2013-02-01 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Rick,

My first response to this has only changed from SCAM to SCAM SCAM SCAM!!!

To add to my original comments:

*Request to be contacted by email first before bidding is a violation of eBay
TOS.

* $1200 "buy it now price" after the upgrades listed:
As I mentioned previously the price for the specifications you have listed for
the iMac is $4,873.99 AUD from Apple, and I know Apple don't give their
resellers anywhere near even 10% discount.

* The whole details page is a jpg image, designed to avoid eBay's automated
text scanning system that quickly flags scam auctions by looking for things
like "email me first" type text.

There is nothing about this that says legit. Anyone who falls for it is just
not paying enough attention.

> All this deal will be done safe and legal through eBay and We can use Bank
> Transfer .
> Just give me your full name and address.I will send this info's to eBay and
> they will contact you with an invoice

Oh yeah??? Not likely!!
Once you go out of eBay to contact this person, you are outside eBay's payment
system.
That way he just runs off with the money, never sends the item which he very,
very obviously does not have, and you have no way to get your money back.

The others you have listed also scream SCAM. Same email address and again the
whole details page is a jpg image.

.My advice is don't have contact with this person, buy one of the New iMacs
through an Apple Reseller. As a general rule, you can expect much greater
expertise and assistance from a dedicated specialist Apple Reseller than you
can from say a Dick Smith or similar store who you would be lucky to find even
one person on staff who even uses an Apple computer and doesn't know the first
thing about how to deal with problems.

I can only give my advice, what you choose to do with that advice is entirely
up to you.

Cheers,
Ronni

2013-02-01 Thread Daniel Kerr
Dodgy written all over it, so from the start….
it also has two lots of RAM listed in it. It comes with 8GB 1333MHz RAM, then
the line underneath that is 16GB 1333MHz RAM.
That's the previous model. All the current models use 1600MHz RAM.
So they may be "new", but it's not the "new new" current iMac.

If it's too good to be true,..it probably is. Or you might receive an iMac
box,..about the right weight….with ….bricks.
:o)

Trust me,..there is no way that much margin in the Apple gear. Hence why Apple
themselves (i.e. the AppleStores) never discount.
Even when places like JBHiFi or Dick Smith have a 10% off Apple sale. They're
losing money. Most resellers may a lot less then 10% on an Apple product. Plus
when you factor in overheads and Credit Card fees they have to pay,…they make
very little on it.
So no way someone could sell it, without losing a LOT of money at those sort of
prices if it was brand new, never used. (unless it fell off the back of a
truck) :o)

But yes,..something is said about buying "local". At least you can see it
before you get it. And talk to the person. Even stuff coming from overeast via
eBay I'd be a bit worry of it. If something happens on the way over,..seller
may say, it was fine when it left,…courier will say,..sorry our insurance
doesnt cover it,..you should cover it…etc etc…..

Just my 2cents worth,…. :)))
Hope something there helps,…….

Kind regards
Daniel

this is the one 35 bids and sold for $1,325.00 with $3.50 postage from NSW
It seems someone has hacked into the listings and added his direct email

Re: eBay Purchases

2013-02-01 Thread Walter Haenel
Good Morning all,

I just looked at the item on ebay. It's located in NSW - not in the UK.
Why are you thinking of iMacs "from the UK" Rick ?

Cheers,
Walter

 Hi Again Rick,

I just rechecked my price for the specifications you have given and I had
not included the 768GB Flash Storage that you mentioned in your Specs.
So the price for the specifications you have listed for the iMac is
$4,873.99 AUD... Not $3,313.99 that I posted below.
And you think they are going to ship that configuration iMac to Australia
 for $1,200?

Hi Adam,

The AFL Grand Final is about to start, so very quickly before I have to support
my beloved 'Pies'

Try reducing the size of the file you are uploading. 802kb to something under
200kb
150kb and use Basic Upload?

Cheers,
Ronni
Go 'The Pies'!

Firstly, with this problem I did what a journalist was found to have recently
done and googled for some information - but unlike that journalist I applied my
mind critically to the results but didn't get any answers.

So, I turn to you smart people to give me a hand. I turn to the questions
kindly set out by Ray.

1. Version of Safari you are using

Version 5.1

2. Version of MacOS you are using

Version 10.7.1

3. File type of photo you are uploading (TIFF, PSG, JPEG etc)

Photo is a JPEG

4. Filesize of photo you are uploading

802kb

A logout and login won't get me access to the internet through Safari. It also
seems to stop Mail accessing the internet.

I tried using Firefox (5.0.1) and no luck with the upload but it didn't kill
access to the internet.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adrian,

Link 1 is located in Melbourne (& not even spelt correctly).
And as Daniel has mentioned it does not have the original box.
I agree with everything Daniel has mentioned.
Item location: melburne, Victoria, Australia
Also the Photos are not of the Item for sale but very similar?
PHOTOS ARE NOT OF THE ITEM FOR SALE BUT VERY SIMILAR
Also OS X NOT installed? I would take that to mean there is no operating system
installed on this iMac & you would need to purchase OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
I would also imagine it doesn't come with the Original Discs also
I don't feel happy about this item Adrian. I would be hesitant to purchase
without knowing a lot more about this iMac.
Os X NOT installed

I would not like you see you purchase a "shonky deal". I'm not saying this is a
"shonky deal", but I would advise you to be extremely careful.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: eBay Macs

2011-02-16 Thread Daniel Kerr

As Susan has pointed out, the other 2 are local pickup or overeast only.
Also, don't be surprised for them to go higher as it gets closer to the end
of the auction.
The last few completed 24" models of similar specs sold for $800-$1000 in
the last week approximately.
You also then have to factor in the fright cost, which generally won't
include insurance. If something breaks along the way,..it's at your expense.
(You have to argue out with the seller or shipping company about it, and it
can get quite messy). Insurance can quite easily factor in another $100+
I notice they list $10 insurance. $50 freight and $10 insurance seems all a
little cheap to get it over here to WA from there, based on prices I've seen
previously. Plus he lists it doesn't have the original box.

Without an original box, I'd be a bit cautious shipping those things.

Just my 2cents worth.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Re: eBay

Hi Malcolm,

Depending on whether you are buying, selling (or both), there are a
few issues to consider. For selling, price and service are important.
Some information on the Paymate vs PayPal:
http://om4.com.au/dilip-rao-on-paypal-vs-paymate-for-online-payments/

If you don't have a lot of need for customer support (ie. you are good
at resolving any issues that arise yourself through
documentation/forums), PayPal is a good option. If you want access to
better customer service, perhaps check out Paymate.

Hi Mac,

Lots of do's and lots of dont's Mac! ;-)

Take note of Tom's advice below.

Certainly create and pay using a PayPal Account. I've been using

Buying on eBay, make sure you check the sellers reputation and do

check the serial number for me if the seller provides me with one.
She also advised there have been no reports of internal theft.
Apple also said there is no warranty if the seller is not an Certified
Australian wholesaler or retailer.

Thanks

Re: Ebay

2008-07-06 Thread Rob Davies

Morning,

Accept it is a risk and take precautions.

Ask for serial numbers of machine, also provide boot rom version,
model identifier.

These give you some scope for seeing if it is stolen from Apples list.
Also if specifications actually match build time and machine specifics.

Organise own courier to do pick up giving them the cheque, money order
or authorisation to confirm credit details.
Although PayPal does offer insurance on some things I would check
their validation process, but it is a guarantee of sorts. Also some
credit cards offer this same protection over the eCommerce world, but
again check before. eBay does have some form of assistance that
changes frequently so read there disclosure statements.

Besides all of the above try locally first, this site has a few people
with machinery offers, also local retailers?

It always is a gamble, as is life. But, in this time frame their are
ways of verifying; hence, minimising the risk protecting ones own
assets or some form of compensation if it goes wrong. Do the homework
and assess your level of risk. If it sounds to good to be true then
it more than likely is false, again assess risk.

Applecare is a good insurance that machine works, if available on
required hardware, as it is transferrable being item specific, but
validate against machine information. Also be prepared for an
extremely long replacement or repair scenario if required, as Apple
Australia are notoriously slow with this scenario of bought and
replacement or repair required.

Now saying that I find eBay an annoying way of purchasing equipment,
but have done so a few times saving monetary value, but utilised a lot
of personal time to achieve. Yes, have had one go bad, but thanks to
credit company was a minimal $50 on a substantial acquisition of 7K,
done the homework minimising the loss. Applecare have had a couple of
instances one that was replaced although not with similar standing,
but was replaced. Other was repaired, but extremely slow in both
cases, a 3 month scenario on first case still pending on outcome, and
9 weeks on second to replace power supply - CPU.

Cheers!

Yes ...but some of the scammers are able to manufacturer good

It's one thing to put at risk one or two or three hundred dollars ...

When you say refuses to connect, is there any specific error message
from eBay (presuming it is ebay.com.au)? What is the last action being

Have you checked Safari's Activity Window (under Window menu) and

Thanks to everyone who replied re my ebay query. Never fear - I
wasn't actually going to buy it - a new machine like that, I want a
warranty and a local service to fall back on - but I appreciate how
quickly I was warned off.

I thought it must be a scam, but I have seen other stuff on ebay
(yes, Newtons) that I was interested in, and wondered if the whole
of ebay was a just a giant scamfest.

I've bought several hundred dollars worth of things off eBay, and
have always got what I ordered relatively quickly. The trick is
knowing what to buy from whom :)

I've also heard bad things about Paypal, and this is sad, because
there are a few software demo sites that I would love to buy from,
but I am not willing to use paypal to do it. Are there any secure
alternatives out there?

I haven't had any problems with PayPal (BTW, it's owned by eBay).
Just remember that it's not a bank. As such it isn't subject to the
same financial rigours (but then again, it doesn't charge you the
same fees either :). I wouldn't put my life savings in it, and my
PayPal account isn't linked to a credit card with a huge limit.

eBay are also usually happy to co-operate with law enforcement types
to help stamp out scams, so it's not like there's anything shonky
with the eBay company itself.

Have fun,

Re: Ebay - my $.02

2004-03-27 Thread Mrs C
Hi Everyone:

My husband and I have sold about $5,000-$7,000 worth of stuff, big and
small, on eBay. We have always been paid by the consumers, and they have
always been happy with their purchases (as our feedback shows). The most
expensive single item we sold was $1,000. The cheapest? $10.

We have bought lots of stuff from eBay as well, but nothing like the same
price tag. Using a credit card is good advice. So is actually speaking to
the individual to make sure that they exist--you can ask them for a phone
number and have a discussion about the item. I wouldn't buy something on
eBay which costs more that $1,000, though. And I tend to purchase items from
stores on eBay, rather than individuals, if the item is expensive.

There are some guidelines on eBay as to how to trade safely, but it is
always a risk. That is why a credit card is such a good idea.

At the moment I have several items on eBay: a mobile cable, eyeglasses, and
unopened toner cartridges.

Tell me where else I could sell all that stuff in one place so cheaply! I
really like the service!!

My understanding is that Paypal tends to be pretty good in general, but
has poor protection against loss from fraud, in strong contrast to the
credit card system we have here.

I bought a Fender Guitar Pickup for $90 and a MOTU 828 Firewire 8 channel
digital music recording interface for $600 on eBay. Both items were bought
from eBay "shops" run by dealers in America and both were delivered via USPS
within 10 days of the auction closing. Both items were delivered as
advertised in perfect condition. I paid for both items using Paypal and have
used Paypal for buying software and hardware over the net for several years
now without any problems at all. I am not aware of any problems with the
Paypal system but I'm always willing to be enlightened.

BTW I'm going to sell the MOTO-828 as it's surplus to my needs since I got a
Digidesign Mbox so if anyone is in the market for an 8 channel recording
interface with ADAT optical and SPDIF connections email me and I'll send you
more detail. It works with any ASIO compliant multitrack software including
Cubase, Nuendo, Digital Performer and Logic.

Offer to buy with a credit card (about the only payment method that
offers real buyer protection). Watch the seller run and hide. Chalk it

To All re ebay
This type of auction "pre-apporoved bidder type " is currently under
investigation by several agencies. The auctions are run by individuals
who have stolen anothers email identity and use it to list items on
ebay. A trick to picking the cons is to see what the seller has sold
in the past and I bet it wasn't computer gear. They will ask you to
depoisit money through western union and also say they are sending you
a UPS booking number. They may also give you some bull about it being
part of a bankrupt store sale OS. UPS will give anyone a booking
number without sending goods as they give out quote numbers for
transport. Please report to ebay and if you get caught the federal
police who will take details of the site/auction. Also there is the
escrow service that ebay offer however the scammers will give you a
reason why they can't do that.

It is similiar to scams running involving cheap plasma screens, digital
cameras, large LCD screens. most are coming out of central Europe and
are very difficult/almost impossible to track.

Buyer beware.

Note ebay only give fraud protection to $400 and then its all your
cost. .

In closing if you can't touch it don't buy it.
Talk soon

Slightly off topic, but is it 'safe' to buy things from Ebay? I just

noticed a dual 2gig >>G5 with 500 gig of 7200rpm drives, an apple 23

other bells and whistles going for $3800.

Usually if it's too good to be true, it probably is!

There are a number of e-bay con artists selling either stuff that

doesn't exist, or stuff

that's stolen. My rule is usually don't spend more than you can afford

to lose.

Definitiely a scam of sorts.

Important points with this particular one:

"Note: This listing is restricted to pre-approved bidders or buyers
only.

Email the seller to be placed on the pre-approved bidder/buyer list. "

(ie: Please sign up for our spam list and get hassled to buy all sorts
of

junk :)

and the Feedback shows that bob6960_0 apparently hasn't ever sold
anything

on Ebay (but has bought an odd assortment of Xbox and elctronics gear).
Identity fraud on eBay is a potential problem to watch out for. (ie:
sellers hijacking someone's account that has reasonable positive
feedback)

I've used eBay a number of times with no problems whatsoever, but you
do

need to be able to spot a scam, and do your homework. I'd _always_
contact the seller prior to placing a bid, and prefer to "buy local",
so I

can see the goods before parting with my hard-earned.

This one is a long running Scam (well as long as the G5's have been

similar sort of auction said what happened was that you had to
register to bid (auction is open only to "approved bidders") and then
they ask you for your credit card details before you start bidding so
that they can "ensure that payment is made by the winning bidder".
... of course you can see where this is heading .. fortunately
my friend had a card which was maxed out so there was nothing left to
steal - when I spoke to her she realised how silly she had been and
immediately canceled the card.

this VERY G4 auction, compleat with same graphics and text, goes
around the different e-bay regions the last one I saw was a few
weeks back "based" in Italy.

I'm surprised it's stayed up there for as long as it has as e-bay
usually pulls these obvious (and repeat) scams within a couple of days

No bids are ever accepted - because they don't want a realistic
market price to drive away bargain hunters who might say "hey what
the heck!"

Their "high ratings" by other e-bay users are fabricated by a
conducting a multitude of fake auctions of small items with "buy now
at this price" options which are immediately "purchased" by a small
number of "buyers" who then post a multitude of glowing but
identical testimonials (even down to the same spelling and
grammatical mistakes), sometimes the process goes the other way round
with the holder of the auction "buying" a similar amount of similar
"goods" from a similar amount of "sellers" who give the similar
glowing "testimonial reviews".

At best they havest your e-mail for spam at worst it is outright
credit/ identity theft.

When things are too cheap to be good I would be cautious - there are a lot
of scams on ebay...

grammatical mistakes), sometimes the process goes the other way round
with the holder of the auction "buying" a similar amount of similar

glowing "testimonial reviews".

At best they havest your e-mail for spam at worst it is outright
credit/ identity theft.

When things are too cheap to be good I would be cautious - there are a lot
of scams on ebay...

 Hi All

Slightly off topic, but is it 'safe' to buy things from Ebay? I just
 noticed a dual 2gig G5 with 500 gig of 7200rpm drives, an apple 23
inch cinema display and all the other bells and whistles going for
 $3800.

It has been up for seven days, has about six hours to go and has no bids on
 it.

How do you know that you're not buying stolen goods? It sounds pretty
sus - I figure that combination to be more like $8000 worth.

Any good/bad/don't even think about it stories about Australian ebay?

 cheers

what was really really ahead of it's time was that it was the first
consumer "computer" to be equipped with a RISC processor... in terms
of actual FLOPS it was also one of the fastest consumer "computers"
in it's time - of course most of those instructions were chewed up
for doing handwriting recognition .

Even more amusing is that the ARM technology was originally used in
the BBC Archimedes, successor to the BBC micro. Apple invested in
ARM, and the technology was later bought by Intel and is now used in
all these handheld PC's and Palms because of its high effiency and
low power consumption. Conveniently, this would make reviving Newton
OS somewhat easier I'd imagine, as the processor's already out there
in all these machines...

BTW, there's a Newton Wikipedia entry

On a related note, does anyone have an old Newton that they want to
sell? I have an original Newton that I have just got going after
about 8 years and its so cool I'm thinking a 2000 model (is that
what they were called?) would be even more fun. It even does the
'puff-of-smoke' thing just like deleting something on OSX. Talk

Even in mere MHZ the later newtons trounced the then current Pentium
1's which were at 66 Mhz vs the Newtons 2000's 160'ish Mhz - of
course then the Pentium II came out later that year and at a
blistering 200Mhz wiped the newtons off the map ;)

I treat ebay like gambling - spend as much as you would be willing to gamble
at the casino. $4000 is a lot of moolah to gamble though..

As for a Newton 2000 or 2100, good luck in finding one! Those that have
them hold on to them with dear life now, and if you do find someone that is
willing to part with theirs, expect $500 plus asking price. I met one guy
at the Joondlaup AppleCentre once that had 4 2100s - one he used daily, the
other three locked away in a safe still in their boxes and shrinkwrap. His
whole life was in that Newton!

Definitiely a scam of sorts.

Important points with this particular one:

"Note: This listing is restricted to pre-approved bidders or buyers only.
Email the seller to be placed on the pre-approved bidder/buyer list. "

(ie: Please sign up for our spam list and get hassled to buy all sorts of
junk :)

and the Feedback shows that bob6960_0 apparently hasn't ever sold anything
on Ebay (but has bought an odd assortment of Xbox and elctronics gear).
Identity fraud on eBay is a potential problem to watch out for. (ie:
sellers hijacking someone's account that has reasonable positive feedback)

I've used eBay a number of times with no problems whatsoever, but you do
need to be able to spot a scam, and do your homework. I'd _always_
contact the seller prior to placing a bid, and prefer to "buy local", so I
can see the goods before parting with my hard-earned.

ebay seems safe but I have only spent up to Au$400.00. I wouldn't be game to
spend over Au$3000.00
I have had a quick look at eBay australia only and couldn't see it.
Could it be on the international site and in american dollars.

There are a number of e-bay con artists selling either stuff that
doesn't exist, or stuff that's stolen. My rule is usually don't spend

Re: ebay G5 bargain

2004-01-14 Thread Steven Tan
I also have noticed this new spam trend lately. It started with some "too good
to be true" deals on Macs. The other day when I placed a bid on a mobile phone
on eBay, I get a surprise when I found 10 emails from supposedly other eBayers
to ask if I want to get the same phone from them (very cheap of course). Now I
am getting these emails on a daily basis, which is very annoying.
I am not sure how they obtained my direct email address, or is it some bug in
eBay that allows them to send email to me via the "Ask seller a question" when
I am not even the seller!
I have emailed ebay about this but have yet got a reply from them.
