A couple of things come to mind.
You can try mail enabling it and see if that lets you remove the address, and
then mail-disable it.

We use Accellion. Not the cheapest but it pays for itself as we no longer have
to mess about with FTP or posting CDs and DVDs.

the mailbox. If it's set to 'AutoAccept' and 'DeleteNonCalendarItems' is set
to True, I believe you'll see the behavior you describe.
