Yes, they can only get the raw data. They won't transfer the sample. So, for people wanting to upgrade, they just have to start over. :( And it's REALLY frustrating if someone's relative tested on Ancestry and they are deceased. There's many reasons why I chose Family Tree DNA over Ancestry.
