should this be removed?

Mail problems again

2014-11-22 Thread Pat Scott
For no apparent reason, suddenly Mail on my Mac is not connecting to the wifi.
I can't send or receive anything. This letter is being written on the iPad.

The wifi is working properly: the iPad and my husband's laptop have no
difficulty with it. There are apps on the iPad that interact with the Mac by
wifi and they function normally. So it must be something within Mail.

In Mail, the 3 POP email accounts are shown as off-line, with exclamation
marks, and they cannot be put back on-line. In the Mailbox menu, I can toggle
back and forth between the on and off setting, but nothing happens. None of the
account settings have changed.

Mail Connection Doctor says Mail is able to connect to the Internet and
Connection Status is green, the 3 email accounts all have red status, and I
should check account data. I glanced at the Logs. The most recent
SocketStreamEvents Log says ERROR: Connecting failed for socket: 0x618000b75e0:
Error: Domain=NSPOSIXError Domain Code=60 "The operation couldn't be completed.
Operation timed out." Also "Unscheduled streams from run loop waiting for open
-- socket: " and much more. Unfortunately, I don't know what it means.

Mac Pro 2013
running OS 10.10

Yosemite bug report

2014-10-26 Thread Pat
I’ve just installed Yosemite. It all went smoothly with no problems. However, I
noticed something that must be a bug, just a small one, but annoying.

I like to check the Get Account Info on the bottom of the Mail window before I
download mail. The bug is that the first line in the Account Info window does
not show the Subject or the Size of the first message, just the Date Received
and the Time.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there somewhere on the Apple site I can point
this out?

Re: Unexplained Mail

2014-09-21 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

Sorry about the delay - I was in the city all day and attending the Climate
Change Action rally (clumps of wet people standing around with umbrellas in the
chilly damp wind, worrying about warming weather).

My mail accounts are POP, and messages are removed immediately on downloading.
These are the same settings I had on my old machine. I am sure they are
correct, as Daniel did the transfer for me.

I noticed that when I sent the email to WAMUG this morning, that Mail said
“sending 3 of 3”, but there was only one. Curiously, when I downloaded the most
recent batch of mail, Mail said there were 18 messages and it downloaded 18
messages. So, nothing regular about it.

Thanks,
Pat

Unexplained Mail

2014-09-20 Thread Pat
I always use the little gear (flower?) icon at the bottom of the Mail window to
check what is on the mail server, and eliminate the ones I don’t want to
download. Just recently, I noticed that Mail was apparently downloading many
more emails than were listed on Get Account Info, however, they don’t actually
appear in my Mail boxes.

For instance, this morning, I checked Get Account Info and it listed 29 emails,
and this was what appeared in my Mail boxes, but while downloading, the
message was “downloading 77 of 77 emails”. Later, I checked Mail again, and 2
were listed, and downloaded, but Mail said “downloading 9 of 9 emails”. And
again, just now I checked what was on the server: 1 email, but the message was
“downloading 80 of 80”.

I don’t know how long this has been going on, but it is only in the last week
that I spotted the discrepancy. This is a new MacPro that I have only had for 6
weeks. It is running Mavericks 10.9.4 and Mail is Version 7.3 (1878.6).

What is going on? Has my Mac been compromised to send out spam or viruses?

2014-06-09 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni and Susan,

Thanks very much for your input. I’m vastly relieved that the problem seems to
be with the USB cord, but I wonder what makes such a thing go bad.

Thanks again!
Pat

iPad 2 update

2014-06-09 Thread Pat
I just tried the USB cable from the iPhone4, and now the iPad is charging while
plugged into the computer. If I remember correctly, this will do the job even
though it is a smaller cable. How important is it to have the correct connector?

Cheers,
Pat

iPad not charging

2014-06-09 Thread Pat
Help! iPad 2 won’t charge. It started out plugged into my computer for
updating - didn’t charge, didn’t make its happy little chirp. There is a small
icon I haven’t seen before next to the depleted battery icon: looks like a
slightly skewed arrow head. So then I plugged it into the mains supply, but it
is still not charging.

I hope it is not the end of my good little friend. Information solicited,
please!

Re: Changing Get Info permissions

2014-06-03 Thread Pat
Thanks very much, Ronni and Neil! It’s working.

Ronni, your Terminal suggestion opened it.

Neil, your Automator recipe didn’t work as it was, but I managed to alter it so
it did (beginner’s luck, I think, because I haven’t used Automator before).

So, the final recipe was: Get Specified Finder Items
wildfire-launcher.jar

Run Shell Script
cd /Applications/j-wildfire-1.62
sh start_mac.command

Get Specified Finder Items
j-wildfire.jar

And the application opens and runs. The application seems a little buggy for
Mac, because it often shows a grey working area, but clicking around may get it
going again. Or it might be because I use a stylus: some applications just
don’t work very well with a stylus.

I will try Parallels soon, just to compare the two different operating systems.

Anyway, thank you both for spending the time and effort to help me with this.
I’m very grateful.

Cheers,
Pat

Hi, Neil,

Here is the output from Terminal:

The start_mac.command is executable and is supposed to start the
j-wildfire-launcher.jar which is not executable which is in the directory lib,
which is executable. I tried the same Terminal method on it, but here is what
Terminal says about that:

Last login: Tue Jun 3 14:41:03 on ttys000
SpeedyGonzalez:~ pat$ /Applications/j-wildfire-1.62/start_mac.command ; exit;
Unable to access jarfile j-wildfire-launcher.jar
logout

There were no error messages, it’s just that there were no visible changes in
Get Info, and I couldn’t start the program.

> Alternatively, unless you really want to learn a lot more about terminal,

I haven’t yet tried Parallels yet, but will do so.

It can create very intricate and beautiful images. If you look at images of
‘Flame Fractals’ on Google, you will see what I mean.

Thank you very much for your assistance! It is much appreciated.

Hi, Ronni and Neil,

Thank you for the information and the cautions. Yes, I am cautious, but I trust
the developer. It is another case of interesting software written for Windows
and later, as an afterthought, ported to Mac. The forum shows a lot of other
disappointed Mac users also have trouble.

Unfortunately, Terminal didn’t fix the permission problems. I tried both
methods of typing the path and dragging the files.

Maybe I will have to fire up Parallels again, sigh.

Thanks!
Pat

Changing Get Info permissions

2014-06-01 Thread Pat
Hi, I downloaded a small graphics program which contains a special script for
starting the program on the Mac. However, these messages appear when I click it:

"The file “start_mac.command” could not be executed because you do not have
appropriate access privileges.

"To view or change access privileges, select the file in the Finder and choose
File > Get Info."

The Get Info panel says that I do have read and write privileges. I tried
restarting the computer, and searched WAMUG files using ‘Permissions’,
‘changing Permissions’ and ‘Get Info’ but found nothing appropriate.

Get Info suggested that Terminal could be used to fix the problem, but I don’t
know enough Unix to do that.

Advice will be much appreciated.

Safari can't find server

2014-05-13 Thread Pat
More and more often, when I start a search or click a URL, Safari puts up the
message that it can’t find the server. If I persist, it usually does find the
server eventually, after many attempts. I’m trying to find out if the
difficulty lies with Safari, with my ISP (iiNet) or the internet itself.

The URLs are just ordinary ones that I use all the time, so the problem must
lie elsewhere.

Does this sort of thing happen to other Wamuggers?

Cheers,
Pat

I closed the computer down yesterday, and just restarted it this afternoon.
Tried TextEdit and checked to see if it would replace all, and it does. So,

Thanks for the replies, Ronni and Severin.

Hi, Severin,

Thanks for your reply. However, I did look there for it, and looked again just

for Users/pat/Library, but I don’t see that either.

TextEdit corruption

2014-04-25 Thread Pat
I have been turning text into html. A collegue sends me text in emails. I copy
the text and paste it into TextEdit, then I copy and paste it into an html
editor. He sprinkles his text liberally with ampersand signs, &, which require
coding. To save time and effort, it is my custom to Find ‘&' and Replace All
with ‘and’ on the TextEdit page.

I hit some unknown 2-key combination accidentally, and all the text was
highlighted in a brilliant yellow colour. I clicked that away, but ever since,
the Find and Replace All does not work.

Is there some way to restore TextEdit to its former glory? In the old days,
there was usually an easily accessible .plist that could be thrown out, but I
couldn’t find one.

Hopefully,

Jumping Dock

2014-03-26 Thread Pat
I have a few complaints about the Mavericks OS, but they are probably of
interest only to those who use 2 or more monitors.

I am using 2 monitors and am building a website, by hand, using BBEdit as the
editing software. The left monitor is the larger one, and I put most of my
documents there while I work on the code.. The right monitor is where I preview
the results. I want the Dock to be at the bottom of the right monitor. However,
it keeps hopping over to the left.

This brings up an associated difficulty: where the focus on the Menu bar at the
top goes. I am constantly switching between BBEdit, and Safari. Half the time,
the ‘non focus’ menu bar is dimmed to the point of illegibility.

Three questions:
1. Is there any way to pin the Dock down so that it won’t flip around?

2. Is it possible to cause the Menu bars on both monitors to be highlighted?

3. Is it possible to prevent Safari from opening the Top Sites page every time
it is opened? It keeps coming back and cluttering up the view.

Thanks,
Pat

Re: InDesign won't launch in 10.9

Hi, Rod,

I don’t have any proven solutions, just a suggestion that you reinstall ID.

I have similar problems with Photoshop CS5 (I don’t use CS6 - don’t like it).
CS5 is steadily losing functionality: it now crashes instantly if I try to
print something, and there are a few other little glitches. I am about to take
my own advice and reinstall it.

The Adobe forums used to be a good source for solving problems, but it is now
essentially useless.

Good luck,

Re: QT behaviour

2014-02-26 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

I looked very hard for the original email but couldn’t find it; it would have
been about 7 or 8 years ago, different computer, different backup disk. Since
it has been such a long time, several different OSs intervening, I have decided
to cough up again for it and make sure, this time, that I keep the records
available.

(It didn’t make any difference whether I pressed the TAB key or the RETURN key,
and the Pro features are still greyed out when the file is loaded in the player
window.)

Thanks very much for your advice,

Re: Pages, Keynote, and Numbers Receive Minor Updates

I don’t use Pages very often, but recently I had a need to convert an .rtfd to
a .pdf. The latest version of Pages, 5.0.1, can not open the .rtfd (greyed out)

Fortunately for me, the older version remains on my system on a different hard

Re: Error Message -54

2013-12-15 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

Did all this. There were a lot of permissions to be repaired, mainly in Safari
and iTunes, and almost exclusively concerning foreign languages.

I did have permission to read and write to iTunes files, and the Lock box was
not selected.

So I guess I will just carry on and see if the message appears again.

Is there any harm in removing the foreign language files in Safari? I clicked
on the icon and asked to see the contents. I remember some years ago there was
an application called ‘Debablizer’ that ran through files and removed the ones
in unused languages. A Google search reveals that there is a Debabelizer app
but it is intended to help translate photos of signs in foreign languages.

Thank you very much for your help.

Wishing you a happy holiday season and all the best in the coming year.
Pat

iOS devices and iTunes

2013-12-14 Thread Pat
iTunes seems to be erratic about acknowledging my iDevices: iPhone and iPad.
Sometimes they can be in another room, but they still appear in iTunes. Other
times like today, I wanted to recharge and update the iPad by plugging it into
a wall socket and doing the syncing and updates by WiFi. But, even though the
iPad was right on the desk beside the Mac and just over a metre away from the
router, its name just wouldn’t appear in iTunes. The message on the iPad said
it was searching for the Mac, but it never found it.

I checked all the preferences, and the appropriate ones were all correct: WiFi
on, Sync by WiFi on, etc. Is there any way to prompt iTunes to recognise
nearby iDevices other than by plugging them into the computer?

This brings to mind a complaint I have about iOS updates: after an update, many
of my preference settings have been changed and I have to go through all of
them and reset them. It’s very annoying and time consuming.

Cheers,
Pat

with Apple support, but they seemed to have changed that part of their website.
Google butted in with a page full of error messages that seemed to have no
relevance.

So, is it saying that the app was not updated on my iTunes page interface? A
bug in iOS 7.0.4?

Cheers,
Pat

Re: Changing Apple ID for an iMac

2013-10-20 Thread Pat
I had this same problem with my husband's iPhone: I agreed to do the management
of it on my computer (he steadfastly refuses to learn anything about
computers). I tried to register the iPhone in his name, using a different Apple
ID and a different email address, but the Apple website simply wouldn't accept
that. To this day, it remains 'mine' in the eyes of Apple. He never buys apps
or music, so that isn't a problem.

There must be quite a few families that share one computer, so they must face
this problem all the time. Why doesn't Apple make it a bit easier?

Re: Cookies?

2013-10-16 Thread Pat
Peter's problems with the ABC site are a bit similar to my experiences,
although I don't log in to it. It just ignores certain things I do with Safari,
such as make comments or answer a poll question. If I want to do those things,
I use Firefox. I have written to the ABC about it several times, to no avail.

Re: A knotty question

2013-10-01 Thread Pat
I just got back to my computer at 4 pm and restarted. I am using Mountain Lion
10.8.5, Safari 6.0.5 and Firefox 23.0.1. The article I was commenting on was
The new economic nationalism, where comments are now closed. Safari is
reporting 55 (mine is there), and Firefox also says the same, and they are now
identical, so I have no idea why the previous difference.

I'm still puzzled, because this morning was a restart also.

Thanks very much, David, Ronni and Daniel.
Cheers,
Pat

AAarrrghh! I just went back to the two browsers and started comparing the
comments on them: they are completely different! Two distinct populations. This
makes me wonder if it is an ABC tactic to divided responses by browser, but I
can't see the point in that.

A knotty question

2013-09-30 Thread Pat
On and off, there have been mutterings that Safari browser isn't quite up to
scratch. I had hoped this was all in the past, but now I encounter a glaring
example.

I discovered long ago that the ABC website doesn't handle Safari well at all; I
was not able to post a comment using Safari. I could post using Firefox. I
wrote several letters to the ABC, suggesting that they bring their site up to
scratch. Eventually they did something, and now the problem is worse. I used to
be able to see and respond to their polls with Safari; now I can't.

But it gets worse. Last night, there was an opinion article that I wanted to
comment on, so I got out Firefox and did so. This morning, using Safari as
usual, I looked at the article and the comments: my comment was not there, and
the total of comments was 25.

So, fire up Firefox again, look at the site again. Firefox sees 54 comments,
mine among them.

I go back to Safari, refresh the page, and look again: still 25 comments.

What is going on? Is this purely a Safari problem? An ABC site problem? Or some
weird combination of both?

I suppose the simple answer is just to use Firefox, but I don't like its
interface and it is rather stupid in other ways. It would be nice to be able to
trust what Safari shows me, but it seems to be unreliable.

I don't really expect a solution from WAMUG, mainly just felt like venting -
sorry about that.

Thanks,
Pat

Serious questions for Apple

2013-09-25 Thread Pat
I have been a fan and a user of Apple devices for 18 years now, but this
article by George Monbiot has given me pause for thought:

http://permaculturenews.org/2013/09/25/apple-turnover/

If these allegations are true, more people should think twice about supporting
Apple products, and at least add their voices to questions asked of Apple that
need answers.

Re: Error message -54

2013-09-15 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

I followed your instructions, repaired permissions, checked the info on the
iTunes folder. I have Read & Write permission and the Locked box was not
ticked. However, the little lock icon at the bottom of the Info panel was shown
in a locked position, so I unlocked it. I finally got my hands on the iPhone
again, plugged it into the computer and finished the job: no pesty error
messages appeared. So, thank you very much. It would be great if the error
messages were not quite so cryptic!

Thanks again!

Hi, Ronni,

The iPhone was plugged into the computer for charging, backing up, and updating
apps, with iTunes open. I don't have the phone in hand at the moment - it's
gone for a walk, so I can't check - but I believe that was the whole message
plus the line 'Don't warn me again' with a checkbox.

Thanks,

Error message -54

2013-09-13 Thread Pat
I was recharging an iPhone 4, 16 GB with 11 GB free (not much on it!). It is
running iOS 6.1.3, which is apparently the correct OS for it.

However, the message, 'the iTunes Library could not be saved, error -54', began
appearing. I looked on the Apple Support page, got hundreds of hits for that
message, but I could not figure out how it applied to this iPhone 4.

What could it mean and what are the consequences??

It has two email addresses of the sender: Apple iTunes

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-30 Thread Pat
I have been following Ronni's suggestion that I close applications with Command
Option Q (haven't had any more episodes of 'forgetfulness' by the Mac). I just
wanted to mention that there are a few applications that do not respond to that
command, namely iTunes and Photoshop CS6. Just another oddity, I guess.

Thanks for the help!

2013-08-20 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

When closing down last night, I looked for the checkmark, but the box was not
ticked.

I guess I will just have to live with it. So far, it is just a little bit
annoying, but apparently not potentially calamitous. So, thank you very much,
Ronni and Daniel.

Re: Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-18 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

I usually do Command Q to quit an application, or sometimes right-clicking the
Dock icon and choosing 'Quit'. And I always cast an eye over the Dock icons to
be sure there are no longer any little white dots underneath.

In System Preferences, there are no Login items in Users & Groups.

In General, the box is ticked for Close windows when quitting an Application and
the Recent items is set at 10.

Thanks for your reply.

Mac getting forgetful

2013-08-17 Thread Pat
I close my Mac Pro, 10.8.4, down every night. Just before I shut it down, I
systematically close every open application. The last few months, when I start
the Mac up the next day, occasionally it comes up with all those applications
open, and it is now happening more frequently.

Is this a symptom of any know malady? Does anyone know what causes it? I do not
have any items in the Startupitems folder.

Re: New Mac OS

2013-06-12 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni and Daniel,
Thanks for your help.

Full of hope, I downloaded Keystroke Maestro (You can download it free for a
trial). I have never done much with scripting, so it was a bit of a hassle.
There isn't any easy way to get rid of false starts.

Here is how I made a macro with Keyboard Maestro:

Select the Global Macro Group. Then File>New macro (Command N)
Type the name of the new macro in the box.

Choose a trigger: click the Green + button and select 'Hot Key' and type a key
combination into the box. For my first one, called 'ArrowDown' I chose the
combination Shift Option Down Arrow.

Then click the green + New Action button
An action menu slides into view; scroll down to ‘simulate Scroll Wheel’. Drag
the tag into the empty box. Then choose the direction of scrolling and the
number of pixels you want. I thought 60 was reasonable for documents.

Then choose File>Export Macros.
This will create a folder called ‘Recordings’ in your Home Documents file. (You
can create a macro by using the 'Record' button, but it doesn't give you much
time to do your actions.)
You might need to click the ‘Enable’ button next to the Macro name.

Activation of these macros is sporadic and unpredictable. It can be difficult
to get them to act on the scroll bar you want (even wiggling it with the mouse
doesn't help much), and they frequently seem to ‘forget’ what they are supposed
to do. I restarted the computer just in case that helped, but it didn’t.

The instructions are minimal for those who don’t do much with scripting.
Several normal functions seem to be missing, like ‘Save’ or ‘Save as’.

I found the only way to begin a new macro was to close the application each
time I made one and then start it up again.

There are many potential macros that can be built, but I only tried the
scrollbar - I made all four directions. I think it may be of some value when
dealing with large documents, but I couldn’t use it with images, as it zooms
instead of scrolling. Also, you have to keep pressing the key combination to
continue scrolling in steps. So it really isn’t any better than Daniel’s
suggestion of using Command Arrow Key.

Perhaps Apple would consider making the presence of scroll arrows an options in
System Preferences
(DO YOU HEAR ME, APPLE? I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO WANTS THEM BACK!)
(apologies for shouting).

Anyway, many thanks,
Pat

Re: New Mac OS

2013-06-11 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,
Thanks for the reply.

My System Preference is set for 'always' for the scrolll bars. It is not the
scroll bar that is absent, but the pair of little pointer icons, 1 up and 1
down that we used to have, either both on one end of the scroll bar track or
one at the top and one at the bottom. I don't know their proper name.

I often have the task of navigating around a very large image in zoomed-in
mode, and also very large pdf files. Dragging or clicking the scroll bar causes
huge jumps, with no quick and easy way to get back to your starting point.

Another thought: are there any 3rd-party hacks that can add the little pointers?

Scrolling through windows has another nasty little habit: when you search for
an item and get a whole windowful, then clicking on something that looks
promising but turns out to be the wrong thing, then the whole window and all
its icons resets itself to the very top. So you have to navigate again through
all the items to find where you left off. Again, maybe slightly trivial, but
irritating and time-wasting.

Cheers,
Pat

2013-06-10 Thread Pat
I hope, most fervently, that Apple has returned the scrolling pointers to the
scroll bar. Their absence makes so many tasks frustrating, irritating, annoying
and time-wasting. I have made a vow to myself not to buy any new OS that does
not have them.

They are seemingly small things, but their value is immense.

Please, Apple………..?

Re: Safari gone wrong

2013-06-02 Thread Pat
Hi, Ronni,

Thank you so much. Removing the two plug-ins fixed the Safari problem. It was
a bit odd about Firefox: I hardly ever use it and there was an even older
version on my machine, so I had it check for an update and install it - that
turned out to be version 12.0! It never occurred to me that 12.0 was an old
version too. But all is remedied now.

Cheers and best wishes,
Pat

Safari gone wrong

2013-06-01 Thread Pat
I have suspected for some time that there is a problem with Safari on my Mac
Pro, running 10.8.3. If I download a pdf and try to save it with the command,
Save as…, it cannot be opened. The message is: "The file is damaged and could
not be repaired. A9RTCzj31.pdf".

This happens even with files that are intended to be downloaded by the public.

The other browser I use occasionally is Firefox, but it also is behaving
strangely and won't load a page, even though the task bar shows that it has.

My Safari is Version 6.0.4 (8536.29.13) and Firefox is 12.0.

Or could it be a more fundamental (hardware?) problem?

Help will be appreciated.

Safari handicap?

2013-05-22 Thread Pat
I was trying to post a comment on the ABC's Drum web page. Fixed it up with
Safari, and pushed the send button - many, many times over a long span. Didn't
send. Finally, I cranked up Firefox and pushed the send button, and it flew off
into the ether. Coincidence? Or does Safari have some kind of handicap or
prejudice against it?

Re: Strange iPhone messages

2013-03-15 Thread Pat
Thanks, everyone. That's reassuring. There were a few such spammish messages
popping up in some apps I used. I didn't realise that such intrusions would
leave strange, empty 'messages'.

By the way, it was Wikipedia that told me the 44 prefix was Kosovo.

I hope you are all having a good day.

Strange iPhone messages

2013-03-15 Thread Pat
I haven't had or used my iPhone for very long. Today, I just discovered some
strange phone numbers in the Message app. There are three numbers, one in
January, one in February and one in March. One is Australian (+61) and the
other two (different) numbers are (+44) which is apparently Kosovo!!!

There are no messages, just the numbers. What is going on? Has someone hacked
into my phone? Is there anything I should do about it, like try to contact
Telstra?

Advice urgently solicited!

Thanks,
