Opie woops up Johnny Paul for money
Here I am securitizing another Mayberry scene. I apologize, its just my character. Like Barney said " I just quit fighting it ". On the episode with the Church organ replacement and the unpaid pledges, at the very end Opie comes in with a scuffed up shirt. Andy and Aunt Bee are unsettled about this. and on a Sunday ! Opie gives his pledge , a pledge that had to have some coercing ( hurrying Johnny Paul up a little bit ) involved to get it. Andy smiled after learning of this. Now we know money shouldn't be a reason to give one a good dressing down. If so Andy will be going around giving what for's to those other pledgers. If you will look at Harland just before this scene, he has his right hand on the couch. It appears he has a band aid on his finger. And so natural, how little boys and even little girls would jump up and down on the bed and try to stretch sheets to fit. This might be my favorite episode of all. For what it's worth, Maryann, my guess is that the birds in the cage which Opie releases at the end are alive. Hello fellow TAGS fans. I have a question about the Opie the Birdman episode. I have looked high and low online and cannot find an answer. Were the birds used in that episode live, dead, or man-made? This has probably been mentioned before but watching Opie and the bully this morning I noticed 3 things. Martha and I just returned from a vacation to California. And yes, before you ask, we took in some of the same sights that the Taylor family took in on their trip out there. (No one appeared on the game show Win or Lose). We took one of those sight seeing tours that take you all over Hollywood. We drove down Sunset Strip, and the guide pointed out the nightclub Whisky A Go Go.It did not look a whole lot different than when Andy passed by it 50 years ago. But the most amazing part of the trip was while we were traveling down the Sunset Strip and the guide directed our attention to a very large house way up on the mountain top overlooking the strip. It was very large, and looked like it would cost millions of dollars.Who do you think he told us the house belonged to? If you guessed that the house belonged to our own little Opie you would be correct. Can you imagine that even in Opie's wildest dreams of 50 years ago that while he was taking that bus ride down the Sunset Strip he could have even dreamed that he would one day own a multimillion home high up in those hills?Just goes to show how far an old country boy from Duncan Oklahoma can go with a little ambition. I was sitting out in front of the house tonight reading and watching the neighbor kids across the street. Two sisters are about Opie's age when he was in the second season. Mom told them they could ride their bike down the street on the sidewalk and back but they were NOT to TALK to anyone at all. When they got back she asked them several times if they talked to anyone. How sad we have to live like that today. Imagine if Andy would not have allowed Opie to talk to anyone when he was out playing. Opie would never have had his adventures with Mr. McBeevey, Hobo Brown, Hobo Willy with the pattula oblagonda, Gentleman Dan and who knows how many other interesting characters. Why I be parents would even tell their kids not to hang around Goober. Several weeks ago I sent Betty Lynn a copy of my book and a letter of appreciation for everything she has done to make TAGS the timeless show that it is. I received a very nice reply from a lady who works with Betty Lynn on her behalf. On the way home we stopped for gas and a bite to eat. A young lady came up to us as I was filling the car. She told me she had a dog named Opie and she wished she could get a picture of me and the car with her dog. I asked her where she lived and she said it wasn't too far from where we were. Re: Lessons from Opie
Re the recent comments about some of TAGS' best life lessons coming from Opie: I couldn't agree more! During TAGS' original run I was a child a few years younger than Ronnie Howard, so back then Opie's life lessons were relatable to my own growing up. But having watched an re-watched the series throughout my life, it's the Opie episodes that still speak most to me. The adult characters on TAGS all went through stages (case in point: Andy from hick to voice of reason to angry Andy) and each had their weaknesses and foibles (such as Barney's ego). We watched Opie mature, but through those eight years he remained the most honest and sincere character on the show -- even during the times he was misbehaving. This is partially due to solid writing, but Ron Howard's acting, even when he was a wee lad, was among the finest of anyone on the cast. He wasn't a stereotypical sitcom kid -- Opie Taylor was a real person. And Opie will forever remain my favorite citizen of Mayberry. Hi Gang, That's a good one, Paul! Thanks for sharing that. There's a similar scene in which Andy and Barn are walking, checking the doors, as Thel was going with Gome to the movies. We can still hear Barn talking as if he had no fudge in his mouth, yet the camera shows him chewing. I wonder if quite a few of the outdoor scenes in particular had overdubbed sound? In reading about the British tv show from the 60s, the Avengers, it said that they filmed 'mute' (without recording sound) on the location filming in the early/mid 60s and I was wondering if TAGS did the same thing at times? I also have another question that's been praying or preying on me lately. I can't seem to find the episode in which Opie is hanging on to Andy's arm at the Taylor house, and Andy is trying to shake him loose, seemingly annoyed. Andy is standing, and it seems like they were getting ready to go somewhere. Thanks for any noticing. :) Over and Under, Clyde Barn ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
What did Opie say?
After watching Uncle Ollie and Aunt Nora visit again yesterday on TV Land (it was on twice), I realize I do not know what Opie says back to Andy when Uncle Ollie and Aunt Nora walk into the bedroom when they arrive. Andy says to Opie, You were supposed to tell us if you saw a maroon car. Opie says something back that I can't quite get. Anybody know what that line is? It is preying on my mind. What did Opie say?
You will likely get multiple responses to this, but I have a question of my own to ask, so here goes. Andy says to Opie, You were supposed to yell when you saw a maroon two-door. Opie's reply is, Maroon's a new make to me, Paw. You see, the lad was unaware that maroon was the color of the car; he thought Maroon was the manufacturer. Now here is another line I have never quite been able to make out. It comes near the end of the Bert Miller episode, when Opie is telling Andy about the crowd at Weaver's store. Opie has crammed several pieces of gum into his mouth (I wonder what Aunt Bee would say?), and Andy asks him, Did you notice, was anybody over at Bert Miller's stand? and Opie mutters something, but it's unintelligible due to all the gum in his mouth. Can anybody make it out? The nearest thing I can figure is I couldn't see the stand, but that may be completely wrong. Opie Taylor and Dennis Mitchell
I love watching Dennis the Menace..that kid can get into more mischief and get Mr. Wilson into more predictments...Yesterday he was not allowed in Mr. Wilson's yard but accidently shot an arrow and broke one of Mr. Wilson's windows...Of course all of this reminded me of Opie and his slingshot and baseball. I got to thinking the many times our little Opie got himself into unwanted trouble..here are some I can think of...Maybe there are more. 1. shooting his slingshot and killing the mother bird 2. Eating apples in the back of an Elm City delivery truck and winding up in Elm City 3. The tape recorder attached to the dog to fool Goober 4. The same tape recorder used to eaves drop on a prisoner 5. Allowing Arnold to practice piano lessons for him 6. Breaking Aunt Bee's prize rose (actually he didn't do it, Arnold did) 7. Speaking up at housekeeper Rose's wedding... 8. Breaking a window in the neighbor's house and the Remshaw house 9.Going to visit Gomer in the Marines 10. Aunt Bee and Opie
Ken, In The New Housekeeper episode, Aunt Bee is leaving and Opie runs outside and is wanting Aunt Bee to stay, He says she doesn't know how to do anything, play baseball, catch fish, or hunt frogs...the he says She needs me and he falls into her arms and they hug each other. I think it was a real embrace. That one just kinda stands out to me. Also, after hearing the sad news that Andy has passed away, I just want to say, Thank You to Andy for his work that touched so many lives in such a positive way. So many of us have been blessed by his life. And not just Andy, but All of those involved with TAGS. They all brought us so much joy and laughter and taught us so much about how to live life and how to treat others. And they continue to do so even though they are not all still with us. There are just not enough appropriate words to describe what we feel. Andy, we will forever be grateful to you! And to all of us that love TAGS so much, I challenge each of us to continue to try to live a Mayberry kind of life. Our families need and deserve that. Aunt Bee and Opie
I have a question regarding Aunt Bee and Opie. Were there ever any scenes that actually showed Aunt Bee giving Opie a kiss or tucking him in bed at night or anything like that. No Opie, There is No 'Real' Santa Claus
Just finished watching the Christmas episode of TAGS..For the longest time I had the impression that Aunt Bee didn't get a gift from Ben Weaver. However watching this time I was reasurred she did. Then I realized that Barney wasn't fooling anyone in his Santa costume and probably had no intentions to. But even if I had not started watching the episode before Barney entered the room I would not have been fooled because I know the facts... At the time of the broadcast there were approximately one (1) billion children in the world living in 100 million houses. For Santa Claus to deliver that many gifts, one per child no bigger than a box of legos, he would have to have a sleigh 13 miles long, and 8 feet high..loaded it would weigh more than 500 tons and be pulled by 360,000 female reindeer, b/c the male deer lose their antlers in winter..He would have to travel 75.5 million miles at the speed of 650 MPH making 967 visits per second. His helper would have to be female because only a woman would be able to drag a fat old man all over the world in one night and never get lost... So, Opie, in reality...Only barney Fife exists as Santa Claus...But then who would want it any other way Merry Christmas to all WBMUTBB member, families and staff..May you have a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous New Year..Not forgetting the Reason for the Season... Another look at Opie and the Bully
(remember Sheldon and the Milk money??) ..The scene is one of the most iconic shots of the entire series. A father and his son perched a hillside sharing time together enjoying their favorite pastime, fishing. With thick woods behind them, and a shimmering lake in front of them..they are all alone, as the father waits for the right teaching moment. They catch a nice fish in this favorite spot, just adding more good vibes to the moment. They have caught their fill, and now it's time to go back home, and leave the perfect scene behind...too bad -it's perfect..I want to stay there. The sons is troubled, but is too proud the reveal his dilemma. The father could take an easier way out, but has the patience to wait for the right moment, and the right analogy to teach from. The bond is so real, it's hard to imagine that this is a young actor about six years old, rattling of his lines with the delivery of feelings that only a professional could pull off. Andy Taylor, the father, is so good in his method of teaching. Andy Griffith, the actor, is in his strength..story-telling..as he carefully weaves the yarn about the mythical Hodie Snitch. It is so precise, and so at the level that his young son clearly gets the message, that at times, it's better to stand and fight..than run from the bullies and problems of life. I have struggled with this lesson many times. I have never encouraged any of my kids to stand and fight, in part due to the era that we lived in, and in part because I was never quite the Dad as an Andy Taylor. As the story played out, Andy had the patience, and the faith of the lesson, to let the situation play out, and his son to meet the bully alone. How tough was that? I would have been more like Barney and contacted the Bully's father...but what would the son have learned?? That Daddy will take care of all your troubles?? Then the heart-felt relief of the father when the son returns triumphantly, having survived the fight. His Opie, Son are you alright? is priceless. He picks him up with pride, knowing he has made the right decision, and his son has become more of a man. Watch it again and you will appreciate it even more. If you have DVDs, pull out Season Two Disc One track One. Episode 33...but before you do that, pull out the Season One Box..there they are on the front cover..look at the back cover.. There they are walking with Opie carrying that bag of fish they just caught...These scenes are not from the opening of the show..but from Opie and the Bully. Later Opie will stand tough against another bully, Steve Qunicy, in One-Punch Opie. Later Andy will use his instinct to teach another prodigy about standing up to Bullies..as he coaches Barney through the Vegetable Farmers..and Fred Plummer. But in this day is Opie, and the Milk-money thief perhaps named after the producer that sets the tone for all tough guys to come. Stand Firm It's not all the bad The reward will exceed the pain Did you really laugh, Pa? Yeah but he smiled more when his son triumphed over his fear The Untrained Voice ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Opie the Birdman gun sighting
When Opie the Birdman played, and Andy walked over to open the window so Opie could hear the orphan birds, the camera went back to Opie and the nightstand and it looked like a .45 pistol on the table??? This observation has to be the epitome of trained noticing. It indeed looks like a gun on Opie's bedside table. Actually it even looks like it's been moved from the first sighting, when Andy walks into Opie's bedroom it appear to be showing the top of the gun. Then when Andy opens the window and the camera flashes back to Opie, it appears that you see the gun from the bottom angle. Very strange. RE: Opie and first names
..note the number of adults to which children (especially Opie) referred or called by their first names. Opie called Barney, Floyd, Goober, etc by their first names. In the South most kids referred to their parents' friends and neighbors and their own friends' parents as Aunt and Uncle. Sometimes I wasn't quite sure if a particular person was friend or relative. It didn't matter. If I called someone Aunt or Unlce I felt pretty darn close to them. And the town folk of Mayberry referred to Aunt Bee as Aunt Bee even to those she wasn't related. We're still not sure about whether Andy and Barney are blood related, marriage related or just close enough friends to call each other cousin. I have a friend I call Cuz. He was a first cousin to my ex, though I divorced, Cuz will always be Cuz to me.. In Opie's defense - Episode Opie's Charity - Andy tells Opie to take off his hat and say how-do to Mrs. Silby. One Final Request: Opie the Birdman
My last episode request would be 'Opie the Birdman.' Then I would give up the ghost and be interred at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, CA. As far as the 'Gomer Pyle USMC' out takes shown at Jim Nabors' and Ronnie Schell's shows, I e-mailed Paramount to include them for Season 5 of 'Gomer Pyle USMC', but to no avail. Andy and Ronny But Not Opie and Andy
Speaking of not answering questions posed, what series did Andy Griffith and Ronny Howard appear in but NOT as Andy and Opie Taylor? They were depicted as not being related. Why Didnt Opie Smell The perfume?
Very perceptive question asked by a loyal fan of TAGS but the answer may be there in the scene. the way its played out. In the drugstore Opie dropped the bottle of perfume. true and he didnt bother to see how it smellls. Even back in 1968 as well as today, we can guess why not. Look at the powerful scene following te accident of Opie rising behind the counter looking obviously disturbed. The thought of losing your job over such an accident was of prime concern . its obvious by the look on his face. Smelling its content plays no factor. The same applies in reality if one knocked over a bottle somehow. The last thing is smell its contents. Just a thought ive had for 41 years. Thank you. Opie left alone
When Andy, Barney, and Aunt Bea went to the landfill to find the remaining editions of Opie/Johnny Paul's gossip paper, she may have had Clara/Bertha-Edwards/Johnson sit for him, like she did on other episodes. I vaguely remember Bea mentioning for Opie to go stay with other ladies in other episodes (when she had to run off all of a sudden), as well. In a perfect world, Andy would have already married Ellie Walker, or one of the Mary's, or Lucy Matthews, and they all could have gone to the landfill, even Opie, because I'll bet it wasn't past 8 or 9PM, and he was probably 11 or 12 years old by then, anyway. But I guess the point was that even though they scolded him for writing and distributing papparazzi-style gossip, they were still very interested in that gossip, though they didn't want him to know how interested they were (blonde, right out of a bottle). Opie Alone and Floyd Walking
It is so funny to me how often the minds of folks here in Mayberry are thinking the very same thing. As I was watching Andy, Barney and Aunt Bee at the dump, I began thinking the same thing: Did she just leave Opie alone at home in the bed? Then I thought it was probably another testimony to way times have changed from the 60's to today. Since crime really wasn't an issue in Mayberry, I guess you only had to worry about things like fires, etc. Very different from the world we know. I am also intrigued by the great job the directors/producers did in making it appear that Floyd could walk. There is another great scene in the episode where Howard buys the barbershop. Within the episode, we find Floyd sitting in his car outside the Courthouse talking to Andy. At the end of the conversation, they make it appear as though Floyd is moving over into the driver's seat--of course this not really happening. Floyd was such wonderful actor and such an important member of the Mayberry cast. In fact, to me it often seems as though he was two wonderful actors--the Floyd we meet in the early episodes like the one where he was posing as rich businessman calling himself Wretch as he stared at himself in the looking glass, and then the post-stroke Floyd we come to know in the later episodes. What an actor! I would love to have met him. ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/
Opie alone? Where is the dump anyway?
Hey! I just watched the episode where Andy and Barney and Aunt Bee end up at the dump trying to find the second page of gossip from Opie's newsletter. Since I'm pretty sure Opie said goodnight and went to bed, does that mean that Aunt Bee left him alone to go to the dump? And since she didn't have a car - the dump is within walking distance? And Barn ( who we know is afraid of the dark ) didn't mind walking there either?! Peggy It makes you thank! ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

For that matter, the scene where Gomer returns with Mary Grace's corsage, a very touching moment. One that cracks me up: the scene where Myrtle Hubcaps Lesch tells her nephew that she just unloaded a lemon on The sucker of the world, thereby showing us her real, barracuda side. Also like Howard adjusting himself to life on the island. and talking to himself. Dixon **Join ChristianMingle.com® FREE! Meet Christian Singles in your area. Start now! Opie the Birdman (9/30/1963)
'Opie the Birdman' (9/30/1963) was the ultimate tear jerker in the entire history of TAGS with the scenes of the chirping birds without a mother and the final scene on the Taylor front porch. A very close 2nd would be the bedroom scene in 'Mr. Beevee' where Andy told Opie that he believed him. Both episodes were written by Harvey Bullock. I was watching 'Opie and the Carnival' (4/26/1965) on DVD yesterday, and the scene where Andy cleans house at the crooked shooting gallery elicited a good laugh. Opie Cates information
Hey Folks, I got an e-mail today from Opie Cates granddaughter Liza Jane Hayes-Brown and I thought you might like to read it. I think she's referencing the Mayberry FAQ (http://www.tagsrwc.com/faq/index.php?p=defaultcat=2#a14) I was reading about my grandpa, Opie Cates, online and came across your website A lady asked a question about where the name Opie came from and was is short for anything. I can answer both questions. First Opie came from Opie Cates the band leader, you are correct. Second, the name was not short for anything. His full name was Opie Taft Cates. I hope this helps. Please contact us if you have any other questions. Sincerely, Liza Jane Hayes-Brown Great information and straight from the sourcewell, really close to it at least. --Allan ___ WBMUTBB mailing list WBMUTBB@wbmutbb.com http://www.mayberry.com/tagsrwc/wbmutbb/

thoughts on seeing Opie again (non-political)
It's fun to see Ron Howard act again. I literally grew up with the guy. He's a great actor. I'm not always fond of the films he directs but i like to watch the man act. The older he gets the more he looks like his father. Don't always agree with these folks but I'm glad they're still being creative and able to work. btw I'm voting Newsome for Pres!
