But they had another commitment and couldn't stick around. Kiah messaged
me that they had found a small heron at Oliphant (Little Blue, or possibly
Reddish Egret, or something else).

The seventh annual Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker) Christmas Bird Count was
held on Saturday, December 16. Snow squalls that started on December 15th

Not gannet, but shortly after 3 pm today, I suspect I had two Fish Crows at
our home near Lake Victoria in Stratford. Unfortunately the birds did not
call, but a number of factors suggested Fish Crow.

Just a note for anyone considering shorebirding at West Perth Wetlands
(a.k.a., Mitchell Sewage Lagoons)...
Water levels are still a bit high in the four traditionally good cells (NW,
NE, SW & fenced) to support good shorebird numbers, although conditions are
improving in the first (NW) cell,

Today between noon and 1 pm I had a juvenile Pacific Loon off the tip of the
point at Rock Point Provincial Park.
The bird was distinctly smaller than the ~12 Common Loons with which it was

A couple of minutes ago I watched a dark morph Gyrfalcon flying northeast over
the marsh at the base of Point Pelee towards Hillman Marsh. Presumably the
same bird reported by Paul Pratt a couple of days ago at Hillman.

At the end of another gorgeous day of late fall birding in Prince Edward
County, I decided to scope the waterfowl in West Lake at the north end of
Sandbanks Provincial Park and was treated to a dark/grey phase Gyrfalcon
attempting an (unsuccessful) horizontal chase of a scaup. The Gyr circled
I had delicious close-up views of a Red Phalarope in basic plumage as it flew
within 10m of shore into the strong southwesterly breeze at Point Petre this
morning (ca. 10:30 a.m.).
In the five hours I spent there, Lake Ontario was alive with water birds --
large numbers of Long-tailed Duck,
As reported by Brandon Holden yesterday, the Cattle Egret is still present in
the little horse pasture west of Wheatley on Mersea Rd. 21 south of Deer Run Rd.
Now, for that other bird...?

Van Wagner's Beach is reached by taking Centennial Parkway north from the QEW
to Van Wagner's Beach Road and heading northwest. Any location along the
beach provides good viewing, but a preferred location these days

Today I contacted crow expert researcher Dr. Kevin McGowan
at Cornell University with a complete description of our putative Fish Crow
observation during Sunday's Wiarton CBC, which I reported on Ontbirds.

Anthony Chegahno I have a Fish Crow in tall Elm on west side of Hwy 6 across
from Shenstone motel south of Meadowland Rd south of Wiarton. Bird has not
called but was in tree with an American Crow and 3 European Starlings, making
size comparison easy. Just called (!!) as I send this at 3 pm.
One Hudsonian Godwit in SW cell - visible from viewing platform. Only 2 other
shorebirds present (GRYE)

One juvenile Red-necked Phalarope (likely one of the two originally reported a
week ago by Eric Jeffrey, and subsequently by Steve Thorpe), was still present
in the large southeast cell of the West Perth Wetlands this morning. The ten
other shorebird species present included a Stilt Sandpiper.
This afternoon's strong northwesterly winds lured me from Stratford to Kettle
Point, where almost immediately upon arrival at ~2:50 PM I was greeted by a
dark-morph juvenile Parasitic Jaeger very close to shore.
No luck with jaegers during the subsequent 90 minutes that I spent at the tip
of

Today at dusk a Short-eared Owl was hunting in a field on the east side of
County Road 73 just south of John Wise Line about 5.5 km south of the main
intersection of Aylmer.
Aylmer can be reached by taking Road 73 (Exit 203) south from Highway 401.
