Mayberry auto decals
I made a decal for the autos of WBMUTBB members. It's 4x4 inches, with the Mayberry squad car door sign in the middle, "Mayberry, USA" on top, and "WBMUTBB Chapter, The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club" on the bottom. Email me and I'll send it to you. It is a JPEG file. I don't have high-speed internet, so if too many want it, Allan, I will have to defer to you and Weaver's. I can send it to you as a PDF, you could have it printed on vinyl and sell them (real cheap) to us. To make a bumper sticker from the file, print it out on good quality paper and cut it out using the 4 x 4 inch outline. Let it dry a few minutes, then give the printed side a couple of coats of clear acrylic spray paint from any hardware store. This will make it waterproof. Next, go to Michaels or any arts and crafts-type store and get a spray can of Spray Mount Artist's Adhesive. Spray the back real well, paying special attention to the corners, and put it on your rear bumper. Afterwards, we can wave and say "Hey" as we see each other on the road or help each other in case of breakdowns, on those occasions when we have to venture into the world outside of our Mayberry! Re:Barney's Harmonica
Regarding the case of Barney and his harmonica-playing abilities: Paul got it right. As an old former has-been ex-musician (I actually played harmonica on some tunes in recording studios way back when) I have to break the news that ol' Barn couldn't even play "A Cappello" on the harp. The best he ever did was put it to his mouth and blow in and out, which anybody can do. If any actual music seemed to come out--I can't remember if that happened or not--it was overdubbed later during editing. I sure hope this doesn't get me in trouble with that lawyer fellow over in Mt. Pilot. Speaking of music, I spent a while this weekend visiting with a very good old friend of mine from my bass playing days, Billy Joe Royal, who was down here in L. A. (Lower Alabama) to play a concert. Re: WBMUTBB Digest, Vol 8, Issue 279
Hi Mayberry folks! I finished my painting I have been working on, which I call "Mayberry By Moonlight". I am really happy with the way it turned out. I had a friend of mine, who is a professional photographer, take a photo of it in his studio and save it on a CD. It's a real big file, but if anybody wants to see how it turned out, I made a small JPEG file of it that is easy to email. Just send me a note and I will email it to you. I will check around to see how much it would cost to have real art prints made of it. Now I am working on a painting of Wally's Service Station and I need some help. I think our friends at Mayberry On Main could tell me this. What kind of trees would actually be seen in Mt. Airy behind a business like Wally's out on the edge of town with woods behind it? Appreciate any help anybody can offer, specially from those folks who just attended Mayberry Days. Subject: Meeting Mayberry Cast
Because I was in the "music business" in the sixties and seventies, I was fortunate enough to meet three members of the Andy Griffith Show cast in person. The first one I met was Jim Nabors. I was B. J. Thomas's bass player at the time, and we were playing in Los Angeles. We were there to play Knot's Berry Farm, The Tonight Show, and Dinah Shore's daytime syndicated show, among other venues. I think we were at the Beverly Hilton, I am not sure, and I got up early one day to get some breakfast. The restaurant was empty except for me and B. J.'s backup singer Rodney Justo, and I looked across the room and there sat Jim Nabors by himself, eating breakfast. He looked very tired. Rodney told me to leave the guy alone, but I couldn't resist. I went to his table and told him I was from Alabama too, and that I had played in his hometown recently. I asked him if he had been back home lately, and he said he hadn't. He was very cordial, but I could tell he was tired. I shook his hand and left him alone. Three or four years later I attended an event in Montgomery, Alabama, a private party associated with a charity drive, and a lot of Nashville stars were there. Over in the corner, by himself, sat Jack Dodson (Howard). As I approached him, he stood up and smiled. We shook hands, and I told him an outright lie. I said I wanted to get his picture for my mother, who was as big an Andy Griffith Show fan as me (she really was). Actually, the picture was for me. He was glad to let me photograph him, and invited me to sit down at his table. I did, but only for a moment. Instead of talking about himself, he directed the conversation towards me, asking about why I was there, and who I was and he asked other things about me. I had things to do, so I left his table, and I have always regretted doing that. Ordinary people aren't that nice, and, especially today, famous people never are. In 1989, Alabama celebrated its introduction as a state, and part of that celebration was a train that traveled all over the state picking up passengers, with the trip ending in Montgomery. At the time, I was the editorial cartoonist for our local newspaper, and my boss was Doug Bradford, editorial page editor. He was from George Lindsey's hometown, and they had been best friends. In fact, George was Doug's best man at his wedding. As we sat sweating on the train in Dothan waiting for the governor to arrive (the air conditioners on train cars didn't work unless the train is in motion) and get on board, George went from car to car, seat to seat, shaking hands with everybody on board. I don't really know about or care too much about the celebrities of today, but I have to think, they aren't much like the the ones of my experience. We are fortunate to have grown up in our own time. Sorry about this post being so long, but these are things I remember that might be interesting to others who grew up in their own Mayberry. I know its not good to try to live in the past, but it can't hurt to go visiting back there when you can. Mayberry moment For some reason, reading the digest tonight brought back memories of my past life as a musician and how that led to opportunities to meet a few cast members of TAGS. BJ and I still keep in touch by phone. In 1974 or 75, I can't exactly remember the date, we went to Hollywood to play on several TV shows---The Tonight Show, The Merv Griffin Show, and Dinah Shore's syndicated talk show, taped at CBS's Television City, where they did all of their shows then. I especially remember meeting Dinah Shore because she was so nice to us and talked to all of us right before we went on. Her kinfolks were from Pike County, Alabama, as were mine, and we had a good time talking about that. What a nice Southern lady she was. One morning, before we taped, I got up sort of early (rare for a musician on the road) and went to the restaurant downstairs for some breakfast. Only two or three people were there, and I saw one guy sitting by himself. It took me a few seconds to realize it was Jim Nabors. He looked pretty tired, and I promised myself that I would NOT go over and bother him, but, after finishing my breakfast, of course I did. He was very nice. I asked him if he had been back to Alabama lately, told him I had recently played in his home town there, and he graciously told me that, no, he had not, it had been a while. I shook his hand and left him alone, but wow, I would have loved to have sat down and talked more, but it would have been rude to do that. A few years later, I saw Jack Dodson at a charity event in Montgomery, Alabama, closer to home. He was sitting in a corner of the room by himself, and as I walked over to him, he stood up and extended his hand. He invited me to sit down, and we talked for a while. Re: first one thing and then another
Hey Paulwhen I first started making miniature replicas of the buildings in Mayberry, (you can see two of them at _www.mayberrybuildings.com_ (http://www.mayberrybuildings.com) ), I noticed quickly that you can't pay too much attention to the set exteriors and interiors. They don't match up. If you look face on at the court house front, you will see that the building ends just past the left window. There is no room for the cells. They would be right where Floyd's Barbershop sits. For the same reason, there could be no alley outside cell #2 and no window for that cell. The window to Otis's cell actually faces the back of the building. And Andy's house has a similar problem. Face on, the house ends just left of the front door. No room for the staircase that leads upstairs, and little room for Barney's "hanging" closet. Go in the front door and the fireplace wall is directly across the living room facing you. the dining area is to your right, and the kitchen is to the front of the dining area. That means the kitchen window over the stove would be those high windows you see on the right side of the front porch. And the back door actually would exit to the side of the house at the driveway! This got fixed in the color episodes when they moved the back door and stretched the kitchen set somewhat. And every house in town is across the street from the church (there was only one full residential street at the Back 40 Mayberry set). I learned to just ignore all this when watching the show. After all, the joy is in the illusion these folks created when they gave us Mayberry, which is really a magic place locked in time. Jimmy Dean **Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. Re: Plain text
I have to agree with Allan about using plain text in letters to the digest. It makes reading a lots easier. At the same time, I have to agree with Dan in his point of view, too. I always try to use plain text writing emails, but sometimes them ten dollar words just creep into what I am trying to say. My wife says I do that because I keep my high school diploma stapled to my office wall. I have to admit, it is just plain prideful behavior. On another subject, and I ain't going to use any big words here---Jeff Koontz of our wbmutbb chapter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club is looking for donations to the silent auction that will take place in front of the Andy Griffith Playhouse during Mayberry Days in Mt. If any of you Mayberry folks out there have anything of a TAGS nature to donate, it will be to a worthy cause. I'm going to send them prints of my paintings, "Mayberry By Moonlight" and "Working at Wally's" to auction off. Yall can view them at _www.mayberrybuildings.com_ (http://www.mayberrybuildings.com) and Jeff might even let you bid online or by mail. I sell them cheap, but if you bid on them you ought to be generous, since the proceeds will go to our favorite home town. Re: Tom Kessel, Welford, and Mayor Pike
Once again, Tom's recollections are priceless. If he wrote a book I would buy it. And Welford the camera nut's remembrances of his own little Mayberry were thoroughly enjoyable. Makes me wish I could visit there. I knew Southern towns like that way back when. As to Mayberry's mayors, I loved both if them. Great but totally different personalities. But I have a favorite---Mayor Pike. He was not corruptible. I don't think anyone would have considered bribing him, but he was completely wishy-washy in the funniest way. During the summer I finished off my oil painting of Floyd's Barber Shop, and had to decide which mayor I wanted to use. I decided on Pike. I could hear him stammering around as I painted him and that helped catch his likeness. I put it on my web site, _www.mayberrybuildings.com_ (http://www.mayberrybuildings.com) if anybody wants to see it. Tom and Welford, and Ken Anderson, please keep the memories rolling in. Dewey, I took flying lessons when younger (I didn't get my licensepower-on stalls scared the heck out of me) but I loved it. There is a world of difference between flying in a small plane and flying in an airliner. The small plane makes you feel as if you are really up there with the birds, noticing every drift and bump of the wind. The airliner is about the same as riding a bus. I recommend trying a flight in a small airplane to anybody. It is a real treat, as Aunt Bee learned. Jimmy Dean Dothan, Alabama In a message dated 1/12/2009 11:01:49 A.M. Looks like I agree with most of us Mayberry citizens as to our favorite mayor. While Mayor Stoner's furious "Barney!" was priceless in the shoplifting episode, I think Mayor Pike was hilarious. It took a little bit of courage to portray a small town mayor like that at that timewishy-washy, totally uncommitted to anything other that taking the safe route with the voters. He could change course in the blink of an eye. I spent ten years as a political cartoonist, and Mayor Pike was always in the back of my mind, making me laugh. Still does, every time I see him on our show. Wish I could see all of you who are going to Mayberry Days, and maybe next year I will make it. I know it was very important that brand names not be hown on episodes like this. I have notice that at Wally's the oil cans are lways facing backwards so the brand name cannot be seen and names are not hown on any other types of products, but nothing so blatant as black tape as ever used to just cover up the names. Ken, I have also noticed that TAGS and other shows avoided showing brand names. Back in my younger days when I was a musician I was B. J. Thomas' bass player and we did several TV shows, such as The Midnight Special, The Dinah Shore Show, and several others. When we were setting up our equipment on stage, a fellow approached my amplifier and asked me if that brand was sold in the U. S. I told him I bought it in New York City, so he immediately slapped a piece of black tape across the brand name on the amp. He did it to all the other amps we had as well. So they were particular about such as that, I guess to avoid conflict with any paying sponsors they had. Vic, I've thought about this too once in a while. A lot of the Mayberry-sized towns in these parts have had different fates. Some have faded away to near ghost towns; some have thrived, growing well; others have somehow stayed nearly the same as they were back in the fifties and sixties. Here's what I would like to think happened to Mayberry. An interstate highway was built close by; not close enough to pull businesses away from downtown, but close enough to make it attractive to industry location. The pickle factory was bought up by a family in Raleigh that owned a chain of grocery stores, and they moved some of their other pickle plants to Mayberry. That drew some other industries and businesses to the outskirts of town close to the new highway, Downtown still bustles. A relative of Floyd's still operates the barber shop, and Foley's brother kept the grocery store going. The department store and other businesses have survived the same way. Ange and Barn are retired and still living in town. Opie made a success of the newspaper and bought up several weekly papers in the area and is thinking of running for the state senate. Gomer retired from the Marines and came back to town and he and Goober opened a bigger station on the interstate but kept Wally's open and like to hang around there with the grandkids as much as they can. Aunt Bee and Clara went on to their just rewards and are still remembered fondly, especially on Sundays after church. Bee's roses are grown all over the state, and Clara's pickle recipe was picked up by a niece and her pickles are now sold around the South. Foley's sells a lot of them every summer and fall. Amazingly, Otis and his wife are still alive, and while Otis has given up cow riding and the wild life some say he occasionally still lingers to near nightfall at the back of their vegetable garden. Well, there's a start. Now everybody join in. I bet we've all thought about this... ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

I had so much fun coming up with my previous posting that I've thought of a few more...delve back in time and say,"oh yeah,I remember that". Dewey Dewey, keep 'em coming. I remember almost every single thing you've listed so far. You've reminded me of that Statler Brothers song from several years ago, "Do You Remember This," I think it was called. Re: Seth Taylor
Does anyone else believe that the statue of Seth Taylor as...well...how should I put it? Unimpressive? -- ed Theodoric of York) You know, Ted, I have thought about this too. I have played around with sculpting some, nothing professional, and that statue looked rather poorly done. I'm pretty sure it was slapped together by the prop dept. out of papier mache. The finish is rough and the elbow is bowed like macaroni instead of bent. I know they had budget constraints and figured nobody would notice. And I guess nobody would have if it had just aired one time as they probably thought. They couldn't have guessed we would still be watching their work all these years later over and over! Poor Seth paid the price with a macaroni elbow viewed forever. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
"Cousins"
Thelma Lou (Janet), you're right, down here in Dixie we do use the word cousin pretty loosely. If there's even a hint two folks might be related (say their grandparents were all from the same county) there's a good chance those two will jokingly call each other cousin. Subject: Hometown Parade
Ken-reading your telling of your events portraying Barney and doing the parades with the squad car has become one of the highlights of my day. Having a dark and sordid past (I was in a band in the sixties and we did well in Wisconsin), I have been to nearly every town you mention. If I ever get up your way again, I am going to attend one of your events, even if it means delaying buying that septic tank for my great-aunt. Dog gone it, Ken! I envy you! We watch Mayberry, and you are living it. I may have to get one of them cars, a uniform, and a whistle. We had yet another fantastic experience at a very large parade in a small rural community. There were over 80 entries from all over Wisconsin and Minnesota and thousands of people got reacquainted with Mayberry. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

Trained noticing
I was wondering.any way i can earn my beginners patch with this sighting?? Thanks to all of you for all of your wonderful posts every day. Have a great Mayberry day!! Bob, you definitely get your beginners patch! Lots of folks catch this---each scene was shot three times--once a wide shot, then twice more, a close up on each actor (Barn and Ange in this case). Then it all gets edited together. The person hired to do "Continuity" is supposed to keep all this straight, but it didn't always work out. Probably laughing too hard at Barney. Barney's voice
Something has been praying on my mindIn the many episodes where Barney and Andy are singing together Andy never once complains about Barney's voice. In the episode where Thelma Lou made her debut she says "I just love to sing with Barney." But when Barney wants to join the choir all of a sudden he can't sing, and both Thelma Lou and Andy complain about his voiceWhat happened to Barney's voice?? I want to add my vote to those who have been writing about Ken and the other good folks who contribute often to the digest. pet names and star points
Over twenty years ago, when I first moved into the house where I live now, I was awakened one morning by a voice from next door yelling "Thelma Lou is on the roof again!" I looked out the window, and they were trying to coax a tabby cat down from the top of the house. Thelma Lou visited with me occasionally for several years after that. Oh, and, thanks, Ken, for clearing up that business about all them points on the stars. Ken's question about the camera
>From Ken Anderson I have an observation regarding Barney's camera he hooked up at Wally's inorder to nab the thief. When he hooked up the string to the shutter of thecamera, it was supposed to trigger the camera to take a picture. However, the door opens to the inside. Wouldn't that have lessened the tension onthe string? I think I have ciphered this out, Ken. If the door opens in, you have to put a hook over the door; attach the string to the door, run it back through the hook, then run it to the camera. Then when the door opens, the string tightens, and POW!, the camera fires. Solving this has given me the vapors. I have to go rest now. Ken
As you may or may not remember, Newton Monroe decided to become a painter after Andy tricked him into believing he was ept. Well, good old Newton showed up in Eau Claire last week and was painting houses with that thinned down paint of his. He was just finishing painting his first house when he had a religious revelation. Just as he was adding more paint thinner to his paint he heard this loud voice from above say, " Newton, repaint and thin no more." (Dear Lori, I had the same question when I was building the Taylor Home Inn B&B. If you watch the color episodes, you?ll see that the kitchen door is in the proper place, leading out to the back yard. In the black and white episodes, it actually leads where the driveway should be on the side of the house. It? is an unexplained inaccuracy on ?the show. One of several. Sincerely, Dave Scheuermann Taylor Home Inn ) Dave---thanks for confirming this for me. A few years ago I used the b&w episodes as a guide and drew a floor plan of the Taylor house and found that the back door had to lead to the driveway! Those narrow high windows on the right side of the front porch are in the kitchen over and behind the stove!
