Re: Mayberry Days during the week
>Hello , what are your thoughts on Mayberry Days during the week compared to >the weekend ? Holland - it all depends on what you want. There are a lot more people coming in early to avoid the crowds than there used to be, but you have the advantage of being an hour away and enjoying Mount Airy during the "off season" when downtown isn't as crowded. There are things to do during the week and that includes just getting a bottle of pop, sitting down and counting cars. The schedule is now online at https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html. Weekday activities include a guided backstage tour of the Playhouse, John Floyd "The Mouth of Mayberry" comedy show, and movies at the Earle. Other possibilities not on the schedule: - Walk right into Snappy Lunch without the line- Take your time going thru the Andy Griffith Museum without Bernie crowding you- Learn about Surry County music history at the Old Time Music Heritage Hall (included with AGM admission). The Women in Old-Time Music is their latest exhibit- Mount Airy Regional History Museum is downtown- Take a squadcar tour- Go see the world's largest open face granite quarry- (This goes for everyone) Stop in at the Playhouse and come say hey. I'm headed to Mount Airy on Monday and will be helping the Arts Council all week Safe travels,Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

Mayberry Days Silent Auction Results
The dust has settled on another WBMUTBB Silent Auction and it was our biggest year with a total of $6,246 raised for the Surry Arts Council this year. So many people to thank for their help with donations, assistance, and bidding. We tried something new this year with the TAGSale "Buy It Now" price and that was a success in reducing inventory quickly and letting people acquire something without having to wait. A special thanks to auctioneers James Pierce and Eric Lowery for their willingness and abilities. Some valuable lessons learned having gone through a little different format this year. One is needing a couple more volunteers to help with some specific tasks so if you are thinking you would like to be a part of the fun, please let me know. I've had a bucket on my head since Saturday and thought about a couple new things we might try next year. There are things that came in this year that didn't make it out to the tables, along with items that have been waiting for years to make an appearance, so keep your creativity going to make those great Mayberry items and plan for our 24th auction(s) next year at the 34th annual Mayberry Days. RE: Gneral Mayberry Days Question
Holland - I don't think there is a wrong answer to what day is best, so I'll recommend looking through the schedule (link below) and see what is most interesting to you on the days you can come up. https://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/schedule.html A few things to consider: - Do you want to meet the special guests? Many will not be in town on Wednesday and there is no autograph session on the schedule. Thursday's dinner at Cross Creek has sold out and the only autograph session is there. - Do you want to eat at Snappy Lunch? The lunch line will exist every day, but be shorter on Wednesday. - Do you want to compete in trivia? That is Friday - Do you like beach music? Concerts on Wednesday and Thursday night - Want to see The Mayberry Effect Documentary on the big screen or hear Randy Turner speak about TAGS and the 40 Acre Backlot? Only on Wednesday. - Don't like crowds? There are a lot more things scheduled for Friday and a lot more people in town. - Want to get a MD22 postmark? They are only available on the same days you can make it to Mount Airy. H coincidence? Enjoy your time at Mayberry Days and let us know what day you made it. Mayberry Days WBMTBB Auction
Mayberry Days is nearly upon us and I am late in sending out a reminder that our annual WBMUTBB service project is coming up. After 20 silent auctions, we had a successful live auction at the Blackmon Amphitheatre thanks to Eric Lowery's talents and will do that again this year. We have another great line up of donations, including a special "Classic TAGS" Quilt from Pat Coleman. There will also be a "Scobeys" style Rummage Sale table with donated and duplicate items that need a better home than a box in the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Items will be priced for immediate purchase. Tables should be set up on the side of the stage around 10 a.m. The auction will be held after the parade at the Blackmon Amphitheatre starting at 11 am. Please stop by, get a free bid paddle, and support our chapter's efforts. It is entertaining to watch even if you didn't bid. 100% of the proceeds to go the Surry Arts Council for Mayberry Days. Mayberry Days article
From an article in the Mount Airy News: Fans of “The Andy Griffith Show” often cite various “enduring qualities” that keep the show funny, relevant and popular today, six decades after the show debuted. The same can be said for the local Mayberry Days Festival, which is proving to be enduring itself, even in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Unless something drastic happens before then, the Surry Arts Council’s Tanya Jones says the festival will go on Sept. 21-Sept. 27. The only question is how much of the event’s activities will be held as planned or have to be altered based on statewide pandemic restrictions. Jones, executive director of the council — which puts on the annual festival — said what format the festival takes will all be dependent upon where the state is on Gov. Roy Cooper’s COVID-19 restriction plan. At present the state is in Phase 2, which limits outdoor gatherings to 25 people and indoor gatherings to 10, in addition to requiring individuals to wear masks and practice social distancing for many of those events. On Aug. 5, the governor announced he was extending Phase 2 until Sept. 11, to see what effect reopening schools and colleges had on the state’s virus numbers. Jones had hoped to have a more definitive answer on this year’s Mayberry Days in mid-August, but the governor’s moves have left her and the festival organizers in limbo, though determined to hold the event in some form. “We have the exact same position we had before, whatever the guidelines, we will honor them,” she said Thursday. “Whatever it takes to do that, we will do, but we have a number of events that can go on if the current guidelines, if he says we have to keep these in place.” Among those activities that can go on even under current guidelines are some of the fan favorites — the youth trivia contest, the World Championship of TAGS (“The Andy Griffith Show”) Trivia, apple peeling, pork chop eating contest, the cornhole competition, the Mayberry Days hay bale toss, and others. “Fans really enjoy those … all those things we do around the playhouse can still go on.” In addition, Jones said she and other organizers have added a few indoor activities that can include larger or smaller numbers of people dependent upon the statewide guidelines in place at the time. Among those are guided tours of the Andy Griffith Playhouse and the back stage area there, as well as new exhibits that will be on public display for the first time. One of those exhibits is called Betty Lynn’s Hollywood Squares, which will be on display as part of a painting class offered during the festival. “Betty was a painter, and most people don’t know that,” she said of the Mount Airy resident and actress who played Thelma Lou. “We have a TV screen in that visual arts studio, the video with Betty talking and showing the things she painted, so folks can find out a new talent of Betty Lynn.” The tours, classes, and exhibits will be limited to 10 people, including the tour guide, under the present state guidelines. If the more relaxed Phase 3 guidelines are in place, those tours and exhibits will be able to accommodate more individuals. Each year there’s generally a silent auction put on by one of “The Andy Griffith Show” fan clubs, but this year Jones said they will be holding a live auction at the amphitheater, with proceeds going to the arts council. She said bidders will be able to maintain social distancing at the amphitheater. The annual golf tournament, The Emmett, will likewise be held, though there could be some limitations on how many individuals can ride each golf cart. At present, only one may ride in each, with the exception of two per cart if they are family members. As for the various shows, concerts, and the parade — the fate of those components of the festival won’t be known until Sept. 11. If the state moves to Phase 3, she said most of them will be held, but if Phase 2 restrictions are extended, most of those will be cancelled. “Betty Lynn and squad cars will be driving around town waving to people,” she said, but the large official parade held each year will have to be cancelled. While the festival has grown to a full week in recent years, with concerts, shows and other activities starting on Monday, the official Mayor’s Proclamation for Mayberry Days still takes place on Friday of the festival week. That ceremony is still on target for this year. “Being in the amphitheater, we can socially distance,” Jones said. With the uncertainty comes an equal amount of questions about what guests will be able to attend. Not only will some of the musical guests have to wait to see if their concerts will be allowed, many of the other guests won’t know about cross-country flights and travel options until later in September. “That’s just something they’re going to decide at the last minute,” she said of the affected guests. “They’re going to hold on until the last minute

I guess we have gone to our last Days. My oncologist has advised me to stay out of restaurants & avoid crowds. That describes Mayberry Days! Snappy Lunch, Barney's, Aunt Bee's, Leon's, naming just a few. See, I have chronic lymphocytic leukemia & my immune system goes down a bit with every visit. He said I'll die with it but not from it. So that means I'll be canceling my hotel reservation & selling my Col. Tim's tickets, 2nd row center for my cost, if anyone is interested. We will still visit Mt. Airy now & then, but not while it is crowded. Just won't work any more. So, for all those we have met over the years, it has been fun! We have met so many nice people & also met many of those who were on the show. That doesn't include the wonderful 'tribute artists' along the way. David Browning was the first one we ever met, at a Cracker Barrel Grand Opening & he told us about Mayberry Days. Allan Newsome, Jeff Branch, Ken Junkin, Alma Venable, "Goober" Tim Pettigrew & "Gomer" Micheal Oliver - Phil Lee & Phil Fox the resident Ernest T characters! "Brisco" Bob Mundy! Keith Brown "Col. Harvey" who also went thru leukemia. Paul Gustafson who was always "Regis" carrying his 'Gold Standard' sign in the parade & doing "Copenhagen" at Col. Tim's!! Elvis! Who could forget Elvis Michael Hoover & Bobbie!I hope I didn't forget anyone but if I did, blame it on age! We became personal friends with George Spence & treasure that! Leroy & Jan, such wonderful people! "Ernest T" Howard Morris - we had a connection because of Midway Island! He was there in 1943 & I was there in 1957-58. The old theater where he performed back then is where I roomed with a couple other guys. James Best - he autographed my "Boss Hawg" figurine & I have it on my desk!Thelma Lou! How can I ever forget Betty Lynn! So beautiful & so nice!Dennis Rush & Keith Thibodeaux. Ronnie Schell...Air Force!! Always gave him a salute during the Parade! Maggie Peterson Mancuso, "Charlene" who went the first time in 1998, same year we were there the first time! And "just Friends" over the years! Too numerous to mention! Lifelong friendships because of Mayberry! If you ever pass our way to Raleigh NC be sure to drop in for a visit! The door is always locked but always open to Mayberryites!SadlyWelford M. Mayberry Days 2020 report
I just wanted to give my report on our Mayberry Days experience this year. Things have been quite hectic both at work and home, so forgive the week's delay. I know a lot of people did not make it this year due to the pandemic who otherwise would have gone, but we made our lodging reservations, bought show tickets, and arranged for time off from work before the virus became a thing, so we decided to go ahead as planned. We were only able to be in town Friday and Saturday, as it takes a full day of driving for us to get there and another to return home. Friday's weather was poor -- cool and rainy off and on. But jackets and umbrellas gave us some protection. We attended the Mayor's Proclamation, where the lack of guest stars was evident. Then we did some shopping on Main Street for Mayberry items (got a TAGS 60th anniversary mug with all 249 episodes listed on it and a similar T-shirt, among other things). We also picked up our "Mayberry Man" merchandise. Ray and I had lunch at The Loaded Goat, which was the first time we had eaten together in a sit-down restaurant since the lockdown in March. We wore our masks until our food arrived (which was delicious!). We had bought tickets for LeRoy McNees's show, but it was cancelled. We took a squad car tour in the afternoon, a first for us. We had always wanted to do it, but there are usually so many people wanting rides that it's hard to get in. We figured the light attendance on Friday was a good opportunity, despite the dismal weather. Larry was our driver and was very friendly and entertaining. We stopped in at Opie's Candy Store afterwards and had ice cream. If you are a chocolate fan, go there and get the Smoky Mountain Fudge. It's wonderful! Of course, we couldn't miss the World Championship Trivia contest. I think this was the third time I've participated. The questions this year in the qualifying round were pretty hard! Many of them asked for names of unseen people mentioned only once in passing. Those don't normally stick in your brain, and I didn't do any preparation at all for the contest. Anyway, I got six right and came in fourth behind Jeff Gossett. Forget who the top two were. Maybe someone can remind me. They were the only ones who were allowed into the final round. I didn't think about it until afterward, but we had no group photo for the WBMUTBB? chapter as we normally do, but I'm assuming this was because of the need for social distancing. In the evening, we attended a show by Tim White and Troublesome Hollow (formerly the VW Boys). We enjoyed the bluegrass music. After the show, Ray bought two of their CD's and they threw in a free "Eat More Possum" bumper sticker. I don't know if Ray will be brave enough to put it on his van! The biggest disappointment was the cancellation of the parade on Saturday morning, so we lounged around and didn't come into the heart of town until lunch time. It was a beautiful day, in much contrast to Friday. In fact, it was the most pleasant weather we've ever experienced at Mayberry Days -- sunny but not hot and humid. I figured attendance would still be sparse due to the parade being cancelled, but we were surprised at the large number of people strolling Main Street. I'm sure the merchants were pleased! Due to Covid 19 restrictions, Prof. Brower's Lecture was divided into two shows, and we were assigned to the 3:00 show. We got seats front and center. Unfortunately, because no guest stars were present, Neal Brower didn't have anyone to interview, as is his custom, so he talked instead about how he came to be a TAGS fan, write a well-regarded book about the show (Mayberry 101), and teach a community college course on TAGS for many years. He discussed how he came into contact with various people connected with the show and described some of his experiences with them. It was really quite interesting. After the lecture, we headed to the amphitheater for the annual meeting of TAGSRWC. On our way, we stopped and purchased our official Mayberry Days shirts from the Surry Arts Council. Since Jim Clark was absent this year, Allen ran the program. Chapter reports were given, and some awards were handed out. Eric Lowry (Mayor Pike) won the Mayberry Friendship Award, and Dewey Lamb won the Jim Schwenke Memorial Award. Both were well deserved. After we grabbed a bite to eat, Ray wanted to go back to Opie's for more ice cream. I really was not hungry, but I made the sacrifice for his sake and had some more Smoky Mountain Fudge. That evening, we attended the revamped version of Col. Tim's Talent Time, which was held at the Earle Theatre instead of The Andy Griffith Playhouse. Since there were no guest stars to participate, the tribute artists took up the slack, and Michael Hoover (Elvis) had a bigger part of the show. It was all very enjoyable. My only quibble is that the last part of the

MAYBERRY DAYS 2020
Even though Mayberry Days had to be downsized due to the Corona Virus, Tanya Jones & her Surry Arts Council Staff did not want to throw the towel in & cancel this annual event altogether, and wanted to have something for the fans coming to Mt Airy. Having said that, the town prepared for this, and what a weekend everyone had Thanks to all who worked to make Mayberry Days happen, to include all of the downtown merchants, and to all the "tribute artist" who stepped up to the plate to mingle & entertain the fans, and most of allthanks to you-"the FANS"!!! With all the civil unrest going on in our country (violent protest & riots) , the wildfires wrecking havoc, and the corona virus taking it's toll , all of the people who came to Mayberry this week-- stepped back into a simpler place , & time -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

I, too, can recollect days from a not-so-small high school but we still didn't have the issues we have today. Janet - thanks for taking the time to write up a great MD19 report. I'm glad you and Ray were able to be there again this year. >We made some new friends at our table, the Jordans and the Taubers. In fact, >we got so gabby with the Jordans that we sat there talking after most people >had left. I'll extend that story from Thursday... I was helping clean up after the dinner and didn't want to disturb their conversation but once they got up asked Janet, "Did ya'll just meet?" I suspected that was the case and they confirmed. To see them, they were carrying on like old friends. It is indeed the good people who come to Mayberry Days that make it so special. Report on Mayberry Days 2019
Ray and I got home Sunday night after spending our vacation all last week in the Mt. Airy area for Mayberry Days. What fun! This was the first time we went for more than just Friday and Saturday, and we enjoyed the more leisurely pace and the opportunity to see and do more things than before. Monday was our traveling day (we live in Illinois). On Tuesday, we visited the Andy Griffith Museum. We had not seen it since the remodeling, and this was a great opportunity to visit without the crush of the weekend crowds. We especially enjoyed the interactive features. We also bought our 2019 MD T-shirts there. We had lunch at Barney's Cafe and later ice cream at Opie's. We shopped at Mayberry on Main and met the new owner, Esther. She's nice, real nice! Then in the evening we attended the Ballet Magnificat! performance of "Deliver Me" at the Andy Griffith Playhouse and met Keith Thibodeaux. On Wednesday, we drove to Pilot Mountain State Park and got to see the "knob" up close, as well as the spectacular view below. That afternoon, we went back to Mt. Airy. I wanted to get pictures at the courthouse/jail recreation by Wally's. Unfortunately, as I was about to get a photo of Ray sitting behind the desk, I backed up without looking and took a rather bad fall onto the concrete floor. I got banged up a bit, but the worst result was that I dropped my beloved Canon G15 camera and it broke. How I love that camera! And I'm afraid repair would be too expensive, so I am very sad about that. Fortunately, I also brought one of my DSLR bodies and a couple of lenses, so I was able to continue shooting. Thursday evening we attended our first Mayberry Days Dinner at the country club. We met and spoke to Keith Thibodeaux and Margaret Kerry, and I got yet another autographed photo from Betty Lynn just because I wanted to speak to her and get my picture with her. I love that lady! (Who doesn't?) Margaret talked to us a good while. When she found out I do some acting in our local community theater, she gave me some tips about doing voices. I wish I had had time to meet more of the special guests. As it was, I missed the first part of Henry Cho's standup act because I was waiting to talk to Betty. We made some new friends at our table, the Jordans and the Taubers. In fact, we got so gabby with the Jordans that we sat there talking after most people had left. We started Friday with the Mayor's Proclamation and also mingled with some of the tribute artists and other friends. We stopped at the Visitor's Center next, and a lady there recommended we visit the Gertrude Smith house. This was something non-Mayberry that we hadn't done, so we decided to go there. If you like touring old houses and/or are interested in eclectic art collections, you should go. Plus, it's free! We had a late lunch at Leon's Burgers afterwards. The trivia contest was at 4:30. I decided to enter, even though I didn't expect to do well. I had only entered once before when we attended MD three years ago. I only got three right in the first round, as I recall, so my expectations were low. I did better this year, getting seven answers right. Actually, I should have had eight, but people around me were talking and I didn't hear all the question. I thought the question was Otis's wife's name, which was surprisingly easy, but only after I said "Rita" did the judge tell me that the question was for Otis's brother Ralph's wife's name. I knew that was Verlaine, but it was too late! Oh, I was so mad at myself for not hearing the whole question Anyway, I did better than I had hoped, so I consoled myself with that. It was a lot of fun, regardless. Afterwards, all the digest folks had our meet-up and photo, and it was good to attach faces to names and be able to visit a little. Saturday was the big parade. There were a few light raindrops, but the rain held off, thank goodness! The parade was great, as usual. The only problem for me was finding a spot to take pictures. I really don't understand why the town allows parking along Main Street during the parade. It would sure allow everyone more room and a better view of the parade if the street were kept clear until afterwards. Ray and I walked over to the silent auction and bid on a couple of items, but neither of us won. (By the way, many thanks to Dewey Lamb for all the beautiful items he made and contributed to the auction.) Then we walked down to Wally's where Randy Turner was having a book signing. I bought my copy of "Mayberry Firsts" and had him sign it and got to visit with him a little. One of my Facebook Mayberry groups had a meet-up at the canon, and we gathered for a picture in the humid heat. That afternoon we attended Prof. Brower's interview with Asst. Director Bruce Bilson and stayed for the annual TAGSRWC meeting. We had enough time to eat at Barne

My wife Linda and I attended Mayberry Days for the first time in fifteen years and we were not disappointed... we had such fun! We got reacquainted with Maggie Peterson and Betty Lynn, and met Joy Ellison (Mary Wiggins/Effie Muggins) for the first time - very delightful person. We also met the charming Dreama Denver, Bob Denver's wife, and the equally charming and delightful Karen Knotts! A special highlight for us was when we ran into "the head Goober - Jim Clark, and interacted with "Floyd," Allan Newsome. Allan, you just seem to get better and better! Colonel Tim's Talent Time was such a blast! Incidentally, Linda and I celebrated our 44th wedding anniversary (Sept. 27) in Mayberry! What we especially loved was hearing from the stars how much they loved Mayberry Days and how they were looking forward to returning next year... if they do, they may run into us - Lord willing, we're coming back next year! WBMUTBB Chapter Photo at Mayberry Days
Hey Folks Mayberry Days is FAST approaching and hopefully at least some of you will be attending. It has been a custom for about 25 years that all the members of WBMUTBB Chapter, The Taylors Front Porch, and other portions of the TAGSRWC online communities gather for a few minutes to meet one another in person and to have a group photo. When: ~5:15 Friday September 27, 2019 Where: Blackmon Amphitheatre (Just after the World Championship of TAGS Trivia) We'll gather to the right of the stage on the hill for 5 to 10 minutes to go around and introduce ourselves so we'll be able to put a face with the e-mail address/nickname that folks use here online. Back in the beginning, this was the only way we could "see" one another because the internet was so young. There was no Facebook, Instagram, or any other way to share photos and put faces to names. Once, we even all sent photos of ourselves by MAIL to a single person who compiled the photos, made color copies, and then mailed (using the post office) the photo copies to all who had mailed in photo. Whewtimes have changed. I look forward to seeing all of you who are able to be there and getting to put faces to names. So, come to the Trivia Championship and stick around for a few minutes to meet one another. --Allan ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/

What a great few days of Mayberry! Things changed, things moved on! Things always change but sometimes we can get things back but other times we can't, and what we can't, we adapt to and move on! Allan and "Mayor Pike" Eric did a Wonderful job at Col. Tim's with the help of the usual group of miscreants!! Chrissy as Lucy was a riot!! How she went thru the megavitameataminahol or whatever it was, I do not know but that was the funniest thing in the show! One thing I'll pass along... I lost a VERY nice Parker ballpoint pen during or soon after the parade. It has a rough "block' surface with gold clip and I'd love to get it back if anyone found it and will return it. A bit of sentimental value to it, so please, if you found it, let me know and I'll be more than happy to pay the postage and handling to get it back to me!! Sorry we had to leave the chapel service early but Carol was having issues and we had to go. Heavy traffic coming back but no problems, but if you are one of these, please be advisedwhen you pull over to pass someone, PASS them!~! Mayberry Days and AG movie
Hello everyone. At Mayberry Days in Mt. Airy today, Murder in Coweta County was shown at the Earle Theater. I never saw this movie before so I went today. The producer, Dick Atkins, was there. He spoke to the audience before the movie and took questions afterward. He was quite pleasant and very knowledgeable. It was also interesting to see Andy Griffith in such a different role. (If you haven't seen this movie, Andy Griffith plays a bad guy). I am just realizing how many movies Andy Griffith was in. (TAGS will still always be my favorite). Mayberry Days WBMUTBB Silent Auction
We are but weeks away from Mayberry Days and the WBMUTBB chapter's annual Silent Auction. This will be our 19th auction and your generosity over the years has made this a success. We have some new friends who have created some outstanding items for this year, so please stop by on Saturday morning in front of the Playhouse right after the parade. For the new WBMUTBB members, the Silent Auction is our chapter's annual community service project to support Mayberry Days. For many years, talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't buy in the stores. All donations are tax deductible. There are three ways to help - donating an item, donating your time, and bidding on auction items. Bidding is from 10 a.m. to Noon. If you have something to donate, would like to help, have a question, or just want more information, please send me an email. Remember it is most helpful to let me know in advance of any item your plan to donate so I can have a bid sheet ready. It is always fun seeing the great stuff people donate and spending time with our Mayberry community that Saturday and hope you will drop by. re: Mayberry Days Report 2017
Nice report Allan. I listened to the podcast too. Sounds like a fun time. I lived in Mount Airy from 1964 to 1972 and at that time, there was no 'Mayberry' themed influence in the town at all. The Snappy Lunch was there, of course, but it was not well-known that it had been mentioned in the show. Everyone knew that Andy had been born in Mount Airy, but he seemed to make a conscious effort to distance the show from the town and he seldom, if ever, visited. There was a black and white 8X10 photo of Andy on the bulletin board of the local bus station; that was the only Andy Griffith-related item in town at that time. Mayberry Days Report 2017
Hey Mayberry, Wow! What a great weekend of fun at Mayberry Days 2017. Every year I think things can't be more fun than the previous year but each year I'm proved wrong. I think part of that is because each year I get to see Mayberry friends during the Mayberry Days event and rekindle those relationships. Sure, I get to see many of them on Facebook and here on the Digest throughout the year but Mayberry Days gives the chance to have that personal, face-to-face, connection. I think friends, family, and love are what Mayberry is all about. Andy often said the show was based on love and I believe that is what continues to fuel the Mayberry spirit and keep Mayberry Days (and other events) alive. SO MUCH happened through the weekend and I'd love to hear your personal stories. I attempted to give a report during this weeks Two Chairs No Waiting podcast episode #445. I feel like I failed to find the words to share the fun and friendship shared by those who attended but I tried my best. Hopefully you'll have a chance to check it out. The video version has images from the even so maybe you'd like the video version more than the audio. http://www.TwoChairsNoWaiting.com Thanks for all that YOU do in keeping Mayberry alive. Ken, you can read more about Don's radio work in his own autobiography ("Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Known") and the newer "Andy and Don" book. What's also interesting is that when Andy and Don first met, Andy recognized Don's voice from the Bobby Benson program and asked him if he was the voice of Windy Wales. That conversation led to Don being cast in the Broadway production of "No Time for Sergeants" and to the beginning of their friendship. Don Knotts Radio Days and More
I just wanted to tell Ken Anderson that, in addition to Don Knotts radio days being mentioned in the recent book Andy & Don, those days are covered very well in a little older book with the title Barney Fife and Other Characters I Have Know, written by Don Knotts and Robert Metz, with a forward by Andy Griffith. That book is a very nice biography and it covers Don's life from his early days in Morgantown West Virginia, until his Matlock days. It was published in 1999. It has a lot of pictures, including one of Don as his character Windy Wales on the Bobby Benson radio show. This book is a great read for any Don Knotts or TAGS fan. Thanks, Sheriff Poindexter ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Don Knotts Early Radio Days
I learned something today at a car show that I had never known about Don Knotts. Starting in 1949 he began playing the role of Windy Wales in the radio show, "Bobby Benson and the B Bar B Riders". (19 Episodes) "Bobby Benson & The B Bar B Riders" The 30 minute childrens' western program "Bobby Benson & The B Bar B Riders," starring Clive Rice as Bobby 1951-1955 on MBS, was heard weekly (1949-1955) on WKIC Radio - 5:30 pm monday thru friday, as well as on Monday at 8pm, Saturday at 5pm & Sunday at 3pm. This popular kids' program (which gave a 20-something year old Don Knotts his comedic role as the voice of old geezer, Windy Wales) outlasted nearly all other childrens' adventure dramas, including Superman, Captain Midnight, Straight Arrow, Sky King & Green Hornet. SOURCE: HazardKentucky.com ** Oh, for the days when our children used their imagination for entertainment! Those days are not gone as long as these programs outlast defunct video games and TV Programs!! -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.wbmutbb.com/
Mayberry Days
My husband and I had a wonderful time at Mayberry Days this year. Actually, we weren't even planning to go, but when Harriet couldn't attend and offered her tickets for sale, I talked hubby into it. The weather was hotter than I would have preferred, but it was nice with no rain. We went to the Mayor's Proclamation Friday morning and mingled with many of the guest stars and tribute artists. I went up to talk to Betty Lynn afterwards, and she was as charming and gracious as always. Ray (my husband) took my picture with her. Then we saw Karen Knotts' new show, "A Deputy's Daughter." We enjoyed it. We had lunch at Leon's Burger Express, where we didn't have to wait too long for a seat and the food was good. Then we walked around town a while and went to the Rodney Dillard concert. Those folks can really play! Maggie Peterson sang some songs toward the end, and the Mayberry Deputy added to the fun. We went to the trivia contest afterward. I wasn't going to enter because, tho ugh I think I know a lot about the show, I don't study all year, memorizing all manner of esoteric details in order to participate, and I don't like to do something if I don't have a chance of doing it well. But my husband talked me into entering. Of the fifteen questions in the qualifying round, I got two right. Considering the third place winner only got four right, I guess that isn't too terrible, and it was fun participating. However, in the final round, I knew the answers to eight or nine of the questions, so I thought that was kind of weird. They made the questions in the qualifying round harder than in the final round! Afterwards, we had the chapter meet-up and photo. Then we walked past the Andy and Opie statue and took a few pictures and also drove past Andy's home place and took a few more photos. We found a Thai restaurant in town and ate our supper there. It was quite good! On Saturday, we arrived early for the parade and staked out a spot for our chairs. Actually, I don't know why we bring two chairs because once the parade starts, I'm not in mine at all. I spent the whole parade going up and down the street taking pictures. I just can't really enjoy anything if I can't photograph it!! After the parade, we walked over to Wally's Service and had a bite to eat. We went in the courthouse and took pictures of each other in Andy's chair and in Otis's cell. We also sat and listened to the bluegrass band that played in front of the Darling cabin. Then at 1:00 one of my Facebook groups had a meet-up, and we took a group photo. We walked back into the main part of town and got in line for Neal Brower's lecture. He was supposed to interview Clint Howard, but Clint had an opportunity come up for a movie part, I think, so he took that and skipped out on Prof. Brower. That was a disappointment, as I was looking forward to seeing him for the first time. B ut, fortunately, Neal Brower had spent a lot of time talking to Clint, as well as Rance Howard, beforehand, so he had enough material to do the lecture in lieu of an interview. I wanted to stay for the TAGSRWC annual meeting, but we hadn't been to the museum yet, and I was afraid we might not have time if we stayed for the meeting, so we went to the museum instead. (As it turned out, I think we would have had time for both, but, oh well.) We've seen it before, but since they now allow non-flash photography in the museum, I was itching to take pictures. We also saw the new Betty Lynn exhibit, which is in the basement of the Playhouse adjacent to the museum. We had an early supper at the Loaded Goat. The food was quite good! We had some time to kill before the evening performance of Col. Tim's Talent Time, so we decided to sit awhile in the rockers at the entrance to the restaurant. Ray and I got our Kindles out of the car and spent some time reading under the ceiling fans. W e decided to find a parking spot closer to the Playhouse, but after we parked and got out of the car, I said, "Where's my purse?" Then I realized that I had hung it on the back of the rocking chair at the Loaded Goat. Panic time!! Not only did the purse contain my wallet with credit cards, our tickets for Col. Tim's were in it, too. We drove back, and the purse was not on the chair. I ran into the restaurant, and I must have been rather wild eyed because the girl at the front took one look at me and said, "Purse?" Thank the Lord, someone had found it and turned it in! And everything seemed to be intact, including the tickets. So we went back and made it in time for the performance. It was a very entertaining show, and everyone did a great job. Someone already mentioned the Porter and Dolly skit. That was definitely a highlight! So funny! I, too, really enjoyed the re-enactments of scenes from the show. The tribute artists did a great job with those! All in all, it
Mayberry Days
I have a story to add to my previous report on our experiences at Mayberry Days this year. At the Mayor's Proclamation, I, of course, wanted to take pictures, but we were sitting rather far back, so I put on my long lens. However, I realized that I forgot to pack the lens hood. Because I was shooting into the sun, I was getting flare, and it was ruining my pictures. So I left my husband behind and went down close to the stage but off to the side where I could take pictures without shooting into the sun and without being in anyone's way. I heard a woman next to me say something, and when I looked at her, I realized that she was dressed up like Daphne, one of the Fun Girls. So I said, "Hello, Doll!" and she replied the same to me. She talked to me more from time to time and also to another woman nearby who was dressed like Skippy. I thought, oh, cool, we have both of the Fun Girls! Afterwards, they were up front acting like the Fun Girls they were and kissing all the men (who were receptive) on the cheek. I took pictures of them kissing Bob Mundy (Brisco) and another man and then asked if they'd kiss my husband so I could get a picture. They were glad to, and my husband didn't seem to mind a bit! Well, later that day Ray and I went into Mayberry on Main. The Miles family are such friendly people that we like to go there to buy our souvenirs. Debbie (I think that is her name, right?) was talking to us as we shopped, and I noticed the banner they had on the wall from last year when Dixie Griffith, Andy's daughter, was at Mayberry Days. So I was telling Debbie how sorry I was to have missed her, since we weren't able to come to Mayberry Days last year and how I wished she had come this year because I really wanted to meet her. As I was telling her this, Debbie got this impish gleam in her eyes. Then she said, "Well, maybe I can arrange it!" I said, "You mean she's here??" She said, "Yes, she's in the back folding T-shirts. I'll go get her." Sure enough, she brought Dixie out. She was very sweet and friendly, totally down to earth, and we got our pictures taken with her. When I said I was so happy to finally meet her, Dixie said, "Actually, you met me before. This morning." That's when it hit me--Dixie was the one playing Skippy! She was one of the Fun Girls, and I didn't realize it until that moment. We had a good laugh over that! Her cohort, Michelle, who played Daphne, was also there. She talked me into buying one of their Mayberry Cheerleader T-shirts, which I did and immediately put on. Both Dixie and Michelle were wearing them. Later, at the trivia contest, Dixie was one of the judges. When she saw me, it was like I was already an old friend. Both she and Michelle remembered our names, and whenever they saw us that day or the next, they said, "Janet! Ray!" I tell you what, that was one of the high spots of Mayberry Days for me. And those gals really lived up to their characters. They are definitely fun girls! I thought you might enjoy hearing my story. Mayberry Days
What a delight Mayberry Days was this year. I have missed a couple of years so things have moved and changed. Michael Hoover's Memories of Elvis was wonderful. He really puts on a special Mayberry show, but what I really enjoyed was Colonel Tim's Talent Time, so much better this year with lots of tidbits and scenes from the show. This is what I go to mayberry days to see. Loved Gomer and Sgt. Carter, Goober and Gomer with the Little Fat Mayor, Otis and his letter from Home, and of course Barney and Floyd. Don't want to forget the little Opie, he was a great added star to the show. Loved the scene with "Porter and Dolly", what a funny skit, loaded with talent. Ronnie Schell was a nice added addition. I went away with a smile on my face this year, and the time frame much better. Want to thank all the tribute artists and stars for an unforgettable weekend, hopefully won't be our last. Mayberry Days Updates
Things are shaping up for another great festival in Mount Airy this year and I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. If you've never been to Mayberry Days take advantage of excellent weather (according to Calvin Coolidge) and come to Mount Airy this weekend. Legitimate concern about the availability of gas, but my observation is companies that own their tanker trucks do have gas so truck stops like Pilot/Flying J and the like are good. Smaller convenient stores that rely on contract trucks to deliver their gas run out until the next delivery. Don't panic, but don't let the gauge go to E before filling up (insert Gomer's quote here). Most of all, travel safely and be an example to your friends and family and don't use your phone while driving. One change to the line up with Rodney and Beverly Dillard leading the Sunday Chapel with their Mayberry Values service at the Blackmon Amphitheatre. Tickets to all shows are still available by calling SAC at 336.786.7998 but many are nearly sold out. Tickets to MD17 are also available if you want to get good seats next year. Don't forget about the WBMUTBB Silent Auction on Saturday. Thank you to those who have reached out to me about your donations. We've got some great items again this year. Please stop by on Saturday after the parade in front of the Playhouse and say hey. It's BIG! The Days
The Days are coming up soon and once again, I'll be at home trying to not remember it! We had some mighty good times, and met some wonderful people who are now friends! I must have made copies of and given away more than 3 thousand photos over the 18 years we attended, and enjoyed it so much! Always enjoyed sharing what I had been blessed with! To all you who are going, enjoy it and remember us especially at Col. Tim's Talent Time! Maybe one day we'll go for the parade and Col. Tim's, but the rest I can't do any more. When your feet fail you, you have to slow way down or stop. So far I haven't stopped but have slowed quite a bit! Mayberry Days WBMUTBB Silent Auction
We're coming up on the one month before Mayberry Days and the WBMUTBB chapter's annual Silent Auction. This will be our 17th auction. Your generosity has made this event very success in financially supporting the Surry Arts Council's efforts to host this annual festival. The Silent Auction is held on Saturday of the festival in front of the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Talented and creative members of WBMUTBB have always been generous with donations of Mayberry related things for the auction - handmade items, memorabilia, autographed items, and special one-of-a-kind things that you can't find in the stores. Thanks to everyone who has helped in the previous 16 years. I hope you will be able to help again, but even more, I encourage others to get involved. It is always fun seeing the great stuff people donate and spending time with our Mayberry community. It was extremely ironic that Jason at the Hotel posted his letter about National Daughters' Day on this site on Tuesday, 29 September 2015.The reason is that at the end he states "I believe I will have a big ol' swig.of coffee." My Childhood Lazy Days of Summer
Here is a list of summer things I did as a child growing up in a very small town in the '50's. Great memories. Swimming in a creek that was full of leeches and snails. Watching free movies outside on the walls of the feed store. Playing a game of baseball with no adults around to settle our disputes. Walking the railroad tracks to the next town that was four miles away. Fishing at the old mill pond. Hanging around the train depot watching the bums jump out of the boxcars. Going on hayrides with my friends from school. Riding my bike all over town having water balloon fights. Playing with my toy guns and shooting my BB gun. Stopping at the drug store for a nickel ice cream cone or coke. Going to the town dump in search of pop bottles to return for 2 cents each. Riding our bikes over the rubber cord by the gas pumps to make the bell ring. Playing outside under the street lamps late after dark. Sweating while trying to sleep because we had no air conditioning or fans. Selling Kool Aid on the corner for 3 cents a glass. Trading marbles with my friends. Playing mumbly peg with the jackknife that I always carried. ( even to school ) Roasting hot dogs on a stick in the back yard. Camping in the woods nearby using a blanket for a tent. These are just some of the many things that my friends and I did during the long and lazy days of summer. Now as I sit outside during the day I rarely see a child outside playing. And if I do, most of them are confined to their own yards because of all the dangers that are now lurking everywhere in our modern society. -- Ken Anderson The Mayberry Guru 2906 May Street Eau Claire, Wisconsin 54701 www.themayberryguru.com www.mayberryreflections.com ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

But since this was my very first Mayberry Days, I just had to tell you all about my experience, so here it is: I am back from the 25th annual Mayberry Days!! What fun! It was a real dream-come-true for me. Here's a (not so brief) run-down of what we did. Before we left home, Ray told me to get some of my TAGS DVD's, so I packed some from each of the first five seasons. He said, I thought we could stop on the way and buy a portable DVD player so we can watch the show on the way there and back. Do I have a great husband, or what? So that's what we did. The one riding played the DVD's and could watch, while the one driving listened. We pumped the audio through the van's stereo, so we had great volume. It was about a ten-hour drive each way (not counting stops), so we watched a total of 41 episodes! On Friday, we arrived in time for the Mayor's Proclamation, which is so much more than that. All the guest stars and tribute artists were there, and all the stars were introduced and got up to speak. There were even a couple of musical numbers. I also met several of the tribute artists, some of whom I'd already met at Danville in May. Ray and I wanted to eat a pork chop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch, but that wasn't possible. By the time the Mayor's Proclamation was over, there was already a long line stretched out along the sidewalk, so we gave up on that idea. Instead, we walked around Main Street for a while before the Karen Knotts show Tied up in Knotts at the Earle Theatre. Ray and I both enjoyed Karen's show. She talked about Don, his career, and growing up with him, as well as her own life. While she talked, she showed pictures and video clips on the screen behind her. Karen definitely got some of her dad's talent. She did some great impersonations of Arlene Dahl, Carol Channing, Marilyn Monroe, and Carmen Miranda. Her take-off on Channing was spot-on! Afterwards, we visited the Andy Griffith Museum. Wow! Imagine seeing, right there in front of your eyes, Barney's salt-and-pepper suit, Andy's uniform shirt with badge, Otis's sport coat and hat, and Goober's bronzed beanie, among other things. There was Andy's desk and chair, his typewriter and gavel, the bronze eagle, the signs from the court house door, and the keys to the jail cells. Big ain't the word for it!! But it killed me not to be able to take pictures of all those wonderful items. No photography is allowed in the museum. That was the only downside. Later that afternoon was the trivia contest. I didn't even attempt it, since I knew they made the questions extremely hard, but it was fun to watch. After the contest, the members of the digest met to have a group photo taken. It was fun to put faces with some names I already knew. Before we left for the day, I suddenly realized that I had not taken any pictures of the Andy and Opie statue. Ray and I took turns with the camera and statue, and then some lovely people walked up and offered to take a picture with both of us by the statue. That was another thing about the weekend--we met so many nice people and made some new friends. TAGS fans are the best! Saturday was a very good but long day. We arrived early, before 8:00 a.m., to be ready for the parade, which started at 9:00. The parade was great! All the guest stars were there, along with many tribute artists. There were squad cars and marching bands and all kinds of other entries. It lasted about an hour, I think. After the parade ended and we returned our chairs to the van, we walked over to the museum, where the stars would be signing autographs. It wasn't time to start yet, but a line was already forming outside the door. We found out the line was for Betty Lynn, so we decided to stay in it. It's a good thing we did because before long the line was so long that I couldn't see the end of it. We spent the waiting time chatting with a nice couple from Florida who had their little dog with them. All the guest stars had tables where they were selling signed photos. While Ray stayed in line, I went over to Karen Knotts's table. I got a signed photo, told her how much we enjoyed the show, and had my picture taken with her. I said, If you heard someone laughing uproariously at your Carol Channing impersonation, that was me! Karen said, Come to think of it, I *did* hear someone laughing then--a very distinctive laugh. That must have been you! I was then going to get Jackie Joseph's autograph, but she spied the little dog ahead of us in line and wanted to pet and hold it, so I figured I'd get her later. I already had Maggie Peterson's signed photo from another event, so I went around the room and snapped a few pictures of the other guest stars while Ray was holding our place in line for Betty Lynn. Both Elizabeth McCrae and George Lindsey, Jr., mugged for my
Re: 25th Annual Mayberry Days photos
Jeff, thanks so much for posting the link to the photos from Mayberry Days taken by Hobart Jones. I was thrilled to find myself and my husband in several of these, especially from the Around the Andy Griffith Museum group. Mr. Jones got shots of us in front of Betty Lynn's table, of my husband taking a picture of me with Betty, and of someone else taking a shot of the two of us with Betty. I'm surprised that I didn't notice him taking pictures of us because I'm usually quick to notice anyone holding a nice camera, but on the other hand, I'm sure I was so excited to see Betty and was so focused on her that I probably wouldn't have noticed if Godzilla were in the room! I enjoyed all the great pictures. Mr. Jones does a fine job! Thelma Lou (Janet) ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
25th Annual Mayberry Days photos
I have put the first batch of photos from the festival on the Mayberry Days website at: http://www.surryarts.org/mayberrydays/mdphotos2014.html Many thanks to Hobart Jones for these. It is great to see so many WBMUTBB friends in them. I should get a second batch in the coming weeks. Jeff ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Mayberry Days Auction Results
Many thanks to everyone who made this year's WBMUTBB Silent Auction another success, raising $3,214.50 for the Surry Arts Council. We had over 100 items again this year with Dewey Lamb donating another large batch of popular items, along with some new friends helping out. Dewey also donates items to other Mayberry events, so if you can't make it to Mayberry Days, be sure to look for his creations in Troy and Westminster. We did have some items come in at the end that did not make it out this year, but will be ready for next year (if you dropped off a bag of goodies that included a pink notebook of TAGS trading cards, please email me so I know who you are). Even bigger news was the success of Pat Coleman's 25th Annual Mayberry Days Quilt that was sold in a live auction on Saturday for $6,200. It went to Betty Blackmon of Mount Airy, so the quilt will likely remain in Mount Airy and I bet be displayed for all to see yearround. Congratulation and thank you to Pat, as well as Deloris Cummings, Rick Grimsley and Gary Pruitt for filling in the gaps to get shirts #20-25. If you ever need an auctioneer, I'd recommend Dustin Rogers (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=dustin+rogers+auctioneer). He is a third generation auctioneer for Rogers Realty and Auction (who did Frances Bavier's estate auction and donated his talents to auction the quilt for SAC. It was a lot of fun watching him work, even if the bidding very quickly went past my highwater mark. I'm trying to catch up on some sleep, but will be getting thank you letters and donation forms out soon. If you donated something and don't hear from me in a couple weeks, please let me know. The Days
What an end to Mayberry Days for us!! The old feet just won't do all the walking any more so we have had to call it quits!! In doing some research, I enjoyed the episode of the choir singing Voices Of the Woods...better known as Welcome Sweet Springtimegood old 14A. That is one of the best things ever done at Col. Tim's and I hope it never goes away. Always the same, always different, always hilarious! Thank you to so many wonderful people who have made the past 17 years so enjoyable, starting with David Browning, whom we first met at the opening of a new Cracker Barrel near Raleigh in 1998. He told us about Mayberry Days, so we went. Couldn't get a close-by room so stayed in Winston Salem. The next year we had to stay in Hillsville VA, until we learned to make a reservation a year in advance!! 2004 was rough as that was the year Carol had leukemia, but we made it!! Didn't do a lot, but we were there for the dedication of the statue of Andy and Opie and kept our consecutive streak going. We have seen the building of the Andy Griffith Museum, the Blackmon Amphitheater, a new store come to town called Mayberry on Main, which is THE place if you want Mayberry 'stuff.' We have eaten a sandwich at Snappy Lunch almost every year, and the time we missed, we went back during the year and had one!! Barney's is extremely good and the service can not be beat! Stores have come and gone, but the good ones are still around and growing! The Silent Auction has grown from less than a thousand dollars to almost 3,000, so keep up the good works, thanks to Jeff Koontz and his helpers!! Who do we thank after Davidand of course PattyJim Clark, Leroy and Jan, George Spence, Betty Lynn, Maggie Peterson, Jamie Opie Sullivan, 'Howard and Millie' and Margaret Kerry who spent time with us Sunday at Sagebrush, Jackie Joseph, Howard Morris, on and on and on, and all the friends we have made over the years!! You know who you arecan't name them all as it would take too much time and space, but shortly, Paul Gustafson, Bobby Butler family, Colin Watkins and his family along with Iber, the Hendersons, The Fryes, and this year the Golden Girls!!... my goodness!! All of you THANK YOU for such wonderful memories over the years. We will miss seeing all of youbut keep in touch either by Email, phone, US Mail, or in person!! Love and blessings upon each and every one who made the times so special for us. 'the moving finger having writ, moves on' the Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam.
