The sections that Ken referenced are pretty explicit on how, when and where
column protection is required. The intent sounds like a way to protect the steel in situations where the ceiling system densities may be light enough that they may not provide adequate cooling. Horizontal sidewalls pointed up are a bad idea (and are not permitted by NFPA 13 anyway) since you can't predict how far up
they will throw due to water pressure variations vs gravity.
The standard says "sidewall sprinklers" and does not differentiate between
horizontal and vertical. Therefore I would assume either would be acceptable.

Ken,

based on what I read in the sections I noted earlier I understand
the intent of NFPA 13 is to have the spray from the sidewall sprinkler,
horizontal or vertical, directed to one side of the column. If the
spray is directed up, how does that conform to what NFPA requires? Are
you suggesting the wording in NFPA 13 is incorrect, or that it's just
being incorrectly applied if the spray is directed horizontally, rather
than vertically?
