There are two different issues worth discussing here: the viability of the appeal of these Democrats to soldiers as part of building a movement among soldiers to stop US military aggression and the quite different issue of what this appeal indicates about the current situation within the ranks of the military in the USA.
I think Mark is completely correct about the first issue. As for the second issue, I think Steven is on the right track. The military of the USA has been trained in its "constitutional role" and the constitutionalist ideology of the United States. Trump's anticonstitucional politics has gone beyond what they have normally tolerated. Extrajudicial assassinations of leaders like Osama Bin Laden have been accepted without a blink of an eye, wars without a declaration of war have become common practice, but extrajudicial murders of innocent civilians on the high seas, publicized almost instantly by Fox News, have roiled the waters of constitutionalism. Almost certainly this has something to do with the strategic and tactical training of the US military especially after Vietnam and Afghanistan: don't step in shit when you don't need to. However, the Democrats appeal most likely has something to do with more immediate and urgent domestic US considerations: the 2026 elections. The Republicans are very, very likely to lose, and lose big in next year's elections. Donald Trump is very aware of his own vulnerabilities to impeachment. Even if he is not impeached, if he survives to 2028 and is no longer in office, he is very likely to be tried and convicted of a long list of criminal offenses unless he can maintain control of the White House one way or another. Ipso facto, Trump has reason to try to steal the 2026 elections and his actions who that he intends to do just that. He would like to use the US military to intervene into those elections to steal the ballot boxes either literally or figuratively. How can the Democrats counter his coup? One way is to appeal to the miliray to counter it by disobeying his orders. In other words, the logic of the situation says the Democrats are not just making a pacifist and moralistic appeal to soldiers to disobey illegal orders, but that rather they are preparing their own counter coup to Trump's potential coup attempt next year.
