Depends on the unit. If you had a JA30ES, like I do, and had to replace the
optical block, like I did, then you'd pay the AUD$300 to get it done too,
even though the unit was purchased factory second (scratch on the back of
the casing) for AUD$950.

I'm a little bleak about this aspect: if MD vanishes in the US, yes, I can
buy order hardware and discs by mail order, but
I know this sounds dumb because I am equating a work of fiction to reality,
but I recently finished reading the Rising Sun by Michael Chricton. In this
book it is basically stated repeatedely that many technologies were
engineered in the U.S. (like TV and many computer technologies) and the

the Virgin Megastores and HMV stores have MD aisles, all the chains (Tandy,

I find the Sharp 831 plays brilliantly but records badly ... but then again
my only experience of MD recorders is my Sharp 831
But I've played back discs recorded on standalone MD decks and they sound
FAR superior to anything I've recorded (by whatever means) on my 831 . :(

again, an avid fan of the MzR-90/91...if u need recording capabilities,
battery life is fantastic, it is small even though that wasnt a requirement
and inside the nice menu system there is a feature that turns the headphone
jack into a true audio out...just a suggestion hope this helps.

You could use an MD deck plus a CDR recorder; the transfer
runs at 1x but there's no computer involved.
Note ... be careful of SCMS limitations. If the original MD
was recorded digitally, you *may* not be
