I do have a gripe with the lyric tool (sometimes more than one!). If I
want to write a letter and a flat, natural or sharp sign as if they were
one "word" they don't have the same base line. Is there a good way to
remedy that? I know one or two work-rounds.

necessary to put one in and adjust it to your
optimum position. Then you should be able to show that layer only and
copy it to as many measures as you want. You may need to do a bit of
adjustment in individual measures to avoid things in other layers but it
shouldn't take long.
