, it is supposed to be a firewall router. I would
suggest building a base system to install this on with about 10Gb. You
can use the rest for storage or something, but the install only take
500Mb tops.

What are the contents of your internal machines' sshd_config and are you
sure SSH is up and running. Another thing to check is to make sure
ssh is allowed to go through to the internal network. It is disabled
even from the firewall unless you enable it
