Anyway, with 10.7.5 and the newest safari, there are times when voiceover gets
stuck in it's busy, busy loop and I do need to turn voiceover

Just connect the drive, the mac will have no problems readng an ntfs drive, it
just will not be able to write to it. If you're going to be sharing a drive
between the mac and windows, best thing to do is format it as fat32, this works

I would erase the hard drive, then reinstall snow leppard, once it restarts,
see if you can exit the set up, if not, just power it off and the next time
it's started, it should start the set up assistant for whoever uses it.
