Well, I found the cause. Actually, a friend came over and looked at it and
he found the cause.
I had upgraded this system from RH 7.4 to RH 9.0. Apparently when you do
that some old shared libraries were left that conflicted. I would have never
in a million years found that.
Anyway, he found it b
I can't start up KDE. When it first starts, a little, plain, X-window-like
error dialog appears that says "Could not start kdeinit".
Then things spin about a bit and I am back at the login screen. If I change
my session to Gnome I can get in again.
I reinstalled all the KDE packages (30 in all)

Just to let you know, all's well that ends well.
My server software (Web Crossing - great software - and there is a free
version now too!) allows server-side scripting. So I was able to execute a
Linux "reboot" command via the scripting software and safely restart.
I guess I could probably create
In my case this wasn't an upgrade from RH8. It was a clean install on a
brand new computer with newly formatted hard disks.
I'm still deciding what to do. Maybe I can get a serial cable and login via
the modem port somehow from another machine...?

I think (if I can remember correctly) that all I did was turn it off in the
available services control panel, whatever that was called.
Thanks for the tip about the login shells. I'll do that.

Anybody have any suggestions? Any secret Linux "wake up display" keystrokes
or anything like that?

But whether the checkboxes are selected or not, the sounds play.
I tried upgrading to KDE 3.0 today but that didn't help.
Any ideas?

I am trying KDE today and it looks quite nice. But how on earth can I turn
off the "sound notifications" when you open and close windows?
I tried going into the KDE Control Panel, and selected

Well, since my old 6 GB HD died I went over to Shinjuku today and got a new
IBM 40 GB HD - just $64!
Anyway, everything is re-installed.
Since I had more disk space this time I installed also KDE in addition to
Gnome. But what does it mean that there is a KDE menu inside Gnome? I

Well, things had been running fine with my newly installed Redhat 7.2 system

FAILURE, Insert Boot Media and Press Any Key".
The system includes Windows 2000 in the first partition (partitioned by
Partition Magic) and Redhat 7

I removed those, as you suggested, before starting the tests...

I removed those, as you suggested,
How about using an ordinary FTP client and go directly to the ftp server and
download. That should be quicker than going through the browser anyway.
