From what I can tell those DIY units have special quick connect fittings and
are ready to go. They are also more expensive. The others that have regular
flair fittings require a vacuum to be pulled (no big deal) but are quite a bit
cheaper. Research also seems to indicate all the brands are
My insulation guys, who put two different mini-splits in for me use a brand

That said, when I was researching a mini-split for the FL garage I was going to

Anyone got any recommendations on mini splits? Looking to DIY. Should
not be too difficult I would not think. What the the line sets on
these? Are they universal or brand specific? Most of the kits I see
come with 12-15' line sets. I am going to have to measure to be sure
but I estimate I

Folks,
I’m about to buy and install a 12k btu 220 volt mini split in a house I just
bought nextdoor here on tybee island. I’m going to buy a $650 complete kit on
Amazon
We will see how it goes
Install looks pretty simple

I have been thinking about it too. Would be nice to have AC in the garage in
the summer. Though this July has been unseasonably mild here. Haven't run the
house AC in weeks.

Hi All -

I have put in 3 systems with 8 head units. The install is easy. Just make sure
the connections on your lines are all seated and tight and be careful about
bending the lines. I hired my local AC guy to do the refrigerant (the units are
all pre-charged) - doing nitrogen pressure test, then
I installed a central air conditioning system in my home by myself years
ago. It came with precharged lines and precharged A coil and compressor
unit. When I tightened the fittings on the lines onto the fittings at
the A coil in the furnace plenum and at the compressor unit it broke a
seal in
I've never done one but IIRC some of them come "pre-charged" but I don't know
how they handle evacuating air from the system after installation. Maybe you at
least need a vacuum pump.

I know nothing about installation, but we had an 18000BTU Daikin minisplit
installed in our upstairs bonus room. It is nearly the same dimensions as your
shop, and the unit cools the space with ease. Both the indoor and outdoor units
are very quiet.

Hi All -
I have a question about installing a minisplit. After watching a
YouTube video of the Install, it looks pretty easy. Is that accurate?
We're considering one for our insulated (2") metal shop which is 20x35.
I was considering a 12,000 or 18,000BTU unit unless we could get along

The big commercial Mitsubishi is clever enough to use the heat
from cooling one room to warm another. Can't do that with
separate systems - but maybe the
Ours is wall mounted so we don't have to take it out and put it back but I do
put a quilted cover on it over the winter.I'd also like to have the minisplit
for heat during the shoulder seasons when I don't really want to turn the
furnace on but we'd like to warm up the house.

I put in a 4-head unit with 2-12k and 2-9k heads, this was a few years ago, was
less than $3k for all the stuff. Not hard to install, I’ve done 3 systems now
with 8 head units. I kinda like these things and installing them.
Don’t forget running 30A power to the condenser units. You’ll need
Thanks for the input. Still exploring options -- don't need a huge amount of
cooling, 1600 sq ft, shade on the roof at all hours of the day now.

I've only done 3/4 ton singles. You have more outdoor units, but they're
small and quiet. No problems with minimum BTUs being too high when you
only need to run one indoor unit at low speed. If there's a failure, all
the other units still work. And I don't recall a three ton with four
cassettes
Sounds, like a,good plan Peter. We don't give up our hot water heat but
use mini splits in late fall & early spring

I'm considering mini-splits (probably a big not so mini four way one) as I have
hot water baseboard heat and window AC.
The windowsills are getting trashed from the window units, the house isn't
sealed well, and I have absolutely no intentions of ever giving up my baseboard
hot water heat,
Yes,when life returns to normal would be good investment. We got tired of
schlepping window AC's in & out.. every season.

At some point I plan to put one here to replace our wall mount AC unit. I had
kind of planned to do it this year but with no pay increase and 6 weeks of
furlough all extra spending is on hold.
On furlough next week, doing brakes and some rust repair on the pickup. It had

Yes ours have both AC & heat down to 30F. We just put some in our church's
vicarage that heat down to almost zero.
We love ours.
