2) The end of Return Of The King was missing
I think it would have been a better end than the extended tearjerker
at the Gray Havens. Even I was squirming by the end of that, and I'm
one of those people that read all the supporting materials

Both of those were excellent story - Bombadil and the Scouring of the Shire.
However Bombadil was an add on - Tolkein's Tree and Leaf has some interesting
commentaries about that. As for the scouring of the shire, it was really there
to bring closure, and essentially was a minimal reprise of
