Thanks Kaleb, Peter and Fred.   If I understand correctly, you put the gearshift in neutral with the car in the air, crawl under with a short piece of rod, probably 4 to 8 mm dia, and adjust the switch to line up a hole with a hole in the transmission shift lever.  Is this right?   I thought I

I ordered a FAG.  It is a 6004-2RS.   When you have the bearing number, you can pick one up locally at a bearing or industrial supply house. (or fleabay) generally faster and cheaper than going through prats channels. You may want to note the bearing number if you have a 124.  May be the same

I was watching the Mercedes source guy videos while I’m waiting on my truck to get serviced and I saw his little handy-dandy kit for replacing the bushings on the shifter linkage. Is it worth the 40 bucks to get the two special tools? What do you think? I’ve never perform this on a W124 before.

I did them on the 126 using a bolt and some washers, which I think is kinda the po-man's tool.  Someone at some point had suggested that approach.  It worked OK but was a bit fiddly as there was not a lot of room up in there to turn the nut/bolt to squeeze in the bushing.  But it didn't cost $4
