The validation would already have been done.
You only need to check if the re-location has affected any equipment components.
I would take a few cassettes of spare tissue and process it on your most used
program and await the results.

with a GMS stain using periodic acid instead of chromic acid

I would strongly suggest that you not use Periodic acid for the GMS, its
alright for the PAS but for the GMS. Use chromic acid as described the standard
texts.

Try a cell culture solution like Hanks.
It preserves better than normal saline (which despite its name is not isotonic
with cells).
It will keep a renal and skin biopsy quite well for at least an hour.

You mention that the OCT seems a little softer.
Could it be that the sections are thicker than you usually produce. Check the
Frozen section H&E to check this.
If sections are thicker they will tend to detach from the slides.

Another cause of anomalous staining is drying of the biopsy prior to fixative
immersion.

You could try 10 minutes treatment with periodic acid prior to H&E staining
(Luna's technique I think)

have different de-waxing requirements.

preferred fixative
2. Heat 3% agar in a 60oC oven until molten.
3. Centrifuge specimen and decant supernatant.
4. Add 3-4 drops molten agar (dependent on size of sample), gently mix
5. Allow to cool, add fixative, remove block and process.

fixing in formal alcohol should retain more of these "mucins" than aqueous NBF

The saline re-hydration works well as long as smears are not allowed to dry too
long before rehydration.
I have found that air-drying longer than 2 hours decreases the effectiveness of
the procedure.
