Curt, To mount the gearset simply remove the drive gear from the carriage
drive and the index gear from the spindle shaft. The stock gearset will
slide off and replace this set over shafts.
Replace drive gear of choice and 180 tooth index gear and its done.

I did as you suggested and did some measuring and counting
I used the 90 tooth drive gear and a 60 tooth idler and went one revolution
on headstock, the carriage traveled almost 2 inches.
I took slack out

combinations will do for you so you can repeat the results when needed.

its very hard to tell and I may be completely wrong here, but perhaps the
double idler gear is used like back gears on a steel lathe.
on some of the older metal lathes they used a similar set up to obtain very
slow
then the added gears are reducing
the pitch or multiplying them.
