meant to update y'all the other day
yeah i tried file import movies (i swear this did not work 2 months ago)
and it worked
didn't bring the files in straight like from iphoto (which is what it
should f...@#$% do)
it converts the file to Apple Intermediate Codec and puts a copy in
the project
p.s. and 3 students had imovie 06 working with the flip video clips in
less than 5 mintues
they were editing before i even explained anything
that was the beauty of the DV conversion in that version, just throw
clips in, it knows what to do.

It's because I laid hands on my Mac first and then did a rain dance :-)
That's pretty freaky that 75% of your class could, but 25% couldn't!
One more thought on the differences between our two Macs - I don't have
iMovie 06 on mine ... I wonder if that makes some crazy difference?

Another for the Kodak Zi6 - got mine on sale at Target. The Mino, Ultra Mino
and others were comparatively priced.
I had done my research before and was leaning toward either the Creative Vado
or Zi6. Couldn't locate the Creative Vado for local evaluation purchase.
Checked out review videos
When I bought my Flip, I also downloaded a dodad called Perian that lives in
your System Preferences:
http://perian.org/
The description on their website reads:
Perian enables QuickTime application support for additional media:
* File formats: AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW
Hmm... my Flip works fine on my Mac with no conversions. Wonder what the
difference is?
I have very sketchy memories of this ... but I think there's some type of
codec that comes on the Flip that you have to install for it to work on a
Mac ... but again, not remembering... just know that on both

Cool - I've never hit apple i before!
Here's what it says:
Format: XviD (3ivx), 640X480, millions
microsoft ADPCM, Mono, 44.100 kHz
FPS: 30
etc... (pretty sure that's the relevant stuff).
Checking the 3ivx thing - on your Flip, double click the icon to open up the
folder, open the System folder,
just to add to this
the flip usually plays nice on the mac if you've installed the codec that
came on the camera
i believe it's the 3ivx codec
however it doesn't play or import into iMovie 09 from what i've tried
(though it converts great in imovie 06, damnit apple)
though i need to update to the
I haven't tested in FCP (I have FCE, but not FCP and haven't tested it in
FCE either), so not sure there. But with iMovie, no extra transcoding steps
- just what I've listed. I don't have to use mpgstreamclip or anything...

Windows Movie Maker. That's what I installed to make it work.

It's working for me! I think with the added codec, it works fine. At least,
I was just able to take a flip video, dump it into iphoto, then open imovie
09 (yes, the new one), in event library click the iPhoto videos, and drag
the video into a new project.
So somewhere between the Flip codec and
david
are you using the HD flip?
i have the little Mino and imovie 09 just does not see any of those clips
(sees Xacti clips aplenty)
and i know i've installed the codec.
do you have a small clip you can send me? i'd love to see if my imovie will
see your clips.

It's not an HDFlip - it's the Flip Ultra that shoots SD video. Still willing
to send a clip if the model of my Flip doesn't change anything... gotta love
codecs!

is to use the Streamclip
Mpeg app that will change clips into DV files. This makes titling work much
better.

John,
I've a feeling that iMovie imported it for editing in MPEG4 format
i really don't know what the deal is
i can't get any flip clips to be recognized my imovie 09 v.0.8.3
they're in my iphoto
and imovie refuses to see them.
it brings Xacti Mp4s in fine.
i even tried one of David Lee King's clips.
i'm updating my flip software from here, so i'll see if that helps

We shoot our internet series Momversation (www.momversation.com) with the Kodak
Zi6. We literally mailed the cameras to all our panelists along with a short
video we created about the product and how to use it.
For the most part it's worked great, however, we have been having problems
lately.

LOL. Bill - you know that's exactly what I've been tossing and turning about! I
know I need/want the 30fps mobile video of the iPhone 3GS but I love the idea
of HD from watching all that pretty footage on Vimeo. I'd like to do both but
the misses would have my head! :-)

As for sound it seems ok, but he mainly puts it in situations where the volume
is a bit too much:

Hey Jarod,
Great example - I think the video looks and sounds pretty good for a
live performance. But screw video, let's talk about your bass and your
band! I plugged in my headphones, clicked on the HD button on YouTube
and really enjoyed you guys! Great tune. Must go practice guitar now.
I figured that clip would show how it does in a poorly lit situation. That
place (obviously) has just a bit of red lighting which my normally awesome
Cannon just hates.
Only thing I dislike about the flips is it's form factor - but that's just my
preference. I find the Xacti's more
I just recently bought the Xacti CG10. It's a nice little camera. I shot my

I'm intrigued by the price/performance of Xacti CG10. Several wins for

Jay, thanks for the video example of the Xacti CG10.
Video footage looks very nice. I handled one in Radio Slack today and
it felt great. Very impressed that this is a sub $200USD camcorder. I
figure it would be pretty functional mobile rig when paired up with an
EyeFi SDHC Wireless Card
David,
Saw your digital photographs. Your Xacti CG10 seems to add a lot of
image sharpening, so it feels like edgy HDR. Did you post-process
them? No matter the camera, you've got great sense of composition. :)

I added a little contrast to the images as the sun was really blowing out
everything. Not much more than that though.

I'm no where near a good photographer however I'm pretty impressed with the
images the CG10 takes.
I took these today with it here in town - http://bit.ly/18tp57
I had the camera set on widescreen. There's also a setting for 4:3 ratio at a
higher resolution than what these are. Still...pretty
One other thing. For the manual control freak, there are a tons of manual
settings on this camera. You can use it in full automatic mode or make
everything manual. I havent seen a small camera like this that has manual focus
before. I was very happy to find that out :)
