So what you're saying is that per the I-Codes, hydrants are the preferred
method of protection and sprinklers secondary?

When have you ever needed the approval of the AHJ to install sprinklers instead
of just providing enough water to hydrants?

The trouble is, there is no wording in the IFC stating that the Fire Flow per
appendix B is the minimum acceptable provision thus allowing sprinklers to
consume less water while you are providing a larger source that assumes no
sprinklers.

Subject: RE: Fire Flow

Ok so let's just remember that if you have insufficient "Fire Flow" per the I
codes, one of the alternatives is to fire sprinkler the property. So in the
I-codes Sprinkler = Reduced fire flow requirements or an alternative to full
fire flow provisions.

Let's say I do a flow test that shows I have 1500 GPM available @ 20 Psi, but
the required fire flow for this building and type is 2750 Gpm. What can I do?
Provide fire sprinklers of course with AHJ approval. Does that come out of the
available fire flow? Of course it does, because I've still only got 1500 Gpm
available. It's not added to the minimum fire flow, it's part of the fire flow.

Far. And yes the fire flow accommodates the demand for both. I'm trying to
figure how much storage is needed.
