RE: [wdvltalk] Registering an existing domain

 From: Ross Clutterbuck

 If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state
 then it comes open for purchase.
 Only at that stage will your client be able to grab it.

There was an article on Sitepoint I recently read about expired domain
names.
I forgot to renew my domain on the first of January this year, and a couple
weeks later was able to renew it. I assume, due to the grace period.
This is a little outdated but may give you some insight.

RE: [wdvltalk] Website optimization question - kinda

2005-11-17 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)
You might ask them to have someone objectively review their site.
It comes across as unprofessional to me.
I found four typos while reading just two pages.
Additionally, the homepage content is hard to understand.
They have a link claiming valid XHMTL but if you click it,
the result reveals quite explicitly that the page does not validate.
Who's telling the truth, and who's not?
When I used their search tool to search for the word window I got this:

window.document.getElementById(’post-2′).parentNode.className += ‘
adhesive_post’;
There are literally hundreds of window companies with thousands of
salespeople.

Maybe they aren't getting much business because their site doesn't generate
much credibility.

RE: [wdvltalk] PHP: determine if a directory is empty

2005-06-09 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)
Hang tight everyone.
I'm not ignoring you.
I'm systematically trying all your suggestions.
So far with little success.
My continued failure is probably due to my novice understanding of PHP.

Charles: I thought the break would work too, but $file never evaluates to an
empty string,
even when I try to exclude the '.' and '..'.
The array concept looks promising. I was trying that earlier, wasn't
defining the array correctly.
My loop kept spelling out the file names one letter at a time.

Pat Richard:
Tried the counter.
Seemed like it should work but if there are no files, the output echoes
There are no files in the folder twice, while the loop is counting.
When there are files, I get the text string and file names. Maybe I have
the counter in the wrong place in the script. Not sure.

Steven Olson:
Your idea about sending the output to a file sounds promising.
I just have to figure out how to do that so I can test the concept.
Do you mean send it to an intermediary php page to count the lines?
Ummm, how do I count the line?

Stephen Caudill:
You suggest testing to see if there is a directory.
I don't plan on deleting the directory when no files are present.
Will this test still work even if the directory exists but is empty?

 just add a line to check for an empty string in $file and
 break the loop
 after printing the message you want to print.

 i.e.

   $continue = true; /* Set a BOOLEAN variable to keep the
 loop going as long as there are files */
   if ($handle = opendir('./ssgi/')) {
 while (false !== ($file = readdir($handle))) {
   if ($file != .  $file != ..) {
 echo a href=\ssgi/$file\$file/abr /\n;
   $continue = true;
   } elseif ($file == ) {
   echo There are no files in this folder;
   $continue = false;
   }
   if ($continue == false) { break; }
 }
 closedir($handle);
   }

 This should work well ( I use a similar system on one of my projects )

 another option is to push the results into an array ( push(@array,
 $file); ) and check to see if the first array item ( $array[0] ) is
 empty or not when printing the information
 this requires using the function to return the array and
 printing it out
 with a seperate block of code.

[wdvltalk] Alphanumeric Ordered List

2004-11-22 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)
I've been searching and experimenting but I can't find the answer to this
problem.
I need to create an ordered this something like this:

1. XX
* x
* xx
2a.
 * xx
2b.
* xx
* xx
3. X

Creating the nested lists is no problem.
But how do I create the 2a 2b list items?
Is there a way with CSS to accomplish this, or is it just improper form and
thus not possible?
I can switch from numeric to list-style-type:lower-alpha by using classes
on the li but I can't seem to combine them.
Anyone got a solution?

TIA!!!1a ;)

[wdvltalk] RE: Code interpretation problem

2004-10-27 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)

-Original Message-
From: Joseph Harris

 Can someone guide me to the way to have one div (or whatever would be the
 right code) float over a container and its components. The floater is a
 set of gifs.

Joseph,
I'm wondering if what you're describing is precisely what you mean.
Making a DIV Float is not the same thing as raising a layer on it's
z-axis.
When you say float over a container do you mean higher on the page than
the container, or
or a higher z-index? Do you follow me? :)
Can you give us a link to a screen capture of the page arranged the way you
want it to be?
Right now, nothing looks obviously out of place.

Thanks,
Perry Gerenday

::

Hey David,
In addition to the valuable comments made by others I'd like to suggest
altering your navigation links to make them tastier spider food.
It's my understanding that a bulleted list carries more weight then a simple
group of links will. Right now you have your navigation separated by p
tags.
Better form would be like this:

ul
   lia href=/ class=navlv1aHome/a/li
   lia href=/new-developments/ class=navlv1New Developments/a/li
   lia href=/resales/ class=navlv1Resales/a/li
   lia href=/rentals/ class=navlv1Rentals/a/li
   lia href=/location/ class=navlv1Location/a/li
   lia href=/questionnaire/ class=navlv1Questionnaire/a/li
   lia href=/contact/ class=navlv1Contact Us/a/li
/ul

Use CSS to adjust the margins and eliminate the bullet display.
It looks like you could do that with all the pages I viewed.

Good luck!

Move the call to a point after the runSlideShow() function and I bet it will

However, I was also thinking that the navigation gets lost. IMO I think it's
due to the customer testimonials. They seem to generate a chasm between the

rather than being obstructive. Otherwise, I love the simplicity and airiness

Hey everyone,
I've been in lurker mode for quite some time but I'm still around and
looking for some help.
Can I get a few of you to look at a site redesign I'm working on? I've had
some issues with the CSS not working across browser / platform / operating
systems. Because of the subject of the site, I really only anticipate
visitors with run-of-the-mill browsers, but that still leaves quite a few
variations. As is my habit, [read: downfall] the site really needs pixel
perfect alignment. I'm using Javascript to serve up browser appropriate
style sheets rather than CSS hacks, which seem to be failing in some cases.
Please take a look and let me know if you see anything wonky.

 the site is totally useless with javascript turned off

Hmmm. Rudy, my suggestion to you, as a user of the WWW, would be to stop
disabling features of your browser that were developed to enhance your
browsing experience. Then, as a developer, find a survey - or conduct one
yourself, to find out how many average individuals disable Javascript in
their browser, know they can turn it off, or even know what Javascript
actually is. I've done a little survey of my own recently, which included an
Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering (my wife) and the Director of
IT for a multi-national corporation (my brother). All those surveyed were
frequent users of the WWW and none of them had Javascript turned off. Some
of them made a pretty accurate guess at how to disabling Javascript but none
knew exactly how to do it. I submit that Javascript is not an evil creature
laying in wait for the unsuspecting web surfer but rather a useful tool. Do
you lock away your carpenter's hammer and use your shoe to drive nails
because you heard tales of people who have smashed them thumbs? I doubt it.

 so boo for using javascript to sniff my browser and then fail to deliver a
 working stylesheet which just happens to contain eveything functional

Despite me belief that Javascript is a viable tool, I agree here. I should
have provided for the event of complete JS failure by leaving a latent style
sheet.

Hi Stephen,
I am always so fascinated by web sites that give me a view of cultures
different from my own in the United States. The design concepts can
frequently be refreshing after the hundreds of Electro-tech and Grunge sites
I see at any given time. (which, I have to admit, I actually do like). I
like the simplicity of your site and hope you continue with a culturally
distinguishing design concept. Here are some things I might change with your
current design:

* I like the grape vine navigation at the top of the page, however the
pop-up rectangular buttons are incongruous with the organic style. Also the
necessity to click on those buttons rather than the vine is rather
confusing.

* I would center the navigational grapevine in the frame. At 1024x768
resolution, the navigation stays flush left while the page content in the
lower frame centers on the page.

* On the St. George's page, the Welcome to St. George Orthodox Syrian
Cathedral heading font is appropriate to the style, but needs some help for
better legibility. Perhaps a soft shadow to help the words stand out from
the yellow page background.

* On the same page, the content is flush-left with no left-side margin. I
would add a margin for a more pleasing style.

Let us see the site when it's finished. I'd love to see how it turns out.

remained a pale tan color that made it almost impossible to read. All other

Tim,
I hate to break this to you but you're not having an image problem at all.
You're having a font-size issue. The way you are using the background-color
of the anchor tag to change the color of your links is causing you a
problem. You are using a 8x8px transparent gif surrounded by an anchor tag.
The gif size is remaining stable, but in Mozilla and Opera the anchor tag is
taking up the space required by the default body font size. I sorry to say
but your situation is more complicated then you thought. To continue using
the hover property of the anchor tag as you are, you'll have to set your
anchor to display:block, and give the anchor a height and width value. This
will also require you to make those anchor tags float so that they will line
up side by side as you have them. Which will require you to change your
#ob_heading to a div instead of a span and make it float:left as well. Or,
you could use javascript to do your roll-over color change. It's your choice
of course, but I'd use the hover property like you are.

Hey Everyone. Good morning or afternoon (as may be appropriate).

I've reached a point where I feel safe to ask for a Site Check. The Web
Initiative [ http://www.webinitiative.net ] is now available in versions
4.0, 4.1 and 4.2. This is my first full-featured PHP driven web site, and
I'm quite proud of it. The site has three different styles to choose from,
accomplished by passing a query string with the page URL. The Blog is fully
dynamic - fed from a MySQL database and has what seems to be a standard
feature on Blogger and others; a place for reader comments. The site content
will continue to grow now that the framework is built, but please take a
look around and let me know what you think.

Please report back with your platform/browser/screen res./ what ever else
you think is important. If there's something that looks fishy please send me
a screen shot if you can.

Thanks,

Peter,
Does PS5 have the magnetic lasso? If so, that tool could make your job
rather simple. Draw around the outline of the group and the magnetic lasso
should snap to the shape fairly closely. You may have to touch it up some if
the background has similar colors to your subjects. Once you have the
outline selected, create a new layer and fill the selected area with black.
Deselect all and fill the background (base layer) with white. Is this the
effect you're after?

Yes. I'm going to have to address this issue. Perhaps breaking up the
background and giving the DIV a percentage width value.

 I noticed that wherever my mouse stopped on the front page, the details
of the image appeared. Maybe to do with accessibility - but A bit annoying I
found to have it repeating itself!
I too, have found this annoying on some sites, but alt and title tags are
good for accessibility and useful with search engines since so much of my
site is graphical rather than text.

 Photography page very slow to load - over one minute
Hmmm, at home on a 56k connection, I still get it much faster than that.

 Running mouse over the three sidebar options causes them to disappear
completely. They come back after a second or two - but a bit disconcerting!

Yeah, I know what you mean. The roll over is done with the CSS hover
property in an effort to avoid problems with people who have JS turned off.
I preload the hover image in a layer off-screen. It still seems to be
inordinately slow.

 Is the date (7.28.2003) meant to be on the Blog page?
Yes. Each entry will have an entry date. Does this seem strange?

 Did you plan to have the Blog page in Times Roman? Doesn't look right!!

I'm open to suggestions.

 That's my two pence worth for you...Well done...Cheers

Yes, there are a lot of graphics but I loads fast for me at work over a
fiber connection.

  My first thought on seeing the different styles that are available is
that they would offer additional functionality as well being cosmetic. By
this I mean: people tend to find different fonts easier to read than others,
so expected that one of these styles would have a different font...

Good point. I've seen plenty of sites where the font was changeable. For
some reason this didn't occur to me on my site.

  Yiff Weenpod is scary. In a mutant Harry Potter/Shredder from the
Ninja Turtles kind of way. It's an interesting piece of art, but I don't
know that I'd incorporate it into the layout.

Another person said something similar to me about the Yiff Weenpod image.
The way I see it, freelance work is just bonus work for me. I might as well
display the kind of work I enjoy doing and in theory, that's the kind of
work I'll get.

 On the Yiff Weenpod layout, in Moz, the right border
of the text box sticks out past the rest of the box.

Yep, gotta fix that.

 The gradients on the two different parts of the top menu aren't
consistent. I understand one side should look like it has a transparent
layer over it, but shaded portions aren't consistent.

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean here. I didn't intend for any
gradients. Can you send a screen shot?

 The blog looks pretty functional... What are you going to do about
archived entries? How many entries will you display at once?

Another good point - or two. I didn't think about archives when I started
and haven't put my mind to a way of limiting the output. These are things I
will have to add as I figure them out.

 I really like your digital graphics. I didn't have any problems with the
sidebar in the photog section. There is no navigation on the contact page.

Thank you, creating graphics is a form of entertainment for me. Glad the
photo section works. The navigation should be at the bottom of the page -
none at the top. All navigation comes from a common include file.

Thanks for taking the time to critique the site.

(div.style.visibility == visible)?

 div.style.visibility = hidden:

 div.style.visibility = visible;}}

in combination with:

a href=filename.html

 onmouseover=ToggleVis(divOne);

 onmouseout=ToggleVis(divOne);

 structure my CSS calls so that only Opera 7 picks it up? I tried @import

 but even opera 6 picks it up.

Hi Erick,

This page may help you:

 2. Would anyone have a good example of show/hide DIVs in a manner that is

 CSS compatible -- I want it to degrade gracefully, i.e., in NS4...

I'm working on a project just like that right now. Our IT team is supplying
users with NN4.7 and IE5.5 so my everything I do has to support both
browsers if possible. Try this:

script type=text/javascript

// here's my simplified sniffer

var msie;

var nn;

if(navigator.appName == Microsoft Internet Explorer){

msie = navigator.appName;}

if(navigator.appName == Netscape){

nn = navigator.appName;}

var tab;

function ToggleLayer(){

if(msie){

tab_one = document.getElementById(tabOne);

(tab_one.style.visibility == visible)?

tab_one.style.visibility = hidden:

tab_one.style.visibility = visible;}

if(nn){

tab_one = document.layers[tabOne];

(tab_one.visibility == show)?

tab_one.visibility = hide:

tab_one.visibility = show;}}

/script

The function works like a toggle switch so you use the same function in both
the onMouseover and onMouseout.

OK, there was mourning going on earlier today over the lack of beginners. So
here's a beginner question. How in the world do I get rid of the margins

The div is nested inside a table layout and this must be causing some of the

==

Stephen,

The default width for a DIV is 100% of the container. If you do not define a
width, it will fill the available space. When you give the DIV left and
right margins of 15% the browser automatically calculates the remainder and
make the DIV 70% - you don't have to tell it that. When you do, it gets
confused. Pull the width value and let the browser do your work for you.

Sherry, there was no slight intended towards you. I did leave a message, but
alas, you need to have JavaScript turned on to get it. I can understand your
favor for NN4.7, it used to be my favorite browser too, until I started
trying to design web sites of my own. Then I discovered how difficult it
was to do a good job and make NN4x happy. That browser has a way of tripling
design time, which is why I don't support it if I don't have too.

It looks *lots* different on Opera! I do like the colours, very polished and

[Perry]

I'm glad you like my site when it appears as I intended. Thanks for the
compliment. Yes, the text portion of the site is in an IFrame (an internal
frame that can be placed anywhere on the page). IFrames are not part of the
current W3C standards but they are supported by many of the current popular
browsers. For me, an IFrame's biggest asset is the ability to introduce new
content into the parent page without refreshing the whole page. There
definitely not the answer for all sites but I think they have their place in
web design.

Nicely done, Perry.

Couple of suggestions: the send and clear buttons look plain; perhaps
using CSS

any problem with it :-)

[Perry]

H, I see what you mean. Initially I thought the diagonal line of the
boxes was attractive, but now I think it doesn't fit. Everything else on the
site is very perpendicular.

I seem to recall that you wanted to make the site standards-compliant,

which probably explains why you are not messing around with the colors of

the scrollbars. A lavender-colored scroll bar with blue arrows would have

looked good, though. *smiles*

[Perry]

With this particular site design, I want my code to validate to XHTML strict
standards but don't mind adding some things that may help the design without
making the site break in compliant browsers. So, I do want to change the
scrollbar colors, but the browser I was viewing my design on was IE5.0 which
does not see the scrollbar colors. I didn't want to drive blind, as it were.

Thanks for the feedback.

... probably because I've got JS disabled in it.

[Perry]

This is the second time I've heard of the Phoenix browser. Maybe both times
from you. When did this one come on the scene? Does it have much popularity?
Who makes it?

IE6 makes a complete mess of it - in 800x600 you can't even see the content:

  http://laughing-buddha.net/tmp/wi-ie6-800.gif

In 1280x1024 (my usual resolution) it's only marginally better:

  http://laughing-buddha.net/tmp/wi-ie6-1280.gif

[Perry]

I think I see what's happening, but I don't know why. Seems like IE6 is
adding more left side margin than I called for. The definition and image is
in a DIV floated left, and the links and IFrame are in another DIV floating
against it. Because IE6 is giving too much margin, the right hand DIV is
squeezed out.

One design note: I'm not convinced about the scrolling div or whatever it

is that's holding the content... I spent my money on a big monitor so I

could see more information onscreen at once, but that's completely defeated

by a site that keeps everything in a tiny little window (I *knew* I should

have spent it on beer instead ;-)

[Perry]

Nice way of saying WTF is with this design? ;)

Here's the explanation. I've fallen in with a group of D'Zyners in my city
that create some very artistic sites. In my heart I'm an artist and somewhat
of a perfectionist, but I've been gripped by a fascination with high quality
web development as well. Where I know that the most functional sites will
be fluid in design and cater to the viewers wishes, in the case of the Web
Initiative, I wanted to make a structurally sound site with a little flair.
The design I ultimately decided to go with didn't work as a fluid site due
to the grid pattern and the shadow on many of the graphics. I wanted to have
a random image on the page as well which explains the JavaScript issue you
ran into. I figure if some people want to thwart the functionality of the
web by disabling features, I guess they're just going to miss some things.
If this site were an online store, trying to reach every customer available,
I probably would have designed it very differently.

Incidentally, congratulations on your ICBL entry - when do you find out the

result?

[Perry]

Oh, I have already discovered I didn't win. Just haven't updated that site
description yet. I thrilled to have come in second place. I never really
thought I'd get that close.

Thanks Jon.

Sherry,

I think you're getting the b [bold] tag confused with the br [break]
tag.

Boldness is better implemented by other possibilities within CSS. Cascading
Style Sheets give us a means of separating page style from page structure.
We can use HTML or XHTML to build the framework of the web pages of our
site. Then, in a single location, we can define the look or style of the
site and cascade that homogenous look to the entire site through CSS. If we
have style elements embedded throughout our web site, to change our style,
we have to hunt down all those attributes and change them one at a time. If
the site style is centralized and cascaded, we can change the style once,
and effect the entire site.

So, an example of using CSS might look like this in our page:

How many times have I asked you to strongput down the toilet seat/strong
?

and in our style sheet, on Monday we want strong to look like this:

style type=text/css

strong {font-size:14pt; font-weight:bold;}

/style

Throughout your site everyplace there's a strong tag, the text will be
large and bold.

But on Wednesday, we change our mind and think strong should look like this:

style type=text/css

strong {font-size:12pt; font-weight:normal; font-style:italic;
color:red;}

/style

Now, with little effort at all, strong tags will be 12pt, red, and italic.

To clear up the other issue. In strict XHTML all tags need to be closed. so
a p tag needs a /p in every case and a stand alone tag like br needs
to have a closing slash as well, like this br /.

Hopefully, this will make things a little clearer for you. :)

  Oh bother, this is doing my head in. When I use @import

  NN 4.7.2 I don' t even want to look at it in 4.7

  See http://www.odihpn.org/revamp/joindraft.htm

Siobhan,

I wasn't following this thread 100%, so I don't know how completely the
@import method was explained. Basically, only the more recent, semi
standards compliant browsers will recognize @import. Using this method of
importing your style sheet is a handy way to hide certain styles from older
browsers which may cause them to choke. If I do want to supply NN4x with
some basic style, and feed the more complex styles to compliant browsers, I
do this:

  link href=basic_style.css rel=stylesheet type=text/css

  style type=text/css
@import url(advanced_style.css);
  /style

Make sure you place the @import url(advanced_style.css) second, because
what you're doing is redefining the style rules for compliant browsers,
which were first set in basic_style.css.
=

  And, I don't really understand the default body text. What
  does changing BODY do?

For Netscape 4x, you'll need to define your font characteristics for every
kind of block level container you might put text into. So:

body, p, div, td {
font-family:Verdana, Arial, Sans-serif;
font-size:11pt;
color:#00;
line-height:14pt;
text-align:left;}

  a reference to
  an image. I'm planning on renaming the image via the ASP.NET

  In the past I would just insert the data without the image

  table again to get the new record ID, then insert the image
  data into the
  table with the new image name (ie., image01.jpg), and
  finally save the image

  My goal is to only hit the database once... if possible.
  Anyone feel free to

[wdvltalk] New site, baffling problem.

2002-12-10 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)
Hey Everybody,

I've recently launched a web site for my wife. She will be running in the
Music City Marathon, here in Nashville, in the spring, to raise money for
the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She has already surpassed her goal for
donations so this is *not* a solicitation for money. :) I'd like comments on
the site, general or pointed, either are fine. IE6 PC users especially,
please look at the donation page. For some reason beyond my comprehension,
the DIV that hold the page content is too narrow and will not line up with
the top and bottom graphics. This is only happening in IE6. I've checked the
site in IE5, Mozilla 1.0, Opera 6, and even NN4.0. The DIV lines up
everywhere except IE6. (did I say that already?) Anyone with an answer will
be exempt from later solicitations for money. (just kidding)

Lisa,

No, I didn't try a table on the donation page, though I am using a table
with absolute width on the honorees page. The only reason I used tables at
all is to appease NN4x, which I believe some of the site visitors will be
using. A DIV with a set width value should hold the width properly. I have
adjusted for the variance between browsers dealing with the box model but
the problem persists. (IE6 only) It's still a mystery.

  Are you aware that your stylesheet has the following definition:

  width:524px; w\idth:478px;

Hi Howard,

Yes, that definition is intentional. The slash allows me to redefine the
width for browsers that follow the standardized box model. The DIV has 40px
of padding and 6px of border. 524-40-6=478.

  ...Also, your content_top.gif image
  is 534px wide,
  10px more than your content div, which is probably why they
  don't line up.

The content_top.gif is wider because if also has some of the background
color on each side. (should have made the background transparent but I was
lazy.)

Thanks for looking. Apparently this will not be easy.

Mignon,

Yes, it would help much to see your images and how they impact the site
design.

  div id=TopBar style=position:absolute; width:105%;
  height:100px; z-index:1; left: 0px; top: 0px; background-image:
  url(images/top_slice.jpg); layer-background-image:
  url(images/top_slice.jpg); border: 0px none #00img
  src=images/pic2.jpg
  /div

Why is this DIV 105% wide? The percentage is related to the window width.
You are creating a horizontal scroll bar that seems to be unnecessary.
:::

  div id=SideBar style=position:absolute; width:100px;
  height:85%; z-index:2; left: 0px; top: 100px; background-image:
  url(images/SideBack.gif); layer-background-image:
  url(images/SideBack.gif); border: 0px none #00img
  src=images/pic1.jpg
  /div

This DIV is 85% of the window height. Do you want it to stop 15% short of
the window bottom? Since it is positioned absolutely, down 100px from the
page top, it extends beyond the length of the window. DIV with an absolute
location are removed from the normal page flow and don't cause the page to
lengthen automatically.
:::

  div id=Nav style=position:absolute; width:95px; z-index:3;
  above=SideBar; top: 115px; left: -1pxAll sorts brof
  Extra Stuffbr
  gets loaded here,brmainly navigation./div

Curious. What does above=SideBar do? Does Nav overlap the image in
SideBar? Why is Nav positioned 1px off the left side of the screen?
:::

  div id=Content style=position:absolute; width:75%;
  height:75%; z-index:4; left: 110px; top: 110px
  Content of site gets loaded here
  /div

Perhaps you could try making Content part of the page flow like this:

div id=Content style=margin-left:110px; height:75%;
Content of site gets loaded here
/div

My IE5.5 is having a problem accepting a margin-top value along with a
height percentage on the Content DIV.
My solution is to add 110px padding-top to the body tag:

body style=padding-top:110px;

This will push the Content DIV down below TopBar.
:

  div id=Footer style=z-index:5; width:100%; height:50px;
  left: 0px; background-image:  url(themes/Jims/images/bottom_slice.jpg);
  layer-background-image:  url(themes/Jims/images/bottom_slice.jpg);
  border: noneimg src=themes/Jims/images/bottom.jpg/div

Footer is the only DIV that you have remaining in the regular page flow.
As you have it set, Footer is at the top of the screen, hidden behind
TopBar. If you return Content to the normal page flow as I suggested,
Footer will fall immediately below it and will move down if Content
increases in height. Give Footer a margin-left:110px also if you want it
to line up flush with Content.

Mark,
Thanks for taking such a detailed look at my code. I can see why the empty
DIVs used to clear the float characteristics might cause some confusion for
the validator. They probably looks like something that's been misplaced.

  . Just a thought, you've got the flow of the code
  reading the right content before the left, maybe there's a div/class
  that may show up as the culprit switching them around to read left to
  right - btw, shouldn't make a bit of difference though, hmmm.

Granted the right to left flow seems odd, but it had to do with the way the
right column was acting as a float. I went through several permutations
trying to get things to behave correctly.

[wdvltalk] Re: [SCR] http://www.steveharrison.net/design

2002-09-25 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)

Quoth Andrew Trusz,

  ...So I'm curious, are you all using a
  single stylesheet for a site or do you
  have to constantly tweak on a page by
  page basis? I don't mean tweaking for browsers,
  I mean tweaking for aesthetics. And do you
  write your own or use an editor?

Andy,

I usually write one site-wide stylesheet for standards compliant browsers,
and a simplified stylesheet for non-compliant browsers. When there are
unique elements on each page, (almost always) I assign IDs to the elements
to give them specific features. Sometimes there are elements which have many
similar characteristics, such as a column of links, but one or two of them
have unique features in addition to the similar ones. In this case I write a
Class to define all the similarities and also an ID (perhaps for a top or
bottom margin) to single out the uniqueness. So for example; I have 10
links, each one displays as a block element, is 100px wide, 25px high, and
has a 1px blue border. I want all the links to stack directly on top of each
other with no margins between them. So I write a class to define these. Now,
the top link needs to push the whole column of links down 15px from the
element above them, so I also give it an ID to define that 15px top margin.
In this way I minimize how many style sheets I need to write to control
unique pages.

I find that working directly with the CSS rather then through a secondary
layer (editor) cuts down on the idiosyncrasies I have to deal with. I don't
believe it's all that hard to remember CSS coding. It's also a source of
pride for me to be able to work without the assistance of an editing
program. Others, of course, may not have this characteristic/handicap.

Hi Stephen,

Well I'm rather baffled. I checked the site in IE5.5, IE6, and Mozilla 1.0,
all on a PC. I don't get any errors. Your error message said line 17,
character 1. By my count that's your body tag. Nothing strange there that
I can see. The Object expected error usually comes from a Javascript
problem. I noted that you have a JS function to open a new window, about
mid-way down your page, but don't actually use it anywhere. Maybe take that
out of the code and see if your error goes away. That's just a shot in the
dark of course.

Good Luck,

 Jac,

Two things come to mind for me when I hear digital tape. DAT (digital audio
tape) which would be recorded and played back on a DAT recorder. You could
probably rent one, inexpensively, from an Audio /Visual rental company and
transfer the files to your computer. The other possibility, as I see it,
would be DV( digital video). DV camcorders are getting to be pretty common
and may soon be outselling VHS and 8mm. If you or someone you know does not
have a DV camcorder, you can rent one of these easily, as well.

Hi Jac,

If you have Photoshop it's really easy. I have version 5.5. Double click a
color swatch in the tools bar to open the color picker. Choose a color or
type in you CMYK values then click on Custom. In this window you'll find a
drop down list with a number of color systems including Pantone. Choose
Pantone coated to give you a similar look to what your seeing on screen,

[wdvltalk] Re: CSS Hacks, etc.

2002-09-10 Thread Gerenday, Perry (P.)

-Original Message-
From: Ross Clutterbuck [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]

  In my experience I've only ever had to use the Tantek
  voice-family hack once per CSS file...

You may be the Master of the Universe but I can one-up you on CSS. :)
I've never used the Tantek voice-family hack, even once. I do, however,
correct for the IE5x broken box model, without the use of Javascript.

Personally, I can never remember how the Tantek hack is put together. It
makes no sense to me. It looks like a train wreck of brackets and slashes.
If it doesn't make sense to me, it won't stick in my head. I use the
simplified box model hack, written by Andrew Clover (full description of
Tantek and Simplified Box Model hack found on his site here:
http://and.doxdesk.com/personal/posts/css/20020212-bmh.html ). To try and
keep the SBMH simple, here's how it works:

#myDiv {width:150px; w\idth:146px; height:50px; he\ight:46px; border:2px
solid #00;}

IE5x gets the box model wrong.
  (reduces DIV interior space equivalent to the width of any border and/or
padding)
Standards compliant browsers such as IE 6, NN 6+, Mozilla 1.0, Opera 6 do
the box model correctly.
  (Expands a DIV beyond its height and width values by the amount of padding
and/or border)

We can redefine any value within a CSS rule and browsers will follow the
last recognized value stated for that attribute.
The above mentioned, compliant browsers, will properly parse CSS with escape
characters (backslash) included within the code. IE 5x does not recognize
escape characters and will pass over the redefined value.

To use the SBMH we have to know that we cannot use an escape character
before the letters A thru F because they are interpreted as hexadecimal
numbers. We can safely escape any letter from G thru Z.

For those searching for the Holy Grail, Yes, this does validate as CSS2!!

NN4x does not play along, as you might guess. You can use the @import
method, mentioned by Ross, to exclude non-compliant browsers from you
advanced CSS.

You can see a working example of the SBMH on my site at:
www.webinitiative.net with the CSS at: www.webinitiative.net/advanced.css .

  the same size as the one on
  http://www.interactwiththe.net/index.old.php

Hey Matt,

The problem isn't related to CSS at all, just good old fashion HTML. Your
problem is here:

td class=nav rowspan=2 a href=news.phpimg
src=images/News.jpg alt=News //a
  br /
  a href=bands.phpimg src=images/bands.jpg alt=Bands //a br
/
  a href=venues.phpimg src=images/venues.jpg alt=Venues //a
br /
  a href=join.phpimg src=images/Join.jpg alt=Join //a
/td

The td is set with a rowspan of 2. The images inside are determining the
height of that cell and the two table cells to it's right are equally
dividing the height they're forced to take up.

  should open in the Arena.
  This should happen for every hyperlink.

Hi Pradeep,

There are two ways that come to mind to accomplish what your looking for.
They both involve frames of one type or another.

Standard frames:

html
frameset cols=120,*
!--Creates two columns. Left column 120px wide, right column fills the
remainder of the window. --

frame src=link_file.html name=navcol/frame
frame src=initial_file.html name=arena/frame
/frameset

Your links in link_file.html would look like this:

a href=about.html target=arenahplink1/a
a href=why.html target=arenahplink2/a
/html

===

I frames (supported by IE4+, NN6+, Moz1.0, Opera5+):

HTML
HEAD
TITLEArena in an Iframe/TITLE
/HEAD
BODY

div style=float:left; width:120px; height:100%; border:2px solid
#ff;
a href=about.html target=arenahplink1/abr /
a href=why.html target=arenahplink2/a
/div

Iframe src=initial_file.html name=arena width=500
height=100%/Iframe

/BODY
/HTML

Change file name and styles to suit your needs and that should do it for
you.

You'll have to put your text in a layer as well as the animated logo before

Ines,

If I remember correctly, you were floating three DIVs side by side in you
page layout, yes?
If your goal is to clear the float characteristics, you can use br
style=clear:both /. This will clear the float behavior in a design where
you have more than one element floated, some to the left and some to the
right. Alternatively, you can use a DIV rather than a br / to clear a
floated object. Using a DIV with no size attributes defined will clear the
floats without creating a gap in your design flow. Valid CSS includes
clear:left; clear:right; and clear:both.
