I've reproduced the problem on a Mandriva 10.2 standard install. After
installing slimserver (version 6.1.1-1), it crashes at startup with the
same error message as you've got. It happens that slimserver cannot load
the DBD::SQLite module. That's normal, it is not installed on my
computer. So

Starting slimserver and immediately checking its status caused the
shell to 'crash'.
Tried rebooting. System crashed whilst shutting down.
Hit 'reset' and rebooted.
Tried starting slimserver, then checking its status, and it comes back

I think that Mandriva supports rpm. If that is so, try the following:
Log in as root.
