Believe the original poster was actually looking for multi-layer switching
(MLS)... the 2901 lacks this capability. You'll need a 2926G (note the
G!), or a Catalyst 5000 with Sup3/NFFC/NFFCII, Sup IIG, Sup IIIG... or a
6000 with Sup+PFC.

The 2901 is a fixed config switch. The modules are screwed in. I would not
be surprised if you could remove a module and substitute another. Has anyone
tried? The modules in mine obviously have had the removal levers eliminated.
They also have a line of small holes drilled across the top

MI was talking about switches that are in the Cat5000 family
though.
the Cat5000 family of switches includes the 2926T, 2901, 2902, 5000, 5002,
5500, etc.
It does not include the 2900XL, 2820, 3900, etc.

successfully upgraded the supervisor from 2.1 to 2.4 as instyructed in the
upgrade instructions (basically copy tftp flash) and rebooted. the cat came
back fine however when I then tried to do and upgrade to 3.2 o

Isn't a 2926T really a Supervisor 1 WS-X3009 and a WS-X5224 24 port 10/100

I am using a 2511 to reverse telnet into my lab. Everything works fine
except the Catalyst 2901.
If I hook a cisco console cable from the 2901 to my pc, it works fine. If
I use my 2511 to console into it, it doesn't work:

I believe that the 2901 is the same as a 5002 except that the 5002 has
modules held in with screws and the 2901 uses a different fastener (torx?).
Modules that work in the 5000 series should work in the 2901. I doubt that a
SupIII would work in a 2901 as the backplane is different

purchased my 5000 it was cheaper to take that route. Generally- the 5002's
