I'm jumping in late ;-).

If I were a member of a union, I would definitely go to the union
first. If you have a weapon, use it - that's what I learned in the
corporate world. Especially if you are dealing with sh!t-heads who
have influence over your career. Having said that, I'm not one to join
a union.

I have also used HR to great effectiveness for a variety of reasons.
The thing to remember about dealing with HR is that you have to
position whatever you want from them as good for the company. Whatever
you do, stay professional at all times.

Lastly, in a really bad situation, you can always call a lawyer. It
helps a lot if you have one in the family or your circle of friends.
