Hi Ed - Actually I was taught that yes, the drum drip is to catch
condensate, but was also to allow for breakage of a part that was not part
of the system so that the system could be returned to service if indeed
there was a break from freezing water. Keeping the top valve closed removes
the latter reason from the equation and you might as well just have a valve
with a plug in it. If the 2x1 or the lower valve breaks, closing the top
valve stops the water flow while working on draining the system and
returning it to normal dry service and installing the new parts on the drum
drip - if the top valve or next fitting breaks, no such safety mechanism
exists. This is of much greater consequence when dealing with a drum drip
installed with a shoulder nipple into a system tee rather than at the bottom
of a long drop pipe.

of the low point drain, of course, is to be able to drain water. Some is
condensate, and some may be residual after a dump. Once all drains have
been cleared, any water that accumulates will be condensate.

is not specifically to contain water. Whether water settles in the drum, or
above the drum is of no consequence.
