problem that I now have is that when I login from console (level 3), it
takes my username and password and then just hangs. I am also unable to
login remotely form ssh.

from CD or an ftp site the gtk SRPM (src.rpm) abd run:
rpm --install gtk*src.rpm
And then in /usr/src/RPM/SPECS will be the spec file

I'm thinking it's due to some condition in the environment (maybe a memory
leak) because sometimes it goes away after logging out and and back in.

Not really. Start your X server with -nolisten tcp and it won't listen on
the tcp port anymore.
This you can accomplish by modifying your startx script(bad idea!) or
writing a global xserverrc file and putting right commands to start X there.

Every time I try to select a TTF from within drakfont or gimp xfs dies
and has to be restarted so I delete all my ttf fonts till I find out
what's causing this.

proxy (a simple perl script is also included in the squid docs which
worked on 7.1, failed on 7.2, dont know why!). Basicly replaces a web

It looks like konqueror does not understand either the MIME type or
simply the extension of the file. Have you tried changing the file
associations so that *.asp is treated the same as *.html? Just a

1. Copy the fonts somewhere under /usr/share/fonts/.
2. Run "ttmkfdir -o fonts.scale".
3. Run "mkfontdir".
4. If you created a new directory of fonts, add it the catalogue in
/etc/X11/fs/config.
5. Run "chkconfig --add xfs" to make sure xfs runs at

AMD chips run hot and dont like overheating - check in between the chip
heatsink cooling fins and fan for embedded dirt/lint etc. They are
often blocked nearly solid. Same goes for powersuppy fan and case vent
holes - is the hot air inside the case is getting out? - box not in a
corner with no/l

I did a nmap scan and noticed that X11 is listening on
port 6000 and kdm is listening on port 1024. Are these
daemons required to listen on tcp ports and if not how
do I stop these services from listening. Any help

Trying with the noautotune option made the 2.4-kernel successfully
boot without errors and hdparm -t /dev/hda gave 12.50 MB/sec. After
that timing of hdb resulted in the 'hdb: dma_intr: ...' errors and
gave 4.3 MB/sec. The log file showed:

The Epsons are better supported by GIMP-Print, so you can expect better
quality with them. The advantage of the HPs is that the print heads get
changed with cartridge, so less problems with clogged nozzles. See also

The upgrade solved the konqueror browser font problem - - However, now I have
a much larger problem - - kde 2.1. None of my desktop icons for directories,
cdrom device, or hard drive devices work. When I click on them instead of a
konqueror window opening them up I get the "open with menu dia
I've had the same problem with Mdk7.1. I tried to resolve modifying
etc/lilo.conf, but it didn't work.
Eventually, the problem was resolved uptading to Mdk7.2...
