Yes, the S20 also leaves a lot to be desired when scanning b&w. Setting
exposure to zero helps, but still not what I would call a good scan. I've
been trying Vuescan for b&w, and with a lot of trial and error and can
usually get a usable scan, but still nothing to write home about.

I have been scanning my negs and slides at work on a Microtek Scanmaster 4
and have been really really unhappy with the results. I went into a store to
buy a dishwasher on Friday evening and ended up walking out with a
Photosmart S20 film scanner aswell :) it was reduced to $499au (around
$25
My Pentax adapter came with a tool to adjust and remove it.

it was in fine condition. It was, except the diaphragm was frozen. She
gave me a refund.

Where do you get that full frame CCD for a Hassselblad? AFAIK they are
something like 25mm x 25mm which is far from full frame. There are large
format digital backs but they are scanning backs (work like your desktop
scanner). The Kodak chip is 22mm x 34mm 6mp and the camera is something like

I think I paid $170 USD from KEH. After about 8 rolls
of film, I sold it because it was always changing its
mind about where it wanted to focus. So the auto-focus
feature was pretty useless when trying to shoot
candids. Maybe you will luck out and not be bothered
by the focus-hunt boogie.
A too high shutterspeed will not give you underexposure, but will partially
not expose the negative at all, because during the flash the shutter is
obscuring the negative partially. The part of the negative that is exposed
however should still show a correct exposure.

SMC Correction Lens Adapter M +3, which I believe is a 3 diopter

set to spot metering? as the mutlsegment metering is usually quite good on
MZ5n's.

My most used b/w 100iso film of late has been Agfapan 100 and i've been
developing it in Rodinal at 1:50. I quite like the combination.
I've a few rolls of Fuji Acros, but have only tried one a few weeks back
which i think i stuffed up the developing on.
