I used Arch while I still made my living
with a Linux box. Gentoo is great, but for a work machine where I need
to be doing actual work instead of building stuff all the time Arch
was the best (for me) way to get only what I wanted with minimal
dependencies and no kitchen sink.

You could turn that into a script in vim with x as a parameter if you
wanted to automate it.
Or you could do it with a small program that piped the file through a
line at a time and didn't write the first x lines out.

Just did some preliminary testing on this. With a file of 2,347,884
lines, I dd'ed the first 299 lines and closed the file in:
time vim test.txt
299dd
:wq
real0m15.793s
user0m2.612s
sys 0m3.391s

(the language for the class is C#). So I guess what I'm
trying to say is that BYU CS is Open Source, but many students are
sneaking by with Windows, and consequently getting into trouble by not
knowing how to work in Linux.
