You cannot "add" a third to to a two-way RAID1.
You can create a new three-way RAID1 if you want.
But you can't (AFAIK) change the number of disk is the base array.

Just to set the record straight, no layering of RAID arrays works

That's interesting since I have several systems with 1 over 0

Both of these systems seem to work well with

b) boot up and mkraid
To do the mkraid you need a raidtab file and for that you need an
editor or it must be copied to the floppy when you create it.
Certainly, but Slackware is nice in that it lets you do whatever you want

/dev/md1 = sdb4 sdc4(/var)

Hello,
in between I learned how to setup a raid1 from existing data. Now I have
one more question: If I decide some fine day that I need one disk of my
raid1 for something different that the mirror, how can I destroy the
raid1 and instead use one of the (old raid) disks as usual (non raid)
disk.

I'm trying to set up a Raid 1 configuration on my linux box, and I always
get the same error, whatever the kernel I'm using.
I first tried with a Mandrake 6.1 (kernel 2.2.13-15 updated to some
version > 2.2.13-22), then with a Mandrake 7 (kernel 2.2.14).
My configuration is : PII 450, 128Mo

Hi all,
I'm trying to add mirroring RAID to an existing partition. Is this possible?
It appears to me that when I do mkraid I'm going to kill the existing data.
Is there no way to tell it to use my exisiting data in a new RAID seting and
sync it to the new partition(s)?
Thank,

I have been trying to configure RAID 1 on both my disks and I am a
little confused over this chunk size.
Does it affect the performance of RAID 1?
If I have set 4k chunk at the /etc/raidtab and then mk2fs -b 4096
/dev/md0 , does this mean that the md driver will write one block of data
to each

want
to establish RAID 1 mirroring on these partitions.
First I tried Linux 2.3.47 but I saw that RAID 1 an 4/5 are disabled in this
version. Next I took 2.2.14, compiled md into the kernel, LINEAR, RAID 0, RAID
1
and RAID 4/5 as modules. I used raidtools 0.42 (from Debian 2.1) and 0.90.

I have been using raid 0.9 with a RAID-5 configuration very successfully

I have obtained a matching drive for my system drive and I would like to
set it up in a RAID-1 configuration to mirror my / /usr and /home
partitions. Swap also lives there but I

I've got two different ide-disks in my system:

You aren't going to get on all that well !
Now my question, is it actual to make nearly same sized partitions to use
with RAID-1,

Not necessarily that bad..read on.

how does this touch the performance of my disks ?
