Trouble installing WinXP into Virtual PC 7
Hi WAMUGgers I'm trying to install Win XP Pro into Virtual PC 7.0.1 on my PowerBook G4 1.67 with 1GHz RAM and 100Gb HDD running OS X 10.4.5. It has sat on Installing Windows/Installing Devices for 10 hours now, with the message Setup will complete in approximately: 33 minutes. I've tried Shutting Down the PC (in PC Menu), saving the partly installed PC image state. VPC recognises this as a partially installed state, reloads and resumes installing. ie the green flashing installation dots continue moving, but it stays at 33 minutes. How long is a minute in Windows? What am I doing wrong? Should I delete the image and start again? The VPC 7 disk is one supplied through the WA DET Microsoft Enterprise Agreement and WinXP comes from the school's Microsoft Technology in Schools CD Kit 2002. Many thanks Reg

Based on what you have said I would probably begin again. It may also pay to check if there could be any issues between VPC 7.0.1 and OSX 10.4.5. It does sound like a familiar scenario however, where on a perfectly good PC something goes fatal during an XP install and simply starting again with the same setup/configuration will work. What fun! My experience with VPC has shown me that Windows 2000 is 'slightly' better and/or faster than both 98 and XP, not that that will help you though :-( Good luck Paul

Virtual PC and Mac - security
Because I need to run one particular Windows app on my G5 iMac (MS Visio), I am now running Virtual PC (v 7.02 with XP Professional 2002 SP 2). Not ideal, but necessary for my business. My question relates to security. I'm pretty confident about Mac security, but with Windows running within it, I'm interested in what security precautions to take. For example, should the Windows firewall be on? Do I need to install the regular Windows OS updates. Note I don't run any Windows email, so consider anti-virus to be unnecessary. I have only had to use Explorer once, to access a trusted site that doesn't support Safari/Firefox - so I also consider anti-spyware to be unnecessary also. Note I'm connected to the Internet via ADSL with a NAT router. So I'll raise the other niggling question - without Virtual PC running, should the Mac firewall be on or not? I've heard conflicting positions on whether the NAT router is adequate protection or not. Any advice appreciated. Regards, Glenn.

Hi Glen Sorry to hear your situation ;-) I personally wouldn't let windows near the net without AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Despite whether I believe they are truly necessary or not, I see their function as integral. They aren't big and they are free and simple. You could use equivalent software if you like, those are just the titles I recommend. I cant emphasise the iffy security of IE enough. Given what you have said, Windows OS updates should only be necessary *if* the normal operation of the OS and programs specifically require it. You can, given enough patience, install just required updates. Also it may improve your mileage if you turn off: Active desktop Screen saver Auto shut-down/sleep Messenger service Auto updates Off-line files System recovery Menu fading/transition, window animation(?) (plus a few other items on the same list in Display panel, this is from memory as I don't have access to XP at this juncture; HOORAY!) If you think windows is crashy then under VPC you might find it worse without these kind of precautions. A stitch in time... Good luck Paul
Re: Virtual PC and Mac - security
Hi, I admin a bunch of WinXP systems at work, and this answer is made from that experience: Paul wrote: My question relates to security. I'm pretty confident about Mac security, but with Windows running within it, I'm interested in what security precautions to take. For example, should the Windows firewall be on? Unless you need to disable it for some specific reason, yes. More layers of protection rarely hurt. Do I need to install the regular Windows OS updates. You absolutely must keep it up to date. E-mail is not the only exploit vector. For example, the recent WMF security hole could probably attack you through a Visio file with an embedded WMF image. Note I don't run any Windows email, so consider anti-virus to be unnecessary. That's not entirely true, but you'll probably be fine. I'd recommend installing and using AVG from grisoft.com anyway. If you're confident you can avoid getting the system infected, I wouldn't bother letting it remain resident, instead just run scans occasionally. Mostly though it's safer to let it run resident (continuous scanning essentially). I have only had to use Explorer once, to access a trusted site that doesn't support Safari/Firefox - so I also consider anti-spyware to be unnecessary also. You're probably OK there. I wouldn't want to use any persistent/resident spyware scanner (many of which cause more problems than they solve), but do consider using something like AdAware from lavasoft.de to do scans every few months. Note I'm connected to the Internet via ADSL with a NAT router. So I'll raise the other niggling question - without Virtual PC running, should the Mac firewall be on or not? I've heard conflicting positions on whether the NAT router is adequate protection or not. A NAT router makes it difficult to initiate a connection to your systems from the outside world. The extremely basic firewalls in Mac OS X and Windows XP are intended to do much the same thing. Things that can make it through NAT (e-mail borne nasties, IRC / instant messenger attacks, browser exploits, etc) will most often also make it through the XP and Mac OS X firewalls. That said, unless you specifically need to disable the firewall for some reason, leave it enabled. I personally wouldn't let windows near the net without AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm firewall. I agree with regards to AVG, though if you're a careful and informed user you can usually get away without running it in resident mode. I think ZoneAlarm is unncessary for most users with XP SP2, and it can cause more problems than it solves. I've had to fix more Windows boxes that broke due to ZoneAlarm (conflicts, bad upgrades, broken uninstalls, etc) than due to viruses. I cant emphasise the iffy security of IE enough. This is especially true right now, where any website can take total control of your computer through an image. That means that (eg) some web forums will permit another poster to put up an image that'll control your computer. Given what you have said, Windows OS updates should only be necessary *if* the normal operation of the OS and programs specifically require it. You can, given enough patience, install just required updates. Noo! Just turn on automatic updates. It's low fuss (though sometimes really annoying about bugging you to reboot), works well, and won't break things. Also it may improve your mileage if you turn off: Active desktop Screen saver Auto shut-down/sleep Messenger service Auto updates I'd recommend leaving automatic updates enabled. Off-line files System recovery By disabling system restore, you turn off the ability to repair your system after a bad program/driver install. This can cost you a lot of time and frustration, since while it's turned off it doesn't collect any of the information needed to do recovery. It does have a small but detectable performance impact. Despite that I'd recommend leaving it on unless you keep backups of your Virtual PC disk images somewhere, or are willing to risk the possibility of having to erase and start again. Menu fading/transition, window animation(?) (plus a few other items on the same list in Display panel, this is from memory as I don't have access to XP at this juncture; HOORAY!) These are important, they cause surprisingly large slowdowns especially under emulators. Switching the Windows XP theme back to the older Windows 2000 style also puts a real rocket behind the OS. IIRC you can do this in the Display control panel, or right click on the desktop background and chose properties. I'm not 100% sure as I'd have to reboot to check, and I'm using a real OS right now. -- Craig Ringer
Re: Virtual PC and Mac - security
Thanks all for your responses, I've changed XP based on the recommendations (or the ones I could follow anyway) and it seems to run faster. Security wise, I'm a lot more comfortable now. VPC says Shared Networking uses NAT, which would suggest the Windows PC is effectively hidden (as much as the Mac) from external intrusions. Points about AVG and firewalls noted. I'll keep XP auto updates on. I did look carefully at OmniGraffle. It supports Visio 2002 files (not Visio 2003). It also doesn't have equivalent functionality (that I could see anyway) for preparing business process diagrams (Visio has very good cross functional flowchart components). I'll keep tracking OmniGraffle though, looks interesting. By the way, I ran the GRC 'Shields Up' (grc.com), and it shows all ports closed except ftp, telnet and http (this is both from the Mac and from the VPC). Any idea why this is, and if (and how) they can be turned off? Thanks again. Glenn. On 07/01/2006, at 4:44 PM, Craig Ringer wrote: Hi, I admin a bunch of WinXP systems at work, and this answer is made from that experience: Paul wrote: My question relates to security. I have only had to use Explorer once, to access a trusted site that doesn't support Safari/Firefox - so I also consider anti- spyware to be unnecessary also. You're probably OK there. I wouldn't want to use any persistent/ resident spyware scanner (many of which cause more problems than they solve), but do consider using something like AdAware from lavasoft.de to do scans every few months. I personally wouldn't let windows near the net without AVG anti- virus and ZoneAlarm firewall. It does have

Re: Virtual PC and Classic
Diana This may or may not be related to your problem - I had an authentication problem with CUPS where I would put in my admin username and password when requested and it would fail to authenticate every time. The reason being that there was a change in the way passwords were stored from Jaguar to Panther and CUPS couldn't read from the new system. I was able to overcome the problem by editing the CUPS config file to reduce security. It may be that there is a similar problem with VPC - perhaps that's drawing a long bow. My suggestion however, is to remove VPC (how to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=824659product=vpcmac) and reinstall it and the updates - up to 5.0.4 I think. Hello WAMUGers, This question is for any Mac people researching their family history. I gave my sister 'Reunion' and she has been researching our Family History for some time. She has run into a problem and I quote what she has said below : 'Virtual PC'. It is apparently necessary for we Mac Owners to be able to use the Historical Indexes CD's now available for Genealogical researchers. All these CD's are made only for Windows - very silly! A fellow researcher at the Genealogical Society, yesterday told me about it when I was aghast to find they only operated on PC's. Is this correct, will she have to use 'Virtual PC' on her beautiful 14 iBook OSX10.3.4 ? She will not be happy if she has to install anything 'PC' on 'Big-i' ! Thanking you for any help. Cheers, Ronni When Microsoft asks you, Where do you want to go today? Tell them, Apple!
Re: Virtual PC
Hi Ronni Regrettably, she's right. We run a genealogy business and have two Macs. Last year we bought a second hand Toshiba laptop for the dual reason of (1) running some of the many CDs that are now available (that usually have their own proprietary Windoze 'viewers' associated with them) and (2) trying out the very many genealogical software packages available for PCs. Prior to that we'd been running the CDs on virtual PC, but we became sick of the sluggishness and didn't want to pay for a full upgrade to OSX (and it wasn't available at the time). The good news is that Reunion is by far the best of all the available software packages for any computer. The top seller in the PC world is Family Tree Maker, which is really clunky and can't match Reunion in many areas, such as charts. I've just bought virtual PC v6.1 with windows XPpro (as part of the Office X pro package) I have a couple of questions for any Virtual PC v6.1 users out there: 1) Virtual PC comes on two CDs. I successfully installed on my 800MHz G4 15 iMac (running OSX 10.2.8). All this from the first disc - I was never asked for the second disc. The second disc is labelled Additional system files and by inspection contains 483.4MB of Windows files (5474 items). There are no read me or text files. Does anyone know what these files are, what they are used for, in what circumstances I would need them?? 2) When I'm on the road, I'll need to install on my 400MHz G4 Ti Powerbook and I was thinking of installing OSX on the powerbook. The documentation say that VPC 6.1 will run on OSX or OS9 but that it needs a 500 MHz or faster processor in OSX - which rules out the powerbook. Presumably I can run VPC if I boot up in OS9 - would that mean that I should be booted in OS9 when I install it. Does VPC install different versions of the software for OSX/OS9. If not and I mistakenly try to start VPC when in OSX what might happen: - it refuses to launch - it tries hangs - it launches but is not usable - it brings the mac to its knees the first three would not be a problem but the last would be a worry - is there any potential to crash/corrupt OSX. The powerbook only has a 10GB drive so I don't want to partition - presumably it would be OK to have OS9, OSX VPC on the same partition provided I restarted in OS9 before launching VPC. Virtual PC 6 question (dynamic drive?)
I've just a quick question - I've had a users computer dropped on my desk and he's run out of disk space on his VP 6 boot drive. I've fixed it by making a new fixed drive of 5 GB and copied his data from the old drive BUT I thought that the whole point of the dynamic drive system in VC was that it could dynamically increase/decrease its size as you deleted/created/installed/uninstalled files apps on it? ps: yes tried the zero unused option -- ~ Mark Secker [EMAIL PROTECTED] ph#9380 1855 (ECEL) ECEL Computer Support Officer, University of Western Australia. RE: Virtual PC 6 question (dynamic drive?)
Mark with the dynamic drive size option, it will only expand and contract to the maximum size that it is defined up to. If the user only made their drive with un upper limit of say 3Gb, it wont grow past that, regardless of how much real hdd space is left. sTEVE -Original Message- From: Mark Secker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, 2 September 2003 12:45 PM To: WAMUG Mailing List Subject: Virtual PC 6 question (dynamic drive?) The Professional version includes VPC 6.1 On checking at the MS US Mac site, sure enough: Office Academic - US$149/AUD$229 equiv Office Standard - US$399/AUD$613 equiv Office Std (upgrade)- US$239/AUD$367 equiv Office Professional - US$499/AUD$767 equiv Office Pro (upgrade)- US$329/AUD$506 equiv and Office pro does, indeed include VPC6.1 + WinXP Pro This seems to be a significant saving (US$149 on item total of US$(249+399=648) Unfortunately, I can't see an equivalent on the Apple Oz site and, in fact, Office OSX alone is listed at AUD $999 ($619 upgrade). So - to get the equivalent functionality to the new Office pro (US$499/AUD$767 equiv) here would be $499+$999=$1498 (ie ~ 95% more) One would hope that the equivalent product would be offered here? Hopefully at less than AUD$1000 (or 30% above US price equivalent) anybody out there heard anything confirming/denying this? Also, is it possible to buy the US product and will it work OK with Oz systems. Cheers Neil -- Neil R. PC format CDs and Virtual PC - Again
After a year I have now managed to get a replacement of my 1891 Census CD. It arrived damaged but I am assured it was OK when it left. It also had a customs declaration which was missing when I got it. It was opened by Australia Post for Customs Inspection by someone who left greasy finger prints on the case; on the CD a long hair, several bits of junk and a scratch right across the surface, which to me looks like deliberate damage. I cleaned off the junk and tried it. The G4 can see it and open it but VPC does not see it. I burned a copy which works like a charm, the program runs fast. [The copy I made of the previous CD, which had a deep cut, ran very slowly]. Can anyone suggest why this is happening? These two are the only PC CDs I have ever tried which do not work normally with VPC. Could it be a glitch in my CD drive? I have a G4 Quicksilver 933 MHz, 512 M RAM in OS 9.2.2 with a DVD-R, CD-RW. I got the update for the CD driver but later I wiped the system partition and re-installed 9.2.2. When I updated the system the CD update was on the list but when I tried to run it I was told it had already been done. I did have one other CD problem, a box of CDs which the G4 just spat out. This box was several years old so I just assumed they had deteriorated. Diana (feeling old and confused this morning)
PC format CDs and Virtual PC
Are some PC CDs unreadable by VPC? I have a number of PC CDs and I have never had any problems before, apart from having to put up with the clunky way Windoze runs. Now I have a problem which may be due to the CD being damaged but I am not sure. The full story is below. I wonder if it is caused because Windows 98 SE supplied with VPC 5 is not 'real' Windows but a special edition for the Mac. Should I use my 'real' Windows 98 disk which came with VPC 2.1 to create a new drive? Diana * I have a CD from an English Family History Society which arrived damaged. My efforts to get them to replace it have failed. The main reason is because I told them I was running it on a Mac using Virtual PC and they say this is the problem, not the damage to the CD. The CD was posted with a small booklet in an envelope, no proper packing (they have admitted this should not have happened). The jewel case is broken along one edge and the CD has a short deep cut near the middle which only just runs into the data area. Originally I tried it on my PowerBook using VPC 2.1, it was very slow but at least I knew it would run. But on my Quicksilver G4 512 M Ram, System 9.2.2, Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 (MMC3) Drive and VPC 5 it would not run at all. The Mac can see the CD but the PC can't, tells me the drive is not ready. I tried the CD on a PC at the local genealogy society (WAGS) and it runs but very slowly, compared to the WAGS copy of the same CD. WAGS Mine Surname Search: 5 sec 27 sec Enum. Notebook: 5 sec 30 sec Having given up hope of a replacement I used Toast 5 to make a copy of the CD and VPC 5 can see it! Using it I could not run SETUP.EXE from the prompt but when I opened the CD I could double click it and it installed. And the program will run but very slowly. When I looked at the CD in VPC I realised that some of the files did not have extensions, including all the .EXE files, and one file was missing (hidden maybe?). The Mac can see all the files are there, with extensions. I tried copying all the CD files to my hard disk and burning a Data CD, in Mac OS and PC (Hybrid) CD format. This does not run, VPC tells me to put the correct disk in the drive. I tried re-installing but got the same error message. I would be pleased to hear any suggestions as I would like to buy the next CD this FHS are about to produce. Next time I will only order one thing and it should be sent in the proper packing. They offered to save on postage for me but I said not to, and sent the full postage for both items. So they saved a few pence for themselves! The woman who runs the show has a bad reputation as far as giving value for money is concerned, very commercially oriented. I would not buy anything else from her except this is the only source of the information apart from spending hours reading census films! *
Virtual PC 6
Hi I was wondering if anyone out there has used Virtual PC 6 and understands some issues I'm facing. When ever I use it and make the PC restart the program closes and when I go to re-launch it, an error occurs or in some cases my computer freezes. It works fine until the windows system is restarted but then becomes corrupt. Any Ideas on a cure? Regards Christian

It might run on the 7600, but when I asked questions about 2 weeks ago, the answers I received seemed to follow the amount of Ram available in the Mac. Those with 64/96 meg Ram in essence said useless but those with around 160 megs were able to run. The 7600/132 would run slower. Dont forget you will also need a bundle of Hard Disk space. Virtual PC Disk Image
In earlier versions of Virtual PC I always saved a copy of the disk image which I could use if there was a problem with the original. When I loaded Virtual PC 5 I could not find the disk image. Does anyone know if it is still there? I looked for an invisible file using Sherlock but could not identify it. A friend told me he obtained one by loading an older version which produced the disk image and then loaded VPC 5 over it. We have versions 2.0 (W 95), 2.1 (W 98), 3.0 (upgrade), 4 (W 98 ME) and 5 (W 98 SE). I don't remember if version 4 produces a disk image. Anyone know? Any suggestions? I recently bought a PC CD which is not visible to VPC 5 but the Mac can see it, and it does run on a PC. Maybe it is just the crummy Windoze 98 SE which they give you with VPC 5. Maybe I should add another disk and load Windows 98 from the CD I got with version 2.1. I am told they no longer supply Windows CDs for fear it could be used on a PeeCee. Ha bloody ha! Diana

Regards, Nathalie Bad news Nathalie. Virtual PC uses the Chooser on the Mac side to configure printer connections. There is a default printer driver in VPC that works as a go-between from the PC to the Mac side. So it uses whatever printer is selected in OS 9/ OS X. I am not sure if this has changed with VPC 5, but that has been standard on previous releases of VPC. Your only option is to connect the printer to a real PC and send print jobs to it via ethernet. Re: Difficult Update - Virtual PC updates for v2.1 - Connectix web-site
Hi Dark Servant and WAMUG folks. The Connectix web-site is a good start; in the support section: http://www.connectix.com/support/product_downloads.html In particular: http://www.connectix.com/support/vpcm_online.html Scroll to the bottom for Version 2.13 update. Else, you can buy the V4 update (cheaper than buying the full v4) from your local retailer (or online). Enjoy. Derek. Does anyone know where I might be able to find an update for Virtual PC v2.1? Here's a tricky one for the experts... Does anyone know if Virtual PC can use a USB to parallel adapter to emulate a real parallel port under Windows? Serial port emulation works quite successfully with a USB-serial adapter but I've never tried parallel... I need to program some microcontrollers from Windows over parallel and it would be nice if I could just do it under VPC!
