i would rather see it split that way:

- output devices (display drivers, mouse cursors, display setup, rendering, OpenGL)
- input devices (keyboards, mice, tablets, touch screens)
- X11 core (security, X11 protocoll, GUI coding, fonts, other internals)

at least that is the cut which i would do by my limited knowledge and interests.

b) the problem realtes to your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 filre
c) try re-running the xf86config program our whatever your config program is.

I hope that helps fixing your problem.

it sounds to me that your problem is much more of basic nature.

* something like out of memory error on the harddisk
comes to my mind. can you check with "df" if there is still enough space?

* have you run and passed a filesystem check for any of your partitions recently?

* maybe there is some strange leftover in your filesystem, like a device file
or a regular file with no permissions that blocks regular operations. i dont know.

for the gnome errors i would rather refer you to the gnome mailing lists in other time,
but it might not unveil the root cause at all. something is more odd at your's.

that authentication problem is right now unknown to me,
maybe some device file that only has root permission whilst
any user should be able to read (and maybe write) it.

try starting "startx" as root and terminate your X11 with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.
with some luck that cleans up anything.

there is possibly a bogus /dev/dri file or subdir which might need manual removal,
or something like that. can you check this?

Subject: [XFree86] (no subject)

hello,

I got a server-crash error that told me to email my error to [EMAIL PROTECTED] I will start by going through how I got it. My problem is that I cannot logon to gnome. I can only logon if I am root. As any other user I can only successfully login if I try a "failsafe xterm" session. This is what happened. One day I must have messed with gdmconfig and when I went to logon again my login screen was different.

It used to be the default RH login with the blue screen, with the login prompt reading welcome to localhost.localdomain.

Now after all daemons are started and I get to the login screen I first get two popups the first says:
---
your session directory is missing or empty

There are two available sessions you can use, but you should logon and correct the gdm configuration
---
and write after I hit ok the second comes and says

--
The configuration was not found, GDM is using defaults to run this session. you could login and create a configuration file with GDM configuration program

--

I guess the defaults are what I see know, because the new login screen has a GNOME image and the screen is a grayish green and there is a timer indicating I have 25 seconds to logon. The options are as follows: Sessions> "LAST" or "failsafe GNOME" or "failsafe xterm" System> "configure" or "reboot" or "halt".

Now I can login as root perfectly. It is as if nothing was wrong.
If I try to login as any user in "failsafe GNOME" I get the following:

-
This is a failsafe gnome session you will be logged into the default session of gnome with no startup scripts run. This is only to fix problems in your installation

--
Then error messages non-stop (It freezes my system) starting with

--
cannot display location
"/home/spacedog/.gnome-desktop" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again
--

--
cannot display location
"/" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again
--

--
cannot display location
"/home/spacedog" is not a valid location. Please check the spelling and try again
--
I also notice that the users wallpaper is loaded and his panel is loaded, all but the applets.

Then I manually restart

As root user I try to mess with gdmconfig and nothing happens, I cant create a new GDM session. I am stumped on what to do. There is not much info on what can go wrong and how to fix it.

I tried changing run-level to 3 and tried to use startx. I received:

Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send the full server output not just the last message.
Please report problems to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

giving up,

xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3) Server error

Thank you

Your HSYNC range is to narrow for the built-in modelines.
For my good old SONY GDM-2063MS i can do something like that:

  HorizSync    31.5 - 80.5
  VertRefresh  60 - 85

Thats provided as it is without any warranty.
It's just an estimation, that worked for me.

Please look into your monitor's manual
for the correct values of your device.

-Alex.

PS: if your monitor has really that low clocks,
then you should generate your own modelines.
there are a nice bunch of modeline tools on the web... and gtf.c is in X4.3.0

Title: RE: [XFree86] Why Is My X Server defaulting 2 vt8 ??

default behaviour means that the X Server
is grabbing the VT with the lowest ID.

this means if you do have VT 1 trough 6
assigned to textmode TTYs then X will grab #7.
if you do run another X server, then it will grab #8.

for more details, i would have a look at "man XFree86".

is a SIS 325 on a grafics board from Elitegroup.

I cannot find a reference to this chipset in the
documentation of X4.2.1,
so you might want to try the X11-VESA drivers.

try to launch it via "/etc/init.d/xfs start".

BTW, your graphics device is nicecly recognized. no problem there.

Title: RE: [XFree86] drivers

XFree86 in version 4.2.1 is availabel for download from the XFree86.org website.

so far that i know there is no individual driver download but only the full package.

If you do have installed Linux from a CD set (like RedHat, SuSE, whatever)
then those drivers are still availabel on the CD, use the respective tools.

If you do have installed from your very own compiled sources,
then just compile again and install again.

sory for that many cases, you didnt gave any hints on what sort of system you are having.

i think the XFree86 binary must have the "sticky" bit set,
which means that it will be executed as root, regardless

x runs as root. check file access rights for /usr/X11R6/bin.

i do feel like cross links to ongoing development projects

at least most users that do have troubles finding a driver

hello,

i just got a CVS snapshot of current sources
and then called "make World" with minor config
adaptions, e.g. DRM forecfully enabled.

the result was a compilation problem at
  /xc/lib/GL/mesa/src

the Imakefile there lists the subdirs
  math array_cache swrast swrast_setup tnl
that are not at all exsiting after the CVS update.

anyone any idea why that does not work at all?
how can this be really fixed?

[XFree86] CVS broken (3rd)? r200

2003-01-13 Thread Alexander Stohr
Title: CVS broken (3rd)? r200

xc/lib/GL/Mesa/src/drv/Makefile references
the non existing "r200" subdir whilst the
Imakefile does not do that.

as far as i can see there is the name
"common" and "DriDrivers" which builds that.
that must originate from xc/cf/xfree86.cf
which defines that set of display drivers.

[XFree86] CVS broken (4th)? expat library

2003-01-13 Thread Alexander Stohr
Title: CVS broken (4th)? expat library

at xc/lib/Imakefile there is a conditional reference
to the non-existing expat subdir.

the conditional is "BuildExpatLibrary" which got automagically
defined for my with xc/cf/X11.tmpl by those lines:
  #ifndef BuildExpatLibrary
  #define BuildExpatLibrary (UseExpat && !HasExpat)
  #endif

this resolves to several other macro defines.

at least with the prior release version
i had never any problems of that sort,
so something must be different in CVS.

Thanks a lot David,
it was the -d option (without any follow-up parameter)
that was urgently missing from my cvs-update commandline.

i just wrote that straight forward and didnt expetct it to silently
exclude anything in new subfolders from the update process.

I suggest to add this sample commandline to the XF86 web page.
There is no hint on how to use cvs update there at all.

Thats probably a know RedHat problem - they have manged it
to put a few font pakages into their services which do change
the access rights to some of the font paths to root only.

AFAIK RedHat has addressed that in more recent packages,
but unless you know how to do an up2date in textmode you
wont get that far for the gui tool.

to my knowledge, you just have to change this manually.
somewhere in the mailing list repository you might find
the description from Mike A. Harris i think.

not beeing that much familiar with BSD,
but the messages do indicate to me
that your mainboard chipset is not
supported by your AGP(gart) implementation.

Check what sort of PCI-PCI/AGP bridge you do have
and find a matching driver for it,
or find out why AGP does not load on your box.

the fatal error relates to the fixed font.

either of this:
- the font server xfs is not running
- access rights have changed to "root only" by some bogus update package.

i hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply Alexander, the problem was fixed and the X
server has started.
I figured out the problem, it was a silly problem though. The Hard
disk Memory was completely utilised, Removed the unwanted stuff
and the X server resumed.

thats a problem with the XFree86 module loader
in combination with a more recent gnuc compiler.

you might want to use newer sources
or add to your host.def the additional compiler
switch of "--no-merge-constants" in order to
disable the introduction of those dangling symbols.

Hi,

I've just updated the XFree86 ATI driver to xf-4_2_99_3 from CVS and noticed
that the "8x8 mono pattern filled rectangles" operation on radeon cards is
still broken/broken once again.

To reproduce the problem, see the test program included in my email from
Aug, 16th 2002 (included below).

The following patch fixes the problem (I think this change got lost when
merging in the DRI version of the ATI driver):

Subject: ATI Radeon: flipped pixels on 2d accelerated "8x8 mono pattern filled
rectangles" operation
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi,

I'm seeing some strange problems with one of the accelerated 2D
functions in the latest XFree86 (= XFree86 CVS) ATI Radeon driver.

I'm observing the problem here on several ATI Radeon 7500 cards (all the
same model, though),  both on Solaris 8 x86 and Linux x86.  CPU is AMD
XP/MP in all cases,  using Tyan Tiger S2460 and VIA KT266 boards.  The
ATI Radeon 7500 cards came in a box with a "Powered by ATI Radeon" sticker.

The problematic acceleration is named "8x8 mono pattern filled
rectangles" in the XFree86 server logfile and the code used inside the
XFree Radeon driver for this accelerated OP is also present inside the
ATI Rage128 driver - so the same problem could exist in the
XFree86 ATI Rage128 driver as well.

Unfortunatelly I don't have access to a Rage128 card to confirm the
problem for the Rage128...

The attached program below reproduces the problem.  It should paint a
window with a line of 'a' glyphs from an "Arial" truetype font. An 8x8
monochrome bitmap of the glyph is included in the test program. The
glyphs should look like this:

 **
**    **
  **
   *
 ***  **
**    **
**   ***
  **

but with our Radeon 7500's, the bitmap is displayed horizontally
mirrored:

 **
**    **
**
*
**  ***
**    **
***   **
**

I've tried to get some feedback on usenet...

   http://groups.google.de/groups?selm=wy8z3raht7.fsf%40tools.de>

... but the results so far indicate that noone else was able to reproduce this
problem.  So it could be a problem, that certain versions of the radeon
cards cannot flip the bits with the "8x8 mono pattern filled
rectangles" operations, while some others can.

Can anyone with access to the ATI specs comment on this problem?

Can anyone reproduce the problem on their Radeon or Rage128 cards?

[ I've appended a patch that fixes the problem for me, but it seems that
the driver has to probe whether the hardware can bit-flip the pixels for
the "8x8 mono pattern filled rectangles" operation or not,  or something
  like that... ]

sounds like "twm" - a quite slim but useable window manager.
not much of the decoration of some KDE, Gnome or fvwm.
the applications that you do see are listed for startup
in some file on your PC.

seems your default window manager does not start anymore.
thats not really an X11 problem, but an administration question.

with "kde" or something like "startgnome" it would work
on my SuSE installations. for RedHat i am lost, right now.

no - normal operation would be:
* startx
* wait until window manager is ready
* do what you want
* press ctrl-alt-backspace or shut X down by some window manager menu.

your description is a bit puzzled, i dont get what you really seeing.
maybe its an occassional lockup of your system, maybe not.

i would think files with a leading dot are invisible
unless the tools are otherwise tuned.
try something like "ls -a" in your home dir.

thats exactly what you described in your other post what you were seeing,
a clock, two tersm and a twm-ish layout.

that just means that the computer vendor did not take enough care
for adjusting the video bios checksum. it happens occasionally and
is most often uncritical. human reasons are much more common these
days for bios "corruption" than a real hardware damage.

> Well, that's what happens.  Any Ideas, hints, pointers, things to try?

sorry if i cant point you out directly to the desktop swtiching solution.
maybe you just have to change that xinitrc file to something else.
replace the listed twm entry with your prefered desktop manager executable.
you might try stripping the rest afterwards on your own risk.

i think it will work if there wont arise any BIOS/VGA conflicts.

for /etc/X11/XF86Config:
you just have to enter two screen sections, each for a pair of
adapter and monitor. give them different identifiers.
then create a lauout section with something like
  Screen1 "..."
  Screen2 "..." leftof screen1

(typed from scratch, check the man pages...)

Thats all.

Maybe its only gcc 2.xx - but i am guessing.

extract it and then do a "make World" and a "make install".
I just dont know if that will install the kernel modules as well.

maybe that name string is just odd in your config.

how about loading the "agpgart" module manually?
an "modprobe" or an "insmod" for that would do the job,
if your chipset is supported by agpgart.

if you dont have that module at all,
then you have to rebuild your Linux kernel.

As far as i can see on the HP homepage below of the topic
"extreme 3D graphics cards" it is a HP branded card with
a 64 bit PCI slot that comes with drivers for HP-UX only.
I assume that board is in some way tailored to its original
machine design, e.g. PA-RISC little endian, LE-Bios, etc.

Link is not working for me, according to yourvote.com it is an IBM chip.
sub-vendor/sub-device would be quite interesting if set.
right now i dont know who has really built that and on whichever design
he based his layout. It looks somewhat similar to a FireGL 2 board,
but it has some obvious differences as well.

To all my knowledge there are not even Windows drivers for that board,
at least i never heared of someone doing such development works for it.
I must assume HP did design those drivers for HP-UX on their own,
maybe they just used parts of the IBM-AIX drivers for a startup. *blink*

As of now FireGL Linux drivers for the IBM based adapters
are only availabel for Linux/x86. I do not expect that to
change in any way because this is no longer a "hot" product.

Its funny, i have seen experimental machines with x86 CPUs
since about 4 years but i have never got a matching graphics
boards to my hands for plugging it into there. All most recent
were AGP or AGP-PRO based designs.

Its a grafics board that is based on an IBM asic.
Its truely not a Radeon, those others are false.

> The ATI-supplied binary drivers should aparrently support this card,
> but the only machine i have which will take this card at all is an
> Alpha, and thus wont run the x86 binaries supplied by ATI.

My 2nd best guess would be - leave it in the original box and run HP-UX with
it.
As others did already write, IBM has not released any asic specs.

My #1 guess would be - trade it to someone who needs it,
those boards are getting rarer day by day
(=> you can get _much_ money from a suddenly frozen HP-UX user)
and buy some mainstram "8500" "Radeon 9500 Pro" or higher.

At least I assume an "AGP speed 4x/8x @ 32 bit" card
might operate faster than a "PCI speed 1x @ 64 bit".

-Alex.

device.

why so complicated? no RPM on your system?

you can even install it via RPM regardless of your kernel version.
only to the exsitance of the RPM program is a weak requirement.

debian users probalbly make use of the "alien" tool.

the provided kernel modules are "samples" and ease of use
for folks that use standard installation
and never do update their Linux kernel.

for anyone else there is the mentioned subdir,
which only builds parts of the fglrx kernel module,
but in no way it builds the whole driver!

i hope you are running now.

forget about that ID immediately - its the Radeon 8500 AIW

for a quick test the Radeon 8500 (R200) mainline with 0x5148

For users:
Get what is working today and better dont rely on others.
You wont get any specific promises or time shedules.
If something is really available, then think about
if it is really worth its price. If you arent a CAD
or Design engineer, then 3D often does not pay out.
Maybe a passioned gamer will spent the money, are you?

For developers:
Take what you get and look what you can bring to work

Hmm, my first SuSE package had some 450 pages of documentation
for the Shell and for xfree86 setup. meanwhile i have seen they
have added several hundreds of pages more. just read the docu
that your Linux distribution vendor provided to you.
(Linux is a learning curve...)

but here is the quistart for XF86 generic environments:
- log in to the shell as root,
- type 'xf86config"
- answer the questions
- save your results
- type startx

thats it.

BTW, i would be keen on the outputs of "lspci -vvv -xxx"
in order to know which PCI device/function IDs your grafics
adapter does expose to the system. can you do that?

maybe a backup of the file /var/log/XFree86.0.log would be
further of interest in order to see where your failing setup
really fails. posting it to the list would be likely to
benefit anyone out there.

it seems that the AGP capabilities of your chipset did not
initialize for some reason. strange. hmm. at least i meant
those 845 series was a "try compatible" case. maybe support
for it was only added after the latest fglrx driver release.

you can surely bring your system up if removing the fglrx
kernel module, but then you will lack hardware accelleation.
a better solution would be to fix the non working AGP support
for the mainboard chipset.

please see /var/log/messages for more log info on that problem.
the root cause can be anything from an odd bios setup, UMA
design (not in your case) or some MTRR initialisation problem.

then you possibly got that screwed auto update for fonts
that comes with messed up access rights for misc fonts.

please either update your font packages to something more recently

I had the same problem with the 'fixed' fonts after upgrading KDE stuff.
The problem is some RPM makes /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
readable by root only. I fixed the problem with

chmod a+r /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias

Then the X server starts fine.

RE: [XFree86] [XFree86(TM) Bug Report] Unsupported video hardware

2003-03-21 Thread Alexander Stohr
according to www.yourvote.com/pci
you are having a ProSavage DDR (P4M266)
in your computer.

check respective XF86 documentation yourselves
if this is listed as a supported device.
i dont know it from scratch.

you do have a neomagic card
and your display timings seem
to be out of range for the video modes.

sorry - cant help in detail, but getting
your modelines in sync with your

Subject: [XFree86] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Hi,

I've installed Redhat 9 on top of a pretty old laptop which has a VGA LCD.
And I don't know how to get gnome or XFree running.

Each time I ran startx, I got: Screen(s) found, but none have a usable
configuration.

I've attached the log file from XFree to request your help in this matter.

Please advise on how I can get X11 to work on the laptop.

Thanks.

Anthony.

PS: It's a Compaq Presario 1245.

Boy, you are using overrides - telling the driver
that it should see something it knows which is not
present at all in your system. You will better take
one of the latest snapshots from XF86 or the DRI people
and retry than trying things that will surely crash.

> (WW) RADEON(0): Failed to set up write-combining range
> (0x800,0x200)

I think your CPU is our of MTRR resources our your
Linux kernel does have some coding flaw for MTRR.

> (EE) RADEON(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...

The engine got some bogus data, possibly from AGP range.
Alternatively the programmed and/or checked bits do not
at all match what the driver wants them to be.

Use latest drivers. the RS200 was not supported in
the last XF86 release since those chipset is newer
or at least Linux coding for that was not there at
this time.

> /etc/X11/XF86CONFIG:

its XF86Config or rather XF86Config-4.

> EndSection

Forget about all those overrides, those were merely for ISA boards
which did not expose full autoconfiguration and autodetection.
PCI/AGP boards do nicely autodetect if they are supported.
The sole purpose of the ChipID override for PCI boards is
the fact that some newer chipset IDs are mostly compatible
with former designs. You already failed that with the stock
drivers. Use beta drivers.

RE: [XFree86] problem

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
Dear Sir,

you are quite possibly missing the file
  /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/fonts/libbitmap.a
that matches your current version of XFree86.

i suppose you have to get the latest XF86 library
package from the red hat ftp servers or some mirror
and install or upgrade to them.

i cant track that down in detail because i have
not telnet access to a RH 9.0 machine but only to
an 8.0 machine. at least the lib presence or absence
is probably the most important point at the moment.

RE: [XFree86] (no subject) which grafics on FreeBSD

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
dear BSD user,

its a bit mood to talk about what hardware you should use
when you dont talk about what hardware you are using.
often its just supported but for some bogus reason the
hardware does simply not start up. in some cases it is
just trough the fact that software which you can get in
pressed form as a distribution or alikes comilation is not
really up to date and its natural that it wont work on any
hardware that is out there even if support is availabel for
that hardware on the web in form of updates for a long time.

to my best knowledge BSD does offer quite exhaustive
methods of updating even from source packages and
will therefore not limit you. maybe you are just going
the wrong way. a bit more information on your hardware
and software sent to the list(!) will help a lot in really telling
you what is recommended best for your purposes.

RE: [XFree86] Help

2003-08-18 Thread Alexander Stohr
doing some research with http://yourvote.com/pci once again,

XFree86 Version 4.0.3 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 16 March 2001
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is
newer than the above date, look for a newer version before
reporting problems. (See http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

totally outdated and unsupported!!!
you should upgrade to a newer version of XFree86 - really.

(II) PCI: PCI scan (all values are in hex)
(II) PCI: 00:00:0: chip 10de,01a4 card , rev b2 class 06,00,00 hdr
80
(II) PCI: 00:00:1: chip 10de,01ac card 10de,0c11 rev b2 class 05,00,00 hdr
80

you are running an nForce 1 based system.
you must ensure to have latest patches for your kernel applied
if you want to run hardware accellerated OpenGL without crashing
your system.

(II) PCI: 02:00:0: chip 10de,01a0 card 10de,0c11 rev b1 class 03,00,00 hdr
00

you are having the GeForce2 integrated grafics chipset.
i cant see anything else on PCI bus that has a grafics ID.
you might be forced to get either latest DRI development
beta drivers (for X4.3.0) or possibly try something from
your grafics hardware vendor's download area.

(EE) VGA(0): Given depth (16) is not supported by this driver.
(II) UnloadModule: "vga"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

i am not finally sure - possibly only 4bpp and lower is
supported by vga drivers. at least i am sure VGA does not
offer 16 bpp, but maybe only 8bpp for 320x200 resolution.

you might have better success trying the VESA drivers.

2003-08-19 Thread Alexander Stohr
you should check having suffient modelines
and modes listed in your /etc/X11/XF86Config(-4) file.

other than that, /var/log/XFree86.0.log does show
your more details on which specific parameter a
single given modeline is failing. most often the
h-sync and v-sync ranges are inapropiate.

those old drivers do obviousely not support your grafics hardware.
get latest XFree86 and install the "radeon" or some other "ati" or "rage"

to get your (laptop?) hardware up and running.

your way of calling XFree86 is sort of probing,
the list is just the availabel driver modules.

glide is for the 3dfx grafics card support.
you will not at all need it for your hardware.

> (II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
[...]

no worry, its not a Mach64, so detection on 2nd-head device has to fail.

Its not a Rage 182 either, no i am stripping a bit.

Your hardware should be nicely supported by that driver.

> (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa

Those two drivers should work as well.

I just cannot see any signs of propper detection up to here
but thats most probably normal. Probing does take place now:

That sort of setup brought up your grafics to "greyish" visiblity.
All seems to run quite nice - so the system works in principle.

normal messages of driver probing, 2nd device can be ignored.

Perfect!!! It got detected and possibly works now.

That is the final result of your probing.

Let me say, there must be some driver problem.
I think the major problem for setting up a cloned

i would like to pass that on to the experts.
i dont know if using a snapshot version of the drivers

RE: [XFree86] 4.3 setup is dumping

2003-08-26 Thread Alexander Stohr
It looks to me that your grafis hardware is mirrored some 40 times
on the PCI bus scan. and therefore the autodetection tries to load
a bigger bunch of drivers, thus i assume memory exhaustions happens.

Either you do find a way to fix up the PCI bus scan to up to the
very first grafics device (a kernel codechange would fix that best)
or you instruct X11 by some means to stop earlier with the scan.

Your system does have a major hardware bug, or (less possible) an OS bug.
autodetection is not really failing for a coding problem but for
the hardware data that it received leading to ugly side effects.

try the `xf86config` program based configure instead.
you do have that hardware:

lets hope that analysis helps you.

RE: [XFree86] Cannot start anything other than Twm session

2003-12-21 Thread Alexander Stohr
The warning seen by ypu is not related to your error.
The ATI graphics chipset you are using does always expose
an uncritical secondary device in the logs.

I currently dont have the full report present here
but if one windowmanager launches and an other
does not launch then the problem is not at the
driver detection level.

You might retry using an XF86 config that disables
DRI and other accelleration for testing.

Subject:[XFree86] No video with xserver 4.2.1

I'm having no luck getting my s3 driver for version 4.2.1 working on
my system.

Linux distro is Debian testing.

My current kernel is 2.4.23 video card is a "Number Nine Motion FX 771"
- very old, indeed. The chipset is S3.

Output of "lspci":

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corp. 430FX - 82437FX TSC [Triton I] (rev 02)

00:0a.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. 86c968 [Vision 968 VRAM] rev 0

>From the output of XFree86.0.log, it appears to me that my chipset _is_
supported by this later version of XFree86.

I've been using XFree86 V 4.2.1 for some time, but using the 3.3.6
xserver-s3. I've been successful with this server, but wished to
upgrade. After installing this later server, X starts, no crashes, some
warnings, and a few non-fatal errors. However, the screen comes up
black and remains so. A few instances of some faint flashes, and the
monitor goes int "Power Saving" mode. I don't know if the monitor is
resetting and going offline for protection (it comes back on when I go
to a console screen) or if it's the card shutting down.

The monitor is a Sony Multiscan 15sfII for the two resolutions I have
configured: the Standard timings are:
640x480 31.5/35 HSync 60/66 VSync
800x600 35.5/37/48 56/60/72

Despite the above, my 3.3.6 driver is driving a video rate of:
  64.00 HSync, 100.03 VSync

I've added and tried several ModeLines, including the one that gives the
above mode, in my XF86Config-4 file, with no success.

I did at one time try a pixel depth of 16 (don't remember the rates). It
did give a screen, but there were a few glimmering lines at the right,
as if the timing was off, and after going to a console and coming back,
there was a triple image.

I cannot find anything in the log file, or the config file, that looks
like an answer. I'm attaching both.

One question. I don't have framebuffer support (CONFIG_FB) compiled
into my kernel. Is this necessary?

Thanks to anyone who can give me an answer. I'd just like to know why
it isn't working with 4.2.1 and 3.3.6 works.

Re: [XFree86] Problems with fglrx driver and kernel 2.6

2004-01-19 Thread Alexander Stohr
if you are running always the same XF86 version on both
of your kernels then in theory it should always work.

truth is that there is a secondary device on all Radeon adapters
that is not needed for X11 - therefore having uninitialized
adapters in the system should be ignored by X11 startup.

as you do see a difference ( EE instead of WW)
i would suggest you to look after X11 sources.
(the error is expected not to be in the fglrx drivers!).

but to my best knowledge there must be something else
that makes the X11 startup fail - maybe its missing support for AGP.
you may want to provide more information from your X11 log file.

I am currently running 2.6.0-mm2,
[...] My card is a Radeon 9000 Pro, and I am running X4.3
on Debian unstable.

The driver (version 3.7.0, released on 12-29-2003) builds fine against
the 2.6 kernel, but when X starts I receive this error:

(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found

The strange part is that under 2.6.0, this error is fatal and causes
the X server to fail to start. Under 2.4.23, the error message
appears in the XFree68.log, but it is not fatal. I have Googled
around for quite some time now and cannot find this specific problem
mentioned anywhere. There is much discussion about the error message,
but not this situation where it works in 2.4 and not in 2.6.

Any ideas?

The fatal error most likely originates from the unresolved symbol in your
driver.
The MTRR lines were only warnings, and they are not really highly critical.

since you are driving most recent binarys all over the place
i would recommend you to state this in your config
  Load "drm"
in order to possibly get what is missing.

Symbol drmCommandWrite from module /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/via_drv.o
is unresolved!

*** If unresolved symbols were reported above, they might not
*** be the reason for the server aborting.

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting
<<<

as there is no other critical point i can see
i suppose your driver exactly calls the mentioned functions
thus falling into exactly that "trap"
and then getting caugt by a signal 11 event.

How about a line like this in your config:
   Load "drm"

then you do have something like a VT7205.
best guess would be to make the driver belive
that he is having a 7204 in place of PCI:1.0.00

see "man XF86config", it must be BusID and ChipID settings
that will allow you to forcefully overload the real values.
chances are there to some degree that the old and new chips
are still compatible to basically work for you with old drivers.

I think that your XF86 config is missing the module loading
for the frambeuffer device interfacing (fbdev or alikes, possibly a kernel
module)
and possibly the Xv extension loading is missing as well.
Sorry if that is vague - i am writing from "remote"
and dont have an NV board, but you should now be able
to locate more information on the web with those keywords.

None of the video modes in your XF86Config file does match
the capabilities of your hardware (monitor and grafics board).

Try out alternate resolutions, refresh rates and modelines for your setup.

I cant say if your VESA BIOS does impackt somewhat badly here
because i dont know too much about i845G, but maybe in more
recent XFree86 beta versions there is a likeliness that most of your
problems are already fixed. I mean those XF86 4.3.99.xxx Betas
were reported working quite well and incorporate a bigger bunch
of fixes, especially for graphics hardware from the last 12 months.

try loading existing DDC related modules

this should help killing the segmentation fault

Re: [XFree86] IO error 104 on Xserver

2004-02-06 Thread Alexander Stohr
what sort of prompt?
login-prompt or shell prompt?

in the first case, please log in and type "startx",
in the second case simply type "startx".

but of course it can be that your install failed silently
and some major components were missing which do
normally start the x-server automatically.

if anything is okay then for permanently launching
into X11 you can change your inittab settings from 3 to 5.

Re: [XFree86] Starting xserver problem

2004-02-06 Thread Alexander Stohr
the command "startx" does not change from runlevel 3 to 5,
but it does launch an x-server whilst you will still stay in runlevel 3.
changing from 3 to 5 is done via "init 5" - which means the init-daemon
will launch some amount of programs including X11, which are listed for
level 5.

if you dont have network connected font servers in your local network,
then you can disable the Unix font path line from your XF86Config file.

other than that you should have font paths in reach on your local machine.
to my best knowledge there was some access rights bug in an RH-RPM file
that did concern fonts. please make sure you have installed latest updates.

xfs is the font server demon, you might want to try to disable those service
if you find it usefull for diagnostics. i am not totally deep in font
managent but
i assume it is not absolutely a needed component but raises problems
sometimes.

Hi, i have this problems for many years.

OS: RHEL ES v.3
Rpm : XFree86-4.3.0-35.EL

I do not know why, my xserver does not want to start from level 3 to 5 with
the command startx.

Notice that problem is coming from no where and it is random and
sporadicaly.

A) Here the core error message that i get when i tried to start xserver:

" Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!"
"Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'"
"X10: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remainning."

B) Here also the messages that i get when i boot the system :

" Jan 23 08:41:12 station2 xfs: xfs startup succeeded "
" Jan 23 08:41:12 station2 xfs: cannot establish any listening sockets "

If you could provide me with some directions to solve this problem, I would
greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
