I have had that arrangement accepted (although no need for a hot box, the PIV was installed in the run-in to the building as they normally are). Now one thing to qualify this, this configuration was only used when the run-in served a single system. When there was a manifold serving multiple systems the PIV was still installed but individual water control valves were installed below the control valves for each system. This way all systems wouldn't be disabled if one needed servicing. The outside PIV's were also supervised by the fire alarm system.

It was my understanding that you needed a control valve on the actual riser (this by looking at the diagram at 8.15.1.1). Is there something that says that you can use the PIV as the control. Keep in mind this is using the 2002 13 code.
