, Michael Meeropol noted Gar Alperovitz. Back in the mid to late 70's as I was
radicalizing, immersing myself in contemporary and historical socialist and
communist texts, I read a co-written book by Alperovitz and Staughton Lynd,
published by Beacon Press in 1973.

Strategy and program: two essays toward a new American socialism (

Via ^ the Internet Archive site. Register for a free acct. there to check out
the book and read in full. An earlier version of the piece by Staughton Lynd (
https://archive.org/details/failureofdreames0000lasl/page/712/mode/2up?q=Lynd+
) from the above volume, was reprinted in the classic anthology edited by John
Laslett and Seymour Martin Lipset, " Failure of a dream? Essays in the history
of American socialism (
https://archive.org/details/failureofdreames0000lasl/page/712/mode/2up ) ,"
originally published by Doubleday Anchor Books. Later reissued by the U.C.
Press, but,  a bit shorter.

Two other relatively volumes, among many others, could be cited The first one
below was co-edited by the late Frances Goldin. As a literary agent, I see she
represented ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Goldin ) Michael Meeropol's
brother, Robert.
Imagine : living in a socialist USA (
https://annas-archive.org/md5/d866ad7ac527a45986cf5b43f6e5dcd1 ) edited by
Frances Goldin, Debby Smith, and Michael Steven Smith (
https://annas-archive.org/search?q=edited%20by%20Frances%20Goldin,%20Debby%20Smith,%20and%20Michael%20Steven%20Smith
) New York: Harper Perennial, First edition., New York State, 2014 (
https://annas-archive.org/search?q=New%20York:%20Harper%20Perennial )
When that volume was in a Barnes and Noble, seeing it had a piece by the Son of
V.J. Jerome of the CPUSA, Fred, I did involuntarily react negatively,
initially. Renegade Ron Radosh had a very negative review in David Horowitz'es
Frontpage Mag which was scathing (
https://www.frontpagemag.com/imagine-living-socialist-usa-ronald-radosh/ ).
Radosh fulminated (
https://pjmedia.com/ron-radosh/2014/01/24/can-you-imagine-the-media-in-a-communist-usa-n149189
) in another right-wing website PJ Media (
https://www.salon.com/2014/01/18/lets_nationalize_fox_news_imagining_a_very_different_media/
) , about Fred's article in the anthology, after Salon published his
contribution (
https://www.salon.com/2014/01/18/lets_nationalize_fox_news_imagining_a_very_different_media/
 ).

The other recent volume that comes to mind is, We Own the Future : Democratic
Socialism—American Style (
https://annas-archive.org/md5/9dc981663871c5f2510b66602b1bcc1c )." An aside
about one of the editors, Peter Dreier who teaches at Occidental College. When
the DSA-LA had its growth spurt, in the Bernie boom, going from monthly
attendance at meetings of around two to three dozen folx, a decade ago, to
300-400 when the meetings were held in an auditorium at the United Teachers
L.A. HQ on Wilshire Blvd., at an event in another auditorium in a public park,
Dreier spoke, for too long, and extolled Victor Berger, at length, The comrades
I was seated with, mostly former members of the ISO, began heckling and
hooting. Speaking with him, during a lunch break, he was rather defensive about
Berger's racism. Plugging Victor Berger into the search bar at X, there are
some threads on Eric Blanc's piece. A fellow former member of the SPUSA, a
Maoist in St. Louis, Black Red Guard, who joined the DSA a couple yrs. ago and
is a leader of a M-L-M Caucus, Liberation, makes the same point (

Actually, Berger & the sewer socialists fought hard vs racism, the KKK, &
lynching once significant numbers of Black workers arrived in Milwaukee after
WWI—& Black workers reciprocated by supported the Socialists Antiracism was
plank #1 in Berger's 1922 congressional campaign!
