Could be a gummed up, partially clogged injector. Try cracking the injector
lines one at a time and see if the noise vanishes on one of them. Or maybe
just try running a can or two of Diesel Purge.
Or could be a piece of carbon rattling around. Might just need a good italian
tune up.

So just went out and about on a quick test drive... and its absolutely
something mechanical clicking away up in the dash or fire wall.
I'll have to dig up a Hayes manual or something and see what could even be up
in that area that could cause such a noise. Just nitices a few oil spots under

to fixZoiks!
So I think I'll go pop the hood, fire her up and manually throttle up. I

Also, cars don't actually ever have to be replaced all at once. A car is
just a collection of parts which wear out at different rates and times- a
car can be maintained indefinitely by replacing parts as they wear out.

My 1985 300TD shakes side to side at idle once fully warm.
The two most likely causes IMO are unbalanced fuel delivery and rack
surge.
My understanding of the rack idle damper spring was that it corrected
a surging lope, not a rough idle. Could be you just have the wrong
idle RPM.
