When I lived in Texas I had a heat pump that went out after about 17 years. I replaced it with a separate AC/furnace and it set me back 10K including installation, but I got a 10 year warranty on it. I believe it was a Lennox. Bruce

It depends on what is wrong. The most expensive part is the compressor I believe. Some people say depending on the age of the unit if your compressor goes it may be better buying a new unit. Other parts are cheaper. it could be an electrical short that you can get rewired etc.

I just replaced mine last year - Make sure you've got it turned off - The problem could be in the capacitor, which would be much cheaper. Some AC's have two capacitors: a run time and a start up capacitor. Basically they just provide a boost. If the start capacitor is bad, the unit wont start

Aren't truly Vista approved/certified/AOK applications *not* supposed to be able to write to the registry? I thought that was supposed to be the huge big thing that Vista introduced (and part of the issue with getting apps certified). Apps are required to install in a non-registry-writing-to-way.
