RE: [wdvltalk] Registering an existing domain
-Original Message- From: Ross Clutterbuck If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state then it comes open for purchase. Only at that stage will your client be able to grab it. There was an article on Sitepoint I recently read about expired domain names. I forgot to renew my domain on the first of January this year, and a couple weeks later was able to renew it. You might ask them to have someone objectively review their site. It comes across as unprofessional to me. I found four typos while reading just two pages. Additionally, the homepage content is hard to understand. They have a link claiming valid XHMTL but if you click it, the result reveals quite explicitly that the page does not validate. Who's telling the truth, and who's not? When I used their search tool to search for the word window I got this: window.document.getElementById(’post-2′).parentNode.className += ‘ adhesive_post’; There are literally hundreds of window companies with thousands of salespeople. RE: [wdvltalk] PHP: determine if a directory is empty
Hang tight everyone. I'm not ignoring you. I'm systematically trying all your suggestions. So far with little success. My continued failure is probably due to my novice understanding of PHP. Charles: I thought the break would work too, but $file never evaluates to an empty string, even when I try to exclude the '.' and '..'. The array concept looks promising. I was trying that earlier, wasn't defining the array correctly. My loop kept spelling out the file names one letter at a time. Pat Richard: Tried the counter. Seemed like it should work but if there are no files, the output echoes There are no files in the folder twice, while the loop is counting. When there are files, I get the text string and file names. Maybe I have the counter in the wrong place in the script. Not sure. Steven Olson: Your idea about sending the output to a file sounds promising. I just have to figure out how to do that so I can test the concept. Do you mean send it to an intermediary php page to count the lines? Ummm, how do I count the line? Stephen Caudill: You suggest testing to see if there is a directory. I don't plan on deleting the directory when no files are present. Will this test still work even if the directory exists but is empty? [wdvltalk] Alphanumeric Ordered List

On a PC hold down the Ctrl key and with the arrow or Move tool, click on the specific layer you want in the layers dropdown menu. (On a mac, I believe it's the Command key) The layer that you want will be selected with the marching ants border. In the top, text menu choose Edit Copy. [wdvltalk] Site Check Please
Hey everyone, I've been in lurker mode for quite some time but I'm still around and looking for some help. Can I get a few of you to look at a site redesign I'm working on? I've had some issues with the CSS not working across browser / platform / operating systems. Because of the subject of the site, I really only anticipate visitors with run-of-the-mill browsers, but that still leaves quite a few variations. As is my habit, [read: downfall] the site really needs pixel perfect alignment. I'm using Javascript to serve up browser appropriate style sheets rather than CSS hacks, which seem to be failing in some cases. [wdvltalk] Re: Site Check Please [Rudy]
From: rudy the site is totally useless with javascript turned off Hmmm. Rudy, my suggestion to you, as a user of the WWW, would be to stop disabling features of your browser that were developed to enhance your browsing experience. Then, as a developer, find a survey - or conduct one yourself, to find out how many average individuals disable Javascript in their browser, know they can turn it off, or even know what Javascript actually is. I've done a little survey of my own recently, which included an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering (my wife) and the Director of IT for a multi-national corporation (my brother). All those surveyed were frequent users of the WWW and none of them had Javascript turned off. Some of them made a pretty accurate guess at how to disabling Javascript but none knew exactly how to do it. I submit that Javascript is not an evil creature laying in wait for the unsuspecting web surfer but rather a useful tool. Do you lock away your carpenter's hammer and use your shoe to drive nails because you heard tales of people who have smashed them thumbs? I doubt it. so boo for using javascript to sniff my browser and then fail to deliver a working stylesheet which just happens to contain eveything functional Despite me belief that Javascript is a viable tool, I agree here. I should have provided for the event of complete JS failure by leaving a latent style sheet. but yay for not giving me the rude Sorry, your browser does not meet current W3C standards and needs to be updated to see this page properly. message Try looking with NN4.7. Hi Stephen, I am always so fascinated by web sites that give me a view of cultures different from my own in the United States. The design concepts can frequently be refreshing after the hundreds of Electro-tech and Grunge sites I see at any given time. (which, I have to admit, I actually do like). I like the simplicity of your site and hope you continue with a culturally distinguishing design concept. Here are some things I might change with your current design: * I like the grape vine navigation at the top of the page, however the pop-up rectangular buttons are incongruous with the organic style. Also the necessity to click on those buttons rather than the vine is rather confusing. * I would center the navigational grapevine in the frame. At 1024x768 resolution, the navigation stays flush left while the page content in the lower frame centers on the page. * On the St. George's page, the Welcome to St. George Orthodox Syrian Cathedral heading font is appropriate to the style, but needs some help for better legibility. Perhaps a soft shadow to help the words stand out from the yellow page background. * On the same page, the content is flush-left with no left-side margin. I would add a margin for a more pleasing style. Let us see the site when it's finished. I'd love to see how it turns out. Take a look: http://www.greaterthani.com/02_relaunch/ Tim, I hate to break this to you but you're not having an image problem at all. You're having a font-size issue. The way you are using the background-color of the anchor tag to change the color of your links is causing you a problem. You are using a 8x8px transparent gif surrounded by an anchor tag. The gif size is remaining stable, but in Mozilla and Opera the anchor tag is taking up the space required by the default body font size. I sorry to say but your situation is more complicated then you thought. To continue using the hover property of the anchor tag as you are, you'll have to set your anchor to display:block, and give the anchor a height and width value. This will also require you to make those anchor tags float so that they will line up side by side as you have them. Which will require you to change your #ob_heading to a div instead of a span and make it float:left as well. Or, you could use javascript to do your roll-over color change. It's your choice of course, but I'd use the hover property like you are. Another person said something similar to me about the Yiff Weenpod image. The way I see it, freelance work is just bonus work for me. I might as well display the kind of work I enjoy doing and in theory, that's the kind of work I'll get. On the Yiff Weenpod layout, in Moz, the right border of the text box sticks out past the rest of the box. Yep, gotta fix that. The gradients on the two different parts of the top menu aren't consistent. I understand one side should look like it has a transparent layer over it, but shaded portions aren't consistent. I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean here. I didn't intend for any gradients. Can you send a screen shot? The blog looks pretty functional... What are you going to do about archived entries? How many entries will you display at once? Another good point - or two. I didn't think about archives when I started and haven't put my mind to a way of limiting the output. These are things I will have to add as I figure them out. I really like your digital graphics. I didn't have any problems with the sidebar in the photog section. There is no navigation on the contact page. Thank you, creating graphics is a form of entertainment for me. Glad the photo section works. The navigation should be at the bottom of the page - none at the top. All navigation comes from a common include file. Thanks for taking the time to critique the site. If I went there, I would assume the site doesn't work or isn't finished. [Perry] Sherry, there was no slight intended towards you. I did leave a message, but alas, you need to have JavaScript turned on to get it. I can understand your favor for NN4.7, it used to be my favorite browser too, until I started trying to design web sites of my own. Then I discovered how difficult it was to do a good job and make NN4x happy. That browser has a way of tripling design time, which is why I don't support it if I don't have too. It looks *lots* different on Opera! I do like the colours, very polished and professional looking. Congratulations on having the only nice use of frames I've ever seen (if, indeed, that is frames I'm looking at in that nicely framed box). The buttons disappear when I roll over and I find that disconcerting and distracting. [Perry] I'm glad you like my site when it appears as I intended. Thanks for the compliment. Yes, the text portion of the site is in an IFrame (an internal frame that can be placed anywhere on the page). IFrames are not part of the current W3C standards but they are supported by many of the current popular browsers. For me, an IFrame's biggest asset is the ability to introduce new content into the parent page without refreshing the whole page. [Perry] Thanks, glad you like the site and colors. I keep my screen at 1024x768 but test sites at 800x600 as well. The site fits when I change my resolution. I wonder if you had something a little less than the usual 780px of width that are usually available. Tested the form. Hopefully it made it into your inbox safely. [Perry] Yes, I receive the form. Thanks. Couple of suggestions: the send and clear buttons look plain; perhaps using CSS to make them match the input fields would make them look spiffier. [Perry] I agree. Also, to me, the staggered positioning of date, name, and email boxes was a little distracting - but that's just me, other people probably don't have any problem with it :-) [Perry] H, I see what you mean. Initially I thought the diagonal line of the boxes was attractive, but now I think it doesn't fit. Everything else on the site is very perpendicular. I seem to recall that you wanted to make the site standards-compliant, which probably explains why you are not messing around with the colors of the scrollbars. A lavender-colored scroll bar with blue arrows would have looked good, though. *smiles* [Perry] With this particular site design, I want my code to validate to XHTML strict standards but don't mind adding some things that may help the design without making the site break in compliant browsers. So, I do want to change the scrollbar colors, but the browser I was viewing my design on was IE5.0 which does not see the scrollbar colors. I didn't want to drive blind, as it were. Because IE6 is giving too much margin, the right hand DIV is squeezed out. One design note: I'm not convinced about the scrolling div or whatever it is that's holding the content... I spent my money on a big monitor so I could see more information onscreen at once, but that's completely defeated by a site that keeps everything in a tiny little window (I *knew* I should have spent it on beer instead ;-) [Perry] Nice way of saying WTF is with this design? ;) Here's the explanation. I've fallen in with a group of D'Zyners in my city that create some very artistic sites. In my heart I'm an artist and somewhat of a perfectionist, but I've been gripped by a fascination with high quality web development as well. Where I know that the most functional sites will be fluid in design and cater to the viewers wishes, in the case of the Web Initiative, I wanted to make a structurally sound site with a little flair. The design I ultimately decided to go with didn't work as a fluid site due to the grid pattern and the shadow on many of the graphics. I wanted to have a random image on the page as well which explains the JavaScript issue you ran into. I figure if some people want to thwart the functionality of the web by disabling features, I guess they're just going to miss some things. If this site were an online store, trying to reach every customer available, I probably would have designed it very differently. Incidentally, congratulations on your ICBL entry - when do you find out the result? [Perry] Oh, I have already discovered I didn't win. Just haven't updated that site description yet. I thrilled to have come in second place. I never really thought I'd get that close. Thanks Jon. Sherry, I think you're getting the b [bold] tag confused with the br [break] tag. Boldness is better implemented by other possibilities within CSS. Cascading Style Sheets give us a means of separating page style from page structure. We can use HTML or XHTML to build the framework of the web pages of our site. Then, in a single location, we can define the look or style of the site and cascade that homogenous look to the entire site through CSS. If we have style elements embedded throughout our web site, to change our style, we have to hunt down all those attributes and change them one at a time. If the site style is centralized and cascaded, we can change the style once, and effect the entire site. So, an example of using CSS might look like this in our page: How many times have I asked you to strongput down the toilet seat/strong ? and in our style sheet, on Monday we want strong to look like this: style type=text/css strong {font-size:14pt; font-weight:bold;} /style Throughout your site everyplace there's a strong tag, the text will be large and bold. But on Wednesday, we change our mind and think strong should look like this: style type=text/css strong {font-size:12pt; font-weight:normal; font-style:italic; color:red;} /style Now, with little effort at all, strong tags will be 12pt, red, and italic. To clear up the other issue. In strict XHTML all tags need to be closed. so a p tag needs a /p in every case and a stand alone tag like br needs to have a closing slash as well, like this br /. Hopefully, this will make things a little clearer for you. :) Perry Gerenday www.klugelab.com www.webinitiative.net The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change subscription settings to the wdvltalk digest version: http://wdvl.internet.com/WDVL/Forum/#sub http://www.wdvl.com ___ You are currently subscribed to wdvltalk as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

-Original Message- From: Siobhan Thomas [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Oh bother, this is doing my head in. When I use @import there are no input boxes for NN 4.7.2 I don' t even want to look at it in 4.7 See http://www.odihpn.org/revamp/joindraft.htm Siobhan, I wasn't following this thread 100%, so I don't know how completely the @import method was explained. Basically, only the more recent, semi standards compliant browsers will recognize @import. Using this method of importing your style sheet is a handy way to hide certain styles from older browsers which may cause them to choke. If I do want to supply NN4x with some basic style, and feed the more complex styles to compliant browsers, I do this: link href=basic_style.css rel=stylesheet type=text/css style type=text/css @import url(advanced_style.css); /style Make sure you place the @import url(advanced_style.css) second, because what you're doing is redefining the style rules for compliant browsers, which were first set in basic_style.css. = And, I don't really understand the default body text. What does changing BODY do? For Netscape 4x, you'll need to define your font characteristics for every kind of block level container you might put text into. So: body, p, div, td { font-family:Verdana, Arial, Sans-serif; font-size:11pt; color:#00; line-height:14pt; text-align:left;} == HTH Perry Gerenday www.klugelab.com www.webinitiative.net The WDVL Discussion List from WDVL.COM To Join wdvltalk, Send An Email To: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Send Your Posts To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To change subscription settings to the wdvltalk digest version: http://wdvl.internet.com/WDVL/Forum/#sub http://www.wdvl.com ___ You are currently subscribed to wdvltalk as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In the past I would just insert the data without the image field, query the table again to get the new record ID, then insert the image data into the table with the new image name (ie., image01.jpg), and finally save the image to the file system. [wdvltalk] New site, baffling problem.
Hey Everybody, I've recently launched a web site for my wife. She will be running in the Music City Marathon, here in Nashville, in the spring, to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She has already surpassed her goal for donations so this is *not* a solicitation for money. :) I'd like comments on the site, general or pointed, either are fine. IE6 PC users especially, please look at the donation page. For some reason beyond my comprehension, the DIV that hold the page content is too narrow and will not line up with the top and bottom graphics. This is only happening in IE6. I've checked the site in IE5, Mozilla 1.0, Opera 6, and even NN4.0. The DIV lines up everywhere except IE6. (did I say that already?) Anyone with an answer will be exempt from later solicitations for money. [wdvltalk] XHTML and input tags
Sorry if everyone gets this post twice. I think it got kicked out because I had form tags in the body. I've changed the brackets below to avoid problems. Thanks to the heads-up from Jon, (thanks Jon) I have an entry almost ready for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines site redesign contest. I have one hitch that I'm aware of that keeps my entry from validating XHTML strict. [wdvltalk] Re: [SCR] http://www.steveharrison.net/design
Quoth Andrew Trusz, ...So I'm curious, are you all using a single stylesheet for a site or do you have to constantly tweak on a page by page basis? I don't mean tweaking for browsers, I mean tweaking for aesthetics. And do you write your own or use an editor? Andy, I usually write one site-wide stylesheet for standards compliant browsers, and a simplified stylesheet for non-compliant browsers. When there are unique elements on each page, (almost always) I assign IDs to the elements to give them specific features. Sometimes there are elements which have many similar characteristics, such as a column of links, but one or two of them have unique features in addition to the similar ones. In this case I write a Class to define all the similarities and also an ID (perhaps for a top or bottom margin) to single out the uniqueness. So for example; I have 10 links, each one displays as a block element, is 100px wide, 25px high, and has a 1px blue border. I want all the links to stack directly on top of each other with no margins between them. So I write a class to define these. Now, the top link needs to push the whole column of links down 15px from the element above them, so I also give it an ID to define that 15px top margin. In this way I minimize how many style sheets I need to write to control unique pages. I find that working directly with the CSS rather then through a secondary layer (editor) cuts down on the idiosyncrasies I have to deal with. I don't believe it's all that hard to remember CSS coding. It's also a source of pride for me to be able to work without the assistance of an editing program. Others, of course, may not have this characteristic/handicap. -Original Message- From: Stephen Caudill [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] ...shed some light on where this weird object expected error is coming from. The page is: http://neohero.municode.com/munitest/ the error only seems to be in IE 6. Hi Stephen, Well I'm rather baffled. I checked the site in IE5.5, IE6, and Mozilla 1.0, all on a PC. I don't get any errors. Your error message said line 17, character 1. By my count that's your body tag. Nothing strange there that I can see. The Object expected error usually comes from a Javascript problem. I noted that you have a JS function to open a new window, about mid-way down your page, but don't actually use it anywhere. Maybe take that out of the code and see if your error goes away. That's just a shot in the dark of course. Jac, Two things come to mind for me when I hear digital tape. DAT (digital audio tape) which would be recorded and played back on a DAT recorder. You could probably rent one, inexpensively, from an Audio /Visual rental company and transfer the files to your computer. The other possibility, as I see it, would be DV( digital video). DV camcorders are getting to be pretty common and may soon be outselling VHS and 8mm. If you or someone you know does not have a DV camcorder, you can rent one of these easily, as well. [wdvltalk] Re: CSS Hacks, etc.
-Original Message- From: Ross Clutterbuck [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] In my experience I've only ever had to use the Tantek voice-family hack once per CSS file... You may be the Master of the Universe but I can one-up you on CSS. :) I've never used the Tantek voice-family hack, even once. I do, however, correct for the IE5x broken box model, without the use of Javascript. Personally, I can never remember how the Tantek hack is put together. It makes no sense to me. It looks like a train wreck of brackets and slashes. If it doesn't make sense to me, it won't stick in my head. I use the simplified box model hack, written by Andrew Clover (full description of Tantek and Simplified Box Model hack found on his site here: http://and.doxdesk.com/personal/posts/css/20020212-bmh.html ). To try and keep the SBMH simple, here's how it works: #myDiv {width:150px; w\idth:146px; height:50px; he\ight:46px; border:2px solid #00;} IE5x gets the box model wrong. (reduces DIV interior space equivalent to the width of any border and/or padding) Standards compliant browsers such as IE 6, NN 6+, Mozilla 1.0, Opera 6 do the box model correctly. (Expands a DIV beyond its height and width values by the amount of padding and/or border) We can redefine any value within a CSS rule and browsers will follow the last recognized value stated for that attribute. The above mentioned, compliant browsers, will properly parse CSS with escape characters (backslash) included within the code. IE 5x does not recognize escape characters and will pass over the redefined value. To use the SBMH we have to know that we cannot use an escape character before the letters A thru F because they are interpreted as hexadecimal numbers. We can safely escape any letter from G thru Z. For those searching for the Holy Grail, Yes, this does validate as CSS2!! NN4x does not play along, as you might guess. You can use the @import method, mentioned by Ross, to exclude non-compliant browsers from you advanced CSS. You can see a working example of the SBMH on my site at: www.webinitiative.net with the CSS at: www.webinitiative.net/advanced.css . -Original Message- From: Ines Robbers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] can someone explain to me why the tag br clear=all / does not validate as as XHTML 1.0 Strict? Ines, If I remember correctly, you were floating three DIVs side by side in you page layout, yes? If your goal is to clear the float characteristics, you can use br style=clear:both /. This will clear the float behavior in a design where you have more than one element floated, some to the left and some to the right. Alternatively, you can use a DIV rather than a br / to clear a floated object. Using a DIV with no size attributes defined will clear the floats without creating a gap in your design flow. Valid CSS includes clear:left; clear:right; and clear:both.
