Thanks Ron and Scott. The provision for sprinklers below a mezzanine/deck
looks pretty obvious as far back as the '55 edition.

The requirement for sprinklers blow other obstructions which were not defined
specifically may be more difficult upon which to render an opinion.

Was there any other general wording related to "obstructions to discharge over
4ft in width"?

Craig,

"NFPA 13, 1955, 715. (a) Decks. Sprinklers should be installed under decks and
galleries unless they do not exceed 4 feet in width, with at least 6 inches
clearance from the wall or partition and with arrangements to keep all stock a
similar distance from the wall or partition. See section 201."
Inside front cover in definitions: "The word "should" indicates advisory
provisions."

I don't see anything else about obstructions, but there are actually several
pages in the location and spacing chapter.

Let me know if you need more.

Subject: How far back in NFPA 13 - Obstructions

Got an issue with a client. Industrial chemical processing building, built
circa 1940's give or take. Building has sprinklers. Sometime possibly in the
60's -70's an access platform was built (20ft by 40ft+/-) and no sprinklers
were provided below. Also some vessels were not provided with sprinklers below.

Here's the question to whoever has the oldest edition of NFPA 13, what edition
do you have and does it address sprinklers below obstructions? What is the
specific wording?

If you can PDF that page with the edition and e-mail it to me that would be
most excellent!

Thanks,
